Message from Moby Dick

For over twenty-five years, Moby Dick has been a fixture in San Francisco's Castro District. A friendly, down-to-earth neighborhood bar with a reputation for a fun and diverse crowd, personable staff, enticing drink specials, and . . . well an awesome 300 gallon saltwater aquarium overlooking the bar- a must see. Known for a place to meet old and new friends and staring at fish, you can enjoy a few games of pool, some pinball, or trying your luck against Mega Touch Maxx's touchscreen trivia.

The Scene
Assorted regulars, middle-aged (gay) average Joes and the usual pick-me-up-and-take-me-home mob share space in this dark, cramped bi-level room which houses a pool table, pinball machines, TVs blasting videos (think Britney Spears and Madonna) and a gigantic aquarium above the bar. Although crowded, folks here are decidedly more casual than some Castro Street offerings; they're more interested in kicking back and enjoying the incredible drink deals. Local art, at times gay-centric, adorns the walls.

The Draw

This laid-back drinking den has been around for more than 25 years and has its formula down pat. Crowds come back for casual drinks at reasonable prices.

Key Points

  • Daily Happy Hour and Specials
  • Pool Tables and Pin Ball
  • 2 Flat Panel TV's with Videos

The Inside Scoop

  1. When to Go - On Saturday and Sunday nights, a DJ spins everything from Christina Aguilera to the Who.
  2. Save Money - The drink specials are mind-boggling: Get 2-for-1 margaritas every day ($5), except Sunday, when Sex on the Beach is substituted. Happy hour (Mon-Fri, 3pm-8pm) features $2.50 well drinks, domestic bottles and select drafts. Sunday's beer bust (3pm-8pm) offers $1.75 domestic bottles and select drafts.
  3. Know Before You Go - The bar is cash-only, but there's an ATM next door at the laundromat.

Unique

So it's not the bar that I most frequent in the Castro, but if I have time, I deffently make a stop to it. The crowed isn't to bad, but they do tend to be older and tad bit bigger, but there's plenty of times I found a gem in the crowed of people.

A great bar just gets better

by pathani

Bennigan must have been experiencing P.M.S. the night he reviewed this place this is a great bar, the bartenders were very friendly, I didn't find it clickish at all, everyone was very friendly. They just got a new sound system and it sounded great to me. I met a lot of really nice people and saw some very hot guys also. The drink speceials were really unbelievable, 2 margs for $5.00 everyday and night you can't really beat that. The place was very clean I really couldn't find anything wrong with it. I had the best time and made some new friends on top of it. I highly reccommend it.

Pros: Good friendly service, good sound system, hot looking people

Cons: cash only

Bennigan's, in the Castro?

by castrohorsey

Walking up to and entering this neighborhood bar, you feel like you are doing "the time warp". I thought this style went out in the 80's. As for the clientele, very clicky and the bartenders seem to ptomote it. All of this attitude changed in one year! This used to be a fun and friendly place to hang out with friends. Now, this is just another "stand and model" bar. Prices are in line with the other bars but they pour them a little on the short side, not to mention that you have to wait an eternity for snobby service (you thank the bartender for serving you, not them thanking you). Also, what happened to the videos?! If you can understand them, it might be cool, but they used to be sooo much better. Much better alternatives nearby.

Pros: Location, open widows on the street.

Cons: Service possibly the worst in The Castro.

Great Bar

by jackmann

I had a great time, Doug, David, Ramiro, the 2 Tony's, John, Michael, Tor, and Joe always make me feel welcome and like I belong. The place couldn't be better, the owners have really cleaned it up and are doing a lot of work on the inside. If you haven't been there in awhile it's worth a trip tp check it out. You won't be dissapointed.

A really nice place to be

by joenscot

This place just keeps getting better and better. They've redone the floors painted rehinished the bar, hired some really cute and friendly bartenders, opened up the space, and it really shows there is a hot crowed in there just about everynight, really nice people to. Not a type bar everyone seems to be welcome. It's really what a Gay bar should. I had a great time. I'll be back!

Pros: crowded, handsome men, Friendly

The New old Moby Dick Bar

by joecapp

This bar has had new owners since April and really deserves a new review. The new owners have begun to restore the bar which in turn has made the bar a cleaner nicer place to be and it also gets very busy Thursday Friday and Saturday nights and Sundays it's a very happening place to be. Check it out!

Pros: Friendly, Everyone welcome, Great Staff

Best place to chill out, sketch out, act out, hide out in the Castro! The bar staff are super-friendly, and how can you discount a place where rugby players hang out with drag(ged) queens!

Pros: Anonymous

Cons: Vibeless
