I would like to give no stars at all to this restaurant. The food was just ok and shellfish was dry and to salty. I had purchased a gift receipt and was told I could not use it, even though I purchased dinner for four people and several

I recently attended a birthday party at Thalassa in the Wine Room. It was one of the best dining experiences of my life. The food was outstanding, the service was impeccable and the atomsphere was absolutely charming. I know where I will

Aside from the attentive staff, cool digs & great location, the seafood is killer. But one can't eat fresh seafood & great Lamb without a good bottle of wine to go along. And their wide variety of greek wines makes for an excellent pairing whether it's red for the Lamb or White for the Fish. You really can't go wrong here.

I recently planned a 50th birthday dinner for my mother and her girlfriends at Thalassa and everyone had a fabulous time!

My mother is from Athens and is very picky about greek cuisine and she agreed the food was exceptional. I especially recommend the baccala and kataifi (shredded wheat)-wrapped scallop appetizers. Overall, the seafood tasted very fresh and everything was beautifully plated. We liked the sommelier's wine recommendations (greek syrah, chardonnay, and sparkling wine). The service was very attentive- any time I looked up at the maitre d', he came over within seconds. Last but not least, the decor and ambiance is cool, clean, and airy. They pay attention to detail, as even the bathrooms were stocked with yummy-scented olive oil/fig soap and tocca lotion. My only suggestion to the restaurant would be to turn up the music a little, as it was very quiet where we were seated.

The special events manager worked with me to arrange a prix fixe menu for my event and all the ladies had a great time...I recommend this place for a party, rehearsal dinner, etc. as well as a quiet dinner. Can't wait to return with my husband!

From the moment we walked into this Great "Hidden" in the middle of the block in tribeca restaurant we love this place. The waiter encouraged us to Select our dinner & apps from the Fish display - full of Fresher than Fresh Seafood - Shrimp the size of a lobster, Langustinos, Oysters - Lobsters - Amazing Fish from Greece etc.. we had a Lethrini which was very tasty and cooked perfectly, The wine we drank was an awesome Burgundy & fairly priced as we noticed. The service was very attenative & Not over attentavive which could be annoying at other places - At Thalassa we did not get interupted we simply enjoyed our meal & will be back soon.
The decor is very cool & tribeca like with great curtains flowing thru out the space & the bathrooms are spectacular & so clean & have Tocca candles that smell so incredible.
They deffinately pay attention to all the details.

I had heard such great such great things about Thalassa, that I was so looking forward to my visit. We went a couple weeks ago before attending a show and we had the best time. We were seated right away and our waiter was very attentive and considerate to the fact that we had to get out of there on time. I ordered the scallop which was amazing, ordered a whole fish Lavraki (sea bass i think?!) melted in my mouth, had some delicious greek wine that they reccomended. The dining room is absolutely beautiful and it was one of the first warm nights we were getting in New York! Overall the service was great, the hostesses and waiters were all very friendly and welcoming. I will definitely come back a few times this summer and would love to try more of the menu...

I was disappointed with my experience at Thalassa only because I had heard such good things. The restaurant itself is very nice, good ambiance and the food was delicious. The problem is the waitstaff - they weren't that busy when we arrived and I felt ignored the whole night. They definately have staffing issues - too bad, since their food is really good.

Went to Thalassa last night for my birthday; I have to say it was the worst service I have ever experienced. Upon arrival, the bar was deserted with no bartender in sight. It was a good 5+ minutes before one appeared. We ordered a manhattan straight up and a cosmopolitan while waiting for our third person; the bartender could not find the vermouth for the manhattan and was not sure what was in the cosmopolitan.

Once we were seated at our table, it was another 10+ minutes before a waiter came over with the menus. We then ordered another round of drinks. After a good 20 minutes, he came back with a cosmopolitan (but not the manhattan), and instead of using vodka, it was made with whiskey. The waiter never came back, but the bartender came over after 10+ minutes to see if the drink was ok; we then told him the problem with it and returned it (maybe he saw we were not drinking it, or realized he made it incorrectly). When they came back with this new round of drinks, instead of a manhattan straight up, we were given whiskey on the rocks. And instead of a cosmpolitan, it was cointreau and cranberry straight up (no vodka or lime juice).

I do have to say the food was very tasty (but not incredible). The restaurant was not busy at all, but we left there feeling very ignored - from not bothering to make the drinks right, to not coming over to the table much at all to check on us (we were getting ready to leave when they brought the menus over); we were never asked how the food was. You can get better service at McDonalds.

My wife and I went to Thalassa recently and had a wonderful time. Delicious seafood dishes were prepared perfectly. They had a very nice wine list and the service was excellent. I also must mention that the ambiance was very nice making for a great night out with my wife. Highly Recommended!

I celebrated my husband?s birthday with a party in Thalassa?s private wine room. The quality of their seafood and their service was outstanding. Most important, our guests had a great time. I had read great reviews of this place but this evening was above and beyond my expectations. Thank you for making my husband?s 40th a memorable experience.

This being my first review on Citysearch, I felt I had to let others know of the truth behind the fascade of beautiful decor at Thalassa. First off: the service was AWFUL, I have never been to a restaurant of that caliber and receive such bad service. Our maitre'd just had no ettiquette at all, kept trying to convince my party of 4 that we shouldn't have what were ordering, kept pushing the "market price/p/lb." menu; finishes off by saying I'm going to ask for the smallest piece from the chef because it's too large. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, I even corrected him by saying we were hungry, etc. He said he understood. Our appetizers took an unusally long time, mind you, the place was not overtly busy. My salad was tasteless, I was practically choking on it due to the lack of "honey dressing" they claimed was on it, however there was none. Our turbot was brought out and it didn't look like what was on the menu. When I inquired, he, the annoying waiter, gave us the turbot by the POUND, when we had ordered the one on the entree menu. I couldn't believe how he didn't understand that we wanted the entree, considering I pointed to it on the menu. Mind you, the turbot was terrible, practically falling apart on the plate. We decide that they will give us the sides in a separate dish. When this arrived it looked a lump of leftovers from the kitchen. Just bottoms of artichokes, and slices of carrot and heaven knows what else in a tasteless broth, ughhhh, it was just disgusting. My friend had requested the rissoto with just "two shrimps & 2 scallops on top". What came out on the plate was a whole other story, these 2 IMMENSE shrimps, literally the size of someone's head and some foreign matter whilst she was cutting them open. The bill arrives and of course everything is by the pound, which I thought inconsiderate since he made the mistake. Normally I complain, but we all couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. Worst dining experience EVER in NYC.

I have been several times, as I live in the neighborhood, and every time I have really enjoyed my food. The atmosphere can border on dull sometimes, it doesn't feel very busy even when every table has a customer, but the service and the food more than make up for it. I actually enjoy the appetizers much more than the entres, and I found the feta stuffed calamari to be the most memorable part of the meal. Also, I want to note that I am always very impressed with the service. I could see the waiter, bussers and maitre d all keeping eyes out for all of the guests. If you are looking for a Greek restaurant with gyros and taziki sauce, then this would not be the restaurant for you. But if you want great, fairly simple, food then I would definitely recommend Thalassa to you.

This Valentine's Day I was to propose to my girlfriend, so I needed to make sure that everything was perfect. From the moment we walked into Thalassa, I knew that I had made the right decision. The ambiance was nothing short of enchanting, from the flowers on the table to the stunning decor of the space. The food was sublime, every course was beautifully presented and tasted exquisite. They also had a pianist and cellist for that night that really added a special touch to our magical evening.
I proposed, she accepted. We would never forget this evening.

We called at 8:45 on Friday and got a table for two at 9:00pm. The service was great, complimentary appitizers were given before we had even seen the menue. Overall it was a three hour (!) dinner that seemed to fly by, delicous food. The dover sole was very tastey.

The decor is lovely and the service was excellent, however the food is inconsistent and it's overpriced. The octopus was amazing, but the tuna app was tasteless. The halibut was served on top of four huge artichoke bottoms and was coated with shake and bake. Everything needed salt. The bread was good, but how hard is it to buy good bread and put it on a plate. Even the steamed greens were tasteless. The cheese was boring and the wines by the glass were ridiculus at $14 per glass. The web site mentions a selection of smoked fish, but there was nothing on the menu. We asked about it and the server seemed confused. I was considering this place for a private party, however customers have to walk directly through the space to get to the bathroom.

Thalassa is one of my favorite restaurants in Manhattan, and I entertain guests and/or clients there at least 6-8 times a year. It is a beautiful restaurant and I've never had a bad experience with the food or service. BUT, my most recent experience there irked me a little: I was entertaining 8 of my most important clients and felt like the server was trying to manipulate our orders for some unknown reason. We tried to order several appetizers, but our server tried to strong-arm us into ordering a seafood assortment for the table. I let him know we'd be ordering individually, not communally and he again tried to sway me. Several of us ordered the Grilled Stuffed Octopus, but were brought the sliced octopus. We pointed out the mistake and were told that he took the liberty of ordering several other dishes for us. Unacceptable. Finally brought correct octopus dish, but was one short resulting in sharing mine with client. After that, fairly smooth--but bad taste in my mouth with regards to service. I don't want to stop going to Thalassa, but will not return if a server tries to dictate my experience again.

Thalassa is such a great hidden treasure. The outside is so simple but when you enter you think you just arrived on a Greek Island. The Matr'd and the Fresh fish greets you as you walk in, had a Greek fish , cooked perfectly, nice simple sides not to creative but good, the apps where very creative and delicious , try the fish soup as well, dessert warm custard pie, i forgot the name. Wine selection is totally amazing they have everything !! We decided since at a Greek restaurant lets drink a greek wine, impressive Greek wines, waiter recommended a Greek varietal but I decided to drink a Greek Cab first and selected the wine by looking for the most Greek original sounding name, by total chance it drank very well, the second bottle drank a xino greek varietal was also good the dessert wine is ok a little to sweet for me. We are axious to go back, although Tribeca is far for us but its worth the trip. Also had a selection of greek cheeses with desserts they where good the one i like and buy it all the time at Graces Market, dodonis.
Service was attentive not overbearing, they pay attention to details and I like that when I go out because I like to unwind and have others take care of everything. The restaurant is a bit pricey, but all good restaurants are today, I don't mind paying for something worth it.

Dined with a friend the other day, and enjoyed the experience. The ambiance is definitely worth paying for. The restaurant was beautiful, clean classic lines, attention to details. We got bread and olives and a wonderful eggplant paste to go with the bread when we sat down. We ordered the Patzaria as an appetizer, which came with a ton of hummus and pita bread. We ordered the Pita Solomos and the Lobster Ravioli. The Pita was good, but I could not tell the lobster was lobster, it could have been any other ingredient, as it was pounded so much it was unrecognizable. For dessert, we had the Galaktobouriko, which was delicious. It came with cocnut ice cream, which totally made my day. Definitely enjoyed the meal. Would go back, but it is pricey.

Went there for the first time yesterday w/4 friends for Restaurant Week. The space was gorgeous and the menu was imaginative. The Lavraki fish was great and I enjoyed the honey walnut cake. The service, however, brought the experience down completely. The server, who was dressed like a manager but had zero serving skills and/or ettiqutte, was vapid, snotty and totally absent for most of the meal (although he couldn't stop hovering after he presented the check). I was under the weather and didn't order a lot and the server could not have been more clear about how much he disapproved of my choice. Despite my four friends all ordering full meals a round of cocktails and 2 bottles of wine, he managed to make 5 rude remarks about my smaller order! I am in restaurant management myself, and i understand how busy Restaurant Week can be but the place simply wasn't that full and the server gave the impression that even had the place been completely empty who wouldn't have changed his attitude. As one of my friends put it at the end of the meal, "He wasn't the worst server I've ever had, but if this wasn't Restaurant Week and I had just paid $150 for my meal, I would have been pretty angry."

In an out of the way part of Tribeca, I was pleasantly surprised by the restaurant. The fish were very fresh and you can actually choose which fish you want to eat from the raw bar. The crowd was a little bit older than you normally see downtown, but there was a mix of clientele. The bill did add up quickly though! Over $100 a person with some wine, so beware of the fish by the pound concept!

Pros: Nice service, sleek atmosphere, fresh fish

Cons: Pricey tabs

I was waiting for my 3 friends to arrive, and was treated with cold indifference from the staff. As I looked around the room, I can only say I felt the waiters took themselves too seriously. The atmosphere was very uptight, not indusive for a pleasurable meal, no matter what the quality of the food may be.

Both the service and food were fantastic from beginning to end during my recent dinner at Thalassa. The maitre'd was courteous, the sommelier made an excellent wine recommendation, and our waiter Erman(?) was very knowledgeable about the selection of fresh fish which arrived hot and delicious at our table, yet I still have one complaint: whomever is in charge of the music program is an acoustic imbecile. There are no less than four speakers in the dining room, but they don't make a peep. As a result, all of the music comes from the bar area, bounces off walls and dividers, and becomes muted and distorted. Despite the excellent quality of the cuisine and service, they were hard to enjoy because it was like eating with a mosquito buzzing in my ear. As a foodie and former restaurant industry worker, I was impressed, but as a musician, I think that all the senses should work together.

Crazy spread of shinny, fresh, fish starring at you. The waiter walked us thru every fish. Very different than other restaurants when you order a fish, here you see it, touch it Its the real deal not covered in altering sauces, its simply the best fish in all NYC. Quality is there, perfection costs, servers not over bearing, great wines for everyone. If you havent been - GO!! ohh the desserts better go to the gym, the decor is hip, very tribeca as well as the crowd. yiasou - opa

I should have listened to last week's post. I took my parents to Thalassa for their 35th anniversary last night. The food was very good. And they brought out a warm chocolate cake with a candle in it for my parents - which was a nice touch.
But we specifically chose Thalassa for the $35 restaurant week all summer long special. It's shown on the menu as a 3 course price fix. But instead of the menu of 3 appetizers, 3 entrees, and 3 desserts to choose from - as per their website - the waiter said it would be a greek salad followed by grouper over calamari risotto with a phyllo custard dessert thing. As luck would have it, we all liked these and thus were all fairly happy with ordering the 3 course $35 price fix. But it was surprising and disappointing that the menu was not what was shown on the website - and frankly a bait and switch tactic just angers me on principle.

If you are looking for a restaurant with extended Summer promotion (Restaurant Week 2006) do not go to Thalassa. My girlfriend and I went there for dinner this evening, and you can imagine how angry the person must be, if I am writing this review at midnight! First of all, when I asked for a Restaurant week menu, they did not have it. The tasting menu ($ 35 value) was not up to a par ( salad (?), Fish and desert). I was explained that WAS a Restaurant week menu, but it really wasn't, if you check Opentable you will see a totally different menu. We had their tasting food anyway , I did not want to make a scene. Secondly, when I had a question about Greek wine list ,a waiter tried to sell me the most expensive bottles ( It is a No-No in my books). Our check was brought to us before we finished coffee, and not even asking if we want to have some more coffe the waiter took away sugar and milk. Real good service, ain't it? I was a very dissapointing experience for me I am not going back. Ever. Nor I recommend it to my friends.

My fiancé proposed to me during our 2yr anniversary dinner at Thalassa. The maitre'd and our waiters were all so lovely and provided amazing service. We ordered the scallops appetizer and a grilled white fish off the fish-by-the-pound selection. Both were delicious! After the proposal they gave us free champagne and dessert on the house. The champagne was a very good quality and the dessert was also quite good! We could not have had a more magical night if it were not for the staff at Thalassa. Thank you guys! Hope to hold our rehearsal dinner here :)

The restaurant greatest achievement is having collected so many enthusiastic reviews that suspiciously forget to mention how expensive it is.
I am one of the original Zagat reviewers, I have eaten in more than 500 restaurants in NYC alone and I have a weak spot for fish.
The food is good, at times very good, but to call Thalassa the best fish restaurant in NYC is way overextended. I can think of at least twenty other places that are, in my opinion, much better for fish than Thalassa. And quite a few of them cheaper than Thalassa.
68 dollars for a special-of-the-day crab main course and 87 dollars for a fish a la carte are definitely expensive. I guess someone has to pay for the fresh orchids in the restrooms!
Incidentally, the sheep butter thaty serve the bread with is very good; and desserts - totally unimpressive - can be skipped entirely.

my girlfriend brought me here for my birthday and i was beyond satisfied. the decor was wonderful along with the place not being overcrowded. the waiter was also very helpful and convinced us to try the sweetbread as an appetizer which pleasantly surprised us. for the main course i had probably the largest shrimp i've ever seen grilled up along with the risotto. overall a great experience.

We were both pleased with our entrees and the attentativeness of the waiter was perfect. Not too much and we were never lacking for anything. Planning to revisit very soon.

Celebrated my birthday with 2 other couples, What a pleasant, fantastic experience we all had at Thalassa. Even the comments from neighboring tables where just like ours, fantastic, Superb Dishes, Freshest, Unique Fish Staff was very accommodating with everything. My boyfriend selected an amazing Greek Wine, the name was something like Magic, we started with the white then the sommelier moved us into a Red, Rapsani Grand Reserve from Mt Olympus we all felt like we where drinking & eating with the Greek GodsGreat place cant wait to go back very soon.

I enjoy having drinks with my girlfriends in the beautifully-decorated, relaxing bar/lounge area of this restaurant from time to time. Excellent bartenders and an expansive wine list make for a good mix. One can sit either at either the long, marble bar (frequently decorated with rose petals, a nice touch), or if immediacy of service is not an issue, in the relaxing lounge area by the front window. The only thing preventing Thalassa from becoming my regular hang-out is the proximity of an obsequious and slightly creepy maitre d', but given all the plusses of this place, he's easy enough to ignore.

I took my wife here after hearing nice things from co-workers. Since we are both seafood lovers we were hoping for the best.....we weren't disappointed. I had a delicious lobster dish and my wife had sole roasted in olive oil. Both were extremely tasty. The wine list was excellent and the service was very attentive. We'd definitely go back again.

with 8:30 reservations for my birthday, we were not seated for another hour. our appetizers came out relatively quickly, but it was near impossible to get a hold of a waiter to order and get our drinks. after waiting over an hour for our entrees to arrive, we just gave up and asked for the check. there was no excuse for such extended waits, given that other (LARGER) parties who had arrived after we did, were already done with their meals. not until we asked for our check did the waiter start coming out with entrees. we declined and received NO apology for the poor service. after the horrible experience, the manager didn't even have the courtesy to acknowledge the bad situation. there was NO excuse for our poor treatment. they ruined our nights and left us hungry and searching for food at midnight. ok food, HORRIBLE SERVICE AND MANNERS!

A wonderful evening was spent at Thalassa. An upscale restaurant with spacious well appointed decor, excellent service and eceptionally well prepared food. The wine menu was overpriced--unless you order the moderately priced Greek Wines. Request the Wine Steward to suggest a wine from the wide selection of Greek Wines. We found our Greek wine to be surprisingly good!! This is essentially a fish restaurant --not your typcial Greek food. The fish dishes were outstanding!!!

I went here last week with my sister to try out the restaurant week prix-fixe menu. The $35 dinner was well spent. The food overall is above average but not awesomely great... I had the fish which was abit overcooked and the desert was way too sweet for our taste. However, the lamb my sister had was quite good. Also, they have excellent cocktail menu and we wanted to try all of them! The crazy apple martini was memorable. The waiter was attentive but not overbearing and gave good recommendations on the cocktails. The down-stair private party area seems conducive to a group gathering for special events.

The dinner started out just fine. My appetizer consisted of two overcooked shrimp, three very gritty mussels, and a surprisingly ordinary eggplant stuffed ravioli. My wife had Horiatiki, an incredibly uninspired Greek salad with soggy cucumbers slices. My wife shared 1 order of the langoustine pasta and 1 order of the grilled langoustines with the other young lady dining with us. Both versions of the langoustines were disappointing. The grilled ones in particular were overcooked, extremely dry, and utterly flavorless.
To top it off, the next morning both my wife and I felt unwell, the type of "unwell" that one generally does not expect to have after eating at a restaurant of Thalassa's caliber. I hope that this meal is not indicative of the majority of experiences at Thalassa. Instead of sharing a wonderful Thalassa experience with family, friends, and co-workers, I only have this torrid tale.

I cannot say enough good things about Thalassa. Went on a Saturday night with a party of 7. Thalassa is the most beautiful restaurant I have been to downtown. The decor is modern with high, high ceilings and a pre-war architectural feel to the space. The entrace bar is beautifully done in stark white with blue contrast lighting behind the bar. To the left of the bar is the main dining space done in dark wood with white curtains and white furniture. Downstairs is another dining area which is quieter and cozier. The whole space has an Ian Schrager hotel feel to it: Beautiful, artistic, simple and elegant. The food is good although expensive and the service is excellent. A great place to expense. Also a perfect date spot if you are looking to really impress a girl but, reaching for your wallet might hurt.

Had a few friends for dinner at Thalassa recently and we were all so delighted, that we were raving about the place the whole ride home. The restaurant was beautiful and the waiter was pleasantly accomodating. The appetizers were really tasty and the fish wonderfully fresh. They even have their own olive oil-which I naturally took home. I love anything Greek, and Thalassa brought back the memories of sitting bayside at a tavern in Greece sipping ouzo and enjoying freshly caught fish. I'll drink to that!

I wanted to impress a hot date and had heard rave reviews about this restaurant. I now know why! I consider myself to be a real foodie and had just had a great experience at Craft the week before so my expecatations were high. The entire experience was amazing. The decor is sexy and cool without being trendy. The scallop appetizer was, in my opinion 1 of the top 5 things I have eaten EVER!!! I am STILL talking about it. My main was the halibut which was cooked perfectly. The 1 downside was the apathetic service. While the waiter was extremely nice and accommodating, we sat for 10 minutes with closed menus and it was difficult to grab his attention. Although it could have been that he stayed away because I was very into my date. No matter - I will DEFINITELY be back!!!

I purposely created an account to leave a fantastic review about this restaurant! I told them it was an anniversary when i made the reservation and from the start of the evening, everyone was congratulating us. The service was impeccable and unmatched from anywhere else. It was very refreshing to have polite, courteous and attentive service, especially in NYC. The portions were perfect (almost too much) and although neither my boyfriend nor myself are not fish-connoisseurs and perhaps did not appreciate the 'freshness of the fish', the overall experience (the decor is beautiful!) was exactly what i was looking for for our anniversary. PLUS, they sent over a complimentary dessert (candle and all!) and wished us both a happy anniversary. and indeed it was!

Thalassa took me by surprise when i walked in last weekend wth a party of fifteen. The extravagant architecture and atmosphere was breathtaking. The greek wines were taste to perfection, continuing with appetizers, main course, and dessert. The fish fresh as you can find than anywhere else in NyC; everything was cooked to perection. Executive Chef Gregory Zapantis makes this cuisine work along with his staff, service was great, very knowledgeable of greek cuisine. The martinis are a must try, various selections for satisfying tastes of all customers.
I highly recommend Thalassa Restaurant for a night out, dinner, or even a formal event; There are three levels to choose from to compliment the occassion, the wine cellar, the main dining area, finally the loft perfect for a private party in any sense. We were amazed with everything this restaurant had to offer us and will be returning very soon!

Spacious and welcoming, Thalassa courteously offers up all the delights of Greece. Dark wood and a sleek marble bar give the TriBeCa space a crisp nautical allure. How fitting when fresh seafood is the star at this upscale Hellenic haven.…
