Food was good, service was ok - I was hoping to love this place but it was just ok.\r

Overpriced - when I left I found myself wishing I had gone for a facial and massage instead of spending two hours and two bills at the Mermaid\r

Having lived in Boston and been a seafood buyer, I am usually hesitant to order a lobster roll (or sandwich) unless a trusted source has recommended me to the restaurant. A lobster roll is simple in concept, but can easily go horribly

Love the fact that they have $1 oysters at the bar until 7PM. A dz of them with a bloody Mary and I'm in heaven.
The lobster bisque is to DIE FOR! Rich and creamy and decadent.
Had the salmon which was pretty good. I want to try everything o the menu...really!
Service was good and the drinks too.
Try asking to sit outdoors when it's a nice day and people watch.
Definitely coming back but now that I've told you about the place, I might be fighting for a table now! LOL!

Have been there all the time and never really have any problem with food or service at all. Been there tonight ... The server only came twice to take the order and drop the check. Spent over 80 for 2 people and realized that not only she have been ignoring us but every other table got the special " on the house dessert " but us. The busser was very nice by the way. I'd rather tip him than the server since he was the only person who took a good care of us. I work in a restaurant business so I still gave her 20% tip. But next time I'd rather go to Lure in Soho than going back to this place.

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday as it is her favorite restaurant in all of Manhattan and after eating the food I could see why. The moment I stepped in the restaurant I felt as if I was transported aboard a ship on the Atlantic instead of the Lower East Side. We were sat at a very quaint table in the back room which embodies brick wall on the sides. They create such a great ambiance and the food is not let down.
The crabcakes and little neck clams were absolutely delicious. I strongly recommend the Lobster Sandwich Combo which includes an incredible Lobster Salad sandwhich on brioche with Old Bay french fries and a Blue Point Toasted Lager beer all for $20.
Be Careful of the Old Bay Fries however, intense kick on them! Can't wait to return though!

This was a great experience. I went for my birthday and the service and food was great. Definately reasonable priced for the quality of fish you get. Substitutions were not a problem with also made our dining experience a good one. The only two negative things were the noise level (really loud that the waitress could even hear our order) and the LOBSTER ROLL. My boy friend ordered it and was highly disappointed. We were expecting a hardy amount of made with large lumps of lobester and ended up with a meager serving spread thing of what was more like a lobster spread :( I would definately go back but just to order the fish. Salmon and risotto was delicious as well as the roasted muscles appitizer!

Cons: Loud and the Lobster Roll was compartiablly way under par.

Went to this gem of a restaurant in the east village on a Monday night at 6:30 and had our choice of tables, by the time we left the room was filled! The atmosphere was pleasant and quiet enough for conversation and noisy enough to ensure you weren't being listened to! Wine list is short and to the point and very reasonable. Service was friendly, helpful and never pushy. The Golden Gazpacho w/blue crab was really to die for! Can't wait to return just for this! Calamari w/chipotle aioli was good, but be warned it's all about the breading, crunchy and tasty they also included breaded and fried lemon slices and fried parsley...a nice touch! Grilled Mahi-mahi set over perfectly crunchy veggies was devoured as was Spaghetti with shrimp and scallops! The menu has few choices but seemingly all were well prepared and can't wait to go back to try other items! Examples from the raw bar looked amazingly fresh.

Mermaid Inn recently re-opened with a spruced up menu and newly renovated digs, and I must say the place continues to fire on all cylinders. Yes, it can be difficult to get a table during peak dinner hours, but if you're willing to come a little early or later in the evening, you will be rewarded with simple, excellent seafood at a very fair price. Also, don't hesitate to have dinner at the bar - it's just as enjoyable. Stand-out appetizers include the beautifully crispy fried oysters with creamed spinach and truffle oil. The clam fritters were a little bit tastier when they were made with shrimp, but they're still crazy-enjoyable, served with a lemon-caper aioli. The tasty shrimp soup Veracruzano is a spicy tomato/seafood broth studded with plump shrimp and served with grilled bread. On the entre side, I very much like the pan roasted codfish with "New England chowder sauce" (basically cream, bacon and clams). The poblano mashed potatos that accompany the otherwise excellent grilled mahi mahi can be a little heavy, but the dish remains a winner. The lobster sandwich (basically a lobster roll on a hamburger bun) is certainly good, but I can think of a few places (Ed's Lobster Bar comes to mind) that are a little better. I've never had the only non-seafood entre, a double-cut pork chop, but it certainly looks tasty. Dinner ends with a complimentary cup of chocolate pudding with a dollop of whipped cream, and a Chinese fortune-teller fish to tell you what to prepare for as you stride out into the evening. The interior is casual and comfortable, and sort of evokes the inside of an old yacht. Service is generally very good.

My girlfriend and I came here as walk-in patrons because we couldnt get a reservation and she wanted to check this place out for Valentine's Day so I said sure why not. She was very interested in trying the lobster roll sandwich with old bay fries. Needless to say the sandwich was filled with more mayo and cole slaw or onions rather than any lobster at all. And the fries.. old bay fries you say, looked more like over-cooked regular McDonalds fries. I ordered the Mahi Mahi and the fish was very tasteless and overcooked. The only good thing out of this restaurant was the appetizers which were the crispy fried clams and the clam fritters. The dessert as others have mentioned was a complimentary chocolate pudding but that was pretty bland as well. All in all, it was a very disappointing experience and will definately not recommend this place.

Cons: Terrible food

I'd like to consider myself somewhat of a foodie after living in nyc for 9 years and trying to visit a new restaurant at least twice a month, though we all know its hard to veer from the tried tested and true delight of your local haunts. Mermaid Inn a 4 year old establishment (i've walked past it a couple times on my way to Franks) was this month?s new adventure. With the summer coming to a close and the need to stay in town over the Labor Day holiday my husband and I were looking for something to bring the nostalgia of mid-summer Montauk dinners to mind. Double Lobster Sandwiches - griddled buns, old bay fries would do the trick for sure. We ordered a bottle of wine and forgoed an appetizer to hold out for dessert in celebration of the last dog days of summer. Clearly this was a seafood spot that looked to fill the bill: nautical themed, dark wood, white and red wine that compliments any sea worthy meal. The most expensive item on the menu is the Lobster Sandwich ($26) not very expensive for crustaceans, true, but in Maine the Lobster Rolls are a mere $12 and I?d eaten five in a recent two-day trip so this Sandwich had promise for sure. When we both placed the same ordered the waitress said ?Smart People? ? smart in her eyes because the bill would be higher then the table next to us eating seafood pasta. Not more then five minutes came the catsup, cold plates and warm buns. The Lobster Sandwich should be called a Lobster Salad Sandwich ? filled with mayo and onions. A huge disappointment especially since my husband only eats HOT seafood. The ?old bay? fries were tacky. I?m not even sure there was potato in these skinny, undercooked clearly frozen poor excuse for chips. Our celebratory dessert?..a complimentary chocolate mousse. No dessert served here. I?d recommend skipping this place altogether. Save your night out for a better locale. Cheers.

Cons: poor rendition of a lobster roll

There is a lot of grumpy service in this city, but not at this place. The Mermaid Inn was a greatly needed breath of fresh air. Everyone I talked to from the host to our waitress was helpful and friendly. The food was amazing too. I had the shrimp scampi and the lobster sandwich and both were phenomenol. I'm no rookie to the NYC lobster roll scene either. This was the best I've had.

We had the lobster roll ( too much mayo! ),fried oysters (tiny and shriveled up) and oysters on the half shell, we had to send one back b/c it looked butchered. Tried the sardine in hopes of something a little original, but was overwhelmed with salt. The calamari was the worst I have ever had. I may be being a little harsh, but when you spend that kind of money you expect something half way descent.

I've been here a few times before, and when I asked my friend where she'd like to go for her birthday dinner, she immediately requested Mermaid Inn & their lobster rolls. We always have a lovely meal here. I strongly recommend making a reservation (ours was 6:30 on a Wednesday, nice and early and quiet). The shrimp cocktail appetizer was fresh, though there were only four shrimps. Our lobster rolls were delicious, as usual, as were the Old Bay fries (sigh). After our meals, we had a nightcap at the bar, and by then (8:30) the place was packed and noisy - but a fun atmosphere. For everyone who moaned about the noise & crowds, I suggest skipping lunch and dining early for a more relaxing experience (as is true for MOST popular NYC restaurants - whadaya expect???).

Loved the scenery, decent food... This quaint restaurant tricks you to thinking your in more of a New England fish house than the east village. Loved the suttle nuatical decor. Definitely recommend the grilled mussels..you won't even need the drawn butter. Had the skate wing with wild mushrooms for my entree but was completely emersed in oil. Lobster salad sandwich wasn't bad, but I would wait for the actual New England coast if your really in the mood for it.

Mermaid had some of the best food Ive had in a NYC restaurant. I had the grilled salmon with risotto and I literally licked my plate clean. Literally! It was incredible. I plan on returning again very soon. The music was also amazing, and even though it was a crowded Friday night, the servers were attentive and friendly. I strongly recommend this place!

This was my first time dining here and I loved it. I came here with my mother and we had a great time. We sat in the back which was a bit loud at times and could have had more light to view the menu. The calamari that we started off with was outstanding and the grilled salmon filet was delish. The service was superb I'll definately be coming back here.

I've eaten the lobster roll many times and I can't get enough of it!!! How can you go wrong with fresh cooked lobster and mayo on a brioche burger bun. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, and although the bar is sometimes crowded, which seems to slow service to the front, (it happened to be on a busy saturday night) i've found the staff knowledgeable and eager to please.

Seafood restaurants in NYC are hard to come by. Since the
reviews were on the good side I decided to try it. Wake up people!
Don't you know frozen lobster smeared with mayonaise disguised
in a roll when you eat it? The food is anything but cuisine. The
fried oysters were so small they wouldn't have been there if not
for the breading. The salad tasted like leftovers. The noise
was so loud that the waitress asked me to repeat my order twice.
How can chefs rave about this dump? The food was not even
passable. The menu was very limited. Mermaid Inn is more of a
bar and fast food joint.

Yummy. Yum. Yum. Fantastic raw bar, loved the calamari and probably had the best Lobster roll in my life. loved the decor. Great for an intimate sit down and fun at the bar too. I started at the bar with Erin and loved her peppercini Martini. Hot !! I will be back soon with more of my friends. Thankyou.

I was not impressed at all. It may have been a good lunch, but not dinner. The Wed. night special was served in a plastic basket? It reminded my of fish and chips and A&W? The napkins are paper and they do not have a desert menu? This is decent bar food but I would not recommend it for dinner in NYC. The best part of the night was our service. They were prompt and had a great attitude. I visit NYC every other week for business and eat at a lot of restaurats. I like to try new places but would not go back here for dinner.

The Tuna Tartare and the Lobster Roll are absolutely fantastic!! It will definitely become one of my favorites! I also enjoyed the martinis, though I don't specifically remember which one I had. Though a little slow (it was fairly busy), the waitstaff was friendly and got everything right.

I took my girlfriend on her B-day. We got there on time and were sitting right away. I have to say that service in this restaurante is one of the greatest I've ever experienced. They are attentive but gives you enough privacy. The food is delightful and melts on your mouth. The portions look small but are very fullfilling. We had Skillet roasted Mussels and crispy fried oysters as to start. We both loved the Mussels, oyster was interesting in taste. I had Tuna and she had grilled Salmon. Both were beyond expectations. The wine selection is good with reasonable price. Pinot Grigio was our selection and the whole bottle was well enjoyed.

I'm a more red meat eater than seefood, but this is definitely one of the best seafoods I've ever had so far, and the service was memorable.

We ate here in Oct 06. A very very special place. Lovely interior. Great simple reasonably priced menu. We both started with a super fish cake special and then went onto the mahi mahi. Wow. Nice touch with the little chocolate puddings for desert. As not much of a desert person, this was perfect for me. My girlfriend who has a bit of a sweet tooth loved it too. As a beer lover, I also really appreciated their thoughtful selection. We'll be back.

We had the lobster sandwich and it was FANTASTIC. My husband said he could've eaten several more, the portion was fine for me he even exclaimed that the french fries were the best he has had. We had the scallops as an appetizer and they were delicious and the sauce was wonderful. I recommend getting a reservation even though we saw people seated without one. We waited at the bar and had martinis that were just right. We will be back.

Pros: Lighting was nice, food fantastic, not seated to close to one another.

Cons: A little to expensive.

This place doesn't feel like the city. If you get to eat out back, you are in a nice fenced in garden. Portions are a good size and quite tastey seafood. The Rasberry Margarita's are made with real handcrushed elements and very tastey. There are a selection of nice german and fishermen beers.

Apt, dinner, and a couple drinks run about 80 bucks. Little high for the east village but defeinantly worth it. If you go, go early, or you'll be waiting for a table.

Wait staff was more than accomodating. It started to rain while outside and we were moved to a table inside while there was a line for tables.

Went here last night and had a pleasant experience. There are several options as far as seating goes (out front, inside, garden in back, etc.) The service was good and so was the food. Not cheap, but not that expensive either. Had 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and 2 cokes and the bill was ~$55.00, not including tip. Would recommend this place as a good date spot if you don't want to drop a ton of cash. Oh, and the complimentary pudding dessert was just enough- yummy!

Mermaid Inn is an overall good restaurant with really good seafood. The menu is limited but almost all of the dishes are excellent. The lobster sandwich is good and the spaghetti with Scallops and Shrimp is great. The service is good and ambience is good for a date or group outing. The only fallback on this restaurant is the prices. Even though its good seafood, the prices are too high. The lobster sandwich is $24 and although it was good it was not nearly enough to warrant that price.

we came here on a crowded saturday night and were seated right away despite being 15 minutes late for our reservation. service was efficient & courteous. two of us got the lobster roll ($24) while the other two opted for the codfish (w/sweet pea risotto in a carrot reduction) ($21). the bread on the roll was soft and buttery. the lobster salad was fresh-tasting, but they couldve been a little more generous with the meat. the bay fries were well-seasoned and came with vinegar for dipping (ketchup available). the codfish was decent and fresh (the reduction was especially interesting), but i found the white flesh slightly bland, though the skin was seasoned to perfection. in an effort to increase turnover, the restaurant offers no desserts beyond the complimentary espresso cup filled with chocolate mousse. overall, a solid restaurant and at less than $40pp (including wine), a solid deal as well.

Mermaid Inn used to be that reliable warm restaurant you would visit when you wanted a sure thing. Now the only reliable thing is the dessert cup at the end of the meal. I love the spag. w/ salad on top, but that has been relegated to Sunday (and Sundays only, the staff will not even entertain plopping a salad on top of spaghetti - which they already have anyway - just for you). This is esp. strange as the waitress mentioned they eliminated spag. w/ salad but brought it back due to customer demand. Unfortunately those customers did not demand it every day. Maybe they are trying to shift some income to a slower day, but the consensus among my friends is that we will just go elsewhere. The spag. w/ scallops/shrimp which replaced my fav dish is subpar and extremely salty.

I have been urged by friends for months to check out the mermaid inn. Finally, after all the raving I went to check it out with one of my enthusiastic friends this last Saturday night and let me tell you its all its cracked up to be. We started with lox and mussels (the best ive ever had, ever) and had the cod and trout for dinner. All of it was simply amazing, unique and tasty and best of all it didn't break the bank. The staff was knowledgeable and full of personality. From the moment we walked in they were more than accomodating even though the place was packed. All in all a wonderful experience, can't wait to come back.

We were asked to leave after 2 hours. The woman who collects checks in the back room told us there is a 2 hour limit for dinner and asked us to finish our drinks at the bar. We were not informed of this 2 hour limit before we sat down for dinner. Other restaurant rushes you, but The Mermaid Inn takes rushing to a different level; THEY SIMPLY ASK YOU TO LEAVE!! The food was okay. The food server brought caffeinated tea but we asked for no caffeine tea; and didnt feel the need to change it. I will not suggest this restaurant unless you dont mind the possibility of being asked to leave while you entertain out-of-town friends and spend a fortune on dinner.

This place was incredible. Staff was friendly and followed up to make sure we enjoyed our experience. I had the trout which was the crispy pan-fried meal of the night. Wifey had the skate which was so good, non-fish eaters probably wouldn't realize it was fish. Our friend had the grilled dorade and felt it was too boney (obviously not restaurant's fault - stupid fish). I wasn't a huge fan of the sardine appetizer ..too fishy. Overall great experience for the price (entrees hovered around ~$19). Definitely recommended, but make reservations in advance or good luck!

Very nice place, looked it up on CitySearch and went there after shopping with the wife one night. She loves seafood, while I'm it's not always my favorite but I really loved what I got. One thing you should know is there is not "land lubber" section. You better like seafood to some degree before going. But other than that, incredible food. High recommended.

I enjoyed my meal here, it's not great but it is ok. I had the whole fish which was tasty and good, the oysters weren't as fresh as the waitress said it was. The Lobster roll was very average, tastes much like everywhere else but on a round burger bun (brioche?) rather than a hotdog bun. the complimentarout half inch thick, they shouldn't ey pudding had a skin about a half inch thick, they shouldn't have even offered it. Overall decent for a place that's just seemed to be churning and burning table turns.

An otherwise good meal had a bad ending.
After our entree, the waitress brought us 2 espresso cups that looked like they were filled with mousse and whipped cream. I said, "oh, no, that's not for us" thinking she'd broght them to the wrong table. She whisked them away, almost in a temper, and set them aside, but they weren't served to anyone else.
When she brought the check I asked if the dessert was meant for us.
Yes, she said, it's complementary.
Hey, Lady, we're not mindreaders.
Mad because you have to wait tables?!
GET OVER IT!

Me and my boyfriend went there last Friday 'coz we read how great the restaurant was on citysearch. We ordered a shrip scampi, which was the Friday special, as a starter...it was good, but too much oil. I had a whole grilled dorade as the main course...again...it was way too greasy...and this time i could feel the greae in my throat after eating. It's not worth it consider we paid almost $90 for a starter and two main courses. But it's recommended to go without a high expectation.

I went in with a couple of girl friends a while ago, not entirely knowing what to expect, my friend chose the place. It turned out to be great! Our waiter Chad was adorable, I haven't had a staff nearly as friendly in a while. We followed his recomendations blindly and didn't regret it one bit. The lobster roll is great and the mahi mahi with the cold vegetables is so tasty to be so light. And even though I was stuffed I couldn't deny the chocolate pudding. Thanks to Chad and the mermaid inn for giving us a good night.

Been there several times and hope to return soon. Of 5-6 meals, have only one complaint -- on one visit, one lobster roll did not taste quite right, but, otherwise, the food is excellant. Affordable white wine list. I would not let on mediocre experience stop me from recommending this place highly. Ask to be seated up front.

An excellent destination for those looking for high quality, creative seafood, without the pretension of some other local fish houses. Wait-staff is knowledgeable and attentive, and is not afraid to make a recommendation. Last time I was there, I had mahi-mahi that was as flavorful as I've ever experienced. Overall, a great spot!

Just a warning parking was not easy. We had got there and we had to wait for a table - went to the bar and had drinks which were pretty good. The only con was the seating in which was a bench style with tables and chairs on the outside that were VERY close to each other. The food was excellent. Definitely recommend the west coast oysters and the rock shrimp balls w/ spicy sauce were ok. The lobster roll and fries w/ vingear were outstanding and so was the shrimp, scallops in the spagetti. Had a nice bottle of wine (german/austrian) name we couldn't pronounce. No dessert menu just a small complimentary chocolate mouse which was fine by me considering we ate so much. Overall great place and can't wait to go back and sit outside in the garden when the weather gets nicer!

The service is excellent: friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. In a city largely lacking good service outside of high-end restaurants, this is noticeable in and of itself. The food is solid. Wine list is solid. Atmosphere is lively and has an out-of-the-city feeling. Fun and relaxing place to go.

Overall, a good restaurant - nice atmosphere (a little more West Village than East Village), solid menu, prompt seating and fairly priced. What keeps it from being great? Service was friendly, but the food was poorly paced; waited 45 for raw bar/apps, then entree came too soon. Also, the wine list was moderately priced, but the selections seemed a bit limited (focus on some more obscure Australians). Was there on a Friday night and there were no specials, or at least we weren't told about them. Finally, there was no dessert menu. Everyone was given a complementary pudding, but no explanation as to why no dessert (menupages has a dessert menu for this restaurant). Anyway, an overall nice place and especially good if you want to take out your parents in the East Village.

I recently dined there with a group of 5 and I must say, they lived up to their impressive reviews. Our party of 5 was seated immediately. The service was impeccable! The waitstaff was so friendly and accomodating. But most importantly, the food was delicious. To everyone's surprise, the iceberg lettuce w/ blue cheese appetizer was very tasty. Most of us had the spaghetti with salad on top entree which was one of the best meals I've had in ages. And the cod was a huge hit too. We would have preferred more recognizable California wines on the list, but who cares?! I can't wait to go back and try the lobster sandwich that everyone raves about. I just hope they maintain their high standards - what a pleasure!

This is the spot to go if you are a seafood lover. They have exotic seafood such as skate which is cooked to perfection. If they can get that right I think everything else on the menu is bound to be great. I had the Mahi Mahi which was very good as well. Reasonably priced go here for some truly delicious seafood entrees.

Though on the zagat they talk about their no-rezzie policy at this village seafood shack that gets quickly overcrowded in the front...I was easily able to snag a reservation for dinner on a Wed. night to taste one of the best fish plates I had in a while. I ordered the sea scallops for appetizer and the skate for my entree...WOW. The skate was juicy and meaty and went perfect with the corn/red onion relish that its served with. The stuffed dorade also had an excellent citrus/savory flavor to it...and the lobster sandwich though small in size had real big chunks of tasty lobster bits and came with a side of their specialty old bay fries! Overall I truly enjoyed this restaurant and do plan to go back whenever I crave some good but simple seafood.
