The decor was very japanese. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the sake menu was to read with friendly and imaginative descriptions. The sushi and cooked entrees were all deliscious. I had the king salmon sashimi appetizer which was fresh. My favorite part of the meal was the miso braised short ribs. The meat was so flavorful and falling off the bone. The green tea tiramisu was also a good spin on an Italian dessert. I would definitely recommend Matsuri to other people and plan to come here again.

Cons: Entrance was a slight challenge to find when buzzed...

This place is a hot spot. I walked in on a Friday night with no reservations, and got a table in 5 minutes. The place was packed with an energetic crowd that made my experience here 10 times better. To some it up the sake was great, the food was to die for, and the service unbelievable. I wish I could have taken home the chef so i wouldn't have to cook anymore. That's how good the food was.

Recommendation- Sake Black Cod, and Sea Bass

This is definitely not the place to go if you truly enjoy japanese home-style cooking. We ordered a side of lotus roots and the preparation was completely off. Instead of a cruncy, flavorful starter, every bite was mushy and some even gooey. I love uni and order it everywhere I go, at $7 a piece I expected the uni to be nothing but fresh, one bite and the slime just covered my tongue even though I tried to wash it off with beer it lingered. The rock shrimp tempura appetizer had bits and pieces of ambigious looking shrimp. The cocktail I ordered was atrocious, it took everything in me to finish it since I was chocking down three huge (and very dry) portions of the yellow tail entree. The recommended sake was also horrible, perhaps I shouldn't have gone by the glass, but at $11 I figured it couldn't be bad, but it was. The whole lobster entree wasn't quite whole, I think the claws were missing and some other essential lobster parts. I have to say that the only redeemable thing about the place was the 18 grain rice ball. The decor and the staff, all of whom were very nice made me embarassed to return my drink and entree. Going once is enough to realize that the place is all hype.

A stunning venue, it seems to be in a whale belly, with beautiful paper lights hanging from the high ceiling. Certainly surprising as it is the food, not only standard sushi fare but also new inventive plates. A very good Sake, and wine list.

amazing sushi, better than megu or morimoto. Large atmosphere, but never seems empty. Just let them bring whatever the chef feels makes the best tasting menu and you will have a phenomenal meal. If not going as heavy, the sushi is great too and very fresh. Great sake menu with seasonal selections.

Been there once, and it is enough. Yes it is a touristy joint and I suppose I should have expected this, but the mediocrity under a false pretense? why?? I don't know what the people below have been smoking but the food here is simply not good . It just tasted bad. I have ordered different things, over and over again hopelessly trying to score a better plate however... no success. The next dish was worse the one before. Same for my friends. I am sorry but NOT WORTH it.

BTW, drinks weren't good either. They just don't care. People with no idea about food will come there wearing their tight muscle shirts and girls with tasteless makeup, and be happy.

That's the way the cookie crumbles.

Pros: can't think of any.

Cons: overrated, overpriced, bad fish, pretentious, simply bad

Wow. Just... wow. Some of the best fish I've ever had. Yes, it's expensive. But it is SO worth it! The sashimi platter my friend and I shared was delictable.

I've been to just about every sushi place around here and this is, hands down, the best. They also make their own pickled ginger. And there was fresh wasabi. Which is kick you in your butt fantastic!

I wanted to take a chance on a lesser known restaraunt, as I had never heard of Matsuri I looked it up to find a great menu and pictures of the space. Upon arrving I could immediately see this place was a bit more run down and less elegant than the pictures actually showed. We waitied a bit for a table even though I had made a reservation. We were then seated on what seemed like benches covered with thin patio furntire padding. The food we ordered was farely common and was prepared as if we were eating in our neighborhood sushi place (the sushi would have actually been better had it come from our neighboor hood place). Absolutely nothing stood out at this place at all, I would have much rather have had what I am sure would have been yet another phenomenal time at Buddakn or Buddha Bar right now the street.

My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday night for a birthday dinner. We ordered sashimi/sushi platter for two and it was amazing. the fish was fresh, the presentation was great, and an interesting/impressive variety. We were serviced by a very attentive and friendly server, and we really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. Everything about/in the restaurant was authentic - this is definitely our new favorite sushi spot!

I've never been the most enthusiastic fan of sushi and fish dishes, but Matsuri went a long way to changing that. The food was sensational and the staff went out of their way for us. Highly recommend it.

I have ate at many Sushi places (incuding Japan) and Masturi nailed it. Great atmosphere, attentive staff and excellent food. Not just the regular California rolls, but interesting, tasty dishes with great presentation.

I've eaten at Matsuri five or six times in the last year and each time I have been absolutely amazed. When a restaurant is this good, time after time, you know they are top notch. The sushi is masterly prepared and quite novel with beautiful presentation. Oh, and it tastes incredible! I tried dozens of items off the menu and have never been disappointed. Lastly, I just can't say enough about their ginger sakinade. This is my new favorite cocktail. It is a true 'must try'!

An exciting, spacious and vibrant room, extremely attentive and prompt service, innovative drinks, an incredible diversity of sake and the sushi is out of this world - fresh with a nice presentation. This is simply the best Japanese restaurnat that I have experienced. This was my 10th visit - I come every time I visit NY -and the experience is consistently top notch. You have to experience Matsuri!

You have not had a sushi dining experience until you dine at Matsuri, in the Maritime Hotel. I just had the most fantastic dining experience. Whether you are with a group or on a romantic escapade, this restaurant has it all. Two thumbs up for the chef. Their sake selection was delightful. A dining experience you must experience when visiting NY city.

Tadashi Ono's cuisine is the best i've had. Decor & ambiance are great, service is NY style not awful, not great. Great location near the meat packing district. Good value and good prices.

This is one of my favorite japanese restaurants around. The food is terrific! I was expecting tiny portions given the affordable prices... We ended up ordering way too much and it was all terrific. The hosts and servers were also very friendly and accommodating. The decor is absolutely stunning. Overall, it's hard to find fault with a restaurant like this. Highly recommended.

This place is gigantic, and feels like an aircraft hanger inside. The sushi is good too, and make sure to have the green tea tiramisu to top it all off. Some tables can be cramped, and the waiters take their time. But with nice decor and somewhat quiet atmosphere it's good for dates.

I went there with a party of 5 1/2, 1/2 being a baby, on Saturday night. The food, service and ambiance were excellent w/ some of the freshest sushi I've had and I eat sushi fairly often. A place to definitely check out.

Ok, perhaps the title is a slight exaggeration, but mind you it's slight. The point is, the food at Matsuri is very average at best, but without the average prices. The rolls are good but not great, but it's your more standard fare (admittedly not authentic Japanese) like the Teriyaki Chicken that disappoint. For a $20+ entree, you're getting something that's no different than what you'd find at a place like Teriyaki Boy. On the other hand, the place does have nice ambiance and a "hip" scene if that's what you like. Bottom line, if you want good Japanese food Matsuri ain't it. If you want a scene, and like watching beautiful people then this might be the place for you. Of course, it'd probably just be easier to walk down the street into the heart of the meatpacking district, stand outside of Hotel Gansevoort and do the same thing. And mind you, that won't cost you a penny...

I really wanted to like this place but I just didn't. The space is beautiful but for the prices the food should have been incredible and it wasn't. Full of guys with hair gel and gold chains, even on a Thursday night. I enjoyed it because I was with my friends, service was good, but I will not be going back.

Had a fabulous meal here! The decor is beautiful and the restaurant is spacious and well designed (with a bar on the 2nd floor!).

Everything from cocktails to dessert was fresh, innovative and flavorful!

Service is extremely helpful and attentive. Our waiter even comped us our $22 dessert sampler!

Will DEFINITELY be back!

I had the pleasure of eating at Matsuri last week. We enjoyed three rolls in the lounge while ordering drinks from the bar. All sushi was incredibly fresh. The white tail and spicy tuna rolls were amazing. Service was overall very good and attentive with great recommendations for my friend who had never eaten sushi before. The space itself is incredible and enormous. Matsuri is definitely on par with the finest Japanese restaurants in the city (Nobu, Morimoto) in terms of ambience and fresh cuisine. The true test will be entrees and I've already made a reservation for a group dinner to sample the rest of the menu

I've now eaten three times at Matsuri. The main dining area is a knockout when you first walk in. There's a small bar and cozy seating up top. The sake list is impressive. Service is top-notch and beautiful people abound. Oh, the food? The food is fresh and delicious. Lobster soup, oysters with shaved citus-ice, kobe beef "sushi", crabmeat dumplings, duck, sushi and sashimi are all wonderful. I enjoyed other dishes that were consistently good. I like Matsuri a lot. Yes, it's a tad expensive, but worth the splurge.

I came here a couple of weekends ago with a party of 5 and we were seated rigt away. We had an 8:15 reservation and when someone called to confirm I told them we needed to be out by 10 as we had to get somewhere by 10:30; however as a result of the spacey service, we arrived at 10:45. The waiters are obviously spread way too thin and often times he seemed impatient and in a hurry to move on from our table. Despite all that, we moved through dinner at a decent pace. We finished at about 9:30 but it took us until after 10 to get our check!!! Oh, and it as way to hot in there! I'm glad I can say I've been, but I probably won't be rushing to return...I've definitely been to better.

Whether you are going out on a date with your sweetheart or out for a night with the girls, Matsuri is the way to go. The decor is amazing. The whole interior is dark wood with high ceilings that are complemented by huge paper machete lamps. The cocktails (though more expensive than the food) are great- I recommend the Japanese style mojitos. Every course is so well presented. For dinner I would recommend the steak or lobster- both excellent.

After dinner you can stop right next door at HIRO which also has the same type of décor. There is no cover to get in and there is alright mix of music.

Went here recently for dinner and its a very nice japanese place. its not too loud or overtly trendy. the decor is pretty and the space with its high ceilings makes it seem nice and airy, not in the least bit suffocating. the sushi is very fresh and of course plated very nicely. sake was good as well and the service was very attendant to keep those cups full. hahaha. overall a great time and a nice place to eat. plus your right in meatpacking so its got great places to hang afterwards if nextdoor hiro isnt your scene.

The space itself is beautiful so if you are looking merely to be in a festive spot, then I would reccomend this restaurant. Aside from the look, the food was terrible. The sushi did not taste fresh, the rolls were bland and the appetizers were also pretty sub par. Not sure why everyone raves about the food. The sake menu is pricey but they have some very nice selections. Overall, I would not reccomend this place.

The ambience is stunning and the food is really good, but the portions are RIDICULOUSLY small...then look at the prices, and you will definitely think it's a joke. I have been to many of the best Japanese places in the city, and I have never left hungry like this. We just kept ordering more and more food (both sushi and non-sushi) and it just didn't do the trick. We finally gave up and got snacks elsewhere. We will not be returning.

I don't normally like trendy celeb spots but I heard this place had great food to boot, so off we went, my husband and I. It was quite beautiful inside, like the inside of a vast hallowed-out boat turned upside down. My husband ordered the duck and I ordered the sake black cod. He didn't like his duck as much as I liked the cod. It was one awesome tasting cod with perfect flakiness and great sauce!

i've been here twice and liked it both times. the food is great, if on the expensive side, and the service is good. unfortunately, the pre-dinner "sakenade" drink recommended on this site was awful! sour to the extreme, and the bar tender conceded he makes his drinks "on the sour side"... for 13 bucks not worth it. the mohito was just as bad. would go back but stick to the food.

The first thing you'll notice when you arrive is the very cool, comfortable atmoshpere, you'll feel like you're in for a fun night. Recommend making a reservation and sitting downstairs if possible in order to enjoy the full effect of the room. Food is excellent, my favorite dish is the mushroom appetizer cooked in paper - yum. Their whole fish dishes, whether on the menu or as specials, never disappoint. Is also good for just sushi. I've been to Matsuri multiple times with multiple friends/colleagues and we've always had a good time.

Pros: Ambience, Food

I was not very impress with the service at this place. Can the wayters smile once in a while? It was just too much happening and didn't get to enjoy my food.

i've been to this place couple times and compare to all the bad reviews this restaurant has it is really not that bad. it is definately one of those 'checking out to see if there's any celebrities' place but i think i saw someone who looked like colin farrell. their food is good (head-on shrimp, fried sea bass, lobster sashimi) service is not so great. Martini..don't waste your money, stick to sake or beer. i hear so many people talkin about how they weren't seated on time, had to wait.. make your RESERVATIONS!!and it is not so bad if your wait about 5 min even with a reservation. if you are walking into the place with already pissed off mood..of course you are going to have terrible experience. calm down people and if you don't like it so much, complain on the spot maybe they can fix it!

Don't believe the hype! This place has the worst Japanese food in all of NYC. Most items on the menu sound great but what comes out of the kitchen is something else. The Kobe beef was frozen first of all and oh, it wasn't Kobe beef. As for the sushi...<- that's about the size you're gonna get here. Do you like it warm? Yeah, me neither.
The service didn't suck as much as the food but there was probably as many waiters, busboys and staff running around as there were customers.
You can always tell the quality of a Japanese restaurant by counting the number of Japanese patrons, if any. I didn't see any at Matsuri (besides me).

Went here last Saturday and was definately not disappointed. The room is beautiful. They were extremely overbooked and we waited 40 minutes to be sitted but what do you expect on a Saturday night. While we were waiting, it was frustrating because we wanted to get a drink but the bartenders were just too over-worked. Also the $13 cocktails aren't anything to write home about. Stick with the beer, its good, its different, and its cheaper in comparison. Once we were seated, the service was wonderful. We were very pleasantly surprised at the prices for such a trendy place. In total, we spent about $35 a person including the beers at dinner. That really isn't bad at all. The sushi was a little too salty for my taste and the portions are small. Try the shrimp dumplings for an appertizer, very good!

Have dined at Matsuri a dozen times and each time is as good as the first. The food is terrific, service is very attentive and the scene is great. Bar scene is electric and dining room is always good for at least one celebrity sighting. Great for meals with close friends or family, not so great for business as most of the entrees are not sufficiently large to be meals in and of themselves and require sharing. For a date or casual dining, absolutely cannot go wrong here. Just make sure you make a reservation.

I recently went to Matsuri's for dinner and it was great. We got seated right away. Our waitress was very friendly. The presentation on the food was really nice and the food overall was very fresh. I am planning to go back again.

I went to Matsuri last night for an early valentine's day dinner with my bf. The ambience was beautiful and spacious and the food was spectacular. The service was also very friendly. I can't wait to go back!

Just had a business dinner there last night. The food was great and the service was flawless (almost to the point of too much). The bill was reasonable, we didn't have to wait (although the table was a little small for our party of 5), and we were not rushed. I'll go back.

This place is terrible. First of all, we were a party of five and they seated us at a table for 4. When we asked if we could have the nearby table for 5 people, they said it was for another party. We ended up having to put a chair on the end which blocked foot traffic. Now why wouldn't they have given us the 5 person table since we were seated first, makes no sense right? Well get a load of this, when the other party was seated, they were only four. Do you believe that? How freakin rude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And if that's not enough, the food sucked. I've had the same caliber sushi from a supermarket. Our entire party was very disappointed with the food.
The atosphere is nice and our waitress was very nice, but that's about it! There is so much better out there for the money!

Perfect! lovely lovely lovely... The food was incredible! (GET the sirloin steak, the duck breast, the mushrooms, the seared tuna, sake black cod - the tasty list goes on and on). The sushi/sashimi fish practically swam in from the ocean, its firm suppleness is rarely found. The rolls could be a bit more varied but they are so good! - delicately soft and chewy... The specialty cocktails and the sake are out of this world, created with real japanese style. The bartenders are FUN and enthusiastic - the waitstaff was wonderful and attentive. While it can get packed Thurs - Sat it's worth the energetic atmosphere. For truly quiet and private nights go on a Sunday or Monday (slow nights means more personal attention) The decor is unrivaled in its gorgeous arched ceiling and floaty imported japanese lanterns. Celebrity watching a + and a definate new favorite of mine...

The decor of Matsuri definately speaks louder than its food. Went there on a weeknight with reservations and did not have to wait at all. Appetizers were tasty as was the sushi and rolls. The food was good but not outstanding. Prices were expensive for the tiny portions. Wait staff was attentive and helpful. The decor was pretty impressive. A good people watching restaurant. Definately worth a try.

Went to Matsuri for my third and final time last night. The food and service has deteriorated with each visit. We waited a long time for our food and one of our appetizers showed up after we finished dinner. The Sake Black Cod was sub-par and the Sea Eel Tempura was like a supermarket fish stick. The sushi was good, but the piece are the smallest that I've seen in NYC. Trust me, given the prices, this place just isn't worth it. There is much better sushi all over NYC. The atmosphere is good, but we were seated in the side room, not the main dining room. And, it was dull in there.

Matsuri is the kind of place you go to check out the amazing interior and people watch. Made res on a Sat. night and had to wait 1/2 hour for our table. Restaurant is gorgeous but don't expect great things from the food. My miso cod was sub par and sushi was ok. Even the chocolate dessert wasn't worth the calories to finish. But the space is so great that you'll just sip your drinks, enjoy your company (hopefully), and watch the people around you ...
