I have been a loyal customer to HeaD AreA since last winter and would never, ever consider going anywhere else! I see Julie and she's amazing. She's an expert when it comes to hair and really understands color and how to bring out the physical best in her clients. She's also a meticulous hair cutter and treats each cut like it's the best cut she's ever given. If you like to experiment and try new looks, Julie is definitely the girl to see! Actually, you could see any one of the stylists at HeaD AreD and leave looking awesome. As for the salon in general, the staff is always friendly and extremely helpful. Admittedly it's not a cheap (I've never spend less than $120 on cut and color) but for how good you look, it's worth every penny. This is a salon where you get exactly what you're pay for. Keep in mind, though, that appointments are tough to book and you'll probably need to do so at least 4-6 weeks in advance.

I am loving my haircuts from JoJo at HeadArea. I am actually moving to New England and will be returning to have my hair cut by her. This salon is great for giving great cuts that are edgy without being over the top or crazy. I am always happy with my cut right after I leave the salon. I never have to go home and get used to it or play with it - its perfect! I would def. check out this salon if you want something stylish and not the same old boring cut. The atmosphere is very chill to and not obnoxious or loud like most salons. This is def. the best salon to check out in Philadelphia

I have been going to Tami for years at Ruth's salon and am so pleased to she is truly where she belongs. A fun creative atmosphere where you can really see artists at work. The staff here are all so friendly too! not to mention shopping, which all girls love.. give Tami a try , you won't be disappointed

I have been going to Lauren for over a year now at Head Area and have yet to have a bad experience. She is extremely professional and incredibly talented, especially with my color!

When I moved to Philadelphia, I tried so many different salons, including the ones that charge outrageous prices, but was less than impressed with the results. Head Area provides its customers with the perfect blend of experience, great customer service, and reasonable prices. I highly recommend it!

I have been searching years for the right stylist to give my usually boring bob-with-bangs some hip style and edge - without the edgy attitude. After reading the reviews on this site, I just had to call to find out what kind of prices to expect. I was pleasantly shocked to find such reasonable pricing for such a well reviewed salon. I went to Nick at Head Area for the first time yesterday and left with exactly the look I've been longing for! Nick listened to my likes and dislikes and made me feel very comfortable with the experience. His attention to detail and precision with his cutting gave me the best haircut I've had in a long time! Ruth also did my color and talked with me at length about my color choices to be sure we'd get the right shade of chocolate brown. Its perfect! Nick, Ruth, and the rest of the staff were really nice and easy to talk to during my three hour cut and color - a definite plus if you're going to be spending that kind of time in a salon. Thanks for such a great experience!

The fact that I live in New York City and make special trips down to this salon should say it all. Julie is amazing! Im really into bobs right now, and every time I leave the salon I say "No, I swear, this time its my favorite." She and the rest of the staff are always ahead of the trends, and will never do something to your hair that you wouldn't want. They also make you feel comfortable and want to get to know you. I highly highly recommend it.

I just returned from my second trip to Head Area. Lauren cut my hair today, and I think she did an amazing job. She was very friendly and took her work seriously. I love my haircut and my bangs are fantastic! Everyone there rocks! My boyfriend experienced his first cut at Head Area today with Nick, and he was equally as pleased! We both can't wait to go back again!

My very first visit to Head Area had me in the chair with Lauren. She was rather arrogant and I did not feel welcomed in the least. My cut was fine, however, my highlights were completely wrong. You couldnt even tell I had any. For the price, I would have expected something more than decent.

I found Head Area when my stylist started working there, and what an amazing place. I see Julie who is a true artist and professional. The entire staff are curtious and friendly, and i always enjoy my time there. The hair is impecable. These people are true hair professionals. They know their products, colors and most of all, how to really cut someone's hair to make them feel beautiful and unique. Highly reccomended.

This past week I had my first visit to HeaD AreA?what a wonderful experience! The staff is really laid-back and friendly and the service was top notch! I can?t say enough good things about owner/stylist Stephen. He took my long-over processed-hair and transformed into a gorgeous hip cut. The true test of a great cut is that you?re able to duplicate the style at home and I had no problem obtaining the same look that I left the salon with. Thank you so much Stephen!! I can?t wait to see what ideas you?ll have for my hair color!

You would think they were too hip to be kind...not so! I have known JoJo for years...took me a while to take part in her mastery. But Mastery it is. Here is the key. She has great hair! What is up with Hairstylists that have bad hair? She is warm and kind. Every time I see her she take time to speak with me about what we are going to do. If I give feedback about what I do or do not like she doesn't look at me like I have five pairs of eyes. And she has some kind of psychic, voo doo intuition about cutting and color, not to say that it isn't skill, but she often knows what I want before I even say it or if I do not have the words to communicate it. Most of all everyone their has great hair, and it is a little like a cutting edge (def. competitive with the talent in NYC, I am a native) Londonesque Cheers where people actually know your name, seem genuinely glad to see you and always greet you with a style making haircut instead of a beer.

Julie's been doing my cut & color for years, and even though I've since moved to Brooklyn, I make the trip back to Head Area every single time because I just can't imagine going to anyone else. My hair isn't the easiest to manage, but she's consistently done an amazing job, especially through some pretty drastic color transitions. She's totally innovative but also very down to earth and I always love my hair when she's done with it! On top of that, Head Area is a fantastic salon and everyone who works there is awesome... it's always a great experience.

Stephen and Jojo are the best colorists in the city. They've both got a great eye. Talking with them about color is like a deep strategy session. Also, they won't let you ruin your hair: they're honest about what can and can't be done, and if your "wants" are realistic. That alone is worth the price.

I love that they will never try to push a product line on you, or do any sales pitches. One of the best cuts I ever got was when I was really honest with Jojo, and told her that since I was broke, I wouldn't be able to come in for at least 6-8 months &needed a cut that would grow out well. It turned out wonderful.

In 8 years (from their migration from East End to here), I've had cuts by Jojo, Stephen, Lee and Sasha. It's all good.

There is no competition with HeadArea. There is this salon, and there are the rest of the salons in Philadelphia. Come to HeaDAreA if you want style, artistic touch, and people stopping you on the street to ask where you got your hair done. I was the type of person that would go from salon to salon because I never was satisfied. When I started coming here, I was hooked. Not only are Lee, Jojo, and Steven amazing at their craft but they only hire the best of the best so NO MATTER which chair you sit in you will walk out looking hot.

You guys are amazing and have so much passion and I really truly respect that and love coming here!

OH, and the bonus...Everyone that works here is hot. So you have some hot eye candy while you are getting worked on in the chair!

I have been meaning to write this for some time now. A close friend of mine went to Lee way way back in the day and for years had told me about how great he cuts and styles hair. After years of listening to her rave I made the decision to make an appointment with him....Needless to say, Lee has been cutting my hair now for over 5 years and never could imagine going anywhere else. Everyone at Head Area is WONDERFUL. . . Lee, JoJo, Stephen, and all the new folks! It is great to see so many new faces when I visit. Thank you for everything and keep up the stellar work.

I have been getting my hair done with Jenna for several years as she mirgrated from different salons in and around the Philly area. I would never think of going to anyone else. Her specialty is dreds and extentions, but let me tell you she does a hell of a job on coloring my locks. She helped me transition from my mousey natural hair into a platinum blonde and it looks amazing. A few months back she cut my hair into a great bob. I drive over an hour out of my way every 5 weeks just so she can do my hair, I would never trust anyone else. I suggest giving her a serious try, whether it's something dramatic or a simple monthly trim, you won't be dissapointed. Her new home at Head Area is also great, the relaxed atmosphere at the salon is refreshing.

I don?t know what I would do if I didn?t have Jenna! I live in DC and I drive to Philly (regardless of weather) just for her. She has been doing my extension work for over three years and I will never go anywhere else. My hair is fine & limp but it always looks naturally perfect when she?s finished. She does everything right, great cuts & color too. When I had dreadlocks she did that as well. She uses quality hair and is very meticulous so I have no damage. If you are thinking about extensions Jenna is the best in the business, I can?t recommend her highly enough.

Julie is hands down a hair genius! When I first moved to this city, a friend recommended her to me. Now, if I ever moved out of Phila, I would come back just for the haircuts! I have the worst hair type ever (coarse, dry, wavey, thin) and she masterfully cuts my hair in such a way that it's so easy to style. I always tell people that she is the only stylist that I have gone to that did not make me cry afterwards.

Not only is she good at cutting it, but she also gives me styling tips so that it's easy for me to maintane my style.

Just to give you an idea of how good Julie is, even my mother loves my hair!

Julie has been cutting my hair for the past three years and I have followed her to three different salons (Head Area being the newest and BEST). If Julie started cutting and dying hair out of a box located on the corner of 5th and Diamond, I would follow her there too. She is simply amazing. When I first came to her three years ago my hair was ratty, boring, and hard to manage. Since then she has worked with me to find a cut and color that fits my style and frames my features. When I go to Jullie, I'm not always sure what I want to happen to my hair...but she consistently comes up with something new and innovative; I leave her chair feeling happy and most importantly HOT. I'm currently enjoying a really cute, funky, choppy bob.

Julie has never disappointed me and I will continue to get my hair cut by her until she can no longer hold scissors. Your hair is missing out. I feel bad for your hair.

I made the decision to cut my long hair (which was past the middle of my back) shoulder length. After being unsatisfied with my current ctiy salon, I read all the positive reviews for Head Area and scheduled an appointment. I received the best haircut of my life from Lee. I have never scene a stylist cut hair the way he does. He also made what could be a very stressful experience (1st time cut as well as all the length) extremely relaxing. I also had my hair colored by Stephen and could not be more satisfied. He was very meticulous and has an artistic eye for what color best suited by features and complexion.If you are stuck in a rut with your current salon or just looking to see what else is out there, you defintely want to give these guys a shot. I am confident you will not be disappointed. I was even aproached by a stranger as I walked up walnut who asked to buy me a drink...Need I say more??? Thanks guys ;o)

Because I love Lee and JoJo! I followed them from East End and would follow them anywhere! Lee is so talented and creative with his hair cuts....I have very boring hair (stick straight, lifeless, limp, etc.) but Lee gives it life and body. I trust his ideas, so if I don't have any I just tell him to do whatever he wants and I always love it. He definitely has his own style, but he doesn't force it on you. He gets to know your own personal style and creates a haircut that suits you and makes you look your best. JoJo is just as awesome with color. I always want to do something just a little bit different than last time and she knows how to tweak the color just right.

Head Area is the only place I'll go for my hair needs and would recommend it to everyone. I really don't think you can find their creativity matched with amazing skills anywhere else.

After my first haircut and color from JoAnn and Lee eight years ago, I doubted I would ever be happy with ANYONE else doing ANYTHING to my hair. And I was right! Because I have since lived as far away as Belize, I have had to suffer through 2nd rate haircuts and highlights. But on every trip back to Philly, one of the first tasks on my to-do list is to go get my hair done with either JoAnn or Lee! Whether it has been blond highlights, trims, chopping off my long hair for a cute short 'do, or dying my faded locks to a rich, dark brown, I have always been happy (usually ecstatic) leaving the salon. Now that they have their own salon (congrats!!!!), I am even happier to patronize them and excited to see how HeaD AreaA grows in the future. I recommend HeaD AreA to anyone who wants a great haircut and/or color from stylists who listen to what you want and have so much talent that the end result is always... gorgeous! :-)

I have been a loyal client of lee and jojo clapson for the past seven years which they have been very successful hairstylists for two major salons in Philadelphia.
I have traveled from Washington DC in the last five years to get the best hair for a very reasonable price.(i moved away and never found a stylist who would listen to my needs)
The new venture with HeaD AreA is the best thing they could have done as they grow from strength to strength from lucky magazine to Vogue.

I made the decision to donate my hair to Locks of Love and was nervous about getting it cut because my hair had never been above shoulder length. I was also concerned about how I would look with short hair given my facial structure and hair texture.

I then decided to look for a salon in Philadelphia and read about HeaD AreA in Lucky magazine, and also found them in the Best of Philly issue of Philadelphia magazine. With that, I decided to make an appointment with Stephen. What could have been a potentially scary experience, turned out to be one of the best!!! My new stylist took the time to talk with me about my hair as addressed all of my concerns In doing so, he made me feel extremely comfortable and confident in him and needless to say, the end result made me even more confident in his work.

I have never received more compliments and couldn't be happier with the color and style! Since my fabulous new cut and color, I cant count how many times I have given out the salons contact information to adoring on-lookers and have recommend every stylist on the HeaD AreA team. They take pride in their work and it shows!

As for the salon itself, it has a cool young vibe and is tucked away in the wonderful world of Matthew Izzo Lifestyle! I highly recommend this salon and its stylists.

I recently needed to find a new stylist and decided to give the "Best of Philly" issue a try for a recommendation. Big mistake! They recommended this place and still I no idea why. I'm not sure what the magazine's criteria is but someone needs to seriously evaluate who wrote the original article.
I went with a friend who also found the place to be horrible. The place advertisies a consultatation before your appointment so my friend and I did this first. We liked what they recommended and decided to make the appointment for the following 2 weeks. But when we went back they could not remember what they told us and therefore had to go through the whole "consultation" process again! The worst part was that what they told us the first time was not what they said the second time.
In any event, my color turned out to be streaky, overhilighted, damaged and the toner was too dark. I wanted my natural base a shade lighter with a few blond highlights. This I did not get. I currently have 5 different colors in my hair.
And the haircut is even worse!! I requested a bob that was longer in the front with bangs, and wound up with a bad Jennifer Aniston cut. The cut was so bad that I had to find another salon to fix it the following day. Head Area is as far from the "Best of Philly" as you can get.

From the Trainees to the Experts who own Head Area, it's mindblowing to see their work! From their elite customers that stop in to the normal everyday people (like me) - you can easily see that they know Hair! Everyone is incredible at what they do and you can see the results immediately! I'm very picky about my hair cuts, and i found this place to be perfect! You would never see this place as it's tucky inside the Mathew Izzo store, but it's a gem to be discovered! What I loved was that they don't bombard ur head with a million products to make it look good, they cut and style your hair, so you can do the same at home! You feel like a super star walking off the set of a shampoo commercial when they're done! Ask them for recommendations and they'll make you look gorgeous, and if you know exactly what you want, tell them and they'll do just that! You will NOT be disappointed walking out of this salon!

One word sums this place up - Awesome. Tucked away in the back of a cool home furnishings/gallery/boutique, this unpretentious salon exemplifies down to earth hipness. All the stylists are incredibly talented and make excellent recommendations pertaining to cut, color and products that allow their clientele to maintain their chosen style after they walk out of the salon. As a faithful Stephen follower for years, I can attest to the fact that as a client, I receive consistently beautiful haircuts and color everytime I sit down in his chair and always walk out feeling like a million bucks without the million dollar price tag. I'm moving to Chicago and will continue to come here get my hair done. It's just that worth it.

This salon is a small gem that is placed in the back of a beautiful store. Stepping into this delightful salon, you should never have a fear that you will be leaving unhappy. The stylings of Lee put you at ease. Just watching his fingers move around your head is an art just in itself. His peaceful demeanor, British wit, charm, and concentration let you know that you are in the works with a pro. Jojo, "The Color and Cut Queen", gives your hair its undivided attention. Her style and her attention to detail is remarkable. Jojo is always up for a challenge and loves to be creative. I have put this poor girl through the ringer going from black to blond to brown and my hair is as healthy as can be and beautiful! This stylist is a triple threat to the beauty industry with her amazing make-up skills as well. Watching Steven cut hair is remarkable. I have never seen a more straight line being cut. He is steady, brilliantly creative, and really has a passion for what he does. If you don't know who to have cut your hair, worry not that any of artisans will let you walk out looking anything less than beautiful.
This salon has the greatest stylists in the city, or anywhere for that matter. From their presentation to their ability to do great hair, you can't go wrong, honestly. It is a fun environment, there is no pressure, there are no horrible front desk people that glare at you like just crawled out of a dumpster, and they just know automatically what to do with your hair. I have never been more pleased and I have never actually just wanted to go to a salon to just sit and watch artistic hands at work. This place is a genuine work of art.

Amazing amazing amazing. There are so many "hair stylists" or "hair designers" in Philadelphia, but no one I would call an artist. These people are artists. Doesn't matter which chair you sit in you, you will leave happy and confident that you are in good hands.

Lee actually listens to you and to what hair style you want and works on your hair all the while he's concentrating on how to make your hair look its best. Best of all, he can be disarmingly quiet as he does this, giving the impression that you are having your hair done by someone who cares about the quality of his work. He doesn't intrude into your emotional space with warmed-over opinions or clichees that pass for an attempt at making a superficially deep enough connection so that you will think he is "personable". He's just concerned about getting your hair right. This doesn't mean he isn't a "nice" guy. He genuinely is, he just doesn't have to prove it to you. I detect an underlying note of ambition in his character as well as resolve and for those reasons expect his new salon will do well. Why not? He's talented and doesn't miss a trick! I'd very much like that his new venture remains a secret for a while longer so that it doesn't become a garganuan scheduling effort to get an appointment with him. But I suspect that won't be the case.
