I had nine reservations, $355 worth, for the October 2nd Clipper City sunset sail worth over $350. But minutes before passengers were to start boarding the boat, they suddenly cancelled the trip, apparently due to administrative

If your idea of a "brunch cruise around the harbor" is being packed like sardines onto a schooner and waiting 20 minutes for a crewhand to bring you a drink because the boat is so crowded there is literally no room to move without elbowing

Extremely dissappointed in this company. I am from Seattle, I went to New York for my first time last weekend, (great timing- through hurricaine Irene). I had booked a sail through Manhattan by Sail for my boyfriend and I two weeks in

I decided to be unique and change up hanging around our amazing city! My friends and I sailed around the Statue of Liberty! Amazing boat, fantastic cocktails and breathtaking skyline! I am going back for July 4th and counting the minutes! Thank you for a fantastic experience and I can't wait to cruise again with the fireworks bursting above me!

Gosh, I knew I deserved such a unique chill out experience after the commencement, but still! I did not expect it to be thaaaaaaaat impressive and pleasant ! Great sailing experience. The views on the Manhattan skyline are breath-taking (not to mention those on the Statue of Liberty), staff is gorgeous, drinks are free... Well, can't wait sail with them again (I just need to find another excuse now that school is over...)

My husband and I took a sunset sail on the Shearwater as part of his birthday celebration, and we had a wonderful time on board. The crew was fantastic; we felt like we received the same exceptional service you?d expect from a five-star hotel. The boat is beautifully-crafted, and we had a great time just exploring the boat itself. The views of the city are amazing, especially at that hour. Also, maybe we just got lucky, but we found ourselves surrounded by a great crowd. Overall, it was a very classy experience that we?d be thrilled to repeat.

I don't understand the negative comments that have been posted about Shearwater. I have been a bunch of times now and yes Shearwater is a little more expensive than the Adirondack, but it is such a nicer boat and a real authentic experience. The boat is from 1929 and is a historic national landmark, the deck is original and you sit around very casually and people walk around and socialize - crew is cool, new yorkers, artists, actors enjoying themselves. It is a real, beautiful classic boat - with a soul!! Not a boat ride...

I bet those comments are from someone who works for Adirondack? Methinks they doth protest too much!!!

Check both boats out for yourself and then come back and write a review...

Pros: coolest thing to do in NYC

Cons: not everybody can sit on a bench, exposed to the outdoors. bring a hat and extra layer

i was so looking forward to sailing with shearwater. the website looked beautiful and in theory it sounded like a great idea. i booked a sail with them to celebrate my one year wedding anniversary. it was my surprise to my husband.

THREE HOURS before departure, they called to tell me the sail was cancelled because not enough other people signed up for it! three hours. i had no warning - no heads up whatsoever - so i could not plan anything else. the manager offered only bad, non-options: a refund (unhelpful the night of your wedding anniversary), to reschedule (the date sort of mattered), or purchasing the remaining tickets myself (8 of them - so this was really a non-option).

i explained the situation - yet, this was the "best" they could do for me. i was absolutely crushed. i had planned for this. i had not planned to cry on my one year wedding anniversary. if the sail had been cancelled due to weather, i could have understood that. this, on the other hand, was a choice made by management. it was in their power to do the right thing, yet they chose not to. so i was left without anything for my husband on our first wedding anniversary. he understood, but i still felt terrible.

do not use this company. this was entirely unprofessional. i cannot believe they run a business this way.

I booked the Shearwater for a celebration and invited several ppl. We have been sailing several times on the Adorondack Schooner and have always been thrilled. However, she was booked so we took a chance on the Shearwater.
First of all, they charge the same price as the Adorandack $50. for the sunset sail but only offer one drink per person where as the Addorodack basically has an open bar. Once on board, you are offered to pay alacarte or purchase an open bar at $20pp but they are so disorganized that you are lucky to be offered any drinks.
The other issue is that there are not enough seats for everyone. Only fourteen in all so plan on some of your guests having to stand.
Most importantly, the sail itself was disappointing. At one point we just sat in the middle of the hudson for about an hour not looking at anything in particular. They sailed by the Statue of Liberty but did not come very close to it which is a shame because she is quite breathtaking up close. All in all the competition (the Adorondack) is one hundred times better in every way.

This has to be the best thing I've ever done in NY. Even though I've been to "the City" at least 20 times, my trip this summer was the best yet. I was downtown walking along the esplanade in Battery Park City waiting for an outdoor concert to start when my girlfriend saw people getting checked in on what looked like a private yacht. We went closer and saw that people were paying for tickets... Captain Chris (?) told us there was space available and we paid and jumped on & the Captain gave a quick intro to the bartender and we were underway...

I had no idea you could enjoy the city this way. It was a terrible heat wave & the air was muggy & stifling, but... as soon as we set sail and left the dock, there was this cool sea-breeze. It was like we were a million miles away - there were seagulls, fog horn blasts (the Captain said it was automatically activated from the humidity) but the city sky line, the statue, Ellis Island, it was really incredible.

They served refreshments - the beer was super cold and the crew & service staff was cute, friendly and informative. It was very low key, I got to "take the helm" and steer the boat (under supervision of course). I found out that Walt Disney and Rocky Marciano had been imprisoned on an island in the harbor that we passed during WWII -it was also the boat that I had seen on the Apprentice - a Gatsby era yacht that had been owned by some millionaire banker from the 1920's.

The cost was about $50 for a 2-hour sail. I just wish they'd had t-shirts I could of bought as a souvenir.

Just awesome!! I could not recommend anything more.

Pros: Super Friendly Staff, Views of the Statue of Liberty & Skyline

Cons: They ran out of my favorite rum, but had a decent replacement

I have never believed that something like this could happen .... the experience I had with this company/ service provider was terrible. They are just a big, huge rip off. Make sure you check how much they charge you. Everything with them is a barter. The prices are all subject to "the manager's" will and if there are changes that you might want to make to your initial reservation .... forget about refunds!!!! This is the worst experience I have ever had in New York....

We had an exceptionally special afternoon with memories we will really treasure forever.

Thank you so much, and thank you to all your crew, Matt and Jessica especially. It was an absolute delight.

3:00 PM - The clouds were gray and it was sprinkling. We decided to go ahead and sail anyway. Before long, it was pouring rain and very windy. We could not even go on deck!

3:30 PM - Jessica is great; she is basically feeding us beers by the twos! The rain slowed, and we decided to sit on deck. It was still brutally cold and windy; one of our guests didn't even want to be outside. Jessica brought us blankets that basically saved our lives, and we continued the adventure. The boat feels as though it's going to keel over. My friend is screaming!

4:00 PM - The sun is shining on us. Jessica brings out a cake and the champagne. It is gorgeous, and lovely, and we have a breathtaking view of downtown Manhattan. Everyone is happy and loving this sail.

5:00 PM - No one wants to get off. Matt practically had to ask us to get off the boat; we are so happy and want to go for round two.

6:00 PM - Back at home. We talk about how amazing the sail was. How it was actually better that it was horrible weather at first because it made it so much more memorable and adventurous. We feel like we experienced a "real" sail. Even though it seemed like it would be miserable at first, the fact that we stuck with it with good attitudes was so incredibly worth it.
