Loved this Place but a Little Pricey  5 Star Rating - World class

My husband and I were in Pittsburgh for the Inpex Inventor's Expo held June 11-14, 2008. This is absolutely the place to go to experience "the South Side" of Pittsburgh. I loved the ambiance of this place. The staff were terrific and the food was excellent.

Avoid Carson Street which is the nearby street with all the restaurants on the South Side and head to the 17th Street Cafe.

Loved it...but bring your credit card unless you have plenty of cash.

Good food, nice date spot 4 Star Rating - Very good

I took my girlfriend to the 17th street cafe on a satruday night around 9:30. Parking was difficult to find so we used the valet parking across the street ($5). We were promptly seated in the small backroom and were greated by the chef. We ordered drinks, which were tasty and reasonably priced.

We started the meal with the crab and artichoke dip, served with warm pita bread. This appetizer was delicious and very good. Both of our meals were accompanied with a salad and bread. The salad was spinach with carrots, onions, and garbonzo beans. We did not get any bread that came with our meals.but we didn't notice since we had eaten plenty of pita bread from our appetizer.

I ordered the Crispy Salmon, served on a slaw of onions, cherry tomatoes, and asparagus. A few drops of a tomatoe or pepper sauce was drizzled on the plate. The skin of the salmon was crispy as expected and the fish was cooked perfectly. The dish was plated very nicely. I thought the fish itself was a bit bland and plain tasting. However, the onions, tomatoes and asparagus adding nice flavoring when combined with the fish. I had a choice of 3 side dishes and choose the sour cream mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were good.

My girlfriend ordered the Scoglio, which is your choice of pasta served with clams, shrimp, and scallops in a white wine or red wine sauce. This was an excellent dish. I highly reccommend it in the white wine sauce. The sauce was perfectly balanced and did not overpower any of the seafood.

We had a very nice dinner at the 17th street cafe. The waiters and waitresses were very attentive and made sure that the salad was not served while we were eating our appetizer and also that our entrees were not served while we were eating our salads. We will visit again!

Great Food, good price! 4 Star Rating - Very good

We went here last weekend for my boyfriend's birthday. The only downfall was there were no reservations, but we sat at the bar and chatted with the friendly waitress who served us drinks. The food was amazing! Everyone was raving about their dish. I had scallops in a cream sauce and most of our party got veal (which everyone said was good). We had tiramisu for dessert which was also fantastic. The food was very good and not too expensive (about $22 a dinner), the atmosphere was nice, and the staff was very friendly. I already started recommending it to my friends!

Pros: Great food, decent price, nice atmosphere
Cons: Not sure if they have reservations, not a lot of seating

slow gift certificate delivery 2 Star Rating - Wouldn't recommend

After reading all of the raving reviews on this website I decided to purchase a gift certificate for my parents on their anniversary. While they reside in Pittsburgh, I live out-of-state (in NY), so I called the restaurant to purchase the gift certificate. I paid over the phone with my credit card, which was promptly charged. However my parents did not receive the gift certificate until 7 days later, a day AFTER their anniversary. I can't imagine why it took the restaurant so long to mail it. I figured that it would only take a day or two in the mail since it was a local mailing address . I even purposely held-off on buying the certificate so they wouldn't receive it too early...what a mistake. I was embarrassed on their anniversary when it appeared that I hadn't given them anything, but I'm still hoping that they'll enjoy their dinner. Overall, I think this may be a good restaurant for locals, but they don't seem to be able to accommodate special requests.

A wonderful dining experience! 5 Star Rating - World class

My husband and I went to this restaurant because we had a coupon. We couldn't believe we had never heard of or been to this fantastic little gem hidden away on 17th street. The atmosphere is intimate, romantic, and friendly. The people couldn't be nicer. The wine that was recommended was the best cabernet I have had in years. The food was as good if not better than the description of it. If you have never been to the 17th St Cafe, you have to go. It is a wonderful dining experience.

Pros: Atmosphere and food.
Cons: Can't have large groups.

This Restaurant Has it All! 5 Star Rating - World class

This restaurant has it all. The staff are friendly, knowledgable, and their service is excellent. The atmosphere has the flavor of a lovely Tuscan cafe - quiet, intimate and cozy. The food is consistently excellent. I have never had an average meal at this establishment. Their entree flavor combinations are interesting, exciting and ALWAYS delicious. The freshly made cappucinos are rich and flavorful, with the delicous after taste of chocolate and never bitter. The desserts are wonderful - BUT their best dish is the roasted red pepper bisque. It is absolutely superior to anything else I have sampled across the country! I highly recommend this restaurant and the soup is a must-have!
