WHAT MAKES ASHRAM A SPECIAL PLACE ARE THE INSTRUCTORS, THEY ALSO TAKE THE CLASSES THEMSELVES. THEY FOCUS ON BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT.

IT'S A GREAT COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHO LOVE YOGA, WE ALL ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER. IT'S A PLACE THAT YOU CAN JUST BE YOURSELF!!!! THE COOL THING IS YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE A YOGA BACKGROUND, YOU START WHEN YOU START, EVERYONE'S AT A DIFFERENT LEVEL AND THAT'S OK.

THERE'S NO SMELLY CARPETS, THE CHANGE ROOMS AND YOGA ROOMS ARE CLEANED DAILY AND WELL TAKEN CARE OF.

YOU CAN RENT A MAT, YOGI TOES AND TOWELS. THEY ALSO HAVE A LITTLE STORE TO PURCHASE MATS & YOGI TOES AND WATER.

THERE'S TONS OF PARKING

THEY OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS AND IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT THEY WILL WORK WITH YOU ON WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD!!!!

I have practiced at every studio on the eastside and many in Seattle. I feel the most at home and the most comfortable at the Ashram. The instructors are warm, friendly, energetic and they push you to your edge. The studio itself is beautiful. It is clean and the ventilation is incredible. The heat is at the perfect level to work you and to allow you to have the energy to have a strong practice. The power sequence of yoga offerred at the Ashram is siimilar to Bikrams but also uses Power Vinyasa flow. It is unlike anything I have tried anywhere else and it makes me feel so lean and strong. The energy produced at the Ashram is so amazing and I highly recommend it.

I've only been doing hot yoga for a few months, but I've quickly grown addicted to the way I feel after a class with these instructors, especially Gary. The focus is 100% on mind-body benefit. And the facility is unmatched in this area -- I can't imagine a better environment in which to develop.

I've tried other hot yoga places on my commute axis, but now I drive miles out of my way to practice at The Ashram. Jazz great Bill Evans once said, "too often we are satisfied with the approximation of excellence, rather than excellence itself." If you know what he meant, this place is for you.

We are very fortunate to have a studio and group of classy instructors like this here in Seattle. Facilities are outstanding, but more than that the instruction is top notch. I've been to all the other studios in the area and they "set the standard". I actually commute past another studio just to go here every day - 'nuff said.

I went through three east side yoga studios before I found The Ashram. My chief complaints about other studios were inconsistant room temperatures from instructor to instructor, lots of substitute instructors and poor heating systems/ventilation. This is not the case at The Ashram! STUDIO- The heat is very consistant across instructors (yay!). The heating system and flooring is superior to other studios. The flooring is made of some kind of rubber that just holds the heat to the floor. Rubber is more hygienic than carpet, which makes me happy. There is good air exchange in the room too so you don't feel like it's suffocating in there. There are lots of mirrors so you can watch your pose and make sure you got it right. INSTRUCTORS- I haven't had a bad experience yet. I've been to classes with 3 different instructors now and they are all good, strong people. They keep the temperature perfect for Bikram classes (I mean truly hot, not 95-100 degrees like I've experienced in some places) so you will stretch! Try a class with Gary sometime and you will be sold, he's got a way of saying the right thing to get you through the rough spots during class. You will get a good workout. CHANGING ROOM- It's nice and sometimes there are things in the women's one like hair elastics and feminine hygiene products. Totally not necessary but a really nice touch. The room has cubbies, benches, two showers and two bathroom stalls. You can't lock up your stuff so leave valuables at home. The room is larger than most of the other studios I've been in. RATES/CUSTOMER SERVICE- The rates are comparable for the area and they won't take you for "a ride" financially. For instance, I recently had to have knee surgery and expected to keep paying my monthly membership (even though I would not be attending classes) but they let me suspend my membership for a bit while I recover. Totally realistic, totally nice people. Hands down, 5 stars for a good studio, good instructors and good customer service.

The Ashram is like the Cheers of yoga, you know, the place where "everybody knows your name". You are made to feel welcome even at your very first class. And if you make it through your first class, it won't be long before you see amazing results. Gary (instructor) will tell you that everyone in your life benefits from you taking this yoga class and he is so right - you will become fit and strong and focused (you might even be able to balance on one leg!) and feel so much better about yourself that you will even be easier to live with. I have never stuck with any form of exercise very long (I have EADD - exercise attention deficit disorder) but I have been at yoga now for almost 2 years because I see RESULTS.

I too have practiced at other studios for many years and quickly realized that Gary understands, and is able to articulate the practice of yoga in a simple yet powerful teaching style. If you practice meditation, these classes will deepen mindfulness, concentration, and relaxation. The studio is wonderful and I doubt that there are any finer, however, it is the core teaching and practice that separate the Ashram from other studios. This is the real deal ? compare it to most other yoga schools and you will see the difference.

Pros: learning what yoga is and what it's not

I've been practicing yoga for over 10 years, moving from studio to studio, looking for that "something special". After one week at the Ashram I knew I?d found what I?d been looking for. I had 9 months remaining on a membership with another studio but never went back. The only diversity is in the students that come. The teaching is consistent, knowledgeable, aware and brilliantly orchestrated. The studio itself is terrific, well ventilated, well appointed, showers, ample parking and easy freeway access. Well done! (no pun intended).

like others,I too have been to several other yoga studios, and none compare to this school that Gary has developed. It is one thing that I can look forward to all day, and I have met some incredible people that I continue to see and enjoy on a daily basis. Gary, Susie and the type of dedicated students that this studio attracts are what have helped me make yoga such a big part of my life. If you are looking for an easy yoga class then this is probably not for you, but I highly recommend giving it a try!

Prior to coming to the Ashram, I really didn't think Yoga was for me as I preferred doing sports like running, biking, playing hockey, martial arts -- real high energy type things and my experience with Yoga was limited to a couple of classes I've taken here and there. I had some friends who were telling me that "You have to do yoga" and since the Ashram was close by I thought I'd give yoga another shot.

Fast forward 8 months and I go to yoga almost on a daily basis -- this will sound cliche but it's changed my life. I get a deep relaxation from doing yoga I didn't get from other sports, my flexibility is better which helps all of the other sports I do and my body just feel looser, better.

The facility is great, I wouldn't say the change rooms are as big as other people have written, but they do have a shower and enough room even for a full class. The yoga room is top notch, the heat comes through this rubberized floor (no gross carpet) and the ventilation works really well. The whole facility is very clean.

I've taken some friends who can make a comparison between other yoga places and this place and the Ashram is definitely one of the best. The style of yoga is athletic and healing and the environment is warm and friendly.

Even if you think "yoga isn't for me" you should check this place out, you'll be surprised.

Pros: Athletic Power yoga, bikrams, motivating teachers, excellent facility, lots of classes, friendly staff

Cons: occasional lineup for the shower

The Ashram which opened in April of '06 brings together both an fantastic studio envionrment and great instruction.

The facility offers all the amenities you could want including: soft flooring, great lighting, showers, large changing rooms.

But it is really the yoga that makes the ashram stand out. The quality of both students and teaching create an energy that is very condusive to excelling at yoga, whether you are a novice or veteran.

Prices for monthly and annual memberships are also very reasonable.

During the past couple of years I have been to about 30 different yoga studios in 5 different states, including some very well known studios in NY. In the greater Seattle area alone I have practiced in 14 different studios. Ashram is without a doubt the best I have experienced. Everything at the studio is brand new, and it has a state of the art heating and ventilation system, plus a special floor that retains heat which helps loosen the body. The locker rooms are enormous, and have showers. There is plenty of free parking, and access is great, right off of I-405. What really separates Ashram though is the staff. You will never find another instructor who cares about his students and motivates them as much as Gary does. Susie is the other primary instructor, she is very gifted also. I have had literally hundreds of instructors over the years, and at Ashram they are the absolute best. Having been intensely involved in athletics my entire life, I can honestly say that at age 50 I have never been in better shape. Gary's unique hot power vinyasa, coupled with Bikram, are the most complete and challenging workouts I've ever done. But the real benefit is not physical, rather it is mental. After class, with the prana circulating through your body, your mind is completely at ease, filled with contentment. A regular practice at Ashram will dramatically enhance your life, for the better. Just ask the person practicing next to you. Namaste.

I've been practicing yoga for about 6 years. Gary's yoga has transformed my body as well as my mind. My focus and strength have grown beyond my expectations. His teaching style and postures will change you after the first class. I have several friends that practice because they saw the change in me. Now, we are all regulars. Also, the studio is beautiful.

Message from Ashram Yoga

If you have decided to experience yoga, here is a list of items to guide you through some basic rules for a better yoga practice.

So please:

?Arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes before class.

?No late arrivals or early dismissals.

?Bring a mat, towel, and water bottle to practice yoga. If you do not have these items they are available for rent or purchase at the studio.

?If you rent a mat, after class, use the spray and cloth (available in the yoga room) to clean the mat; also roll it up and return it to the front desk.

?If you rent a towel, place the used towel in the bin.

?There are set times to drink water during your practice (it is for your benefit to stay with these set times); the instructor will advise you of those times.

?Make sure to be hydrated prior to coming to class; you should drink at least one liter of water during the day.

?Do not eat two hours prior to coming to class.

?The yoga room is heated from 90 to 105 degrees. This is done to relax your muscles and for other benefits.

?The ideal yoga clothing for women are well fitted shorts or pants and a well fitted top (short sleeves or sleeveless); for men is well fitted swimming trunks (remember that the room is heated; the well fitted recommendation is so you are able to see and do your poses more easily and for your comfort doing back and forward bends).

?There are showers in each changing rooms; keep your showers quick as there are other students in line.

?Remove your shoes prior to entering the yoga room.

?In case you forget your belongings at the studio (keeping in mind that we are not responsible for your items) we do have a lost and found; just inquire at the front desk.

?During your practice, if you feel lightheaded, nauseous or tired, lie down on your mat; do not leave the room as it will disturb your fellow yogis' focus (plus the instructor can keep an eye on you to ensure that you are okay).

?The yoga room is a place for you to also improve the mind and spirit so always keep silent and focus on your own practice during the class (understand that yoga is a non-competitive exercise).

?The yoga "asanas" (or poses) encompass not only movement of the body, but also proper breathing technique (in/out the nose unless notified and inhaling/exhaling at certain movements), and proper "drisht" (gazing point). The best way to understand and improve your practice is to follow exactly what the instructor describes during the class.

?It is also very important to follow the instructor's orientation to avoid injuries.

?Be patient and kind with yourself; you are, with every practice, building up your strength, flexibility and balance.

?Every day you practice yoga is different. You might be able to do a pose one day but the next day your body might reject that same pose; accept your body's limitation each day.

?Yoga is about quality, not quantity. Make 100% effort on all poses but again, pay attention to your body's needs.

?If you have injuries or a medical condition, inform the yoga instructor since he/she might recommend modifications for your poses.

?And finally, do not have expectations from your first time practicing yoga; come with a calm, positive and patient mindset. If your body is sore the following day the best thing to do is to come back to yoga as soon as possible (ideally the very next day) and as you start a consistent practice you will notice your body thanking you in several ways and you will be super-energized to be even more productive in your life!

You are now ready for class. Enjoy your new healthier and happier lifestyle with yoga.

More about Ashram Yoga

The Ashram Yoga features an innovative mix of instruction including: ?Bikram ?Kriya Meditation ?Power Vinyasa ?Deva Meditation The studio maintains the highest commitment to the highest quality of instruction, and the creation of an overall environment conducive to the practice of yoga. Gary's style of hot power yoga has generated a strong following in the Puget Sound area among students who are looking for a variety of benefits: ?Body & Mind Integration ?Mental Focus ?Spiritual Development ?Flexibility In addition to The Ashram's signature hot vinyasa yoga classes, The Ashram will also be offering a heavy rotation of Bikram style hot yoga classes taught by both Gary and other certified instructors. Gary's Power Yoga is an exciting, energizing and empowering sequence of yoga poses specifically designed to work the whole body and improve the mind and spirit. This type of hot vinyasana yoga promotes upper and lower body strength, balance and flexibility. Through this dynamic exercise students not only improve physically but also benefit from the strong mental/spiritual effects of the classes. Students regularly speak of their experience of being brought into the desired yogic state of "union with oneself" - one of profound relaxation with an open empty mind. Gary initially designed this unique set of postures as a class that he would like to take himself as a traditional hot yoga practitioner. It consists of a flowing sequence of postures that follows a natural, easy-to-learn structure. The structure of the yoga sequence drew not only from Gary's many years of yoga practice, but also from his diverse background in martial arts teaching (which brought, discipline and structure to the sequence), his meditation teaching (giving the sequence a focus on the mind and spirit) and even from being a musician (which instilled a sense of flow into the sequence). All of these factors impacted the choice and order of postures. Power yoga welcomes all body types, age groups, and expertise levels, and is well suited for classes of mixed levels. This makes it easy to structure schedule and maximize class attendance. Anyone with the right attitude (which basically means being kind and patient with yourself working through your sore or dormant muscles and aches with every practice) can practice this yoga. Gary's Hot Power Yoga is not quite as hot as Bikram's style of yoga, whose temperatures detract certain people. It also focuses more on strengthening the upper body and core stomach muscles, which is often desired by students. The two systems complement each other well and the Studio will not limit itself to Hot Power Yoga, but will offer a limited set of other yoga offerings tailored to the desires of the student body. The strong effect that the Hot Power Yoga classes have on their students can be seen after class as students leave appreciative and satisfied.
