Midtown Manhattan gets a new flavor in Indian cuisine with Mint. Owner Gary Sikka, who besides being a successful businessman, is a chef with 18 years of culinary experience has created an Indian restaurant that celebrates the food of the North and the South, and presents it in a way that today's dining public relates to. The 110 seat restaurant is decorated brightly with orange, red, and fuscia drum lights snuggled together throughout the long dining room, and painted panels of mint, yellow, and green that hang over striped banquettes. There is a semi-private room complete with audio video equipment that seats 12. The definition of mint is "an aromatic refreshing herb that serves as a central ingredient in accompaniment sauces in Indian cuisine." Gary Sikka is taking great pride in bringing NY an exemplary dining experience presented in a tranquil and exhilarating atmosphere.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Pools of color wash this Midtown restaurant in a contemporary Indian aura. Magenta and orange drum lamps cover the ceiling, and a mint green glow flushes the walls. The few traditional touches--woven placemats, pillowed banquets and tapestries--barely surface, but it's enough to even out the upbeat energy of streaming Bollywood pop.

The Food
The regional menu rests in limbo between tradition and the 21st century, with a transitional character that sometimes falters. Vegetable samosas arrive small, perfectly triangular and pleasantly light and airy. A distinct sauce covers mussels porial, the chili-packed southern starter deserving of its spicy title, though the bone-in goat rogan josh's masala is mild and not fully matured. While flavored rices and rosemary naan sound enticing, you'll be just as happy with the regular basmati and breads. Follow the same rule of thumb with desserts, where names like "exotic carrot illusion" do not pay off.

Key Points

  • Party Room Available

The Inside Scoop

  1. Where to Sit - Party of 10? Reserve the private back room, sealed off by a shimmery drape and concealing private audio-visual equipment. Party of one? Saddle up to the bar and order from their specialty martini and cocktail menu.
  2. What to Drink - An interesting selection of wine is offered at reasonable prices--from excellent bottles of Turley to satisfying bargain accompaniments like the $27 Domaine de Montvac Cotes du Rhone.

Thank you Citysearch!!!!

by nigop_sraight

After reading the reviews here at city search i decided to dine at mint with my girlfriend. The only mistake of da nite was that i didnt make a reservation. To my surprise this indian restaurant was packed on a tuesday night. After a lil while we were seated in the booth which i personally found very romantic (The corner booth gives you more privacy ;) HINT HINT). Me and my girl are wine freaks so we ordered a bottle of Shiraz which was just perfect. We couldnt decide on the apps so the server helped us order Lamb Chops and Lobster Masala which were cooked to perfection. For Main course we ordered Lamb Nilgiri, Chicken Tikka Masala and Yellow Spinach. i would give to food 9.9 outa 10 ( Even Lord krishna wouldnt get 10 outa 10 from me hehe). For dessert we ordered Chocolate cake and White rasp choc ice cream which was pretty good as well. I am definately going back to Mint thanks to City search.

No steam

by foodbum

The engine has broken down, the conductors are sleeping and the engineers have no clue!
Such poor food, service and detail that one wonders why they opened? Went again after 6 months to give a second try but should have stuck with my original opinion to visit the original trains. This one needs to be sent back to the shed.

Pros: if you like to waste money

Cons: too many to mention

WOW!!!

by stan_daman

i love this place. i have had to wait a few times, but it is so worth it. This is the kind of Indian food is hard to find and Americans used to your standard curry will not know what to order! Tell the staff what kind of things you enjoy and your eating habits (i.e. dairy/non-dairy) and they will make it to your liking. SO GOOD! This is one of the few things I will miss about eating in India! I can't say enough good things about it.

Pros: THE BEST FOD I'v EVER HAD, Service

This place will impress!

by himu_jani

As the old adage goes: You get what you pay for. And this place doesn't disappoint. Mint will impress even the most knit-picky food, with class to spare. The restaurant reflectes against the high level of service and excellent food, it is a value unmatched even by a fire-sale at Louie Vuitton... I have been there more than once, and either I make an impression (probably not) or the wait-staff have excellent recollection. The sushi is superb and the caviar is the best in the business! This place is a must...

A sure WINNER when it comes to food!!!

by j_charlz

The food is excellent. It is the best Indian restaurant I have been to outside India. Even my mother who just got here from India 3 days ago couldn't believe how good the food was. The service is also a perfect representation of Indian hospitality. I have take both Indian friends as well as those who have not had the luck to visit yet (and some who do not eat spicy food). Everyone loved it. The staff was very accomadating to cater to everyones needs. It got really busy ... this place needs reservations.

Best gourmet Indian food - ever.

by mcneill

Impeccable service. The food was exquisite. Try the lobster, really incredible perfectly done, and with the Indian wine on the menu, a true escape for the palate. Almost too much for one. Mint is truly one of the best Indian culinary experiences Ive had in the city in a long time. Outstanding.

Never again!

by henry_10023

I had high expectations due to the overwhelmingly positive responses posted here but sadly, I was very disappointed. First they gave me an appetizer menu. After we ordered from it. We were then given a main menu which included some different appetizers (makes no sense). The cauliflower tasted like it was sautéed in ketchup. Another vegi-dish that we received was not salted enough. The rice was dry (how do you screw up rice?) The staff was at first overly attentive and then non-existent. We had great difficulty in getting additional sauces to try to perk up the food. The place was nicely designed but with the flavor-less dishes and a staff that seemed quite inexperienced, it lacked any kind of substance. This restaurant is definitely an example of a place which lives off of a reputation that is undeserved. You can do much better for a lot less money.

Pros: Nice ambiance

Cons: The food and service

MY FAVORITE

by eddk121

MINT is one of the best places to go in Midtown. The service is incredible and the owner really makes you feel like he appreciates your business. An incredible collection of bottles of wine that will fit all budgets. Chef Garry is AMAZING!!! Try the Lamb Chops, Lamb Nilgiri and Chicken Tikka Masala. You can not go wrong with anything on the menu...all served tapas le. If you are not in the mood for wine, the bartender can make some great speciality drinks. Great afterwork spot!

The best restaurant i have ever been to!!!

by a_rose

I must say i have been to many restaurants in manhattan.. Mint by far is the best restaurant I have ever been to!! I brought my 72 year old italian father in law whom is very stubborn and closed minded about trying different foods other than italian cuisine and he left this place with a smile from ear to ear!! Not only did we love the food but the ambience is fantastic.....In all we had a great experience!

DEFFINATELY COMING BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Food, Great Service

by sakhi89

For my 2nd Anniversary my boyfriend surprised me with a Broadway Show and Dinner at Mint. He saw how highly the restaurant was rated on CitySearch and made reservations. We were not disappointed. We were seated promptly and served our drinks quickly. In fact our waiter made the drink recommendations as well as food recommendations. He was right on. The food and service was excellent. The ambiance was so romantic. Candles lit the room and made a great mood. I would go again to Mint in a second.

I've been going to this place for almost 9 months now. It is sooo good. I'm afraid to tell its best kept secret because then the word will get out and I'll never get a reservation... there is a private room in the back where you can sit , with decor and authentic garb. There are candles, and a water fountain which make this spot very romantic!!!

Pros: Inexpensive, Excellent Food, Great Service

Wonderful Lunch

by vyper334

My husband and I along with another couple had lunch here recently. We started out with the Mint Chicken Kabab. It was fabulous. For entrees, we shared the Lamb Malabaar and the Tandoori Wild Salmon which were extraordinary as well. Our server was pleasant and attentive. All over it was a pleasant experience and for a fair price. If I'm back in Manhattan, I would like to try it for brunch.

Absolutely FABULOUS

by gioia100

Found this place on CitySearch. I hosted a group of friends here, first time visit for all of us to MINT. People, it was AMAZING. A lovely interior, attentive wait staff. Authentic Indian food served with flair. The food was delicious. Actually, it was one of the best I've tried in years. This sentiment was also shared with all the members of my party, some from India itself! The portions and price are very good. They even made something that wasn't on the menu! Wine list is great--we tried an bottle of white from India which was superb. Can't rave enough. Highly recommend this place.

I have been here many times with important business guests. The food and service was excellent. I specially liked Malai Chicken and Lamb Seekh Kaabab. The atmosphere was cosy and different. I have been to many other Indian Restaurents but the quality and presentation was totally differnt and excellent. The only problem is to go with reservation as once I had to wait for 35 minutes. The Owner Mr Sikka is very hospital. Keep it up

Pros: good food and service, ambience

Cons: parking as usual in Manhattan

by dan_san

The best nite out that could have happened to me and my girl friend was here at MINT.. I had no reservations cause of which i had to wait for about 15 mins.. but was well worth it...

The food was extra ordinary, different that those other wierd Indian restaraunts i have been to, specially cause of the fact that my girl friend is Indian. I was amazed by the wine list they had. Our server was friendly and helpful and helped us order adiquate amount of food. It was certainly the best night i have had in midtown.

To add a cherry on top, while leaving the restaurant we met P.Diddy and Usher. IT was the first time i had actually encountered a celeb right in front of me.

Thanks for the excellent night out and the lime light ..

Will definately see me again.

Pros: Food, Celebs ;), Wine & Liqour List

Had a wonderful Friday night dinner here with a group of five. After a short wait at the bar (which was very crowded), we were seated at a private table. The waiter was friendly, funny, and helpful. The food was perfect, and the side dishes were wonderful. It was fair priced, but and well worth it for a nice night out. I will definitely return!

WHAT A PITY!

by laurarider

We went there for dinner on a saturday night and to my suprise the place was totally empty. After reading all these reviews on citysearch, we thought it would have been packed. But maybe they were having a slow night, it began with such delay in getting the menu's, it just didnt feel like anybody really cared about us over there, which was actually very shockiing, they should've been very attentive and warm, so that we leave happy. anyway, then the food came out after almost an hour, we were being very patient, we had the standard chicken tikka masala, but even the food failed to impress us, it was like bland chicken chunks thrown in heated tomato ketchup. I think the tv dinner was a much better, cheaper choice for us. Not recommended what so ever.

Pros: -

Cons: plentyful

Good deal for a good meal

by greg_fi

While this restaurant has been much advertised with fanfare, I decided to check it out for real along with a client of mine. We were promptly seated, service was good, staff was friendly and food was excellent. They do have the courtesy to ask you how hot or spicy you want your meal to be, which helps as I'm not too familiar with Indian cuisine. Really no complaints on this one, though Im surprised how the previous reviewer had the patience or time to wait over 2 hours for his food. He must have plenty of time at hand!!!

Pros: food, service, decor

Cons: nothing really

The ambiance, food and service were all great

by mike_sh

My girlfriend dragged me here last Saturday for our "date night." It was very busy when we got there but the host had us sat after a 10 minute wait. We ordered a mojito and a mango martini and they were delicious. For appetizers we ordered Chicken Samosas and Lasooni Gobi and for main course we ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Pasanda and Saag Paneer they were all just scrumptious. The place was jammed but our server was prompt and friendly. The music selection was great, so we blew off desert and had another round of drinks at the bar. All in all, this place is fantastic and we plan to go back, but I would suggest do make a reservation before going.

Pros: Thumbs up!! to Garry for creating this wonderful place.

Cons: Could n't find any.

Worst service I have ever seen

by bishop1971

Never had such terrible service in Manhattan. We waited half an hour just to get menus, and watched another table of 10 people leave because they had been ignored by the (single) waiter. We got appetizers after 50 minutes. They forgot my drink order. Our table got our entrees after an hour and forty minutes, and they forgot my order. The waiter didn't even bother to come over and apologize. Flee this place.

Pros: none

Cons: atrocious service

This is such a gem amongst Indian Restaurants with great decor, ambience much like the W Hotel in Times Sq or a upscale South Beach establishment. The service was prompt a very unusual trait for Indian restaurants, the menu was extensive and the food was also great since i have been to every indian Restaurant from London, NYC, L.A and San Francisco. I would recomend this to anyone who appreciates Indian cuisine.

Last night, I treated my parents to dinner at Mint for their anniversary. My mom, who loves Indian cuisine, said that the entres at Mint were probably the best she had tasted. No doubt, the tandoor lamb chops grilled to perfection were the best we had ever tasted. Service was prompt, had to wait a few minutes to be seated as the place was busy. The waiter was very friendly and helpful in providing details about some of the exoctic dishes. Soothing ambiance and ample wine list. Overall, amazing dining experience. My parents were thrilled.

A Review You Can Actually Trust

by sushi_search

Listen up. I've been to all the best Indian restaurants on both coasts, London and of course India. I've also been to a few hole in the wall joints that were quite good too. So I do not say the following lightly, I think Mint is highly over-rated. The poultry and seafood were not very fresh and were paired with your typical uninspired/bland sauces. Prices are on the high side, service was ok. On a positive note the decor is unique as far as Indian establishments go, though I do not really care to eat in basements as the views are non existent and a stuffy atmosphere pervades. With so many other choices around you can safely skip this one with no regrets.

As a side note I would like to say that CitySearch seems to offer it's readers a more honest review experience than sites such as Menupages which I have personally noticed, heavily edit and thereby distort reviews.

Incredible!!

by adame13

I have traveled extensively across the US and tried many upscale Indian restaurants as well as small family diners. Until recently, I thought that the best Indian food I had was up in Vancouver, but Mint quickly proved that notion wrong. I tried some of the appetizers. The food was incredible! You could taste the fresh ingredients used in each dish, as well as the spice level was perfect. Although, I might have preferred a bit less spicy, although it didn't seem to interfere with the taste.

Must try for the Indian cuisine lover

by sampit

I have tried many Indian Restaurants, but this one stands out. Very distinct flavor and very distinct recipes than usually found for Indian cuisines. We tried the Lamb Nilgiri and Saffron Shrimp, and must say I would go back any day. Prices comparitive to what you expect to find in Manhattan, but you get what you pay for. Well stocked bar too, but we didn't try that. Ambience is what the restaurant advertises, and it does meet expectations. Overall experience very satisfying.

Cons: Parking, None

You could get the same food for $6-10 a dish in so many other places. At this place you are paying for the ambience, not the quality of the food. Having said that the layout and design of the place is really not all that special.

A Birthday that i'l always remember

by jsnizer

I dont generally review restaurants and I have created this account just to do so for the New Trendy restaurant i got my birthday surprise at. About 18 other friends of mine took me out a day after my birthday for drinks at Mint. What i didnt know was that this was all pre-planned. The Staff and my friend David had a huge cake ready for me in the private room. This was the best birthday i had ever had since i moved to NY. The restaurant has a really nice Ambience, the service was great, our server Vikram took good care of us and the food was extra ordinary. The Chef and owner Mr Gary was there to make sure my birthday was a success. Thanks to the Mint straff and management. I cant thank you enough but returning you a favor with this review.

I really didnt want to go to a Indian restaurant but my buddy insisted so i did. I could notice the restaurant from a block away with the bring green light outside the restaurant. The restaurant is pretty well made which made a great atmosphere for dining. The service, food, music everything was perfect. Writing another review since I go alot

by mzx380

I've been going to this restaurant for a few years. Last night I had went with my folks because I'd been raving about it so long. Every time I go here, I'm impressed because as far as Indian restaurants go, it is very impressive looking. Beautiful decor, friendly staff and a cute hostess. The service gets better each time I go there and the food is nothing short of spectacular. I have yet to have a bad meal there and recommend this place to anyone. In addition, because we only eat halal food, the owner made special concessions for us (which really impressed us) and told us that when we come next time, we should phone ahead so they can make even more preparations for us. A spectacular restaurant that applies new recipes to tried and true dishes.
It can get pricey when compared to other restaurants (most indian food is pretty inexpensive) but it's cheaper than a lot of other manhattan restaurants and most def. worth it if you like indian food (their seafood and naan in particular)

I think we have found our new family restaurant
