the food was not worth the price. You are better off going to a regular pizzeria. the prices were outrageous for the amount of food you got. Drinks were even worse. the restrooms were disgusting. port authority's restrooms are cleaner. the service was horrendous! I would never go there again, and would never recommend it TO anyone.

Tonda serves excellent food for very reasonable price! Their pizza cooked with brick oven is fresh, crispy and healthy. Wines are good too and it is cheaper if you go there on their happy hours. They also started live jazz performance every Tuesdays, and it is good place to hang. You must check out this place!

okay, so they have more than that--but I love this place if i need to relax with a bottle of wine and some nice cheeses. It is a little crazy on a Saturday night, I would recommend going early or on a weekday.

I will always remember this place as one of my most enjoyable dining "experiences" I've had in this city. I say experience because the food, service and ambiance were all perfect. I wouldn't have changed one thing about it.

However, I do know things are hard to recreate and wouldn't expect the exact perfection when I go back, but only time will tell.

Took my girlfriend here for weekend brunch....what a let down. We took our table and then waited 15mins before anybody actually came to take our order...then another ten mins before we had any iced water/bread.....we had to ask three times for both. The food arrived and to say I was disappointed was an understatement....I had their version of a british cooked breakfast which to be honest I wouldn't feed to a dog....it was that bad. At this stage I'd had enough and just wanted to get out of there but then came the tab which for the food was a complete joke. And yes we had to wait 10mins for that arrive as well. NY's full of great brunch spots so don't waste your time at this place.

This place is pretty good. I wasn't dissapointed in anything I got here. I thought the specials were good so perhaps you should stick with that. I don't think the food is particularly innovative.. so if you're looking for that, this is not the place for you. The food just tastes good.

Service is also pretty solid here.

My friends invited me to meet them for a meal here and I really enjoyed myself. The menu was diverse including unique meat, seafood & chicken dishes. I actually opted for a burger which was fantastic. The ambiance was very good as was the service. Oh yeah, nice beer list.

I absolutely love the setting and service but I have yet to have a good meal. I keep going back hoping that it was just a bad night but 3 out of 3 times my entrees was so oversalted that I couldn't eat it (Steak frites, veal stroganoff and fish and chips). I really liked the grilled scallops and once had the paella but found the seafood to be cooked right but the rice to be undercooked (still hard). On my 1st visit they noted that I was displeased with my dish and offered to replace it but I wasn't hungry anymore. Since the service was so great on my 1st visit and everyone raves about this place, I chalked it up to a bad night but I haven't had a good meal yet. I really want to like this place because I've always had a great time aside from the food.

I live in the neighborhood and love casual dining. But I've been in the biz for years and understand what you should receive for your money. For $150, two of us sat down to split 3 apps, and the lamb steak and 4 glasses of wine. Reasonable, but for the bill we could have picked haunts that are a little more classic. To cut to the chase, the place was dead (9:00 on a Thursday) and the waitress could care less. The first 3 plates came all at once, then we waited for almost 40 minutes for a mid-rare steak. No one checked on us, but the bus boys hovered to collect the plates (they needed something to do). Thirsty and hungry, a previous employee sits next to us and screams 50 feet into the open kitchen. Lots of convo with our waitress while our food was waiting. No one else working there seemed to notice. It's all in the details. For the money, there are 15 other places I would rather go where the service is better, atmosphere matches and food is better prepared. To give credit, the lamb steak was delicious, but I was so over the experience, it cancelled all redeeming qualities of the meal. Been an east villager for 6 years, but it seems the better scores are still in the West Village for this type of dining.

Went here a few weeks ago, walked in and was seated immediately. Good variety of European influenced dishes. My recollections of the pork special were that it was mouthwateringly juicy and outstanding. Service was good and nothing less than desired. My only pickle with the place was its level of noise, it was very, very loud; one almost had to shout to be heard. Popular and crowded late at night, good atmosphere if you like that scene.

I really liked The E.U.. mostly because the food selection was not the same old, same old you find everywhere else. Check out their menu at their website and you'll see. Also, they had a really nice beer selection which is always a plus. It was crwoded the night we went but it had a great vibe to it. The service was good as well. All in all, a very good time and it reminded me of one of the European restaurants while I was on a recent trip

We live in the neighborhood and finally decided to take a trip over here tonight. The service was great - the host, our waitress, and the runners were all very amiable. For appetizers we began with the tapas of fried bacalao and the jamon iberico which were delicious. The bacalao was dense, meaty and creamy. It was $8 for two tiny fritters but it was very tasty so we didn't mind. For the main course we ordered the Steak Onglet and the Porcetto (suckling pig). It took quite a while for our entrees to arrive and when they got there the food was COLD. And really, I am just not okay with that. The flavors were sort of there but the meals were just terribly executed. A suckling pig cooked the right way should have golden crisp skin, super moist and tender meat after having been basted in that layer of fat lies beneath the skin. The meat was on the dry side, the skin almost glowing fluorescent in its unappetizing pallor and all you got was chewy - cold chewy skin, cold chewy meat, and cold chewy fat. Then to top it all off as I finished my last bit of wine I choked on about a 1/2 Tbsp. of sediment that was lying at the bottom of the glass. I gave it a shot but it The E.U. just didn't do it for me. It seemed promising but maybe I came on an off night. I hope your experience is a lot better than mine.

I turned up at The EU last night with 3 guests from out of town, having made a reservation a week ago. When I checked in with the host/maitre'd they informed my they'd tried to call and having received no answer, just cancelled my reservation. I had no call, no voicemail message and having booked through OpenTable, no cancellation notice. (To add insult to injury, I just got a 'no-show' notice from OpenTable).

The English guy seating people told me it would be about half and hour wait for a table - there was no room to wait at the bar and several other customers were becoming annoyed at having to wait over 30 minutes for their (reserved) tables. Overall, he couldn't care less that we were inconvenienced.

Couldn't tell you what the food was like! Don't need that kind of attitude from any idiot restaurant in NYC.

I went here with one of my best friends on a weekday night and was very pleased with my decision. The service was amazing, we had barely finished ou flight of beer before our entrees arrived and our waitress was always nearby to help us when needed. The beer and food selection is great, as the restaurant offers a variety of tapas with various European flavorings. My friend had the hake and I had the short ribs, both I highly recommend. Overall, a very warm and comfortable place with a variety of tapas and entrees for everyone, great beer selection, and fast and friendly service.

the food was really inventive and excellent. a little pricy, but it's worth it. the waitress and bartender were great, but the hosts sucked. we got there a early for our 9:30pm friday night reservation, and though there were open tables, they asked us to wait at the bar. i checked in again a few minutes before 9:30, and had to wait for one of the hosts to come out of the kitchen to speak to me, though they clearly saw me standing there. then they said that they would come get us at the bar at 9:30, though there were still plenty of open tables. at 9:48, my fiance went over to them, and they finally sat us. the food made up for it, and i would go again, but next time i won't take any attitude from the hosts.

i've been walking past this restaurant for the last few years and was always intrigued by it. the decor is eclectic and interesting, so much thought has gone into the design. i only wish i could say the same about the food.

i went with high hopes and was severely disappointed. me and the wife ordered the fry-up for brunch. the food came out of the kitchen about 2 minutes after we ordered, so fast in fact that my wife said to the waiter "you must have the wrong table" but no, unfortunately they had the right table.

the food was put down and the fried eggs were cold, as my wife so eloquently remarked "how can anybody mess up eggs?" the beans on my plate were also stone cold ? i sent the plates back (something i have never done in a restaurant).

the same plates came back from the kitchen in about 2 minutes. we called the waitress and asked for the dishes to be cooked from scratch. they came out about 2 minutes later, the difference this time was that the eggs were congealed.

we were so hungry there was no point flogging a dead horse so we just ate and left as quick as we could. i have lived in nyc for 20 years, this has to be the worst food i have ever had.

they must be pre-plating, it was worse than cafeteria food. soooooo disappointing.

Went to the EU today around 3:30pm for late brunch, and all I can say is GO EARLY. Went to order and they were out of pastries, no espresso, no french toast... Ending up ordering the "fry-up" and the belgian waffle (seemed like safer choices), and was still disappointed... waffle came 15 mins late (after everyone else's food), and apparently they ran out of raspberry jam too. Fry-up was good but was missing beans, and sausage was overcooked. Gotta say, based on reviews I would've thought more of this place, and was severely disappointed. And to top it all off, they charged us for french toast, which they didn't even have. Perhaps just a one-off bad occurrence, but really disappointed

I have come to the E.U about 4 or 5 times now. I have always had a good time. the bartenders are so nice and even let me taste the beer before ordering. I love the Pome and it is really hard to find on tap. The gnocci with crab meat is wonderful so is the steak/meat dish---at the moment i cant remember what it is called. I went here with a party of 6 last time and we were treated really well and had a great time. The wine selection is also very good and we probably ordered 3 or 4 for the table. I will def be back and would definitely reccommend this place for dinner or lunch

My 3rd or 4th visit to EU, and each time, the service has worsened. Waited quite a while for the appetizers to arrive. Last night, no one refilling waters, no one clearing plates, couldn't find anyone to bring more bread and throughout the meal our waitress was nowhere to be found. They just don't have their act together as seen when on 2 separate occasions, they brought over a dish that was intended for another table.
I would term the service as 'inexperienced' and poorly managed.
The food was a 7...decent , but not worth the experience as a whole. ...moving on.

Let me just start off by saying that some of the reviewers before have been wrong about the wait staff. The night I was there, the service was amazing. The waiter we had was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and what wine would go best with which dish. The restaurant was very clean which is unusual for some of the places in the east village, and the the wine list was amazing. My friends and I had a great time. The menu offered something for all the members of my party. I will surly be making a repeat visit to The EU.

We had the white asparagus w/caviar, sweetbreads (excellent), a fish, and a gnocchi. The food itself was pretty good, and so was the wine list. The problem was the service. I asked for a glass of red wine. Our server (avoid the guy w/brown curly hair and the glasses) tried to push a bottle onto me 4 times. I finally told him no, I would still only like a glass. He then turned to my friend who asked for a glass of white wine. He said he would bring one out - which turned out to not only be the most expensive one on the list, but when we got the bill it turned out he had gone ahead and ordered a bottle after we had both clearly stated we simply wanted one glass each. We asked to speak to the manager, who not only spun it as though it was our fault, he also graciously said he would understand if we decided not to tip. I couldn't believe it. The food was good enough that I would've been willing to go back, but the service was worse than mcDonalds. They need to send their staff to Miss Manners.

So - I had called ahead to EU to find out if they had soft shell crabs. Oh happy day. Yes, they did. We snagged a table at a respectable 9 pm, but by the time we had ordered we were out of luck.... all out of crabs. I then ordered a club soda with a twist of lime -- sorry, I was told, out of limes. Then I ordered scallops with kind of a tripe sauce, and 40 minutes later I was informed that said sauce was no longer and could the chef please plate the scallops differently. My stomach grumbled a grudging, "yes." A cheese plate followed and my dear St Marcellin, of course, had long taken off for other diners' plates. No crabs, no limes, no 'special sauce,' no fancy cheese. I beseech the kitchen of EU: Have you heard of the Whole Foods on 1st and Houston ? They have all these things and they are open late !

I would never say such a thing w/o providing a few details: A few friends and I came to the restaurant for my birthday on a crowded Saturday night (we made reservations mind you). After waiting 45 minutes w/ a less-than-pleasant hostess, the manager was kind enough to get champagne for us to ease the pain. Upon sitting down my friend and I were sprayed with water by a not-so-sure handed waiter. He promptly apologized, an- oh! wait! Just kidding, he didn't, he just turned around and walked away. For an encore, 25 minutes later the waiter serves wine to the table behind us and spills it on me. This time, we got an apology at least. Unfortunately, it came from the occupants of the table, not a member of the wait staff, who instead offered the following consolation: "Well it's white wine so it probably shouldn't stain." Dessert is served on top of an uncleared table. To our delight, it was excellent. In an effort to make up for the service, the manager offered to comp it, but apparently forgot to post the waiter, who brought the extra dishes, and charged us for them. Finally, after giving an average tip, adjusted for the service (or lack thereof) the waiter has the audacity to walk outside and ask for more gratuity. Clearly the wait staff needs some training and its a shame that they bring down the pleasant atmosphere and delicious food created by chef Akhtar Nawab. If you don't mind inexperienced and rude waiters, or, if you want to go on an easy weeknight then i would recommend the restaurant. If you really want to try the restaurant just go to the bar and get appetizers.

My wife and I have been to EU couple of times, including when they first open without the wine license. The food was definitely better the first time with a appetizer of cured duck and a layer of rich duck egg yoke on it. On return, I had a german sausage that was pedetrial as best as well as a not too convincing pretzel. The staff were friendly and we enjoyed our evening. The but part is that I read other reviews here and tallied that of the 26 reviewers, 12 highly recommended, 1 recommended, 9 average, 1 below average, and 3 Not recommended, asumming that each has a average score from the city search scale, that would put the rating here to be about around 6.7. How does it get a 9.6 rating? Has CitySearch messed with all users reviews?

We weren't sure what to expect after the long saga this restaurant has undergone since opening, but we loved this place. First and foremost, the food was great. The portions were not enormous, but they were typical of this kind of restaurant, I thought. I had the chicken and dumplings, which was amazing, and my boyfriend had the sea bass, which was good too. For dessert the sticky toffee pudding was delicious. Our server was really nice and incredibly helpful as well. My only complaint is that the tables are a bit cramped, and when we first got in, the hostess tried to put us right next to another group even though the place was empty (we ate on the early side). But she was gracious when we asked to move. Overall, I loved this place--we had a really great experience there.

My fiance and I went to The E.U. recently and had a wonderful dinner, we started with about 4 different items from the many styles of appetizers you can choose from. I had the chicken and dumplings and she had a fantastic English Burger. Great wine choices and fantastic beer on tap!!! We had visited The E.U. when it first opened under another chef and it was good... the kitchen crew now ROCKS (so does the music).

Hostess forgot about my party and didn't seat us until 45 min after reservations (we arrived together). Service was sad: waitress seemed upset and stressed all the time, didn't bring us bread, didn't bring us bread after we asked. No, she wast not crazy busy either, had plenty of time to shoot-the-shit with other servers. Portions were really funny: the $15 meat plate had 2 slices of four meats, 4 olives, and 2 tiny pieces of bread. Sounds ok for one or two but not four. Main courses were small too. Top it of with a $250 bill to make a really lame experience. Plenty of better places to eat in the area. EU stands for EUblows.

The food at EU is definetly worth the trip. Though you wont find that your dollar goes very far here. There was no saurkraut on the menu, nor any grah (bean stew), so I can't say there is much representation of the Austria-Hungario empire, my personal fave. Serving "excellent" fish and chips will not impress me, but the fresh scallops and pork sure did. One could, however, just save the cash and buy a ticket straight to Dalmatia.

I'm a 5-7, 150# guy so I am not a big eater, but I was almost appalled at how small the portions were in this place. Yes, everything we had was right on the money in terms of flavor and tase. There were three of us so we ordered 3 appetizers: octopus, meatballs and an assortment of chesses. We were given 4 tiny meatballs the size of a gumball, 6 tiny pieces of chesses, and the octopus was divided up so we could get 3 small samples each.

If the main course had been adequate, I could have lived with the smallish appetizers, but it was even worse. I had braised veil with potatoes and I got 3 small pieces of veil with three tiny pieces of potato. It took me 5 minutes to finish.

I have been to dozens of restaurants in the east village, and this was a big disappointment, especially since we bought 2 bottles of wine at over 100 dollars. We expected more food to go with our wine.

I've been following the saga of the E.U. for a while now and finally got of my but and went around the corner to meet a few friends for dinner there. The food was really good and cheaper than Max where I go alot. Nice to know I have another place to get some great food in the neighborhood. Definately will be going back soon especially since their deserts are way better than max's.

Went to THE E.U. last saturday. Had a 8:30 reservation but had to wait forty five minutes for our table. The service and more so the wine service was horrendous. The manager refilled our dirty glasses with a new and different wine. Most of the food was inedible, from the quail with blood-orange to the small desserts. Someone should really let the chef know that salt is good on food. The room is loud and the the staff has a to cool for you vibe about them. Funny thing is I was with a restaurant critic and he was apalled by the place. I Will never go back, until the place turns into a different restaurant which I am betting it will by next fall.

First of all, I have to say that this by far one of the most beautiful restaurants I've ever been to. My boyfriend took me here for brunch last week and I was absolutely blown away by the design & decor: the combination of old-world classic rustic with modern, sleek and lovely---down to the details of meats and sausages hanging in the windows that absolutely flood the restaurant with light during brunch hours. I almost would have been satisfied with the visual aspect of the experience alone, but to my surprise the food quality + presentation really fit the atmosphere. Both my vegetarian self and my cannibal boyfriend were quite pleased with the menu options. For such a nice place, the service is extremely approachable and friendly. I have to say, as an East Village local, I'm constantly looking for good places to eat brunch and being dissapointed. This is one of the only places I've ever brunched in the East Village that has a good, sunny, friendly, easygoing environment coupled with delicious food.

This place is so beautifully decorated! It has these cute little chalkboard pictures, that I loved! Oh yeah, the food was pretty great, too. We had brunch there a couple of times, which was equally as nice as the dinners. What can I say, we had a good time there. ? no stress, just an easy, fun time.

My husband and i have been to the EU twice now and have had awesome experiences both times. I don't usually expect great service from busy east village places and was pleasantly surprised when our waiter greated us by saying "welcome back". The food was great, but we wish that the menu didn't change so drastically. We were hoping for similar food choices that we had the first time and were initially shocked to see such major changes. Our waiter (Benjamin) walked us through the menu and made some suggestions, then recommended a french wine we hadn't heard of (because the wine list, apparently, had changed drastically too?). I don't want to sound cheap, but we were hoping to spend like 30-40 and he suggested something around 50 and we went for it. THANK GOD! I just wish i could remember the name of the wine; it was delicious and paired perfectly with our meal. We also took our waiter's advice on the food too. Scrumptious. We finished everything with some cheese. By this point, we totally left our fate to our waiter and let him select them. Again, good choices. In short: good food, great service. We will definitely be back, and probably ask for Benjamin again.

The EU is a beautiful, genuinely classy restaurant with quite a bit of flair. Since I've been walking past it for months now (I live some 200 paces up on 4th Street), I have frequented the restaurant a nice handful of times; some just for a glass of wine (which is unusually good...not only are there an array of options but each one I've tried have been perfectly tannic or well-balanced with a slight fruity taste. Point in case: a wine exists for your particular taste). The food is decadent; the menu had to have been meticulously chosen. You will undoubtedly learn a few words in French or Italian that the waiter will happily decipher (the handsome one I had was eloquent and very helpful in our ordering). The "Fry-Up" at Brunch is not only a generous portion of food, but entirely tasty. Honestly, I could go on describing each course I have tried, but I will spare my memory and your time. Suffice to say, the ambiance actually does depict the quality of food at EU. I always leave effervescently energized.

Read the last review and have to agree The EU is definitely an amateur operation, all concept and no substance. Our server, who looked like he'd come straight to work from last nights party "explained" the menu to us (like I can't work out what a main course is), but when I asked him a question about a cheese he simply replied "I don't know". He didn't even bother to add on an "I'll find out".

My French friend noticed that the menu is full of spelling mistakes, it says a lot if you can't even spell the things you're serving. The contents of our main courses were both mismatched and blandly cooked.

Had to ask the Hostess for everything from water to the check as the floor staff were too busy with their conversation in a corner all night. In fact she was highlight of the evening, providing conversation instead of the usual attitude.

Quality of the wine is good, although expensively priced by the glass.

The EU doesn't seem to know what it's trying to be, but is way too overpriced for the quality of the food and the service.

Not only the food but the attention that the staff (Claudio in our case) is almost unreal! We were out celebrating my husband's birthday and Claudio picked up on it in our conversation and added a candle and "Happy Birthday" to our desert. They also sent across some complimentary champagne!

We read about this restaurants trouble and had to go and show our support and we were so happy we did!! Congratulations to E.U. The food is excellent, the service was outstanding and the restaurant itself is beautiful, to just go and look at the restaurant is worth the trip - but why just look when you can enjoy the food. We were 6 people 3 had the steak and everyone received their dish exactly how they orders (all different) tender and flavorful. I had the Skate and it was one of the best ways I have had this fish prepared to date. This is one dish you must order. The Cassoulet was very good as was the Schnitzle. I wasn't too happy with the garlic soup; too much paprika it overpowered the garlic. The Charcuterie Plate is great to share for the table. The flat beans and Brussels sprouts were excellent sides. The desserts were not the best I had; we tried the Chocolate Absinthe Cake and it was OK not really worth ordering and we had one of the specials Tiramisu Cream Puff that was very good. The service was outstanding, so nice to go someplace where the waitresses and waiters are hip, friendly and have knowledge of the food they are serving!!

The burger and fries and the fois gras appetizer. were my favorite dishes but we tried many other good things.

It is a really good place for a date or just a night out for a casual dinner with the girls or boys.

What a facade this reataurant puts up. The look is that of some of the nicest celebrity chef joints in the city. It has the feel of a posh hide out for the well to do. The music is hip. The lighting is chill. But that is where it ends. The service is lukewarm at best. The wine guy is a pompous know it all who doesn't really know how to smile and the food is better in text on the menu than on the plate. The East Village is not for this type of scene. We who live here and people that I know who like to come into alphabet city are not looking for overwhelming visual stimulation with overly descriptive menu items priced way too high and a waitstaff that seems to be fighting each other all night. We want cozy. Intimate. interactive. Don't prove yourselves to us just be yourself to us and we'll be back. I was not comfortable here. There is just something wrong about the place.

I consider myself a die hard restaurant groupie and I think I've finally found a new home at the E.U. My friend couldn't stop talking about how cool the place looked so I went and checked it out. I always get nervous when people say a restaurant is cool because I imagine a place full of hipsters. But it was anything but that. What it really was, was good down home euro-food, a friendly waitress, and some good german beer. There were people there but it didnt feel like a mob scene. In my opinion this is the New School of the way restaurants should be. Good food, friendly, and not expensive.

Pros: good lighting, food, beer

I am an E U regular and a self confessed foodie. I remember sitting at the communal table (not my favorite, but oh well) a couple weeks ago and having this displeasure of witnessing the debacle of this young womans birthday dinner. She and her four other Carrie Bradshaw wanna-be friends with blowdried hair and Jersey accents brayed like geese and disturbed every diner in vicinity with their up and down cigarette breaks and shouting at the poor waiter and very patient manager (who kindly offered to move us, which we declined.) I have worked as a waiter and I am sensitive to my environment and can only say that those kind of people have no place critiquing a dining experience on a serious website. I appreciate tremendously the great efforts of this wonderful neighbourhood restaurant and have never had an experience that was anything less than delightful (save unpleasent diners in vacinity) and I challenge any civilized person to contest such.
