Been here once and food was fresh and very tasty.
Love their lobster rolls because the ingredients are fresh and the roll is soft. I also ordered calamari and oyster, they are pretty good too.
Fresh delicious seafood with a spectacular

Wow! I wish I would have read reviews before going here. I too had the lobster roll and was very disappointed. I love lobster but mines had all of the taste cooked out of it. To get through the sandwich I requested any type of sauce to 'help' it out. The waiter brought me a remoloude sauce which made it a little better. Onions, green if I am not mistaken, overpowered the coleslaw so that was not good either. One thing that was very good (in addition to the view) was the key lime pie. If you are in the area, skip the meal and order dessert.

wonderful location and nice atmosphere although a bit over priced. inconsistent service and food quality makes the two star rating generous.

This place does not look like much from the front, but the back lies just off Piller Point Harbor and the views a great. They have music on the weekends and the food is very good (although a bit pricey) .

I agree the food is lame for the prices they charge. They view is nice but the restaurant atmosphere is cold and uninviting. The staff is poorly trained . Waiter had to go back to the kitchen 6 times to answer questions on the menu of the day. The only respectable seafood item worth its value would be the bowl of Manhattan chowder for 10.00The Lobster roll is the worst rip -off and surely one of America's biggest lies in the advertising industry. They offer music but it stops at 9pm on a Weekend evening!! If they wanted to please customers they should try starting over and take a survey from the locals that might help.Otherwise it remains another seaside tourist trap because there are very few ocean view restaurants on this 50 mile stretch of Hwy one between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz.

Sam's chowder house offers a great selection of entrees. Just sitting at the outside tables with the outdoor heaters on and having a cocktail/appetizers is an experience in itself.

We had not been to Sam's for several months as we were somewhat disappointed last time we went by slow service and small portions. We went again though last night mainly because it's close to our house. We were PLEASANTLY surprised!

While still pricey, we had a great meal (plenty of chowder and halibut) with good service and a nice jazz band that played soothing music at a noise level where you could still talk.

So, we will definitely be back again and would recommend it

I don't know about you but this place is horrible. I went there and ordered a bowl of clam chowder and it was full of sand. About half the bowl was full of sand and when I brought it to the attention of the server and he said that there was nothing he could do.

Don't eat here. Disgusting and Overpriced!!!

Service is sweet and so are their sides and entrees. The sweet corn and string beans are absolutely amazing sides and I know I'm in love with their clam chowder.

We adore this perfectly placed restaurant in Half Moon Bay... It's a small southward drive coming from Pacifica and unquestionably worthwhile ride to dine at this magnificent establishment.

They get romantic points for dinner ambiance too!

I've read many reviews of Sam's and I think some of the people writing don't know what a lobster roll is supposed to be. If you visit New England you will find that Sam's is true to the original tradition. A soft roll, lots of chunky lobster meat and some butter.. that is what it should be. If you don't like that you've just discovered that you don't like lobster rolls. Check out the dirty martini's and sit in an adarondak chair and see the best view for miles. All of the sandwiches are great and we like their coleslaw!

I love this place. Been there four times...twice for dinner and twice for lunch. The first time was soon after they opened and you you see they needed work to smooth things out. But my last three visits were great! Food is fresh, well cooked seafood. Not what you expect from an ocean front restaurant...far better. The service was casual but good, especially considering how busy this place was. Chowder was outstanding, lobster roll over the top, my husband had the escolar and it was fabulous. The red chowder is also great, although a little spicy. Fantastic ocean views. Highly recommend this place.

Worst Clam Chowder in the entire universe. If you mix it 50/50 with tabasco it will tast like tabasco. Tabasco tastes good. Who in their right mind rated this place before me. I ran home to find somewhere to bash this place. Overpriced, terrible food but i have to admit the service is great. They even screwed up a gin & tonic. Wow, Let's see, everyone at our table barely made it out alive. The Calimari was the best meal because it did not have taste. How do you make clam chowder without milk cream or clams? It was clear. My guess is the prior 19 reviews to mine were employees and owners of this joint. A place using chowder in their name and being the worst chowder is an absolute joke. Save your money and go to McDonalds for a Mcfish sandwich at least it will taste like McDonalds grease.

After reading the visitor guide my friend and I went to Sam's last weekend. The banner on the outside of the building touting the lobster roll as one of the top 5 sandwiches in America sounded promising. Give me a break. For $20 you get an ordinary "hot dog bun" with some lobster and butter on it. What a disappointment! Boring and bland. We also ordered the salmon burger which was much better. The coleslaw tasted like onions not cabbage. The calimari appetizer was very good. We were not pleased at all with the overall experience that came with a $74 price tag. It was the worst meal we had on our visit. Go to Mezza Luna if you would like great service, great food, a view and lovely atmoshpere. Forget the lobster roll. It's a cruel joke.

I have frequented this restaurant a number of times. Not necessarily for the food, which is "ok", but for the great ocean view. The fried calamari is good but the lobster bisque is over-rated and over-priced. Service suffers, so don't be in a hurry.

Have give it Three Trys, Your out. We are a local so we have tried this restaurant on Local Night Two Times. First time Oysters made us sick just had appetizers they weren't bad. Chowder was good. The rest of the food was bland and boring. I realize they are always packed so they probably don't care. But, this place is not good. Go to Cafe Gibraltars if you want a fantastic meal.

I just got back from Sam's Chowder House. Another great experience. I had 6 kumamota oysters and a lobster roll. I'm in heaven. Everytime I go to Sams I tell myself I'm going to try something else but I just love the lobster roll. I did try the hallibut with corn and truffle butter the other night. That was to die for. So good. I'm a creature of habit though and the lobster roll is my favorite. I like the fact that it has no mayo but just a little bit of butter -- yum!!!! The outside if really nice to as they have these cool heat lamps that look like palm trees and I love sitting in the chairs outside, drinking my beer and watching the harbor. It's a great place to go, the food is excellent and I'm always treated nice. I highly recommend it.

Sam's Lobster Roll was touted as one of the best in the nation? Pleeeeeeease! Sam's is a nice enough place right on the ocean. It sits next to a small man-made harbor and a not unpleasant place to have a meal. The wait staff was very nice. Service was good as well. No complaints on those points. The Lobster Roll? Although not prepared badly it was virtually flavorless. The roll itself was OK. The size of the roll, lobster all included was not very big considering you pay $19.50 for it some potato chips and some equally nondescript cole slaw (maybe 6 forks full). I live in San Jose and my girlfriend and I traveled there because my girlfriend was all excited about the place. What are you going to do? I'm not saying Sam's is a bad place, but this recent today show piece claiming the lobster roll at Sam's was one of the top five in the nation is beyond ridiculous.

In other words, go ahead an go, but think twice about spending 20 bones on the roll.

Just ate here for the first time on Friday with a group of friends. We had a fantastic lunch. Didn't hurt that the weather was warm and sunny, so we got to eat outside on the patio. Actually, even it's it foggy and cool out there, it looked like they had enough heaters to keep the patio pretty toasty. We were seated right away by the hostess and water and bread appeared quickly. I don't remember out server's name, but she was professional and very friendly. We had come picky eaters in our group and she was great about giving completely explanations of some of the dishes and handling lots of "on the side" requests. 2 of us ordered the lobster rolls, one ordered the tuna poki appetizer and a bowl of the chowder, and the other had the crab louie. I have to say, that Sam's has one of the best lobster rolls I have ever had. None of that heavy mayo lobster salad - this was pure chunks of lobster in what tasted like seasoned butter and some celery for crunch. The bread was grilled just the right amount so the whole thing would hold together when you picked it up. It tasted like it had just come out of the shell (which it probably did since I noticed a whole tank of lobsters when we walked in the door). This is what a lobster roll should be! My friend loved her tuna poki - said it was nicely spiced, and said the chowder (red version) was also very good. The crab louie also got rave reviews - lots of big pieces of crab. We ended up hanging out there for a while (girls afternoon out!) and eventually ordered dessert. We got one tiramisu to split, but it was so good that we had to order a second. I highly recommend this place. The food was great, service friendly, it has a nice kick-back vibe (ok, maybe our bottle of wine helped out) and beautiful views. Enjoy!

This was our 1st visit to the restaurant. The food was good, service was great, cocktails wonderful. However the middle of the night after eating here I became incredibly ill. Doubled over in sharp stomache pains, vomitting & extremely loose stools. We had oysters, mussles & clams. So doesn't really narrow it down, being as it was all shellfish.

I just returned from a lunch at Sam's . The lobster roll was terrible, greasy and had no flavor. The service was very slow I had to ask for water refill 3 X and they were not even that busy, The only time we really saw the waiter was at tip time. The location is great but the food and cost is not worth a return trip.

My girlfriend & I always drive down the coast on Sunday's and the parking lot is always packed, so we were excited to finally eat here. We walked in, one of the the hostesses promptly seated us and there was a lot of smiling faces abound. The menu looked great and we ordered from Sean, our waiter. We were stoked about trying out their namesake chowders and for the entrees of grilled shrimp salad and the ahi tuna burger. About 10 or 15 minutes later, Sean came out with our entrees. He placed them down abruptly and even spilled most of my meal off of my plate. All I got out him was an, "!Oh!". He just walked away. Walked away? No apology? No spin on it and make the situation humorous? I've served tables before in my college days and in situations like this, I would, at the least, have made light of it. Something to compensate for my flub. I was so shocked that I didn't get to state the even more obvious; "Where's our drinks and soup?! Those things come BEFORE the entree, right? It took a bit to flag down one of his fellow servers and he came out with our soups. I told him I wasn't happy with his walking away after he poured half my plate on to the table, he apologized and then realized he didn't have our drinks either. The food was OK but now I had to scarf down our soup. He didn't even offer to keep the entrees warm for us. We had our soup and then catch up to our entrees before they turned cold. The server did come back to check on us but very uncomfortably & told us that our soups were comped. I thanked him reluctantly. Another 15 minutes passed and strangely enough he brings out two soups to go. We finished our meal and he brought us our check. No offer for dessert, no refill/ offer on my drink or water. I tipped him $8 on a $50 lunch (including tax). We threw the soups out later. Who knows what he did to those. All in all, the food was OK but a bit pricey. A nice setting and handsome staff. Other places can have my money.

Although the view is beautiful, it doesn?t make up for the average food. The ?New England? clam chowder wasn?t at all, and the dressing for the Caesar salad was oily and bland tasting. We were disappointed with the food and to top it off, found it to be too expensive for the quality we were served.

A typical day after Thanksgiving in Northern California has always meant a visit to the beach. While several ocean view establishments exist in Half Moon Bay, the food has been a trade-off until now. What a pleasure to find Sam's, owned by the folks who have brought us Cetrellas in town. Just past the Beach House in the old Anchorage location, the inside is spacious with big picture windows. The food is even more impressive. We had the perfectly done salmon with artichoke hearts and a squash puree. Also tried the crispy calamari appetizer--very light and good. And the New England chowder which was a little thin but very tasty. Can't wait to return for dinner. Plenty of outdoor table seating (with heaters) or relaxing in Adirondack chairs. You can bring your dog with you outside, and walk along the ocean path below. Service was excellent. Wine choices included a Tattinger brut rose, something you don't see that often.

Just went to Sams Chowder House and it was outstanding! I really enjoyed the Clam Chowder and the fish and chips were crispy and not greasy. I had a couple of oysters as well and they were tasty!! I liked the fish market cause you can eat dinner and then pick up fish for the next day and you handle two things at once. The view is fantastic and the wait staff were really nice. I highly recommend it and can't wait to go back.

It was a beautiful, sunny day when we had lunch at Sam's, so the highlight was definitely the view. The food was pretty average and the service left a bit to be desired. Having recently relocated to the Bay Area from the East Coast, I'm still getting used to the slower, more relaxed pace out here...but this place took it to a whole other level. We waited a long time for our chowder appetizer, although I'm sure the stuff sits in a giant vat in the kitchen and is ready to be served anytime. And we waited absolutely forever for our entrees - all told an hour probably passed from the time we ordered to the time our entrees arrived. No big deal if you're having a leisurely brunch with nothing to do afterwards, but we started getting a bit impatient. I'd also agree with some of the other reviewers that most of the items on the menu are a bit overpriced - but given the size of the place and the number of people working there, they probably need to charge for their food in order to make profit. I haven't explored Half Moon Bay that extensively, but I'd imagine there are much better seafood restaurants in the area - and some probably have an equally beautiful view.

Pros: Beautiful ocean view

Cons: Very slow service, food is very average

We live in the area and have been eagerly anticipating the opening. The owner stated he was hoping to create an unpretentious, affordable chowder house where families could drop in for a steaming bowl of chowder on a cold night. I'm afraid he missed the mark.

The fish was tough and dry, the french fries were inedible, the portions were very small, and everything was extremely overpriced, including the wine list. For some strange reason they put bacon in the New England clam chowder, which turned off at least two of the tables near us. It's been a long time since I've had such a disappointing meal at such a high price.

While the service was good, it certainly didn't make up for the nagging feeling that we had been had.

There are so many excellent fish restaurants on the coast (at least three of them are at the harbor itself)that I can't imagine anyone returning a second time. If you want to enjoy the view just order a glass of wine (for $9), sit out on the deck, and save yourself $100.

Pros: The view, and only the view.

Cons: The overpriced, poorly cooked meal.

I ready about Sam's Chowder House in the Daily Candy and decided to try it. The view is incredible. The menu is very large and varied. It was hard to decide between the oysters, lobster roll, chowders or fish. We really enjoyed are dinner. The food was excellent. I highly recommend you try Sam's. We loved the seafood and are planning to go back soon.

Went to sam?s over the weekend and we loved it. Best chowder I?ve ever eaten, and beats anything I?ve had on the coast so far. Also like their fried calamari, and my girlfriend had the popcorn shrimp and she loved it, and then we shared a lobster roll, which was excellent. We read it won some award and I can see why. Service was great and we had a blast sitting outside by the firepits. I scored big points with the girlfriend for the romantic view. Great spot!

We stopped here on our way to Half Moon Bay one day and were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is a very cool design with beautiful views of the harbor and ocean. It was one of those crystal clear days on the coast, so we sat outside and had a glass of wine, then went in for dinner. I think that it had just opened the week before, so the service was a bit uneven, but the food was worth the wait. We each had an appetizer (crab croquettes and the calamari) and then split the clambake (you have to have two people to order it). Everything was fantastic! We split the key lime pie for dessert. It was a perfect way to end the meal. This is a great place for lunch or dinner if you're going over to the coast.

Advertising for New England seafood in the Bay Area. Interesting concept. To me anything along the water in Half Moon Bay gets an extra star. I liked the atmosphere. The food was typical seafood fare. Everything seemed to be particularly fresh, but I'm pretty spoiled by SF seafood so it wasn't extraordinary. Wanted to try the clambake, but the other party wasn't interested. I'll have to come back and try it eventually. Go when the weather is good...

Extremely overpriced for what you get. While the view may resemble a "new england style chowder house"..being on the ocean and all...the food doesn't even come close. It's a california style seafood house complete with over priced entrees. I'm from the east coast, so at least put some starch on the $30 tuna entree PLEASE! Brussels sprouts just don't cut it....Oh, and we got there 15 min after they opened and they still made us wait 20 min. for one of the 20 or so empty tables they had...pretentious!!

Went here on friday night....was very disappointed.....my salmon was dry and certainly it wasn't a cheap meal...had high hopes for this place....but unfortunately I think it is good location and bad food...my partner did not like his food either....tasted more like cafeteria food than a restaurant with a good chef.
