I've lived in Ballard for many years and have eaten next door at Le Gourmand many times, but I'd never been to Sambar.
I was looking at Le Gourmand's website and came across Sambar's - sambarseattle dot com - and decided to go after reading about the cocktails. They were amazing - I had a gingerini, which is basically a ginger martini - fantastic. My friend had a Saguaro which had tequila and hibiscus flower and some spicy pepper, and it was great, too. I had one as well since I liked it so much, and she had another one with rose essence, I think.
So good - very good soup and the frites are to die for!

This bar is special. It is unfortunate that someone here had such bad luck to catch the folks at Sambar on an off night, which could happen anywhere, and then never give them a second chance. But I have to admit, its ok, because this place can only remain a hidden gem for so long and has been uncomfortably full lately. Sambar is for a certain type of connoisseur, a francophile foodie. It is like a Parisian jewel box in bloom. It has the power to seduce and does, enveloping every sense. I have, on several occasions, shut the place down, floating out the door filled with a hum of pleasure and delight. It is actually not that expensive but beware, once the drinks start flowing your judgement weakens and things start to add up. But it is so worth it I would name my first born "Sambar" (which is funny considering the bar is named after the owners' child, Sam--mine would be named Sambar). I think the main bartender deserves an honorable mention here. Jay is an absolute professional and perfectionist. He has travelled the world drinking and eating the best of the best, is passionate about what he does, is inventive and treats each person like a VIP. This has been my experience. So if you don't like beautiful servers (did I mention that:), a charming multi lingual and talented bartender, and a boutique bar worthy of Parisian sophistication, don't go to Sambar!

Classy. Sophisticated. Fun. Hidden. Comfortable. Exciting. These are a few of the terms that come to mind. Sambar in Ballard resembles a sweet little find you might find in New York or San Francisco's Marina District. The best drinks in town. Those of us in the restaurant industry know - Sambar is the type of place where you can put your hands in the air and just say "make me a gin drink" w/ no other specifications, and you'll get some of the best cocktails in the city made for you, one after another. The food is good. A little small but fine for bar food. Much higher quality than 'bar food' as well. Summer / Spring / warm fall nights you can sit outside which is always fun.

Easily one of the best bars in Seattle

Pros: drinks, food, atmosphere, the bar itself

Cons: service can speed up and smile a bit more

Sambar is a cute little bar located in ballard with phenomenal drinks. Though seating is limited, the menu is a bit boring and service could be better.

While the small cozy atmosphere could be charming - all is lost from your first interaction with the wait staff. Last time I checked and was a paying customer they were not doing me a favor by just let say acknowledging my presence. We were the only clients in the bar and getting a drink truly was a act from a higher power. We had friends join us shortly after we arrived and not a single drink came out at the same time - strange. We waited 15 minutes just for a glass of wine and we asked our server if it might be coming soon the response was curt and rude - when the bar tender can get to it - seriously!? It takes like 20 seconds and at this time there were maybe 10 people in the bar. I had heard such great things but one visit was enough to turn me off for ever! My friends and I eat out several times a week at wonderful places and usually tip well above 20% - they would have to pay me and well to go back!

A small, enchanting garden offers a great outdoor seating opportunity. Steak Frites were perfect. Lots of inventive and nuanced cocktails to choose from. I felt like I was in a Parisian neighborhood gem. Everything I had heard/read about snooty service or no place to sit was completely wrong. The servers and bartender were polite and charming (if a little eager on the plate clearing). Will go back again!

Worst service I've ever encountered in Seattle and I do my best to frequent every hot or charmin gspot. What little I had of the food was good, but it took upwards of 45 minutes to get out drinks even though the place wasn't busy.

The picture and atmosphere is much cuter on the website than the actual spot. The wait staff seems almost asleep--boring, unfriendly. Not rude exactly, but dispassionate folks. I sure hope they're not going for the idea of French snootiness since they're part of le Goumand Resaurant, since I've been to France/Paris many times and the service everywhere is spectacular. The mojo of the people working there is a downer. The food isn't good enough here to outweigh the lame experience.

I had heard great things about the drinks at Sambar for quite awhile and I was really excited to go there with a few girlfriends for a relaxing Saturday evening. We arrived at about 9:15 and discovered that we would have to wait, which was no problem for us. After we told the server that we could wait for a table that was just paying, she rudely said, "Yeah, I'm gonna need to see all IDs." We are used to being carded because we are young-looking (25 to be exact), but the way she asked it was demanding and she repeatedly looked us up and down. There was not a clearly defined area to wait so we were trying to stay out of the way of the servers, who would basically just push through us. We are not stupid and we quickly got the hint that they did not want us there so we just left. I would half-expect this kind of treatment if we were dressed inappropriately and if we were rude, which was not at all the case. Don't go unless you are 40+ and are wearing khakis.

In response to Mandg's input; First and foremost let me say my husband and I were dedicated weekly patrons for over 3 years and I still think this is the best bar in the city for drinks and atmosphere. Service was always exceptional until about 1 1/2 years ago when Ester moved to the restaurant Le Gourmand . I was also there that night because it was my surprise party that was so loud. This was my favorite bar and most of the guests there have been on and off for many years. The bill was NOT suppose to be split 9 ways but the last couple who arrived needed to leave right away because she was pregnant (not drinking alcohol) and suddenly felt like she was sick. The waitress who is notorious for bad service, had been fantastic the entire evening until then and completely flipped. A simple "it is not our policy to split checks on large parties" would have been sufficient, but instead she went inside, made up checks for everyone and basically threw us out. The bartender was horrified and told me to return to talk to him directly on another night. Everyone tipped the bartender the 25% of the entire bill that would have gone to the waitress. The 2nd large party that was waiting was seated as she was pulling chairs and lifting them over our heads and when one of them commented that she like the waitress earrings, she pulled them out of her ear and threw them on the table in front of her. Overall this waitress is generally bad tempered and the other one is beautiful with an air of "I'm too good to be serving you", but wil in her own time. The owners are secure that if they loose dedicated clientel there is always enough money in this city that someone else will take their place. We are now back at Cafe Lago in Montlake, where the food and drinks are amazing, and the service is always friendly!

I have been in the service industry for 8 years and consider myself to be pretty reasonable and understanding when it comes to bad service, however this one takes the cake...

My boyfriend and I went there yesterday about 20 mintues after they opened and sat down at one of the tall uncomfortable bar tables. After sitting for a minute that waitress came over with menus took our drink order and came back a bit later to ask if we want something to eat. We ordered the ham and cheese mini-sandwiches (by the way they LOOKED amazing) then she walks over to the 4 ladies sitting right next to us and tells them all about that evenings specials, changes on the menu and what they were out of and took their order ad offered more drinks. We both exchanged glances and were curious on why we weren't given the same treament. Then she walks over gives the ladies big napkins, forks and knives and 5 mintues later hands us 2 cocktail napkins. After that she walks out with the HOTTEST pressed sandwich i've ever seen. We were both in dire need of a snack however were unable to even try the sandwich because of lack of silverware, plates ANYTHING! I mean this place is the size of my closet she kept walking by and never gave us a second glance or had the smarts to ask us if something was wrong. Finally we had it and I leaned back and set my credit card on the bar and asked for our bill. She swipped my card, charged me for everything (even the untouched sandwich) while i'm signing the credit slip and LEAVING A TIP she had the smarts to ask "Did you not like your sandwich?" and I just looked at her and said "I never even touched it I like to use a fork, knife, plate and napkin when I eat." and walked out...

needless to say I WON'T BE BACK.

It wasn't just us either the couple behind us kept looking around for her too. She may have been a fantastic server, however she can only handle a ONE tables section.

Sambar is a little gem that we have been frequenting for over 3 years - every time is more pleasurable than the one before. Jay, Lietta (frite bearing goddess), Esther before her, and the rest of the staff are hands down THE BEST. It was interesting reading the "horrible service" review - we were there that (fateful) evening, and the group being served was LOUD, RUDE, & OBNOXIOUS - yet at no time was the staff any less attentive than if they had been well liked regulars - we all like to think that Sambar is our litle slice of heaven, but this crowd acted like they owned the place - and were cheap on top of it.

If splitting the tip twelve ways is one's idea of a haute cocktail lounge, than this is not the venue for you and your (middle aged wannabe) posse.

Let's not get personal, but Sambar is.

One week later I am still shocked by the service we received by the waitress. We were a large party eating and having drinks for my best friends birthday. An hour later, several people who needed to leave asked for their bills. Instead of kindly telling us that they only took gratuity for large parties, she rudely gave those people their bills and stated ?here are your bills?.this is the ONE and ONLY time I will break up a bill?. Never did anyone notify us of their policy for large parties, nor would it have been a problem paying all together. After my friend stated that she will not be returning due to the rude service, the waitress said "good....don't any of you come back" pointing at our entire party. I will never go back and I will discourage everyone I know to avoid this place.

I had my first experience of Sambar just a few weeks ago and I must say I want more!
the place is tiny and if you've never been there not very easy to spot, just look for the sign for the sister restaurant called "Le Gourmand". there is a nice outdoors area (where we sat) that is quite nice on a sunny day but pick your time carefully because the inside will sit an absolute maximum of 15 or so people and outside might push all the way to 20 so don't go too late unless you are ok with standing/waiting.

The menu is not extensive but the choices are very well spread across the spectrum of tastes so you should find something to your liking. Being a bar their selections on cocktails is good and I recommend their Mojito knock off made with Asian plant leaf who's name escapes me as I write this.

All that to be honest is mere prelude for THE reason to go there in my humble opinion; the Cheese! their cheese selection hides itself as "cheese plate" on their menu and from what I have gathered they will most of the time bring the three typical "cow, blue, goat" combo. I specifically asked for no blue and not goat not because I don't like those but because I wanted to taste (and test) the depth of their selection and let me tell you we ended up with some amazing cheeses.

As a whole I would highly recommend it but show up early or you may have to wait a very very long time to get a table and whatever you do order the cheese plate but don't be afraid to make some specific requests.

Well... what to say about the hideous staff treatment one night?

Friends are having a drink as they have many times here... they love the drinks at Sambar. Waiter comes out singing some crappy version of 'I wear my sunglasses' harkening back to the 80's b/c my friend is wearing dark glasses (called 'fitovers') - because she was in an accident and had stitches over and under BOTH eyes. She tries to explain, AND DIDN'T NEED TO, but the waiter just spins on his scuffed heel and exits. Soon, a couple of the staff from the kitchen area walk out, point, and chuckle. Seriously, I would have expected way more than that from a familiar place. Unacceptable. I don't know what it is about some people but that was just completely inhumane treatment. To that waiter: I would have fired you, you selfish smartass.

please don't go to sambar. it is small, and my friends and i will have no room if you find out just how lovely this hidden gem is. jay is a fantastic bartender. the service is amazing. nothing goes better with cocktails than yummy frites (ask for a side of dijon). i can't say enough great things about this place. it's cute. it's like a hipster's chic basement.

With drinks like the Jacques Tati, the Black Current Margarita, and the Vesper, you can't go wrong. The bar is very quaint, but sometimes too over crowded with loud voices that it takes away some of the charm...but still, I could only wish for such a neighborhood bar!

the drinks just take too long. as a bartender who also cares about crafting a fabulous cocktail, i can empathize, but geez, a half hour is a little bit of a wait. i'd recommend going when the outdoor patio is closed, because the extra seating is just too much for a solitary bartender. i just can't see going when it's hopping, because the wait becomes more the experience than the drinks. while a high ranking by the city search editors for best bartenders in the city is justified, i don't see how they can be ranked BEST in the city when we have kacy, murray and ben tending bar at the zig zag, unless they've been retired from the category to give others a chance to win.

Sambar has gone down hill. The bartenders and wait staff are still snotty but it used to be the apps and cocktails were good. Not anymore. My friend and I ordered drinks and there was a 30 to 40 minute wait, they apologized each time but the quality of the cocktails was disappointing too. I had to ask twice for things they forgot. Snotty service, bad cocktails. I don't understand why people are crowding the place.

Let's all pitch in and get Sambar a clue for Christmas. Having really nice, handmade artistic cocktails and a wonderful outdoor seating area does not mean you can ignore everything else. It's too busy for one server! Hire more, or take out some tables. Don't just keep letting more people crowd in when you can't accommodate them. No one can sit comfortably in those chairs inside, but maybe that's the idea, to get people in and out quickly. That won't work when you take almost an hour to deliver a drink. We sat down at a table at 6:00 p.m. and did not receive our first drink until 6:50 p.m. (the drinks were delivered one at a time, a few minutes apart). It was crowded, but come on! I realize each drink is made from scratch, but get more help at the bar. The server is too busy to do anything but keep her head above water. It's not possible to get a seat outside after you've already been waiting for a drink for 30 minutes because she can't keep track of who's next. That encourages people to cluster at the crowded doorway and swoop in at the first sign of someone leaving, adding to the chaos. Chaos is OK in some settings, but not when you are paying these prices. Get some order, will you? A great thing is being ruined.

Pros: Beautiful cocktails

Cons: It takes an hour sitting on joke chairs to be served

If you're in the area, I recommend stopping by if you're in the mood for some cocktails. Bring a couple buddies, but no more because there is few seating indoors. There is, however, outside seating if the weather permits it. The service I received was pleasant, but be careful with the food menu -- because the size is very small with a big price. The frites were my favorite, they are tastey fries. The cheese sampler was the worst, and I think of it as just "heavily overpriced cheese." I wouldn't order food here again, the only reason I would return to this bar is for the cocktails. I would not go out of my way to drink at Sambar, but it's worth a try if you're driving by.

Pros: Service

Things have apparently improved. Service was great. The frites were fantastic, maybe the best in the city. The cocktails were inventive and fabulous. Expensive? Look, these are creative efforts, not well drinks. If your expectations are still locked in your spring break rum and coke days, you'll be happier at 95% of the other bars in town.

Pros: Fantastic Frites, Cool Cocktails, Slick Scene

Over rated bar for posers. Nothing special at all. We were excited about going but disappointed when we got there. Lots of people standing around trying to look cool. Staff was clueless, more interested in chatting than serving. Decor was uninspired.

After reading the posts, it appears that the service at Sambar has gone WAY downhill since January. I've worked in the food service industry for nearly 15 years.... I was shocked. Absolutely HORRIBLE service. HORRIBLE! My guest and I received our drinks (ordered at the same time from the same server) 20 MINUTES APART. After waiting another 30 minutes to order in the empty restaurant, my guest and I received our appetizer plates (ordered at the same time from the same server) 30 MINUTES apart w/o so much as a whif of an apology. The food was decent... if we had been able to enjoy eating together. Frites are fabulous, potato/corn pancakes with the smoked salmon were tasteless.

Pros: patio, ambiance, premium liquors

Cons: , service, service

So the drinks took a while, they were good, but not worth the wait. The food, not impressive at all for being next to Le Gourmand. I could do better at home. But the atmosphere was nice, the genius who perfected the lighting should help in the kitchen a little. Nice hangout when you're already drunk. If you don't fall off the chair. Oh, & someone should tell the owner that the staff drinking in the bar after work is outrageously tacky.

I want to like Sambar, to love Sambar but there are a few things that stand in my way. The mysterious facade enhances the thrill of discovering a space age martini factory. Sleek inside with a pastoral patio scene outside, I couldn't wait to sample the goods, & wait we did. The drinks were phenomenal, my composed salad was incredible, but we were asking for the check mid-course just to speed up things up! Look for a booth, the mod chairs are impossible to sit on... Worth checking out once for yourself.

Cons: , Uncomfortable seats, $10 drinks

When one thinks "elegant", when one thinks "intimate", when one thinks, "perfectly crafted cocktails that coerce one to call consistently" (alliteration is so rarely used nowawdays), one can think immediately of Sambar. The allures of Sambar are not only the lovely cocktails and user-friendly wine list, but the service and the proficient attention that revelers and fine diners appreciate alike. Go after work during the summer and enjoy the idyllic patio. Inside, the lighting is flattering; if you don't like to look at your date, then look at the art, or the requisite beautiful people that come for simple liquid (and oftentimes, cheese) joy.

What a fantastic place. Very small, just 16 seats I think, and wonderful atmosphere. Great drinks, selection of liquors. Fantastic bites from next door. and the cheese!!!! Can't wait till the weather warms up and I can sit outside on the patio!

A gem nestled into a space of soft light and luscious color, Sambar is my new favorite indulgence. Details of the room are chosen with care, from the menu paper and font, to the lamps and art work. While celebrating on a birthday date, we were treated to attentive service, flawless cocktails, and an incomparable cheese plate. Arrive early, as the room does fill to occupancy rather quickly.

The Scene
Next door to Le Gourmand, Sambar forsakes the rusticity of its parent in favor of a suave space-age den. White and light-gray walls paired with soft lighting bathe the uncluttered room in cool luminescence. Elegant,…
