Our friends rented one of the suites for a graduation party.

Very stylish- comfy beds- excellent food , bar & pool- friendly staff and right by the ocean.

Only downside- it's expensive.

There are not a lot of nice hotels in South Bay that are actually on or within blocks of the beach (Beach House Hermosa is the other great option). Keep in mind that Manhattan is hilly and you'll still have about a two-block walk down to the beach. With the opening of Shade a few years ago, there is finally a trendy, boutique destination that is not only close to the beach, but it serves up a great bar scene in its own lobby and rooftop terrace bars. Although it doesn't have an ocean view, the rooftop bar has two jacuzzis that are more for atmosphere than soaking, numerous heat lamps for cool CA evenings, and tasty mojitos.

First of all, my girlfriends and I go to Shade all the time and we are NOT Cougars (mid-20's). Shade has a great selection of wine and martinis and we always meet cool people. Hope to c u there :)

I just visited the zinc lounge and had a Fantastic time! The food was delicious, my favorite was definitely the Ahi :) The drinks, well let me just say: Oh Ya! The drinks were um how do i put this, AMAZING. The prices were compariable to other bar and resturaunts of its type in the area and in comparison were well worth it especially since they offer drinks that are not only dangerously yummy but also Very Unique. I had a drink called the "frozen orchid" which was like nothing I had ever had before and was served in an amazing glass made of ice and the taste, lets just say my boyfriend has competition because I think I'm in Love! Plus, there was a good variety on their drink menu. Also, I happen to be a fairly indecisive individual and it took me a long time to decide on what I should commit to for my first drink..like 30 minutes and included an extensive interview with the bartender for suggestions.. and I really appreciated how friendly and knowledgable the staff was with helping me decide on the right drink..which as you know can be a big decision on a saturday night! To address other reviews i read: I noticed another review suggested it was a "cougar den" and only had older people. I just have to say I am in my mid 20s and I had a great time and found the people in the bar to be a fun group of people. I met some wonderful business men visiting from australia (some my age and some older) and had a fantastic and humorous chat w/them. Overall, I found that the ages varied, with a very nice sophisticated and friendly crowd (Besides who says just 'cause your older you don't know how to have a good time?? The older australian business man had more drinks than any of us!) For the record I am not an employee or in any association, other than that I take my eating and drinking experiences very seriously! overall I gotta say that I highly recommend checking it out, I will definitely be going back, saturday with my girls in fact, so hey maybe I will see you there!

The day after I got married we stayed at Shade on Sunday Night before leaving LAX to Hawaii for our Honey moon. In Hawaii we stayed at Hyatt Regency (4 Star Hotel)..but me and my wife agreed that Shade's Room was much much better than Hyatt. (Well, Hyatt has nice huge swimming pool and great buffet)
I called all the Romantic Hotel on this City Search Top 10, to see if they have Jacuzzi in the room (That's what my wife wanted). And found out that many Hotels these days don't have Jacuzzi, since people usually use quick shower. Also places i called would cost me from $400 - $500 per night, whereas Shade on Sunday Night special only cost me $195 with $50 Dine & Drink Credit to use at the Hotel. (Very Nice~!) This was August 2008 and now it cost $225 to get same deal but still cheaper than other Romantic Hotels mentioned here on City Search. I added $60 to upgrade my room to Romance Package. They put beautiful White Rose petals around the bath tab, with complimentary Champagne and Strawberry Chocolate dipped into white chocolate. If you are hungry late at night you can call the lobby and they can get foods from nearby restaurant and delivered them to your room. We ordered buffalo wings and chinese chicken salad, and not only price of the food is cheaper than Denny's, but also tasted much much better than Denny's. My wife wants to go there again and I will definitely take her to Shade again. Wish they had some kind of Membership card to get better deal, so we can stay there more frequently.

Pros: Affordable, Very Romantic, Near Beach, 10 Minutes from LAX airport

Cons: People working at Front desk need to be more friendly and willing to help right away, No good view from window.

This place is simply awesome. I used to work for a very famous hotel corporation and none of the brands could come close to what this place has to offer.
Here are some incredible features.
1) Very romantic rooms - This place is made for love. The rooms have complete control panels that allow you to turn on and off and dim every light in the room. The rooms are also very "sound proof" so you won't hear neighbors walking around the hallways or noise coming from adjoining rooms.
2) Completely unique features - They have this incredible feature which is a glass cylinder that at the switch of a button, turns on a rod of fire. It's a compact, completely futuristic form of a fireplace. Absolutely beautiful to look at and can keep the room warm as well. Also, I highly recommend the rooms with a spa. The spa is wonderful and the room has sliding doors throughout the bathroom which can change colors. It offers a completely unique and romantic experience. The room also has a bar, complete with glasses, coffee maker, and blender. Also, they have this crazy rolling table which allows you to have a workstation/eating station right on the bed.
3) Excellent service - The staff offered us a complimentary bottle of champagne because it was our honeymoon night. The service is excellent. Also, they offer a complimentary breakfast at the Zinc Lounge which is delicious and inviting. And they also offer free DVD rentals. You just call up the front desk, tell them what movie you want to watch, and within a minute or two (no exaggeration), they come to your door and give you the DVD. Amazing!

I had been to Zinc lounge a couple of times a while back, and always enjoyed it, how ever the 'cougar' den idea wasn't far off. Recently I returned on a Saturday to find the place filled with the younger, well-dressed MB crowd that I love. The menu has been changed too, the food has always been great, but now the new additions and dinner size portions make it even better- I'm slightly addicted to the ahi carpaccio and the new dessert menu will make any girl happy! (banana foster really did improve my mood!) The decor has always been super nice, a kind of modern beach vibe, and the couches are really great for hanging with friends if you don't want to sit at the bar. And the best part- they have these martinis that they serve in frozen ice glasses! Good food, nice atmosphere, hot surfer boys, and never a warm drink...I'm liking the new vibe!

I can't believe there are positive reviews for this place. Do ya think one of the owners or managers wrote the other spectacular reviews? Maybe? Duh! Shade is the ultimate cougar den and any female under 35 is a Paris Hilton wannabe beyotch. Drinks are expensive and the bathroom is at the other end of the hotel. Yeah, the decorating looks cool but the people there [insert derroagatory adjective of choice]. Old divorcees, male and female, trying to relive the good old days. It's like high school with money and wrinkles. Ugh, hate this place. Oh, and by the time you have to leave (they close early), it's too late to get in anywhere.

This hotel is absolutely perfect! The customer service is amazing, the staff are prepared to provide for any request, and the hotel lounge provides a great place to hang out and people watch. I recently stayed here for a night with my boyfriend and enjoyed the ultra-comfortable beds, the cool in room lightening system, and the relaxing roof top pool area. At the end of the day we wen down to the 'Zinc' lounge which is the trendy bar area. It was a great place to people watch and drink martinis. Overall, our stay was exceptional, and there is nothing that could have been better! Worth a stay even if your a local.

We love to photograph weddings at the Shade Hotel. We operate www.losangelesweddingphoto. Besides being the hippest place in town, the small, cozy atmosphere of the hotel pays off at your wedding. There's room for probably 200 or so people in the courtyard--and from what I understand, brides and grooms can reserve the entire hotel for their guests. The hotel is two blocks from the beach--great for photographers who want to steal away their couple for some quick romantic beach shots during the reception--and right in the center of town.

This is a great hotel! I live in L.A but wanted to treat my husband to a birthday getaway, and found some great reviews for 'Shade' on this site. Having never forked out for a weekend away in the same city as I live in before, I was dubious about how much it'd feel as if I was on holiday. But it really did feel like a vacation. The best thing about the hotel is the rooms and its location. The rooms are beautifully decorated in sage and cherry wood, and the bed is large and really comfy. The bar has all kinds of glasses for different drinks and even a blender, so in the evening (to save money) we bought alcohol from the local VONS and made our own cocktails. The best feature of the room is the huge whirlpool bath, but coming in a close second is the fantastic lighting! You can choose to light the room various colors, and by pulling the Japanese screen across the bathroom (where the lights are) you produce your very own light show. It sounds a bit gimmicky but it's actually very relaxing and creates a great mood. Hotels can sometimes feel a bit clinical, but this one was very intimate and relaxing. The balcony was also nice. Location cannot be faulted. Practically next to the beach, there is a great French cafe right next door for breakfast and nice restaurants all around. It feels pretty classy but relaxed. There's also a 'Color Me Mine' nearby, where my hubby and I painted our own souvenir mugs! This is a great place for a romantic getaway...leave the kids at home though! Oh, one last thing! The staff are extremely helpful and friendly...always a plus!

I like starting the night out at Shade, but their drinks are a bit too expensive. The atmosphere is cool, as is the crowd except for the random old men who linger. If the deck is open, I recommend grabbing a drink up there-- it's more mellow than downstairs.

Stayed here on a recent Saturday night to celebrate my wedding anniversary. The service was exactly what you'd expect of a small, boutique hotel - I ask for a bucket of ice at the front desk when I checked in and it arrived at my room 30 seconds after I did. The room was nice and spacious, with all the amenities. The staff was friendly and helpful and even called after we left to let us know we'd forgotten something in the room. The only thing that keeps this hotel from getting 5 stars is its pool, which is very small and located o the roof. But when you're only 4 blocks from the beach, it's an easy thing to overlook.

Stayed there for Christmas and it was a great Christmas indeed. The Romantic Getaway package is worth the price... The hot tub connected to the room was great...

I have been to the Bonaventure, Biltmore, Hyat (Century City), Checkers, etc...

But this was THE BEST PLACE. Service was amazing! The staff was prompt, courteous and helpful... even on Christmas!!!

Just looking at the website should make you want to go... and please do... you will not regret it!!!

This hotel is fantastic. Romantic, funky room, mood lighting, mini bar, blender, espresso machine, iron, hair dryer, and awesome service. The whirlpool tub is big enough for 2, or 1 looking to do some serious relaxing. The bathrobe was so comfortable, I took bought 2. The memory foam type bed and pillows gave me a fantastic night sleep every night, and it's so close to the beach, awesome restaurants (Petros right around the corner is NOT to be missed) shops and bars. I HIGHLY recommend Shade to anyone looking for a high quality hotel experience.

I went to Zinc Bar on a Friday for my birthday and had a great time with friends! We got there about 7:30 which is early by LA standards, but that allowed us to snag the last couch section. A lot of people watching to be done as the place filled up. It was like seeing the typical Sunset entertainment industry-esque crowd transplanted to usually laidback Manhattan Beach. The seating was intimate enough that I was able to chat with my whole group. The noise level does increase quite a bit as the crowd moves in. The tapas style food servings were very yummy! My favorites were the Lobster Rolls, Sashimi, and Burgers (1 of ea: sirloin, chicken, and seared Ahi!). Dont let the small servings fool you. The food will definitely fill you up. There is also a good drink menu. The Mojitos were good, although my boyfriend had one later in the night and they seemed to be running low on lime...and rum. The Zinc Pink was also fun. And the melt-in-your-mouth chocolate cupcakes are a Must Have!

at least for now. friday and saturday nights can get rowdy @ the bar area. the staff here was great. As my gfriend and i were looking for a place to sit, the staff at Shade hotel allowed us to sit in a reserved area (since the reserved party couldn't make it). The bartenders and waitresses have always been kind and accomidating.

parking is easy, prices on drinks and food were reasonable... a nice place to hang out on the weekend in the South Bay.

This isn't your normal beach hotel. I live in the city and have put friends and relatives up at this very swank, yet cozy hotel. We like to nibble on the small plates at the bar and take in the surrounding shops and restaurants... its a great experience. The beach is three blocks away for summer swimming or winter strolls on the strand.

It is an older crowd (mostly older men). Drinks are expensive, but it is a nice atmosphere! Martini glasses are small, beer glasses are a pretty good size. After 8:00 the crowd loosens up and gets a tad bit younger. Great place for Manhattan Beach, but not your typical beach crowd.

What a find. I was in town on business and happened upon this jewl. Great staff, comfortable and well designed rooms and public areas. The top deck was not completed yet but was able to walk around--Could see Catalina Island. Night life at the bar starts around 6-6:30 and crowds in fast. Can't wait to come back.

I have visited this hotel bar many times since it opened 4 months ago and although things are still changing daily, I love it every time. The place obviously "caters" to the classy/upscale crowd, but refreshingly enough, there is something very down-to-earth about it; maybe because the severs/staff are so fun and friendly. During the week is chill, and the weekends are crazy busy. Go early if you wanna get a comfy couch for the night, plus, they close at 10/11pm!!! Definantly a cool, fun, unique place.....lots of hot professional gals/guys.

Pros: servers, sexy crowd, drinks

Cons: over-priced food, crowded on weekends, no dance floor

I stopped into the bar one night and ended up booking a room; it was amazing. The hotel was great, especially the mattress. My boyfriend has been insisting ever since that we buy one. Everything at the hotel is very well designed and the staff makes you feel very welcome. The best part of all, the best bar in town is the hotel.

I stayed in the Bridal Suite and never wanted (or needed) to leave my room! The beds are Tempur-Pedic (I now have one) and the sheets are heavenly. This room has an extra large spa tub and a separate shower with a steam room and a rain shower (if you run them at the same time it is great!). Also, (and apparently all the rooms have this) the mini bar is fully stocked and loaded and comes with a blender, espresso machine, and martini shaker (cool) with glasses to match all the equipment. We were also able to see the Penthouse (you can purchase and link both rooms) and there is actually a bar with beer tap in it! One more neat function is all of the rooms have "chromatherapy" and change different colors to suit your mood. the staff was great and we absolutely loved everything about it!

I stayed at this hotel and loved it and their lounge is awesome! It is very inviting and comfortable. I could see myself having clients here in the early evening and then meeting friends for a late night drink. There is one catch: you need to come early because they close around 10 or 11pm to accommodate guests. The food is great and the servers are nice! You can also eat breakfast (and I think lunch) on their Terrace in the morning- it is excellent! Again, I loved it!
