Love the Steak

by Kenneth L.

I ate here not too long ago, and I loved it. The food was great, the service was awesome, and the general ambient vibe was unique. I never thought that small places like this would catch such a big uproar, but it was great. My friends and I really enjoyed the Porterhouse steak, and would recommend it to anyone. Small, convenient, and generally great. Good food, great price, Excellent service, awesome people, what could go wrong?

Loved Alonso's

by Carlguy

Went with a friend of mine. We both ordered steaks, a ribeye & a porterhouse. Both were cooked perfectly and served by a friendly waiter. We also liked the ambiance very much.

Pros: steak, service

wrong place

by Marymeat

I went to Alonso's last night and we had made reservation, which I think we lost because we were running late, stocked in traffic, so when we got there the hostess told us we should wait at the bar for 10 or 15 minutes, we agreed and I was really excited to show my group of friends the place so small and details of a hunting cabin.
But we were sat in the next door restaurant even due they gave us a table right away it was not what we wanted, also a different menu, very loud with old music and noisy conversations of people on top os us. Last time I had eaten at Alonso's was totally different. But with this experience, I do not think I will be coming back. to go to a noisy italian restaurant, I'd stay in little italy.
THANK YOU FOR RUINING OUR EVENING MISTER MANAGER.

Pros: nice service

Cons: not the environment expected

Overcooked and overpriced

by Christo4NYC

Avoid going to Alonso's Steakhouse unless you enjoy paying for a dinner you didn't order.

A few weeks ago my partner ordered the filet mignon medium-rare with steak frites. I ordered the rib eye medium-rare with baked potato. My entree had frites instead of a baked potato and my steak had no pink or red at all and no juice, it was dry and brown all the way through. Any piece I cut was dry and brown all the way through. My partner cut into his filet and his was not medium-rare either.

The server's apology was that there was a new person in the kitchen that was unfamiliar with the grill.

I'm surprised that our entrees were prepared with so little attention to our order, that's really sloppy service. To top it all off I wrote to the email address listed on their website describing our experience, and after a week with no response I sent another which they also ignored.

Avoid this place. My experience tells me that Alonso's Steakhouse doesn't care about their food or their customers.

Pros: Server was nice

Cons: What you get isn't what you ordered

Interesting Decor, Average Food, Bad Soundtrack

by swahi

I picked this place after seeing the 5-star rating on Citysearch. But I didn't find the food anywhere close to 5-star; it wasn't terrible - but not very good either. The decor is interesting, but they ought to really stop blasting the 70's love songs. Ruins any ambiance they're trying to create.

Pros: Interesting decor

Cons: Pretty average food - you'd expect a lot more

EXCELENT PERSONAL SERVICE

by Lili75

Lovely place and a geat personaliced service by our waiter Luis. We were at Alonso's this past friday and I gave my boyfriend a dinner gift with some of our friends I picked this place because of the hunting theme and he loved that many heads hanging on the walls. Our stakes were fabulous, we all had porterhouses, since that is what we were encouraged to have when we saw them going to another table. the borelais sauce was out of this world not that the stakes needed any. when dessert came I scaped to the bathroom to let Luis know about Bratt's birhtday, and it was extranged that he asked about his name I told him, my sourprise that he came with a delicious chocolate mousse and singing happy birhtday with the rest of the staff and the mentioned happy birthday Bratt, no other place they have done that before, Nice and lovely way to do bussiness.

Pros: excelent food and great service.

Cons: too many heads on the walls

a T bone not a porterhouse

by outer69

earlier on the week we had dinner at alonsos and we had been there before and had a nice experience, so we cameback to try something different, and my boyfriend had to say something abut to the ribeye, which was tasteless like a old frosten for too long and my porterhouse, was not what I had heard before, I could not find any filet mignon quality on it. sorry, for the staff that are very nice, but not a stake house quality meats.
However the wine list is still a great bargain, so is the creamy spinach.

Pros: great side dishes

Cons: hard and tasteless meats

Best Steak joint for the money!

by whit16

Prices are right. Steaks were perfect. Service exceptional. Me and 5 others guys have been doing Steak night for years and usually went to Frankie & Johnnys in Hoboken or NYC. This place with the old butcher shop feel (and taxidermist) was a great change from the stuffiness of F&Js or the others we went to. No problem getting a table too. Sides were delicious also. Apps a bit lacking but overall a great steak joint.

Pros: PRICE SERVICE OVERALL VALUE

Cons: Apps I guess?!

EXCELENT STAKES FABULOUS SERVICE

by johnrob61

I was in Alonso's this weekend which was a bussy night for what we could see no tables available at that time, thank god we had a recervation it was six of us. the cute hostess guided us to our table a nice view of all the dead animals heads we had, not that my wife cared about it. our friends were delited, Our waiter was nice on time available when we needed him(Luis I remember his name. my friends were flirting with him, he didn't seem to mind) We were here for the first time, so we ask Luis what he recomended, he was nice and said, besides everything. I can tell you my favorites and he sugested the porter house and ribeye, but also the filetmignon is great he said. we ordered two dozens mixed oysters, they were nice and fresh. Luis brought the wines we had ordered. nice and not too expensive which we were surprised of the selection they have. We all left so happy that we made reservations for our coming gathering in december.

Pros: Good job Luis and Alonso keep it up.

Cons: could be a little bigger to fit more peopple

Great food excelent service, make reservations on the weekends

by mexbooy

My girlfriend and I were out to dinner at Alonso's last saturday, we walked in without a reservation, but a very nice and polite hostess told us to wait a few minnutes, we did at the bar. Then Louis our waiter came to get us no more than 15 minutes later. He walked us through the menu and we had a porter house and rib eye steak which werew great, not to mention his service which to my opinion outstanding.
Now we know where to get the best steaks and a nice friendly and knowledgable waiter. Ofcourse we already make reservations for next weekend with my future inlaws.
Keep up your excelent job Louis.

Pros: low prices excelent service and food.

Cons: way too many animal heads on the wall my girlfriend said.

GOOD OLD FASHION STEAKHOUSE

by 6pacman

I had dinner last nite at this little steakhouse full of wild animals.I like the old fashion lights, photos, mirrors, artifacts that grace the room. The dining room only has about 12 tables, but they fill up fast.I ordered the rib-eye steak and it was better then any of those fancy, expensive midtown steakhouses.I ordered a bottle of wine and I could not believe the size of the list,it had at least 100 wines. The only problem is that Alonsos portions are too big,no room for dessert.

Pros: big portions,small prices

Cons: no room for dessert

best steaks & creamed spinach

by dunking

I had dinner Sunday nite with a friend at Alonsos. As soon as I walked in,I knew this was going to be a great dinner.I stepped inside and my eyes opened wide ! I never saw so many wild animals in such a tiny space. They had at least twenty animals from all over the world. Our waiter said I hope you brought your camera. We looked at the menu and we both ordered the filet mignon. It was soo tender, you could cut it with a butter knife. The wine list has over two hundred wines to choose from.I could not believe it ,because the restaurant only has seventeen tables! The steaks were dry aged prime. This tiny steakhouse is a winner!

Pros: BEST STEAKS IN CHELSEA

Cons: WISH THE PLACE WAS BIGGER

We were invited to Alonsos Steakhouse for my birthday. When we arrived at the address we thought we had the wrong place. The outside front of the restaurant looks like an old butcher shop.My boy friend went inside to ask if they knew Alonsos the restaurant. He came out and pulled me in! all our friends were inside yelling SURPRISE !!! When we all seattled down I started noticing all the wild animal heads hanging. The place looks like a small hunting lodge. The dining room is amazing! If your going to go take a camera. The steaks were the best I ever had in New York. This place will really amaze you.

Pros: Best steakhouse in Chelsea

Cons: Looks like a butcher shop from the outside.Don t get confused

BEST STEAKS EVER

by lakeview12

My date and I were walking around Chelsea and just happened to pass-bye Alonsos Steakhouse. We decided to give it a try.As soon as we walked in we were greeted by a beautiful hostess that smiled and showed us our table.Once seated our waiter Louis introduced himself and we were treated like royalty. The sirloin was the best I ever had,my friend had the filet mignon, she says its better then Sparks Steakhouse. The only thing that surprised me was when the check came,I couldn t believe that the check was so low.I could have dinner here and pay almost half then what the midtown steakhouses charge.I hope Alonsos is making money.Keep up thew good work louis!

Pros: can t get better service then here

Very very small and not proper served

by armandopinto

My best friend and I diceded las week to have a party of meats but not like Brazilian one.. only one steak and we were looking at chelsa about a very good steak house and one lady told us about Alonsos Steakhouse.... A very tiny restaurant, but very chic... The Filet Mignon was delicious, the wine (Shiraz OZ) very good, but the service not good... The check also was very expensive... I continue prefer going to Brazilian bbq steak houses..

Avoid-lousy service!

by fattyfatpants

We went there last night (Saturday), and the place was packed. Small place with about 10-12 tables.Great place to go if you like being ignored. THERE WAS ONLY ONE WAITER AND ONE BUSBOY FOR THE ENTIRE PLACE!!!! Needless to say we won't be going back. The food was quite good (if you like your food served lukewarm) but not worth the effort of wondering when it will arrive. High note of the evening:the woman at a table of eight got up, took the water pitcher from the service station, and served her own table.

Pros: great steak

Cons: lousy service

PRIME TIME

by win33

I walked by this place almost every day, last nite I decided to have dinner here.As soon as I stepped in I was amazed! There was almost every animal you could imagine in the place.Pictures of old butchers at work, vintage art work and photos of the old meat market. The menu is pretty much old steakhouse, and so are the prices.I could not believe that the same steaks are almost half price then other well known steakhouses. The wine list is very large-with about 100 choices, they even have a RARE&CURIOUS page of wines.Petrus 1960,Lafite 1958,and many more.I had the rib eye steak,my friend had the filet mignon. The best we ever had.For dessert we shared the apple pie ala mode.To finish the nite the manager offered us an after dinner drink with hima nice touch. We will be back.

Pros: Prime steaks at low price

BEST STEAK

by goshjeez

I had dinner last nite at this cute little steakhouse named Alonsos.I could not believe the prices were so low,and the quality so high.I love steak,I eat out all the time and go to every steakhouse in N.Y. This little place is amazing, not only the best steaks but when you walk in you are amazed at all the decor of wild animals.Bears, deer, moose, african elk, buffalo, texas longhorn and so many others I don t even know.I had the porterhouse for one, creamed spinach, dessert and coffee, two glasses of wine and the bill was under $50. Any other steakhouse it would have cost me over $80. This is going to be my new place for steak.

Pros: BEST STEAKS AT A LOW PRICE

We had dinner at Alonsos last nite.I love the porterhouse steak my girlfriend wanted the surf & turf ,This is the only place I know where I could get a porterhouse for one. Both our entrees were better than any of those over priced midtown steakhouses. The side vegetables are less then half of what the other places are charging. If you want prime steaks this is the place to go.

MIDTOWN STEAKS AT DOWNTOWN PRICES

by criti

I had dinner last nite with friends at alonsos steakhouse. At first I thought we had the wrong place, the outside looks like an old buthcher shop from the 40s.When we walked in what a surprise! We were all shocked! We stood there with our mouths open. The dining room looks like an old hunting lodge with animal heads from all over the world, pictures of old butcher shops and butchers at work.Every artifact is original.I ordered the porterhouse steak it came out charred on the outside and rare inside, just the way I ordered. My friend ordered the filet mignon, the waiter who took our order told us you don t need a steak knife for our steaks,he was right! it was juicy and tender. The wine list has over 80 bottles on it and a page that reads rare and curious wines. The side dishes are large enough to share. The desserts are individual pies but are big like a full pie.If your going to go to Alonsos bring a camera

Pros: you don t have to run to the atm machine

Cons: don t forget to bring your camera
