I'm the idiot who posted the last review about the ripoff because TD Bank told me that the charge on my account was El Centro, when it was in fact another bad mistake from TD Bank.\n\nMoral of the story, don't bank at TD and eat at El Centro!

I went to El Centro and the next day found out that I had been charged over $3,500 on my credit card for a $46 bill! When I called the restaurant Silvio said it would take a few days to ""check it out"" when I got furious and demanded that he fix it more quickly he refused to give me the corporate number and told me I would have to wait for a call back. Anyone can make a mistake but three and a half grand?

Pros: food and ambiance are good

Cons: I was overcharged

I have been here several times. They have great drinks and even better food. The chilaquiles are to die for! It is a creamy chicken yet crunchy goodness. The staff are very friendly. The only downside is that the space is really small.

I went to El Centro this saturday (11 October 2008) for a late lunch with a friend, she knew that place and recommended it. I must say that the decoration is really loud, but this is how it is supposed to be, the food is good and prices quite reasonnable. \r\nI felt like I was actually having my (late) lunch with a very pretty girl sitting opposite to me on the other side of the room. I couldn't resist letting her know that I appreciated her (somehow distant) company and expressed my liking. Although my intention was not to get any phone number, had it been given to me, I would have used it maybe for a (less distant) lunch at El Centro, or alternatively for dinner date in Paris, France. This idea still remains open. \r\nVincent \r\n(con tact would be : legalvince -at- aol -dot- com) \r\n

The location is fantastic and the decor is festive, so I really wanted to love this place but the food is average. I am from California and have grown up eating authentic Mexican, and this wasn't it. The chips and guac was sub-par, margaritas ok, and the tacos I had were pretty flavor-less. If I hadn't had such great Mexican food before, I would've liked it. At least it was cheap!

I live close by and was always intrigued by the crazy, quirky, colorful interior that is in such contrast to the somewhat harsh all-metal exterior. But then, a friend and I went for dinner and drinks, and we've been hooked ever since. \r\n\r\nThe house margaritas are made with good tequila and fresh lime juice on the rocks. I like the frozen ones because they are strong without tasting so. I try a different flavor each time. My current favorite is Guava.\r\n\r\nYou'll probably want to ask your waiter/waitress for help with the menu. Some items, like the chilaquiles, require explanation. And some things are not as you might expect. For example, the hard shell tacos are not something you'd eat with your hands. They all have some sort of sauce poured on top. My favorite is the fish taco, which has mashed potatoes inside (amazing!!!) and mole negro sauce on top.\r\n\r\nI also recommend the pozole -- a sort of soup/stew. The chicken pozole reminds me of tortilla soup, but without the tortillas, with cooked hominy instead. The broth is spicy hot, and will clear another's sinuses!\r\n\r\nThe enchiladas are delicious. Chicken is my favorite. I substitute the green sauce for the one it usually comes with.\r\n\r\nMy favorite entree is the Steak Burro which is a giant burrito filled with grilled steak, rice, black beans and guacamole. It's the best burrito I've had anywhere in the city! \r\n\r\nI've been generally very happy with the service. Everyone is very pleasant. Sometimes they are a little crazed when it's busy. It's an absolute zoo on Friday and Saturday nights. I love going on Sundays and Mondays when it's slower.\r\n\r\nMy only cons are: 1) sometimes the food is not very hot, 2) the quesadillas and empanadas are too small for the price, and 3) I don't care for any of the desserts. Otherwise, it's all thumbs up for this little gem. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Pros: Great margaritas. Delicious and different Mexican food choices. Fun vibe.

Cons: Some of the appetisers are too small for the money. No great desserts.

I tried El Centro last night ago and thought it was great. Great food, great price, good service, nice atmosphere. Staff was pretty great and the menu has plenty to choose from. If you're looking for something less upscale than say Hell's Kitchen, but much much better than your average mexican place this is it . I have to say, I just love this place. I have yet to have a dish that I have found to be less than fantastic. The service is always excellent and friendly. It's the perfect place! Trust me, you will love it. \r\n

I've never actually had lunch or dinner at El Centro, so I can't tell you how authentic their food is. Let's be honest though, NYC simply doesn't have good Mexican food, so why waste your money on a $13 burrito? Instead, go for their very un-Mexican weekend brunch. Much like blondcookie82's review, I highly recommend the french toast or the Huevos Beneditos (eggs benedict, if you hadn't figured). Add a side of fries (a must-have) with a Limon Jarrito and your weekend should be off to a great start. Take note though, El Centro has exceptionally tacky decor (you'd have to see it to understand) and plastic chairs, so don't plan any first dates here... On the other hand, it's great for large groups of people. With great food, reasonable prices, and attentive service, El Centro's brunch is muy bueno, just not muy Mexicano...

El Centro is how Mexican food should be, fun and cheap with strong drinks. Even the long wait for a table is enjoyable if you get a mango marguerita. Service was above average and they followed instructions well.

I recently went to El Centro and will not return. Having been a waitress myself in college, I'm always more than nice to servers. I ordered a shrimp quesadilla, which was a disgusting fried-type of thing that was literally dripping with oil. When our waiter finally checked on us, I very nicely mentioned that I didn't care for my food to which he replied, ""Yup the quesadillas are not like usual ones here,"" and walked away! No asking if I wanted something else, etc. I didn't touch my plate and when I complained again the waiter got very agitated and was extremely rude and then ignored me for the rest of the night (only filling my friend's water glass when mine was empty, etc.). Finally another server cleared our table and asked if I wanted to wrap up my food, I said that I hadn't like it--and clearly ate none--and he rolled his eyes and said nothing. When we got our credit card receipt back, our server had written in the tip on my slip as one cent to make some sort of a statement--completely unacceptable!! My friend's food wasn't great either, so between that and the rudest service ever, I would definitely not recommend this place!

Cons: AWFUL service, overcrowded, bad food

Despite being overlooked for seating twice, the food was decent. Hostess and management seems a bit clueless and but the wait staff was nice. The food was good, especially the Pozole, which was exceptional. We think charging for extra chips and salsa (in teeny weeny bowl) was a bit cheap, considering the entrees were not.

El Centro is my favorite place to visit for sunday brunch in New York city. I make a point of swinging by whenever I am in the city for work or for play. French Toast and the Eggs Benedict are my favorites. I live in Boston and cannot find a place that I enjoy more than El for brunch. \r\n\r\n\r\nLove the fun atmosphere and the music!

My boyfriend and I visited El Crappo on a Sunday after reading positvie reviews on city search....boy do I wish we hadn't. It was jam packed with way too many tables for such a small place, we were forced into a small area between four older women who reaked of way too much perfume. Not only could we not move our legs, but it was unbearably hot and they were playing some tastless rap music in the background.\r\n Being fair-minded we waited to taste the food before we judged. HORRIBLE! A tiny ramekin of guacamole as an appetizer was liquidy and tasteless. His entry resembled a large bowl of chips and cheese whiz. EVen though we dug to the bottom we could find no chicken. After feeling nauseous and eating only a few bites each we called it quits. \r\n If I ever had food from here again i would DEFINATELY get it to go....but then again Taco Bell is better quality for 5 bucks as opposed to the 40 we spend on dinner.\r\n Thanks El-Crapo...I don't have to tell you how we came up with this name.

Although the restaurant decor makes the place look really good, it doesn't do much for the food. I've definitely have better mexican then what I had here at Brunch. \r\nI wouldn't recommend going if you are looking for good Mexican food. The drinks are decent.

After going to literally hundreds of restaurants in NYC I can honestly say that the service at this place is the worst I have ever encountered. Waiter was exceptionally slow and when he did grace us with his presence he was downright nasty. Food was mediocre. With so many places to choose from why waste money at an establishment that clearly does not value its customers?

I love this place - the bright and shiny decor, the food is de-lish - the tortilla chips and salsa are wonderful. The burritos are really really good, and I'm a huge fan of their chips and salsa. Quesadillas are tasty, but small (appetizer size), though their fajitas leave something to be desired.... AND their margarita happy hour is just fab - so many different fun flavors to choose from!

This place is a great quick lunch spot. A tasty margarita will make those last few post-lunch hours of work fly by. The interior is colorful and interesting. If you are in the area and want to try mexican, I would suggest Hell's Kitchen, but this place is quicker and not as costly.

With so many restaurants serving food with tons of flavor, I must admit I will not go back here. It was not horrible. I finished my food. I did enjoy the chips and salsa. Guacamole was bland, just chunks of avacado with almost no seasoning. I got a margarita, frozen with salt...again..okay. It was served in a tumbler, which is weird...I have never been to a Mexican restaurant that does not serve frozens in a pretty little mararita glass. Then dinner - Fajitas...way bland with only one greasy, stuck to the napkin tortilla. And everything was lukewarm. I hate giving bad reviews, but I would not want others to waste their time or money. I have to believe there are better places to drop some hard earned cash with a better return!

I have been to this great restaurant a number of times since they have opened this past winter and I have yet to be disappointed!\r\nThe value and the quality of the food can't be beat. Its traditional Mexican and thats hard to find in NYC. They could have one of the best margaritas in the city!\r\nPlus the decor is spectacular. Its a very lively place and I love the music.\r\nStaff is great, they are very friendly. The place can get pretty busy but the staff always seems to try their best for you. \r\nIts just an all around fun place to hang out with friends and have some delicious food, fantastic drinks, awesome tunes and have a wonderful time. A perfect neighborhood hangout!\r\nI was surprised to read the negative reviews on here but then I remembered that some people are super cheap and impossible to please in this city. So ignore those bad reviews because we all know those types of people and they go out of their way to find problems in all situations.\r\n\r\nI TOTALLY recommend this great little spot to anyone who is looking to have a fun and enjoyable dinning experience!!

This is my favorite restaurant - they have great drinks (the margaritas are awesome - my friend and I love the raspberry and guava flavors - but they also have specialty drinks and sangria. The sangria is not the best but otherwise the drinks are fantastic. The food is also quite good - the soft seafood taco, empanadas and lamb pozoles (a corn based stew) are exceptional. \r\n\r\nHowever, what keeps me coming back time after time is the staff - they are friendly and fun. It is surprising to see negative reviews on the courteousness of the staff. I have never been there on Saturday night and the one Friday night I went was extremely busy but the staff was always very interactive and amiable. I typically go some time during the week (in the evenings from Sunday through Thursday) and have had an amazing time. Although small (4 seats) the bar area is also nice to seat at and chat with the bartender and you may also eat at the bar.\r\n\r\nOverall, I highly recommend El Centro - go in and enjoy yourself and I am sure you will have great food, drinks, service and conversation!

I think it is a testement to New Yorkers that most reviews of most restaurants on most websites in NYC are negative. People judge based on expectations not actual experience. And everyone always says the service is slow or rude or something. El Centro is bright and loud but being a huge fan of Mexican food and having spent years in Mexico (Baja and Oaxaca) I would say that the food is the most authentic I've had in NYC. If you are served cold food - send it back. If you are in a hurry - tell your server. In Mexico all service is slow - they don't come to your table unless you ask them too because they consider it rude to interrupt or hurry you away.

It's a cheap restaurant, but not in the good way. The owners are cheap. You start with a basket of tortilla chips and a dish of salsa so small that you actually have trouble dipping your chips into it. Don't bother asking for another, El Centro seems to be the only Mexican restaurant in NYC that actually charges for extra baskets of chips, $3.00 a pop. The bill was $45.52, I handed the server $60.52 and wanted change, she handed back the $.52 and said they don't take change(coins), ""we just round it."" Our change comes and there is only $14.00, not $14.48. El Centro seems to think that they have the right to keep money that's not theirs. I'm not saying that the $.48 is going to ruin my night, but it's the principal. Bottom line is El Centro's a cheap restauraunt and I do not recommend going there.

I couldn't wait for El Centro to open but when my boyfriend and I tried it we were very disappointed. The service was very slow and the food was below par. The only good thing was the Sangria. There is much better Mexican not only in the city but in this neighborhood as well.

Pros: Drinks

Cons: Service, Food

I was pretty impressed by this place. The atmosphere was great -- bright, Oaxacan colors and decorations throughout. The food was really good too; authentic mexican flavors instead of your standard soft taco and taquito plate. It's a little small though, so better for a group of 2 instead of a group of 6.

As a fan of Mexico- El Centro leaves much to be desired. The service was really slow- the food was relatively bland and, beyond that, cold. No one wants cold mole sauce over a cold tortilla and lukewarm steak- which is exactly what El Centro served me.
