The Scene
Rustic stone floors, cracked columns dripping with ivy and hieroglyph wall art mimic ancient civilization. Amid leafy palms and regal blue lighting, welcoming servers deliver heaping, hearty platefuls to well-heeled diners with adventurous palates.

The Food
The small, quirky menu features American, Assyrian and Babylonian-inspired fare, from oysters Rockefeller with Pernod cream to prime rib and ground beef mingled with cracked wheat. Meals begin with warm pita and a satisfying plate of hummus drizzled with olive oil, parsley and tomato. A twist on bruschetta, grilled shrimp is sprinkled with soft, sharp cheese on garden-fresh chopped onion, tomato, and cucumber "salad" and toasted pita. Fine entrees include savory-sweet Athar kebabs; crisp, almond-coated rainbow trout; and a monstrous platter of grilled chicken, beef and veggie shish kebabs atop almond- and sultana-specked rice.

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - In addition to a standard bar assortment, the beverage menu features nearly 15 fun martinis, including the "ancient nuts and berries": a concoction of Smirnoff, Frangelico, Chambord and Bailey's.
  2. Know Before You Go - Because entrees hover in the $20 range and incorporate unusual ingredients, it may be best to leave finicky kids at home.
  3. When to Go - Be sure to stop in, either Tuesday or Wednesday, between 4pm and 6pm for half-price appetizers.
  4. What to Drink - Try the Cairo at Night, a concoction of Stoli raspberry and Chambord, or the Lebanese Lemon Drop, flavored with Ketel One Citroen vodka, sour mix and triple sec.
  5. Where to Sit - On a nice night make sure to request a seat on the large outdoor patio. Both liquor and hookah are available out there.

by Mary C. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,165

We walked in this place and felt like we were in another world. I was sure that the food was going to be so-so but I was wrong! It was so good, everything that our group had was just perfection! We will be back a lot!

BEST ARABIAN RESTAURANT IN CHICAGO

by SalGaddam

First of all I would like to preface this review by saying I have been to almost every Arabian restaurant in chicago and surrounding suburbs. The service was great at ATHAR. unlike every other Arabian restaurant around, I did not need to hunt my waitrer down. My water was always filled and my waiter came back to ask if i needed anything multiple times. The food was phenominal from the dolmah to the kibbeh. There are so many choices of Arabian food to eat. My maqlooba was impecable with boneless chicken breast and boneless meat and the knaffah and baklava is made right there and is great!
I am definatly going back over and over again. They also have a lunch buffet everyday for get this ONLY 9.99

Pros: Kibbeh was phenominal

Cons: there are no cons surprising for an arabic restaurant

Best kept secret in Elmhurst

by kimberlyjpierce

I must admit that I have never written a review before. However, the best kept secret for great food is in Elmhurst. Athar has great food and the price are reasonable for what you get. They have best rice I have ever had and the deserts are to die for. My husband always has their steak which is as good if not better than any major chop house in the Chicagoland area. When friends come to visit from out of town, I don't take them Downtown (Chicago), I always take them to Athar. I would eat their every week if I could. I feel like I shouldn't say how good they are, otherwise they may get to the point where weeks in advance reservations would become the norm. The secret is now out.

Pros: Comfortable surroundings - Jeans to Suits. Service cares about you.

Cons: None.

One of the best arabic food in chicago

by rashad83

I honestly have been to many arabic food places in chicago and athar tops them all.although there is some places from the burbs to chicago and the north side i thought athar is the best in food and decor. The menu is the usual in all arabic places such as humus and kabobs but better quality. prices are reasonable and the place is small and cozy. the service is good but don't compare it to cite or gibsons, overall i really recommend this place and i have yet to see a real traditional arabic food restaurant that is top notch.

Pros: rice, kibbeh and humus

Cons: none

The dining at A'thars is very enjoyable. Everything from the food to the Belly Dancing was great! The service was fast and friendly to say the most. The staff is very attentive from the time you are seated to the thanks they give you as you leave. I have told friends about A'thar's so they can experience it.

Athar is one of the best establishments in the western suburbs! The owners take a personal interest in everyones needs and this gives a very friendly and warm atmosphere. I have been there several times and continue to go back time and time again. The bar is always well stocked, the service is very good and even when it's busy. The owners help out all the time. The free warm pita and humus is always a delightful treat and the food is served with great presentation. The live entertainment (belly dancers) gives the place a great ambiance and the prices are very reasonable. The place has become better than ever because the owners care so much about their customers and make changes to better suit their growing customer base! Eat at Athar's see it for yourself, you will walk away with an enjoyable experience!

Pros: Great ambiance, Delicious food, Freindly atmosphere

Cons: Not on a major street, No valet
