I have been so stressed last week and I wanted a coffee, a great coffee, I have been looking for a coffee shop that I can be a regular in here, I can see that in the future.

I went there with my boyfriend for my birthday dinner... Without having to wait a minute, the waitress escorted us to a kind of "winter garden" dining room... AWWWWW!!! The small fountain, the ivy, the coloured lanterns... 5/5 cum lauda to the atmosphere!!! :)

The waitress was lovely, fast enough, but not on a rush and always around to give us pepper, pour us wine... without satying to close. The foos was eccellent, from the appetizer to the pizzas to the dessert! You can also hear the jazz music coming from the jazz lounge when you eat under that kind of light that makes your dinner an amazing romantic experience.

The bill was even less than we expected, considering also the great service and the wine list.

Greenwich Village is an area full of cafes and attractions... but please stop by this pearl of a place when you're there.

I adore this caffe'. Nothing spells a perfect NY Saturday to me more than being able to sit at La Lanterna with a book and a cappuccino. Perfect location, wonderful light...if only they could get a handle on the dishwashing noises....

Pros: excellent cappuccino, Old World feel

Cons: loud clanking of dishes at front counter

.

Romantic and cozy. I really like their dessert here. Great tiramisu and flavorful gelato. Entrees were good too; I got the prociutto pizza and my bf got their pesto lasagna and both were yummy. The funny thing is there is a lady reading tarot card right next to us. IT is kind of eccentric.

Beautiful outdoor garden in the back btw for those seeking dining in the green.

Pros: Beautiful Garden, Friendly Service & Good Food

What made this place unique? The worst service in five boroughs... want your waiter to treat you like your most crazy ex used to? Try out La Lanterna. Like snarky answers to simple questions? Would you like to be denied a napkin or a glass of water? This is your place.

great REAL italian pizza for low prices, with a lovely garden to sit in the back. don't miss this place b.c there are lots of other italian restaurants that will charge twice or more for the same thing.

After reading all of the reviews for La Lanterna Caffe, I expected this place to be the perfect Valentine's Day dinner spot; boy was I wrong. I can certainly deal with the slow, absolutely flat and disinterested service on a holiday evening, but the food was shockingly bad. I've had better lasagna come out of a microwave in comparison to what was plopped in front of us. The cheeses they used were completely separated, and it was obvious that they were just re-cooking giant batches of lasagna being carted in every five minutes by surly kitchen staff who seemed to take some glee in allowing the door to the outside SLAM constantly. The lasagna was truly awful, all of the cheese solids were clumped up into a disgusting mass and all of the oils had COMPLETELY separated. If eating not just over-cooked, but poorly reheated lasagna with enough separated oil to make you think you were eating grease soup sounds good, be sure to go to La Lanterna Caffe for their Valentine's Day lasagna dinner.

I met my now fiance here on a blind date and it was perfect! So romantic, the cappucinos and desserts are great and the service is just attentive enough to get what you want/need but hands off enough to allow the magic happen. We go here all the time and relive the wonder of that fateful night...We love you La Lanterna!

Wife and I went before a show. The pizza was decent. Thin crust, sauce was a little runny. She had lasagna. Would have been nice to have bread with it. Service was nice. Didn't bother us a lot but when he showed up he would chat a little. The weekend "see New York" scavenger hunt groups were coming through so we got an unexpected floor show while we ate. The manager was there and stopped by to see how things were.
Prices were very good. Our bottle of wine cost more than the two meals and it wasn't that much for the bottle. Dessert was good too. I would recommend to someone who wants medium to light amounts of food.
Also we sat out in the covered garden. It was nice as the sun went down and the lights went on.

Five members of Meetup?s Thrifty Gourmets group and I field-tested La Lanterna Caffe on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 7:45 PM. The restaurant did not appear to employ a host. I was greeted instead by a friendly young man who was working the floor and who, later, waited upon our table. My reservation had been held. The six of us were seated promptly at two tables that our waiter pulled together in the front of the restaurant. In retrospect, I wish that we had been seated elsewhere, as this area soon became crowded with individuals waiting to be seated, as well as other diners. It appeared that La Lanterna?s management wanted to fill as many tables as possible in the venue?s limited space. Our waiter, although warm and courteous, was not self-assured, was not familiar with the prix fixe special mentioned in Citysearch?s description of the restaurant, and delivered a glass of wine other than the one she ordered to a member of my group. At various times throughout the evening, the restaurant?s manager needed to coach him. Our dishes were delivered promptly and, other than that glass of wine, as ordered. They were presented simply and straightforwardly. The portions were sufficient, just large enough to be lightly filling. I shared the duck salad and lasagna with pesto with a fellow diner. Both were flavorful, if not memorable. The lasagne?s thin noodles were moist and chewy, and its rich flavor lingered nicely on my tongue. My meal, with tip, cost $15. It was enjoyable, but not compelling enough to return to La Lanterna frequently.

The prix fixe menu mentioned in the "Know Before You Go" was not listed on the menu. When we asked our waiter, he had no idea and called over the manager. The manager recited the "deal" which, at $40, did not sound like a bargain. Actually, it sounded like the manager made it up on the spot. That said, the food was fine. Something to keep in mind if in the Village late at night. Perhaps I would have liked the restaurant better if we had been seated in the garden.

Pros: Service, Location

I used to really enjoy this place, but over the years the service has gone downhill. The waitstaff has become less and less attentive. The food is still very good, but the service is not. I was charged for the wrong order and received the wrong order of food. It's time to look for a new cafe.

The pizzas here are wonderful! They are truly unique and blend delicious flavors of goat cheese, pesto, rucola, etc. The menu is fairly affordable with most dishes ranging from $10-15. Its quiet, quaint, and the service was just right.

~~Super busy, nice place to hang out, too overprice, great lasagna.~~
I went there to have my valentine dinner and made reservation couple weeks before. Got worse table even I did request outside winter garden table... My table was very noisy... because next to waiter station. The overall food is ok, not too bad, not great as I expect. $ 45/ person, I expected more than that. Must try their lasagna and coffee, great cappucino.....
Friendly hostess (maybe the owner) which always make smile us. Waiting line for restroom. The service ?, the server Sebastian always smile, introduce some wine, even we reject it. Please remember, it is caffe, don't expect star restaurant service even with that price. He did not rush us, did not forget to fill up our water, comfort us with his personal touch.
If you have extra money ?, come over... again, don't expect more than a "overprice" caffetaria. Don't make it for your first date or first important place, try One if by the land, two if by the sea... instead....
Just to hang out, you are safe.

La Lanterna is one of my favorite spots in the city, period. It's completely charming, the waiters and waitresses are awesome and the pizza is just delicious. Go in the summer and sit in the garden, or go in the winter and cuddle with your honey by the fireplace. A bottle of wine and a pizza or two here is a completely affordable way to have a really romantic date. It's also a great place to go to have coffee and cake and catch up with an old friend.

This cozy restaurant is a delicious choice. I was torn between ordering the panini or having the lasagna... and ended up having the lasagna bolognese. Yummy! Served in a small dish and baked with just the right amount of cheese and meat sauce, it left me wanting more!
Can't wait to try their pizza...
My boyfriend & I sat right next to the fireplace... which was perfect!
I can't believe I've never been here... now I will definitely be a "regular"!
I highly recommend it... affordable... romantic... good food... nice service... tasty menu... all good stuff :)
It's a great place even if you only want coffee & dessert too! Try it, you won't be disappointed!

My bf put together a dinner celebration @ La Lanterna for my bday w/ friends. He & I arrived w/ 1 friend & waited for the other 4 to arrive. The staff offered us a corner table nr. the front to wait for our party to arrive while they readied our outside garden table. Finally, when no one had showed 20 min. late, we asked for our table. The staff was understanding about our missing party members & quickly readjusted unneeded xtra tables & chairs. An hr. past the declared dinner time, the missing 4 people showed up, scooting over the tables the restaurant had left open just in case. They were very accomodating to the late comers as well. Even though the service can be a lil' slow, they have great food & drink @ this restaurant! Some say it's noisy & unromantic, but I really enjoy the atmosphere of La Lanterna & will always enjoy introducing friends & family to this place.

I remember visiting La Lanterna in the afternoons while studying at NYU beginning in 1995; reading my text books and making notes as I sip a cappuccino and devour the best tiramisu in the city (yes, it is the best). The atmosphere has such a quaint European feel. The decor is warm and inviting with traditional hard wood floors and fireplaces that add the right touch in the colder months. I have literally eaten at La Lanterna hundreds of times since 1995 and always enjoy the atmosphere of this hidden treasure.

My loyalty to La Lanterna continues after 12 years. I come to La Lanterna every year (almost) to celebrate my anniversary with my partner where we had our first date in 1999. A peaceful weekend dinner is still possible.

While all should enjoy this Italian restaurant and wine bar, it did come as quite a shock to have a very poor experience during my last visit a couple weeks ago. A few friends and I decided to eat dinner at La Lanterna. We sat down and immediately had the worst experience I have ever had at La Lanterna. We were not treated well and we felt uncomfortable with our waitress. Not only did she forget one of our orders, forget silverware (twice), forget her manners, she never smiled or even said thank you during our entire hour. That may seem trivial, but perhaps you had to be there. It was not enjoyable, especially at an upscale restaurant. Although our food was well salted, the owner wasted no time pouring a little extra salt on our wounds.

When confronted, quite diplomatically, with our disappointment, the owner was unconvincing in his apologies and was sarcastic in his tone and words. Perhaps he thought he was lightening the situation with humor, but asking us if he "should kiII" our waitress didn't quite seem honest and sincere in understanding our disappointment.

If it were any other restaurant I would probably never go back, but I just can't bring myself to make that sacrifice given their great tiramisu.

Such a sweet place. Such an extensive wine list. Such beautiful desserts. Such HORRIFIC service.

Three friends and I stopped in last Saturday night around 10:00 pm. As the weather was beautiful and mild, the place was extremely busy. I do not allow that fact to justify the abominable service my friends and I received. Our cold waitress came over to our table with a ?what do you want??. No smile, no ?how are you??. In fact, accompanying her words was an extremely angry face as well as an extremely aggressive demeanor. When I ordered only a glass of wine, the waitress said, ?you?re not eating anything?? in nothing short of complete rudeness and disgust. We had to ask twice for silverware. And when she delivered it, the waitress threw it on the table. Yes, my water glass was refilled but it was slammed on the table. Our waitress appeared to work in a really chaotic manner. I have witnessed stellar service in busier restaurants. Though she was busy, my friends and I felt as though she had a real problem serving us. The tense feeling she created when she came to the table put a real damper on our dining experience.

I called to the manager to express to him our real displeasure with the service. He then offered a bizarre apology by saying, ?what do you want me to do, k*ll her?!?? but also defended her a little too much, mainly by offending me, the only woman at the table: ?well, miss, you know how the ladies can get. They get busy and have things in their minds.? Well sir, I know how this lady can get, and she will not soon forget the poor service she received here, nor the insult you just dished out.

We were all each comped a glass of limoncello. It was nice. It did not, however, succeed in numbing or sweetening our sour evening at La Lanterna.

We went to La Lanterna the other night on a friend's enthusiastic recommendation and it was great! The thin crust pizzas were the real deal, the coffee and dessert-which I am told harkens back to their humble beginnings as Greenwich Village coffee house-were excellent, the Backyard garden is one of the city's finest, and Ken, our waiter, provided us with attentive yet unobtrusive service. We plan on becoming regular customers, and will recommend it to all our friends. You must try this place, you will not regret it!!!

Cons: Only one location, there should be a hundred!

Soft lighting, lush ivy covered walls, the sound of cascading water in the background, scrumptious lasagna, luscious wine, and delectable desserts. All of the aforementioned describe la Lanterna to a tee. Simply magical...

I'm always up for a romantic meal with my boyfriend, so after reading the reviews for this cafe, we headed out there on a Sunday afternoon. Our experience turned out to be the antithesis of romantic. We tried to sit in the outdoor garden area, but the acoustics of the space made it too loud to bear. I ordered the roasted chicken salad and the waiter made a joke about slaughtering a chicken down in the basement for me (how romantic). I was served with a bed of mesclun greens topped with what looked like cold cut slices of chicken-not very appetizing. The waiter became too busy to give us our check, even after we asked for it twice. We ended up estimating the bill ourselves and just left the money on the table and left.

my boyfriend and i tried La Lanterna after reading some reviews on city search. the food was affordable and very good. we recommend the lasagna bolognese and lasagna pesto for dinner, and the chocolate mousse cake for dessert. delish! the only con i can think of is that it's very dark downstairs, but once you figure out how to position the little candle to read the menu and order, it's fine. we will definitely go back and try to sit in the garden area - it was full when we got there. overall, very positive dining experience.

this is the place to go to when you're hungry post 11pm... they serve food until late and its good!
why go to a crummy eatery or get pizza...
dark, fireplace romantic... good service.
Only Con - i was slightly annoyed that there is a wine list on the menu, and i took time figuring out what i wanted, and then the waitress gave me another list when i tried to order from the main menu list. not a big deal, but the prices were higher on the new list than the old list...they should just scrap the old list if thats the case.
overall, a good place to take a date or a friend.

Visited La Lanterna last night for the first time. And if you've never been there, I recommend you check it out. Everything was great! From the fantastic Pizza, to the manager, John's, personal attention. I can' t say enough good things about La Lanterna. The only thing I regret is that we did not have the time to listen to the live jazz emanating from the Bar Next Door. But we will soon. This place rates up there with the best!!!

My husband and I walked from the Upper West Side today for lunch, as the reviews here were compelling. PERHAPS this place was just having a bad day, but it was uniformly dreadful from beginning to end. The service was so bad we thought we were being secretly filmed for a reality TV show. The place was not busy, yet we had to wait interminably for simple amenities like menus and water. The waitress had a sullen, churlish attitude, with much sighing and eye-rolling accompanying every seemingly inappropriate question such as, "What is the soup today?"---a question disturbingly unanswered by the soup itself. The pizza had some potential, had it been served sooner at a decent temperature. We noticed that diners at surrounding tables were all complaining and unhappy as well. The bathroom was hard to get to (downstairs, through the dark basement) and unclean. As for ambience, we found it dark and lifeless. We are not complainers and can usually find some merit in every place we go, but we came up snake-eyes, here.

I was just here last night. It's my 3rd visit actually in 2 years. They have the best menu selection of little sandwhiches, pizzas, etc. and the best cappuccino and desserts! I've had their tiramisu, warm bread pudding, hazelnut gellato's, fresh mazzorella panini, etc...everything is just amazing and the prices of EVERYTHING is so reasonably affordable. This is the perfect date place. I particularly love sitting outside - with the garden, trees, candles, etc. It's so cozy even if you have a lot other cheezey couples or fun small group of intimate friends with you. YOU WILL LOVE THIS PLACE...and they are open till 3 am!!!!!!!!

Cons: NONE!

Most of the times I was at this cafe, I could hear someone ordering in Italian. It just reminds me of cafes in Europe. Thin crust pizzas are my favorite. Don't miss their dessert and coffee.

Great date place! I took a date here for a late dinner. It was a casual atmosphere, although very romantic. This is great for a first or second date. The small restaurant was almost completely illuminated by candle light. We sat at a cozy small round table near the fireplace. Considering the number of people in the restaurant, it was not really that loud so it accomodated conversation very well. Prior to arrival, I called to see if a weeknight reservation was necessary and the staff indicated that it was not necessary. When we arrived, we were seated immediately. The server was outstanding and when the candle burned out at our table, he replaced it within seconds! The food was very good and the cost was reasonable for NYC.

I've been coming here on and off for the past five years and I have to say that La Lanterna has never, ever dissapointed me. The food is top notch, the service is attentive, and the atmosphere is great. If you' re in New York, you do not want to miss this place.

Stumbled unto this little gem early one saturday afternoon and was thoroughly pleased with the wonderful little backyard. It is so hard to find nice outdoor dining in NYC that it's worth a mention. The food and service were quite pleasant also. I highly recommend you get there soon, before it's becomes too well known.

Say what you will, I still think the best feature of this fantastic restaurant are the four working fireplaces. There's nothing nicer on cold winter's night than to get one of their many hot coffees--with alcohol or without-and snuggle up to that special someone next to one of La Lanterna's many fireplaces (did I mention that they have four!). That's my vote anyway.

I have been coming to La Lanterna since my days at NYU Law and have never been disappointed. The food and coffee are consistently top-notch and the staff is excellent. And with all their recent additions (a jazz bar, and fabulous garden dining) I find that I visit more now than ever. I heartily endorse this NY Institution!

This is definitely the place to take a date when you want to make a lasting impression. I went there last night and the food was great (we had all three lasagnas), the room was dark and romantic, and the jazz spilling out from the bar made the night a hit! My Girlfriend and I stumbled onto this hopping place the other night and had a great time! THe Pizza and wine were excellent-the service too--but what really MADE this place was the backyard dining area. It is one the nicest outdoor restaurants I have ever seen in NY--I am from Italy and this place rivals the ones in my country. They tell me they are going to cover the garden in glass for the winter, so i'm looking forward to going there on a snowy night to enjoy it.Check this place out! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

I love this place.
The ambience is fabulous the food is not excellent but it is a so romantic place, that you spend more time to speak and enjoy the place rather to eat (really), the service as always been excellent, I had one a day a problem with a Calzone, I was not happy, the waiter was arguing but gave me a free glass of wine.
The music bar downstair, is becoming a gem when jazz players and guitar fans comes to this place.

I just read Mocaramel's review and felt compelled to respond. I have been coming here
for years and have nothing but good things to say about the service and the great staff at La Lanterna. Over the years the host, Vittorio, and his crew, have always treated me as family--although with all the business this not-so-little gem does, it amazing he's even able to remember a consistent but not-so-frequent visitor. I've also been amazed at all the new additions in the past few years: A new Jazz Bar, the most fantastic Dining Garden, the Best Thin Crust Pizzas, and now a Lasagna Menu which is to die for (these are not your average lasagnas)! I lOVE THIS PLACE! Keep up the good work guys!

Very romantic fires - I've literally spent hours at Lanterna, drinking wine from their extensive wine and enjoying the ambience. Reasonable prices. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for a first date. Try the chocolate mud cake (warmed) with 2 scoops of dulce de leche gelato. WOW.

I've been wanting to take my long-distance boyfriend there for months. We finally made it there for our 1 year anniversary. The service was wonderful. The waiter was very attentive and friendly. The thin crust pizza is the best I've ever had. The atmosphere is nice but I was surprised as to how loud it was with all the talking, especially since no other reviewer mentioned this. Consequently, it wasn't the most romantic. The strawberry cheesecake was also a disappointment. It was pre-cut and the texture of the strawberry was firm, like it had been sitting in the fridge. Nonetheless, we are looking forward to the next time for more pizza and the great service. Maybe it was an off night. Next time, we'll try downstairs.
