If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I ate in the restaurant once, and the food was definitely not the quality I was hoping for the price. ($14.00 tacos). The other night I decided to order delivery from them since it's a block away from my apartment. 2 hours later it dawned on me that I still had no food in my stomach. I tried calling to check on my order and they hung up on me. Tried calling back and they put me on hold (I hung up after 7 minutes of being on hold). Call back, and they tell me the guy just left on his bike. Since I only live a block away you'd think that he'd be there in approximately 2-5 minutes. 20 minutes later and I was still starving. Call back to ask where my food was and got hung up on YET AGAIN. For $14 tacos, I at least want the food to GET TO MY APARTMENT. It's probably a good thing that I never got my food since the one time I ate there it gave me the runs. Never again.

Unfortunately it is impossible to enjoy a dining experience at this restaurant due to the rude manager and wait staff at this establishment. i attended with a group of 7 experienced diners and we were treated so awful none of us would consider returning. We were forced into a prixe fixe menu which wasn't explained to us when we made the reservations. Their version of prixe fixe required everyone in the party has to agree on 2-3 specific dishes, despite various food requirements, and depending on which level of prixe fixe you are willing to buy. Throughout the course of the dinner, we were rushed repeatedly, they wrote down the wrong reservation time (7:15 instead of 7:30) then lectured us for arriving late even after learning they were the ones to make the mistake. They gave us the check with dessert and refused to offer coffee/tea, and asked us to leave before we started eating the desert. The manager smirked at us when we complained about the treatment and the situation was never rectified. There were so many instances in our evening that we were treated with disrespect for the business we were bringing to the restaurant. I would never recommend a person to eat at this restaurant unless they are masochistic and enjoy being treated with disrespect and disdain while paying the perpetrators. Our group was unable to enjoy our precious time together due to our treatment in this establishment. I implore the reader to spend your money elsewhere and support better run businesses.

Pros: overshadowed by cons

Cons: Rudest Treatment by Manager and Staff Ever!

Cozy little place that is a bit too far from a convenient subway stop. Good tabasco-based cocktail drinks (NOT anything like bloody marys). The tapas are just ok and not quite as flavorful as I would prefer for a small bite.

This is a really cute restaurant in Alphabet City. Had dinner and drinks there with a friend and was completely satisfied with my meal! Absolutely loved their carnitas dish!

My friend had her birthday party here. Upon arrival, we were told that there would be a price fixe of $30 per person for chips, ceviche, and tacos. Not what I might have chosen, but whatever, fine. We were also informed that there would be a price fixe of $30 per person for open bar. When we explained that several people in our group don't drink, we were basically told tough luck -- opting out of open bar was not an option. This was a 40-year old crowd, generally not big drinkers. With the tax, tip, and kicking in for the birthday girl, it was almost $80 per person for tacos and one or two drinks. I feel robbed and angry.

Take a look at the people giving this place 'awesome' ratings -- it seems the vast majority of them have only reviewed this one particular restaurant. Highly suspicious!

Cons: draconian party policies, highway robbery

My friends and I had reservations on Saturday night for 8:30. It was raining, so obviously the outside seating was not an option. We had to wait until 9:30 to sit and we had to stand outside in the rain while waiting for our table due to the tight quarters inside. No apologies, no explanation, nada. The food was yummy, though petite...to put it nicely. Our waitress was nice, but the management is rude.

The restaurant completely lost our reservation and did nothing to accomodate us when we were there. We were told "it should only be 5-10 minutes" three times and finally got fed up and left. I get the sense that they did not lose our reservation but rather did not have the guile to just admit that they were full. Like other bullsh*t NYC restaurants, the policy at Mercadito is to take more reservations than they can honor in order to ensure that they get business. Considering we tried to eat here on a Tuesday, I can only imagine how many frustrated customers wait for their "reservations" on a weekend. Save your money and eat at Papaya Dog instead

We had a terrible experience with the manager of this establishment. He basically erased our reservation and pretended we didnt have one. Never been treated worse in a restaurant.

This place needs a new manager badly and i feel sorry for the people who have to work for him.

Great atmosphere, good food. The guac was amazing. Really nice place. The only problem is that my friends and I were rushed out the door literally as we paid our check. After dropping a solid amount of money on dinner and drinks, I'd expect to be able to finish my drink. Kind of a turn off.

It's a rare dining experience in New York to be ushered into a fun, vibrant scene at no sacrifice to great food and accommodating service. Yet Mercadito accomplishes this balancing act with aplomb, good-heartedness and creativity. Not surprisingly, the drinks, especially the ones laced with peppery bite are like sucking down ice, sweetness and fire - that really leaves you happy and mellow. The fish tacos are great - but I imagine just about everything on the menu is worth trying. I went with a big group and the servers were great and didn't rush us out despite it getting busy. Highly recommended.

This is a great t little restaurant in an even better part of town. I used to live in this neighborhood, and I can't believe I've never gone here. I think it was mostly because there was always a line, and no one wants to wait in line on their own street.

Anyway, best fish tacos I've had in NYC so far. They've got some pretty creative dishes, and the drinks at the bar are a lot of fun. Most importantly the managers there were super cool with getting us seats, despite all the people waiting and all the reservations. Bartender (Mesh?) also knew all about the food, and made some great recommendations.

The restaurant itself is a bit cramped, though there is a big back room. The decor is cool, and it works as a date spot, if you're comfortable with some solid background noise. Tequila will do that.

I brought my family to mercadito after receiving a great recommendation from a friend of mine. He was really right about Mercadito. Since the moment we arrived the staff was very polite and attentive. we ate in the back room and received and excellent service from Marcelo and the rest of the staff. My wife was delighted with the ceviche tasting and my children amazed me because they only want chicken fingers and fries every time we go out but in mercadito they ate everything, is not great? the pollo a la brasa was delicious with that corn pico de gallo. Finally I found a restaurant where I can bring my family without any concerns. In our ride home we could not stop commenting about our great experience at Mercadito. I am looking forward to coming back any time soon. I highly recommend mexican cuisine lovers to give a shot

Do not ever go here very sketchy place!!! My friend's purse was stolen here over dinner and when we realized and told the staff they were extremely uncooperative. They did not help us search the place and were very defensive. The manager didn't even offer to pay for our dinner!! The restaurant is tiny, uncrowded and only people that were ever near us was the staff.....Suspicious, right? Unfortunately for the them, whoever stole her purse used her credit cards and now police is on them. Don't recommend to anyone.

Let me just say that I love Mercadito. While dinning there again last Saturday night I was once again impressed with the food, service, and margaritas. The tacos are my favorite - they may look small - but they are truly wonderful. I am also partial to the strawberry margaritas, but don't order them if you go to the west village location - they're not nearly as good. I was disappointed to see that they changed the menu and replaced the amazing lime and mint carne tacos with a sad substitue. The new tacos are still the same beautifully prepared skirt steak, but now they are served with fried potatoes - some sort of sharp baby french fries that add no flavor. Please, please, please bring back the old carne tacos!!!

I probably would review the place better had i visited in the summer because they have a great outdoor area. We sat inside and they crammed all the tables together. We were also by the door, so people who were waiting hovered over our table waiting for us to leave. The food was great, but expect to spend 30 - 40 per person. I reccommend the chicken platter. The tacos only come with 4 mini tacos.

It is also a traditional mexican restaurant, so the tortillas are corn and everything is made fresh on the spot. I would not reccomend the sangria, waste of $8. The bar is tequila only.

This is my favorite restuarant in the entire east village... great food... amazing drinks... and terrific bartenders.

Ask for Amesh.. he makes the best margaritas in NY....

Their tacos and guacamole are so good... just make sure you get there on time cause it gets packed.

The food in this place isn't bad, but don't go there if you're hungry at all unless you're planning on spending a lot of money. A tacos entree is about USD 14 and you get four tiny tacos with that and the side isn't included (a side of rice & beans is 4.50). Unlike in other mexican restaurants, you don't even get tortilla chips with guacamole or anything like that.
The service is also very bad. The server was rude, and was insisting so we'd order appetizers. When we left, we didn't give a big tip because we weren't happy about the service or the food. When he saw that, he ran after us on the street, so he could get his tip.
Don't believe the other reviews, avoid this place!

Stumbled on this place just walking around the neighborhood. Sat in the back in super cute enclosed garden dining area. They have a lot of awesome flavored margaritas and an amazing guacamole tasting dish. Casula but friendly service and excellent ceviche...would certainly come back!

Had a reservation for 6 people and showed up with 8 - we ended up having to wait a while at the bar, but the manager went totally out of his way to make sure we were having fun and sent us drinks and appetizers to make up for the wait (and some excellent tequila at the end of the meal) - we enjoyed ourselves at the bar, and the food was totally worth the wait. Did the tasting menu, which was a great deal for delicious guacamole, ceviche, tacos and dessert. Would definitely go back. Great atmosphere, wonderful food for a great value, and the service was so gracious. Made for a great night, despite the wait, which was admittedly my fault for not adjusting the reservation.

Recently, I had decided to take some good friends to Mercadito but couldn't remember the address so I had to look it up. I was amazed to read some negative reviews. I felt compelled to write in. I love this place. I always get the guacamole taster, the ceviche taster, fundido, the fish tacos of the day and some other tacos they might recommend. The food is delicious and not cheap! It's a night out and I always figure a few hours because the plates come out one at a time. It's a real experience. And don't forget the magaritas because they are delicious too! Service is casual and not hurried, which I like. One time we had reservations and they couldn't seat us for 45 mins but gave our entire party (8) a round of drinks on the house. This place is the 1st place I think of to take out of towners. Enjoy!

I've eaten here several times and the food is great but the service is God-awful. Thursday night we gave it another shot and left wishing we hadn't. We called ahead to find out what time they closed and were told "our kitchen closes at midnight." We showed up at 11:30 and were told we had to put in an order right now because "the kitchen is like closing, in like 5 minutes." Very condescending, very hurried which I could understand if she came to take our order but we didn't see her for twenty minutes. By then it was too late to get a round of drinks from the bar because last call was at quarter till and "Sorry, I guess I should have told you that. I can get you a beer though." I could get a beer but nothing else? Was the bar closed? Or did they just not want to make a margarita? Our food was thrown down and an attempt was made to clear the food before we were close to done. When they dropped the check we felt ripped off... again. Officially finished with this over priced joint that belongs not in the East Village but maybe the Upper East Side or Westchester.

First off, I am Mexican and grew up in California. I love my mexican food and am very particular when it comes to it.

The Portions were RIDICULOUSLY SMALL. Tacos are 2" in diameter, I'm not exaggerating. For 4 - 2" tacos they charge 13.50. I went home and ate my boyfriends leftover chinese food because i was still hungry.

Ambiance is nice though.

I can't complain about the food, it was all nicely prepared and tasty. I just can't justify paying $13.50 for bite size tacos. That means each 2" taco costs $4 and some change. That's ABSURD!

Our waitress was flighty and left us sitting there for 15 minutes without even taking our drink order. the restaurant hadn't even filled up yet.

Any way. I refuse to go back. Boy do I miss Cali style taco trucks where you can get a decent taco for $1 and some change!!!

NyMag said it had the best fish tacos in the city, while they aren't wrong I wouldn't return simply because of the bad service and unwarranted expense. First my fiance and I were denied a table in the corner due to the fact the tables were reserved, minutes after we were seated the same hostess tried to seat another couple along the wall who then requested the corner table. You could tell the hostess was so frusterated with denying people the only roomy tables in the place she just let them sit there. I ordered a club soda and they brought me a 2 liter bottle of sparking water which I had to decline. We ordered 2 tacos (13.50 each) and a side of plantians (4.50). The one plate of tacos came out within about 2 minutes of ordering and my fiance waited 5 minutes before I insisted he eat them before they were stone cold. Eventually the other tacos and the side came out and they were delicious. The only problem with the food were the portions. I can't exaggerate how small the tacos were. Now, I understand tapas style food, but no tapas costs $13 for 4 bites of fried fish. The $4.5 plantains were about half of a plantain, 5-6 slices. We ordered more food (another taco plate) and this time the food took 25 minutes to arrive. Someone other than our waitress dropped the food and mentioned we had been waiting a long time, I said we had, but I was more interested in eating than complaining at that point. They offered us free dessert which niether of us were interested in and asked for the cheque. I would have thought since we declined dessert (niether of us eat sugar) they would have comped our side or something but nope, instead of something free we were overcharged for the 7 dollar bottle of sparkling water we never ordered in the first place! We still left 20% since the waitress was gracious and none of these problems were her fault (thought she might have voided the water before printing the check). After spending 60$ I went home and ate a bowl of cereal to fill up!

My boyfriend and I took his parents here on a Saturday night. The food was great and we enjoyed the meal, but everything was ruined when a manager approached our table just after we'd paid the bill and asked us to get up so that they could seat another party. I have never had this happen to me before, regardless of how busy a place was, and I was mortified. A little basic curtesy on their part (or a more diplomatic solution, ie buying us a drink at the bar) should have been used. Or they simply could have waited five minutes.

I was born and raised in Mexico and i have never seen tacos this small in my entire life. Chef was not flexible at all and didn't want to combine the order of tacos (although all these fillings for tacos have to be prepared in advance). Only regular coffe and a weird super sweet mix they call "tres leches coffee" (inexistant in Mexico). No capuccino, no cafe con leche, not even tea of any kind!!! I ordered huevos rancheros to the "obviously non mexican waitress" and she didn't know what i was talking about. Extremely expensive place and not worth it at all. Whatever i had for brunch was NOT mexican. The only mexican thing in there was the tequila at the bar and the bus boy who helped me communicate with the waittress that had no idea of what mexican cusine ingredients are. Just go to La Palapa (St. Marks and First Ave) and have the real deal for same or even less money..................(punishment to me for betraying my favorite restaurant in town)

I have read the other reviews here, and sympathize with the disappointed few. The restaurant is small and I can understand that the management is antsy about the seating. We were lucky enough to come early and find a table quickly, even though we did have folks seated very close to us in a few minutes, something I don't mid, but some people do. The food is absolutely excellent! The drinks are very good too. We didn't find any problems with the service, and I am a stickler for service.

There is a very particular experience here. You must be ready for a tight space, some crowd noise (less if you can get a table up front) and plates of food that are meant to be shared. You will find the tacos in groups of four. The Chili Rellenos as one pepper, but it is all fantastic. Expect to spend about $50 per person, and expect to enjoy every bite! If you are a mexican food fan. I highly recommend Mercadito.

If you like eating tacos in one bite, this is the place for you! This place has lots of bite-sized dishes. While I'm not going to say the portions are small, I am going to say that the portions are not big. That being said, they are also delicious and I grudgingly admit that they're worth it. The guacamole sampler is also great.

After having read a rave review in New York Magazine and receiving a recommendation from a waiter at a neighbohood restaurant, I ventured to Alphabet City w/ high hopes. My bf and I ordered way too much food, but wanted to be able to provide an accurate review of the place and provide good recos to our friends and fam.

Strawberry Margaritas were amazing! They use fresh fruit, no juices. Avoid the guacamole, we tried the sampler (mango, pineapple, and regular), liked the regular the most, but found it mediocre. Ceviche is decent, I'm not into raw food, but my bf is and he quite enjoyed the scallop ceviche. Go for the fish tacos! I'm not sure I would give it a "best" rating, but I haven't had any fish tacos that have rivaled theirs yet in the city. Chicken Picadas were amazing! Even the steak picadas were good, but when combined w/ the crispy tortilla, guacamole, and sour cream it did not stand out. I picked out the steak and ate it on its own and quite enjoyed it. We did not have ANY room for dessert.

Great food, abominable service. Nothing's worse than having a fine meal, getting slightly tipsy on yummy margaritas, and then waiting 45 minutes for a check. It destroys the buzz! First, they told us that the "system" was down. Then, the manager finally arrived to fix it and he said "we are so backed up!" -- a lie. When you charge so much for those tiny tacos (even if they are good) you should be able to produce a check and get the machine to charge someone's credit card. I mean isn't that an important part to running a restaurant -- taking the customer's money!?

The only thing that was worth eating was their guacamole. The margaritas and service were pretty bad. If you decide to visit El Mercadito, I would recommend checking your bill before you pay. They tried to overcharge me twice - first when I paid for the drinks and then when I paid for the food. In addition, the back room is extremely loud making it very difficult to have a conversation. My suggestion: Go to a more authentic restaurant and enjoy better service and a nicer meal.

ercadito has to be one of the best restaurants in the city. The service was excellent and the food and drink was just as good. If you like Sangria, try the white wine Sangria. Food wise, try the three favor Guacamole. Cant say enough about it. As far as East Village dining goes, this is not one to miss. You wont be disappointed.

When you long to be on a beach in Mexico with a fish taco in your hand and sand under your feet (which lets face it you do right now) this is the next best thing. Super fresh ceviche and small tacos will take you straight there. All the salsas and tortillas, down to the chips are prepared there by hand. The mango chipotle guac will have you licking the bowl and while the portions seem small at first, I followed the server's recommendations and left completely satisfied with the taste of these amazing mushroom tostadas lingering in my mouth. The jamaica margartia is perfect. And don't miss the coconut flan.

I walked into an empty restaurant at six on a weeknight and the host gave me a hard time about arriving before my other friend. I understand about not seating a party before everyone arrives, but the restaurant is small and I was the only person there. He also wanted me to call and find out where she was, nervous about people who had reservations. As if they were about to be swamped with 6:30 reservations. I did call my friend, but to tell her to meet me somewhere else.

We were seated late, and then told there was a time limit on our table. The service was exceptionally slow, and then we were asked (in an extremely condescending way) to leave before we even finished our meal!

The food is fine, but there are many infinitely better options for Latin fare in the area.

Those who don't require a bridge and/or tunnel to reach Mercadito are in for a real treat - great food, attentive service, and excellent margaritas in a small but charming East Village spot. This is a TAPAS restaurant. It says it on the menu and the servers explain it to you as soon as you sit down so I'm surprised by how many people on this site complain about the portion sizes. If you follow the servers' recommendations and order several dishes to share with your table you're in for some intense flavors from both the food and drinks. When we had to wait 15 minutes for our reservation on a busy Saturday night they offered up a free round of drinks and a trio guacamole appetizer at the bar. This is not a burrito place. Those looking for something a bit more creative are sure to enjoy.

I was going to write this review in spanish because I want my people from Mexico to know that there's a great authentic Mexican restaurant in NYC. I am Mexican and the food is unbelievably good. Started with a Pepino margarita and followed it with a guacamole tasting (mango is out of this world), then our waitress recommended the ceviche tasting, we tried the ceviche de pulpo, camaron, and robalo...they're so good that you'll end drinking the broth at the end. Of course we ordered some tacos, we tried the tacos de camaron, they are amazing!!! and finally we finished with the tacos al pastor, very very very authentic !! THANK YOU MERCADITO FOR BRINGING REAL MEXICAN FOOD TO NYC.

Marcadito has potential but it's way too expensive for the neighborhood. The margueritas are very good but for $8.50 they are on the small side without enough tequila. The ceviche had way too much onion which masked the flavor of the fish. The tacos were good but really tiny. The space is small and the backroom smells damp. This restaurant would be great if it were cheap but it is not in fact, it is on the pricier side of any Mexican restaurant I have ever been to.

service was terrible. guacamole is way below average standard. margaritas are expensive & not great. tacos were overwhelmed by sauce. ceviche was described as 'spicy' and came out with a sweet orange sauce. waited over an hour and a half on a not crowded night for entrees. this was my 2nd time here, shoulda stuck with my decision after the first time & never gone back... SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME/$ and avoid this restaurant. you'll thank me later.

I have heard so much about mercadito and everything was true. People have said that the portions are small, but our server told us exactly what to order. Yes, one plate would be to small for anyone, but the idea is to share. We started with the best Guacamole that I've ever eaten. We ended with shrimp tacos and baked oysters. It was incredible. We left feeling just right, except that the margarita can catch up to you. I love when service is interactive. If you go, take their advice.

I understand tapas are small portions, but this was ridiculous. I went for Saturday brunch, and was still really hungry after my meal. I ordered the steak tortillas. The "entree" was comprised of 4 small tortillas for $10. To my disappointment, each tortilla was about 3 inches in diameter, and had about 3-4 REALLY small cubes of steak. Granted the steak and guacamole were tasty, it wasn't worth $10. I've been to other nice tapas restaurants in NYC in much better neighborhoods, and the avg price was about $7 - $8. And the kicker was the price for coffee. I'm not talking about specialty coffee or anything, just the regular drip coffee. It's been a long time since I've been to a restaurant that charges per cup of coffee for brunch. Each "refill" was $2.50 per cup. After a long night, my coffee bill was more than my tapas bill...

Amazing in every sense of the word, the tacos are the best noth of the border, try the steak tacos & the beer battered fish tacos. The shrimp ceviche & octopus ceviche are the best. The handmade quesadillas are just delicious. The tampiquena steak entree is really good. Try the tequila mojitos or the cucumber margarita. Great idea, tequila bar only, who doesn't like margaritas? Brunch is probably one of the best in the city. I have been there at least 25 times, try it.

You have to remember this place isn't inexpensive necessarily, the plates may each only be $10, but it's tapas style, so you have to order a lot to get full. Everyone gets a bite of everything, that's the whole point. People who understand this initially won't have any issue with the restaurant. The food is great, and being from California it's hard to impress me with Mexican. The sangria is delicious and the service is prompt. Also, servers are very knowledgeable and seem to have the answers to any question you might have about a dish. Definitely try the mango guacamole and the shrimp tacos!

For anyone who doesn't get it, small plates doesn't mean skimpy portions, it means small plates for tasting lots of different things. This is a restaurant concept that has taken off and something you can either embrace or not. The servers are very specific when you order, so there is no confusion. Mercadito has done a wonderful job, bringing authentic mexican dishes and fantastic drinks (the mojito was the BEST I have ever had) to the East Village. Also recommended: shrimp ceviche, the guacamole tasting (OH MY GOD!) and the calamari tacos. Foodies will be in heaven here.

aybe the portion sizes are on the small size, but coming from a person that has absolutely no portion control, I appreciated it. 4 tacos per plate and they are mini tacos, but just order a few things for the table and you are able to try many items on the menu. The guac tasting menu should not be missed it consists of regular guac, pineapple guac, and a mango version all excellent. I liked the fact that when I left I didnt feel overstuffed and nauseous, as I usually do after binge-fests at other Mexican restaurants. The ritas are great, kinda small but lots of versions to try. And Mercadito is the only place I have ever been that offers Low-carb margaritas. Its about time that someone did that. Ambience, small and cozy, but lively at the same time.

I always love to try new places, but after this experience I think I'll wait a while before trying anywhere I dont personally know. The food was average at best, whatever food you actually got!!! I am not exaggerating when I say that me and my girlfriend, after spending nearly $40 each, walked out of this place HUNGRY!! I think someone has to remind the management that this is Mexican food not French!!

The menu is very decieving when it comes to the portions. Service was poor. Dont waste your time with this place unless you feel like getting ripped off!!
