So what is the secret of Numero 28 success? Simple - the restaurant produces pizzas using only natural and fresh ingredients, and it employs tried and traditional methods for preparing and raising the pizza dough. This combination of the great and the good has earned Numero 28 a 'Pizza DOC' stamp of approval. The DOC is to pizza what DOC is to wine - a signature of quality awarded by a central body. The pizzas are not just loved by the people of the Village; in fact they have drawn the attention of the Italian glitterati as well as a few international big hitters.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
There's no mystery as to the specialty here: A brick oven entirely dominates one room while the black-and-tan dining room features the history of pizza scrawled on one wall. Ceiling fans lazily whir, echoing the pace of the casual service and young, dressed-down clientele.

The Food
The pies here are purely Neapolitan, which means baked hot and fast with a thin, chewy, smoky crust. There's no better model than the Bufalina D.O.C., topped with creamy buffalo mozzarella and a sauce bursting with fresh tomato flavor. The staff loves to recommend the pizza alla pere for its unique blend of pear, gorgonzola and walnuts. But while it's easy to become attached to the pies, don't overlook the lasagna with meaty bechamel sauce, the piadine (pizza bread) stuffed with arugula, mozzarella and prosciutto, and especially the zeppole, tiny, grape-sized rounds lightly dusted with powered sugar--a world apart from the familiar street-fair doughnuts.

Key Points

  • Pizza by the Meter
  • Heart of the West Village
  • Live Sports Entertainment

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - No slices here: The pizza comes in 12-inch rounds, or 18-inch or 29-inch oblongs fit for the whole gang.
  2. Where to Sit - The sidewalk tables provide a spot to watch the eclectic Village crowd waltz by.

Terrible service

by Exiledwasp

Ordered a pizza an hour before close yesterday, phone twice to ask where it was, was told it was 20 minutes away, then told almost there...it never came, when I called back a third time to enquire, there was no answer...would love to have rated the food for this delivery but cannot do so. Terrible service.

Pros: Last time the pizza actually came, it was quite good

Cons: Pizza didn't come, nobody answered phone

Excellent Pizza

by D Tobias

The margrhita reginella di bufala is outstanding! It is an authentic italian pizza cooked to perfection (most of the time). I don't put topings on so I cannot comment). Bottom line, its a great pizza which is endorsed by the fact that its full of Italians eating there. However, it is expensive for what you get (pizza size is ok but is $16-18 per person and a soda goes for $3). The seating is atrocious and is VERY hard to get in and out of seat and you are stuffed in next to other people (in fact the people next to us just up and left as it was to tight).
So great pizza but not a great experience. Worth it once or twice.

Pros: Excellent Pizza

Cons: Overpriced and Cramped

Excellent even by Italian standards

by Elena Collerica

I am Italian and I have been in North America for 12 years. All Along I have been desperately trying to find REAL pizza, simple, tasty, with REAL mozzarella, cooked in a wood burning oven. By now I had given up, resigned to the idea that I could have real pizza only on my trips back to Italy. Well, last Sunday I have finally found it in North America too! In New York city.

Me and my husband were strolling in the West Village when I saw the wood burning oven and the pizza on the tables. It looked so real that I made my husband hang around for another few hours, until supper time. Then we went back to No. 28 and had our pizza. Finally! It was real, real real. It would make the cut even in Italy and believe me this is the first time I make such a claim in the 12 years I have been missing my beloved pizza.
Thank you No. 28, I will spread the rumor among my Italian friends!

Pros: A real pizza with a real wood burning oven!

Cons: slightly ndewrcooked

Superb, authentic Italian pizza

by Marco33

This small restaurant hits it out of the ballpark everytime. Excellent food, service and atmosphere. It's the closest I've felt to Italia since I've been here. The real deal. Bravi tutti.

GREAT PIZZA!

by ti88

As of today, the best pizza we found in town. It?s possible to have the traditionally shaped pizza as well as a pizza long 18? or 29? inches. Right in the center of the old Little Italy, the one that tourists don?t experience.

Pros: Pizza

Cons: Tv screen

$27 for subpar pizza

by cmcgogney

I cannot believe this place won Best of New York. The pizza was, at best, okay. First of all an 18-inch thin crust pie cost $27, which is unbelievably overpriced, especially considering the pizza was average. While the toppings were good, this was the thinnest crust pizza I have ever had. Basically a slice of pizza is like a cracker with a thin layer or sauce and cheese. Additionally, the pizza was overly salty and the cheese was pretty much non-existent.

I would NOT recommend this place at all. There are so many better choices in NY. I really can't believe this place won.

Pros: Location

Cons: Very High Price, Small Servings, Salty Pizza

BEST IN NYC BY FAR!!!

by knocks

Have not tried any places in BK or Staten but have tried the other great places on most top 10 lists in the city. No 28 is by far the best. Perfect combination of fresh sauce, not too much great tasting mozarella cheese and a perfectly prepared slightly charred thin crust! Service was good even though the place was packed to the gills. Only shortcoming of the place to me is that they don't serve draft beer. Thin crust pizza perfection!

Pros: THE PIZZA!

Cons: No draft beer.

The best brick oven pizza Ive ever had

by bananspltya

Last night I enjoyed a 29 inch pie with my family and I thought it was the best brick oven pie Ive ever tasted. The sauce was definitely the best ever. the cheese also extremely good. the crust was crucnchy and a little burnt on the edge. over it was very good. We also stopped a t famous joes just down the street which was very good, maybe just as good or better depending on what type of pizza you prefer. numero 28's sauce was definatlet the best even over joes. great pizza!

Pros: best brick oven pizza and sauce

Cons: 20 minute wait

Best Pizza (#1) in NY and that I have ever tasted (EXCELLENT/OUTSTANDING) along with the best service and friendliest staff...

by kdouglas100

I was hanging out and drinking socially in the Greeenwich Village area on a beautiful Sunday @ Greenwich Village Bistro. As I was talking to the bartender (Brian) and owner (Carla) at Greenwich Village Bistro about my experiences with pizza in NY that were disappointing, they highly recommended No. 28. I explained that I was very picky and a restaurant critic but they insisted that this was the real deal...gourmet and first class pizza. They practically demanded that I go and try it so my friend and I changed our mind since they were so passionate about this restaurant by deciding not to go to a "famous" steakhouse.

When we walked into the restaurant, we were promptly greeting by the staff and the server got to our table to take a drink order within a minute after sitting down, she was very friendly (This was the first time this has happened in NY. Normally, we have to wait 7-12 minutes after sitting...average 10 minutes to be greeted by the server.) and outstanding SERVICE. She guided my friend through their decision but I immediately saw a pizza pie (Rustica) that I could not wait for it to touch my sensitive and picky palate.

The pizzas were delivered and WOW.."AMAZING, EXCELLENT, OUTSTANDING." The pizzas had a light, thin and deliciously crispy crust along with fresh toppings (roasted bell peppers, sausage, basil, pepperoni and etc..) and the mouth watering burst of flavor from the tomato sauce mixed with the Buffalo Mozzarella imported from Italy...melted in my mouth but also music to my mouth. I was absolutely speechless that we had stumbled upon this "Outstanding Restaurant." The prices were very reasonable especially considering the quality of the premium products on their "Pies of Heaven."

I cannot say this enough..If you love pizza, this will be your home away from home. The food is honestly the best. I cannot stop thinking about the pizza pies (# 1 Pizza along with outstanding service in NY. "Momma Mia"

Much Love,
Kenneth

Pros: Pizza, Food, Service, Friendly Staff, Price for Quality and Portion, Ambience

Cons: Really no Cons when the food is this great....just get there and taste the magic!!

Out of the way gem.

by 2020jefft

This place is so unassuming I first noticed it last nite after living in the neighborhood 7 years. What a treat! Great, thinthin crust pizza. Top notch sauce and cheese. Crispy, "charred edge" crusts. And delightful service. Only (minor) issue: wine pour could be more generous. Worth a detour! Like the Village used to be.

Pros: best pizza

Cons: none

Authentic Italian Pizzeria

by dpezza02

Stopped in No. 28 randomly last Saturday. The Milan football match was on the TV, and the place was full of beautiful Italians following the game. The pizza (ordered prosciutto cotto and mushroom) was just like I've had in Italy; paper-thin crust, not too much sauce or cheese. After the meal, our waiter (also Italian) offered us chocolate and marscapone cake that the proprietress made herself, and which she personally delivered to the table. One could tell it was home-made and we enjoyed it thoroughly. Will definitely return when I'm pining for la patria, or just want a real Neopolitan pizza.

Pros: Pizza, Italians

Superb pizza, decent pasta too!

by kimber111

Quaint, comfortable setting tucked away on Carmine. Sometimes slow service is more than made up for by true quality pies. Staff is attentative to requests though consistency is sometimes not spot on - still fares far better than many alternatives.

Pros: Superb pizza! quaint setting/rustic

Cons: sometimes slow

Good Pizza

by rubicks13

Went there with my brother saturday night. Needed reservations. Ordered #3 29" pizza
Had appetizer buffalo moz with tomatoes very good. Pizza had ok cheese to sauce ratio, could have used a little more cheese. Also pizza could have had a little less crust and more cheese and sauce to the edges. Great flavor with added grated cheese and EVOO. Overall not bad, price a little steep for the pizza. The 29" pizza is exactly 29" but only about 6-7inches across.
All in all a nice treat good atmosphere very nice waiter staff. Wines are a bargian too! Most bodies all under $25.00 which unheard of for the city.

Pros: Wine list, great taste

Cons: little high in price.

It's a perfect pizza party!

by sarax

Numero 28 went out of their way to arrange a perfect pizza birthday party! They generously accomodated our group of 11 in their intimate space and provided a fabulous tirimisu cake! The pizza was delicious, the service was excellent and we even got treated to special after-dinner drinks (apparently good for digestion) on the house! We will certainly go back to this special place in the future!

Pros: comfortable, nice atmosphere, flexible servers

Awesome Pizza!

by robertbianco

Went here on a recommendation from a friend who found this while walking through the Village. The ambiance was very casual and relaxed. The service was very attentive. Most of all the pizza was absolutely awesome! This is not one of your run of the mill "by the slice" places. This pizza is the real deal. All the ingredients were fresh and it tasted very authentic. Reminded me of when my wife & I were in Italy.

A Most Go!!!

by solesito

A couple of friends of mine stopped by this place last night and we had an incredible time. The food was magnificent! They had all sorts of good quality toppings. Our favorite was the San Danielle and the Pear with Gorgonzola. I read the review below and I would definitely say to disregard it, we had great service. They were very attentive with us and not to mention everyone else there it was fantastic because they all spoke Italian and that made everything even better. It was like being in Italy!!! I would definitely give them two thumbs up and recommend it to all.

Pros: Food, Price, Ambiance

Cons: Cash Only

"worst service ever"

by aslightdilemma

As the table beside ours was on their way out they muttered about the horrible service, we should have heeded their warning.. We had a party of six, sat ourselves out on the sidewalk after waiting, waited for menus, waited another 10 minutes to order, then-after 15 minutes- our dishes proceeded to come out once every 10 minutes. One of my friends would finish and then another would receive their plate. The waitress was borderline deaf or completely ignoring everyone around her. The food wasnt bad, and somewhat reasonably priced but it made us realize how important good (or at least sufficient) service is. I would not eat here again, our table had a substantial bill yet the waitress did not seem to care at all. You could go elsewhere for the same food and get better service.

Pros: food

Cons: WORST SERVICE EVER, portions

Straight from Naples!

by angelfirenze

I've tried almost every italian rest in NY - and nothing can compare to No.28. The food and not to mention their pizza is unreal. I went there with some friends the other night and while we were there we met Salvatore, the pizzaiolo, who is not your typical pizzaman, he has so much character and personality, no wonder his pizza is incredible. I would reccomend this place to everyone. and while you are there try the Margharita DOC(Salvatore's speciality-not on menu) and their Zepolies!!!

Pros: moderate price, excellant food

Cons: cash only

the most delicious pizza in new york

by foodismyfavorite

The pizza at No. 28 is made in a wood fired brick oven(hard to find in NYC), the crust is thin and crispy. My two favorite pizzas are the Daniele which is made with a tasty simple tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella cheese, fresh arugula and prosciutto di parma on top sprinkled with a little parmigiano and amazing olive oil from their family's grove in Italy. My other favorite is called pizza patata featuring thinly sliced potatoes, fresh ricotta, fresh rosemary and walnuts. Everyone at the restaurant is friendly, there are always people screaming in Italian, you can watch Luigi the pizzaoilo make the pizza in front of the oven... This place is great for birthday's, a nice date or hanging with your friends... It's like going to an Italian home!

Pros: near W4- ACE BDFV

Cons: cash only
