Although I live only a few blocks away the food took over a 40 minutes to arrive after the order was placed. The entree received wasn't what was ordered. When I called to tell them that my order was wrong, I got a bunch of attitude over the phone. The delivery man, who was very nice, came back with the correct order, however, everything was fairly bland and tasteless.

Cons: The guy who took the order over the phone was incompetent.

I was missing my family on Mothers day and I was impressed by the menu and the fact that it is named after a grandmother. Birdie is rolling in her grave. The Fried chicken was awful. The greens tasted like unseasoned grass. The Yams tasted like carrots with some brown sugar sprinkled on them and were inedible. The mac and cheese was okay but Ive had better from a box. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I had to throw it all away. I really wanted to become a regular but I will never go back. I would give zero stars if I could. The nicest thing that I can say is that the girl who took my order was really sweet.

This place is great. The food is fresh and has a very clean taste too it (for those who are concerned about fat, salt etc). Get the baked chicken all white meat (comes boneless). Have some mashed potatoes and some muffins. The food is on the blander side, but that is how I like it....if you want salt, MSG, faux flavor go to KFC or Dallas BBQ. Very good. Although they have very limited dining, it's more of a take-out place. It's also family owned, which is cool. The sides are kinda small, so get a large if you want a bigger serving.

Pros: Great Food

Cons: Side Orders are separate and a bit small for the price

yum! the big juicy fried drumsticks are my fav, but they have all kinds of other chicken on the menu (baked, hot wings., veggie...) the lemonade is interesting in a good way. try it.

the guy there who i think is the owner is so super sweet & friendly, i almost wanted to give him a hug on my way out, and am genuinely disappointed whenever he's not there.

the decor is supercute & very cozy. the collage placemats on the tables or the old movie playing on the tv will keep you entertained while you wait for your food.

I could not disagree more with the negative comments written below! I read that bad review and immediately had to sign up to write just how wrong they are! I absolutely LOVE the food at Birdie's! I live one block away and come in to eat there at least once a week! :) Mmm.. The food has been awesome each and every time! They have several different kinds of chicken (my favorite being the lemon pepper) and all are SO moist, tasty, and juicy! I'm craving it just thinking about it! They also give a good amount of food for the price.. I've gone with a group of 5 before where we all get our own 3-piece chicken and then order a whole bunch of sides, and we can't believe how cheap it comes out for how much food we get! My favorite sides are the yams (made with molasses.. not too sweet at all.. just right!), the collard greens (made without ham, has a lovely smokey flavor, and there's practically no oil at all on them), the green beans (made with garlic and pepper... yum!), and the creamed spinach (not too heavy at all.. just right!). Let's not forget about the desserts! If you go, please be sure to leave room for the apple crumb pie because it's the BEST i have ever had! It's not too sweet, the crust is thin and flaky, and it's so moist and oozing(!) with a wonderful crumb top... Seriously amazing pie! Plus, the banana pudding and sweet potato pie are delish too! Nothing is too sweet at all.

The owner is incredibly nice, and I am happy to give him my business (and all my friends that come to my neighborhood). Seriously, i don't understand the bad review below, so go try Birdie's and see for yourself that they have delicious food that's not too heavy. I always leave thinking that I can't wait to eat there again! Oh, and they have great salads too! :-)

If you are reading this and you KNOW about REAL Southern Soul Food -- this is for you. Actually, it is for anyone reading this. I am warning you to NEVER try this place. Me and my friends decided to try Birdies last night. The place is a hole-in-the wall -- tooo small. And, it was PACKED. We thought "hey, the food must be good if it is this packed!"

Boy were we WRONG!!! Firstly we had to wait more than 30 minutes for our food to go. My friends ordered the fried chicken, and I ordered the oven-baked chicken, which, on their menu touts that they use a Cajun spice rub on it. Each meal was $5.95, and does not come with ANY sides. The sides -- for the small -- was $3.50. Totally not worth it. For sides we had yams, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes. My friend also ordered banana pudding (which they forgot to put in or bag).

My oven-baked chicken looked like oven-baked FRIED chicken .... like they dipped it in yogurt, then in crushed corn flakes.

There was absolutely NO flavor or seasoning .... NONE!!! It was bland as hell! The meat was DRY ... and tough!!! Some of the meat was pink on the inside -- very unappealing!
The mashed potatoes were just OK, but clearly the better of the bunch. I was LIVID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My friends' fried chicken looked good on the outside, but the same story applies: dry and NO FLAVOR! The yams had way too much cinnamon. As for the mac and cheese --- they should be ashamed of themselves!! That stuff was inedible! We had a taste, and then tossed it out of our mouths!! Was that even cheese?? It was gross.

Please do not go to this place ... not if you are expecting really good comfort food. I'm amazed at the review saying that Birdies has the best fried chicken in NYC. Do not believe that hype because it is utter BS!

If you want some really good cuisine, go to Maroons in Chelsea. They have Southern and Jamaican cuisine. Or, venture Uptown to Amy Ruth's. Their chicken and waffles are famous!
