On August 25, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents arrested Matthew Soto, co-owner and daily manager of Bark & Play, a dog-boarding and day-care facility in Brooklyn, NY. Soto has been charged with five counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty for severely neglecting several dogs boarded at the kennel.

The investigation began in late June after ASPCA Agents discovered that the facility was housing dogs in extremely unsanitary conditions. The animals were left unattended in poorly ventilated areas saturated with urine and feces. Two underweight Pit Bull mixes named Tango and Sweets were transported to the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, where they were treated for severe urine burns as well as other conditions of neglect. Dr. Robert Reisman, ASPCA Medical Coordinator of Animal Abuse Cases, provided emergency veterinary treatment.

I just have to say that I don't understand how anyone in their right mind could have left their animal at this place. Even if the owners are the best actors in the world, anyone with half a brain should have seen the writing on the wall and never left their animal here. Animal abuse happens so often not only because of the sick people in the world, but because of the stupid people in the world that allow the sick people to abuse animals. Anyone that allowed their animal to be left here is seriously STUPID and frankly, you shouldn't even have a pet. Please I beg you NEVER decide to have a child.

I don't live in the east coast, I live in California. However, I am a member of ASPCA and was emailed an "ALERT" regarding "Bark and Play" in Brooklyn, NY. Yes...they SHUT THEM DOWN!! The owner "Mathew Soto" and the daily manager (who ever that is...) were arrested on Aug. 25th and charged with 5 counts of animal cruelty and so the investigation paid off! Anyone who knows anything about the neglect and negative experiences they've ever received at this place...please come forward and notify the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement and be a witness for the prosecution. Let's get rid of the trash in our society and put these people behind bars where they belong!! For those of you...(I read the reviews) that had a "wonderful" experience, well...if I were you, I'd thank god that your animals were not hurt. It's sad how you only see the front of these places and the front that these employees put on. Please do your part!

Well it seems that the owner got busted for animal cruelty and neglect and for that I hope you lose your license and shut your establishment down you piece of crap! Mr. Sotto really needs to learn that dogs need to be cared for so why does he even have this business?

i was one of the witnesses to the horrible abuse and neglect last week.there were over 20 dogs found in their own waste.emaciated and many with sores.some were in steel cages where they were unable to even stand up straight.some of the dogs even cracked their own teeth trying to chew their way out.this was a "boarding facility" that was payed to care for these dogs.it was quite apparent that nobody had set foot in that back room to feed, water or walk any of the dogs.i prefer to remain anonymous.but what i witnessed brought me to tears.in my opinion.this is a felony cruelty case.the owners of these dogs entrusted bark and play with them and they failed miserably!!

The ASPCA has shut this place down. We are looking for people who worked there to come forward with evidence in a criminal investigation they are doing. Please email me at NYChomelessPets@gmail.com if you worked there in the last 3 months.

Last week, I learned from a disgruntled that there was a DEAD rescue dog in the back room for DAYS, which explained the increasingly putrid, rotting smell.

We took our dog to Bark and Play daycare for over three years, and up until about 6 months ago it was great. When Matthew Soto took over from the previous owner, the facility rapidly went downhill, and the good and caring employees, like Xavier, started to quit. Our dog began exhibiting strange behavioral problems and coming home with large scrapes and scratches, much worse than can be explained away as as normal dog play.

New employees are very rough and rude and DO NOT CLEAN up after the dogs. The smell really became overwhelming and our dog would come home reeking of urine and feces. The front door is never opened, even in the heat, to provide fresh air. The dogs are forced to breathe disgusting, stagnant air all day long. I can only imagine what damage this must do to a dog??s sensitive nose.

Employees also obviously sleep in the facility overnight because it often takes 3-4 rings for them to answer in the morning, and even then wearing nothing but socks and pajama bottoms, obviously just awoken. More than once, when I picked up my dog in the evening, there was a group of three or more non-employees hanging around either in front of the entrance smoking or in the office area. It is obvious that employees completely ignore the dogs.

Please email me at "boycottbandp at gmail dot com" for further details. And please help us protect the health of our beloved pets by boycotting Bark & Play!!

If you've never been to a doggie daycare place before, it seems great. The dogs run and play all day. However, this place has some serious issues to consider:

1. The contract to provide care for your dog states that, if you default on your payments, they can seize your dog! What if your child's summer camp or boarding school could kidnap your child??

2. Understaffed. I would frequently see that there was one person between the dog floor and the "office", which was just on the other side of the glass from the dogs. The guy would have to leave the room of like 25 dogs to answer a call or to take a dog being dropped off - while the office just sounded like a din of barking dogs.

3. Inadequate facilities. Most quality day care places have private quarters to rest or eat in. This one only has I think two rooms, set aside for mainly dog testing or training, but no intentionally private kennels for them.

4. Unsafe transportation. Their idea of "pickup" is to pile ten dogs into a van, with no harnessing or other safety protection. I saw one dog hop out of the van while they were putting another in. It's only time before one of them gets hit by oncoming traffic.

Please do yourself a favor and opt for a quality dog sitter instead - especially for boarding.

Pros: The dogs do enjoy it

Cons: not enough supervision or privacy - and evil policies

Another lady and I saw a Bark and Play van in the 90 degree sun with 12 dogs locked inside. When the driver returned 20 minutes later, he told me he did not "give a ****" about the dogs. Six useless calls to the Bark and Play office revealed to me that nobody there "gives a ****" about dogs.

i want my dog to be safe, and would NEVER leave her in the care of people like that.

!!!!!!!WARNING!!!!!! IF YOU LOVE YOUR DOG DON'T TAKE IT HERE!!!!...Left my dog there while on vacation. Came back it was so skinny I could see his rib cage and he was very timid and afraid. He got into a "friendly fight" and was cut on his back and some of his face. They just minimized this. When I called during my vacation they said that he was doing great, yeah right! Do yourself a favor and find another place...

My poodle Scruffy loves it here. I was a little iffy about this place because of the reviews that I read but I decided to take a chance on the place. The Staff was really helpful about me leaving my dog there for the weekend. When I came back, She seemed happier than ever playing with the little dogs. I now drop my dog off there every day. I recommend bark and play to anyone that needs a safee enviroment for your dog to have fun.

My little zoey went to Bark and Play and I as a parent was incredibly nervous. My husband had found the place and said it all checked out but I was still sad and nervous to leave my little fluffer muffin. All I know is that when we got back to pick her up she was the happiest dog ever and not in the sense that she wanted to leave Bark and Play. She just seemed relaxed, like she was on a super fun relaxing vacation. Everyone was accomodating, friendly and incredibly professional. It is definitely worth the money, which I thought was pricey... We will be back again soon, thank you Bark and Play for everything!

I had taken my little tea cup poodle Itsy to Bark and Play and now have recently brought my kitty to them too! Let me tell you! There staff is so nice and caring! you can tell they really love what they do there! not only do both of my pets look absolutely great but they are very happy too! I would definitely recomend for anyone to go to Bark and Play! Before this I have been told only how out of control my little Itsy has always been. I know she's very difficult but it usually is worst when people dont know how to handle her. This last week I got to watch part of Itsy's groom take place! I was thrilled at the way they handled her! So I have to say once again!

We have brought our dog here for many visits. Both daytime (day care) and several days (over nights included). Overall we've had a positive experience with Bark and Play. The facility is very clean, the staff is friendly and when we bring in our pup they always remember him and he gives them a kiss. He gets super excited when we walk in the door because he knows he is going to play with other dogs all day long. Our dog has always come home happy and very tired from playing all day. We have never had any problems. I would recommend this facility (and have) to friends.

you could see my reasons and story as comments on "truth1212"'s post... (had to do it in sections bec my response was too large- sorry)

anyways this is what else i had to say.

i suggest places like evas play pups (theyre "OK") in brooklyn, pup culture in nyc (theyre small, and only take medium/small dogs but theyre amazing), purr n pooch in NJ (fancy cool and fun place) camp bow wow in staten island (huge huge facility, awesome staff and live camper cameras that you could watch for free... this is my top reccomendation). i mean, id even suggest biscuits and bath (there are many in the city) if you work in the city and can take the dog w/u during the day to drop it off there. there are also a bunch of places out in nj. now mind you, i know for daycare those arent options because of the far drive. however for boarding which to me is the most important, bec when youre out of town you want to be able to know your dogs are safe! (hence camp bow wow being the best cuz you could see your dog all day on the cameras).... there are tons of places, and in my opinion, bark n play is the worst one out there.

My dog was brought here in order to get a haircut and a bath because her hair was getting really lengthy, she was amazingly nearly still for the entire time and they didn't have trouble with her meaning that the people were really nice or else they wouldn't have been able to handle her. They were nice to me and my dog and I would go back again!

Jerimy is awesome, and his classes are the best way to get your dog off on the right foot.

Both of our dogs went through his classes and we can't recommend them highly enough! The dogs learn a lot, of course, and have an excellent opportunity to be socialized with other dogs their own age.

But the best part of the classes was learning about how dogs think and interact with other members of their pack -- training ourselves to avoid the typical puppy-training pitfalls.

After reading reviews ( unfortunately after boarding my 2 dogs here) I was glad that they had no lasting effects of what may have been a horrible time. I used B & P in 2007 with just the one dog and I believe one of the owners was there and it seemed organized and cleaner. In 2008 I left the 2 dogs so they would also have each others company. The second dog had to be evaluated (which we asked about prior to our departing day for our vacation and was told it wasn't necessary) As the guy in charge (don't remember his name) brought in the "pack leader" he immediately charged at my dog ensuing a fight. Mind you we are leaving for vacation. Said person in charged controlled the "aggressive" dog and we were guaranteed the dogs would be fine. We called continuously and were told the dogs were fine. Were we naieve? Probably. Were my dogs penned up all day for 4 days? Probably. We also paid for the 2 to be groomed. As stated in other reviews no nails were clipped, ears were dirty and the shave down one was to receive was a half a** cut that made him look ridicules not to mention the dogs weren't groomed upon our return, they forgot and we had to return with the dogs 2 days later and still leave the dogs because the groomer was running late. As a result of this we are debating taking a vacation this year. Are there any "GOOD" boarders out there? P.S. the reviewer that had a dog with a deep cut, the entrance where you checked in had a wall with a window on the top half. Upon picking up our dogs there was a dog that was so excited he literally crashed into the window when he jumped up. (he was probably hoping we were there to pick him up) Said person in charge was only concerned about the cost being passed on to the owner stating it was the second time the dog broke the glass and not even examining the dog for injuries.

Dogs run free in supervised, enclosed areas, designated by size; small, med and large dogs. Handlers rotate between the enclosures, getting to know all of their charges, while ensuring everyone is playing nice and not making a ruckus. Staff are all clearly dog-lovers, and friendly to the owners as well. They do accommodate for nervous dogs or those who need a gentle introduction to the stressors of playing in a pack. My nervous ninny comes home more confident from her days at B.P., while my big solid bully dog comes home exhausted from a day with the Big Dogs. This place is tops; the only -- and I mean it -- kennel/day care situation I would recommend to anyone. It is a bit on the pricy side, but what you pay for is the well-being of your dog -- not something I've had good experience with in any other kenneling situation.

I'm Johnny's mom, if you go check out bark and play my dog will be the extremely high energy black and white dog with the yellow eyes (border collie/ Australian cattle dog mix). When my husband and I adopted Johnny at the age of 4 months, we were overwhelmed and frustrated. As most people with a working dog know, or quickly figure out, these dogs need a ridiculous amount of attention and exercise. After four months of attempting to figure out a routine with Johnny, we were out of ideas and bickering all the time.We had been running with johnny and excercising him for 3 hours a day and he was still a nightmare.
Jerimy and Nick saved us from (gasp) having to return Johnny. They gave us real tips and helpful advice. They always are willing to chat, and call us immediately if they have any concerns about Johnny. They are always available. No exaggeration their main concern is always the best health of your little guy, that means no bullsh*t, if you're doing something wrong, inadvertently hurting, or mis-training your dog Jerimy will let you know.We have been with bark and play for 2 years and have never had a doubt about the outstanding care our little one receives. I can absolutely recommend Abe and the rest of the team without any reservations. If you've had a bad experience with bark and play; I'm sure once you voice your concerns you will receive an explanation that dispels them completely.
As for a dog walker in the park on the phone;
A testament to the years of experience that the team has, is that they make caring for the dogs look easy and effortless, but please don't confuse this with inattention or laziness.

bark and play provides the best possible care your little one can receive, all the time without a doubt.

bark and play provides the best possible care your little one can receive, all the time without a doubt.

We're having an excellent experience with Bark and Play. We've been bringing our dog here regularly for the last month and couldn't be happier. My dog has a great time, the staff couldn't be nicer and I feel like they really love my dog. I checked out a couple of different places but I was so impressed with Matt at Bark and Play during our initial interview that we chose these guys. And, the other dogs that come here are great, making for a really nice environment! Very highly recommend!

here is the reall truth about bark and play, I use to work there andI can honesly say everything that happens there.......,,...

first off they are not clean, dogs use the bathroom everywere and sometimes it doesn't get clean untill they notice it, it's under law that if you have a surtin amount of dogs there meaning over 15, they should be two people on the floor, there is only one person there, only when there is two people is between the hours of 11-3, cause sooo many people go in and they don't want to look bad, I use to work in daycares better then this, dogs get I can't say the word but hurt here, if you don't believe me, look at some of the dogs there, some of them have real bit marks, I was witness to a dog getting seriously hurt by one of the employee's there, and nothing happen to him, he is still there, they said he was hurt by another dog, which was not true, The staff there try to practice dog physcology there and they get the wrong results, they call themselves trainers, but they are not, they will except any dog there, Jermey the owner is not even a trainer, papers are not there when you come in,.... they have no groomers there, when I was there I was doing everything, I don't have a license to even groom, dog get really hurt here from not only the employee but the owner when he shows up,.....

Pleasedon't take your dog here, look into better daycare for your dog, make sure you do research on every dog daycare, and make sure you can keep an eye on them, pictures of the day, and all, make sure they are insured, this one is not,......

Please do your homework into daycare before you put your dog in one, its the best thing you can do for your dog

Pros: transportation

Cons: it's not a clean van and dogs get durty in the van and never washed

I used to take my dog to places that charged me $60+ for a haircut and bath only, this place only charges $20+ for baths and everything from $45+ and I do mean everything. My pup had his nails trimmed, teeth brushed, ears cleaned, hair cut and a bath and on top of it all they gave me a discount card so after I pay for 2 more sessions I will get 1 for free!! p.s. he got a bandanna as well, very nice touch***

Thank you Bark and Play!

my dogs go here and they absolutely love it! they start getting so excited whenever we are within a block of that place and to the people that are saying "Bark and Play ' is a PET STORE that breeds and sells puppies under the guise of " Doggy day care." " that is just absolutely ridiculous, while they do sell puppies they only do special orders for people basically acting as a broker to help people find the type of dog that they are looking for. On top of that they even do some charity work with a few rescue groups to keep otherwise good dogs out of the shelter and dogs are never crated there they are the only CAGE-LESS BOARDING IN BROOKLYN.

I just went here for the 1st time but it was such a pleasant experience I will definitely be back. My dog smelled soooo good when we left and looked very handsome with a little bandanna that the groomer gave him. I give this place 2 paws up!

Great! Wonderful!

I highly recommend Bark and Play to others lookin' to clean up their pup. Molly was one stinky bulldog. I do appreciate being squeezed in on short notice and having her ready in no time.

Nice guys, very reasonable prices and Molly looked like a million bucks! Thanks so much for taking care of my baby, it was her first time at a groomers and she will be going back again. Seeing that she rolled around in mud the day after, it might be sooner than I might think. =)

I have taken my Yorkie here on numerous occassions. Its close to my bf's office so he takes him in. I JUST came in for the first time last friday to pick him up. Friendly staff, affordable prices---Just $15 if you drop them off. I THINK he likes coming here. He is ALWAYS so exhausted at the end of the day that he is borderline cranky...but he gets that way when he is tierd....so I think its a good think. He generally needs a day or 2 to recover. My experience has been very good with them.

Horrible Experience!
I brought my dog there for about 3-4 months. When my roommate went to pick up my dog he was bleeding from the shoulder, deep enough that you could see his muscle. The kid working there didn't even know he was bleeding, and my roommate noticed the shoulder as she went to put his harness on. My poor dog had about a inch wound in his shoulder that had looked like it had been bleeding for awhile. After a $250 vet bill and still 4 days left on my pre-paid package, they did not want to pay for anything, and i was surely not going to bring my dog back there. After talking to them, they said that he was bit on the way out the door, which is not true, my roommate was there and watched him come into the office area. So I should get the 4 days i had left on the package returned to me, because it was in fact neglect- I mean how long had my poor dog been hurt?? After many lies from Bark and Play and much frustration, thank god my dog is ok, please spread the word, I wouldn't want anyone else's dog to be hurt because of this irresponsibly run business.

Do not take your dog here, the business is poorly run, and I really don't care about the money anymore. It just makes me sad that these people are watching after people's beloved pets.

I took my dogs here for boarding and grooming about a week ago. The staff here were very accomidating with keeping my little ones seperate because one is very old and the other was in heat. my old doggie has to take medication and the staff were more then helpful in administering it (rectally). when i picked them up the haircut was exactly what i wanted. not too short but a good trim for the summer. now whenever i go away i know my kids are safe at bark and play! (ps by my kids i mean my dogs...because dogs are people too!)

My girlfriend and I were going nuts before we found bark and play. Prior to moving to Brooklyn our dog was used to having a large yard, coming and going from the house as he pleased. Two walks + a trip to the park everyday was just not enough for my very active pup and we really didn't have the time to do that anyways, one of us would always have to give up our lunch break to go home and take him potty. We checked into other daycares only to find that the dogs only get so many hours of playtime and spend the rest of the day in a cage on top of that most were actually unwilling to take an unaltered male. We had almost given up and were thinking of hiring a dog walker but we were very reluctant to allow a stranger access to our home, this is NY after all...when we just happened to come across a card from bark and play at our vets office. It came very recommended to us because we do have a large dog and they have the largest cage-less daycare facility in Brooklyn. Unlike other daycares that shot me down over the phone because my dog was not neutered they actually took the time to do an evaluation of my dog which he passed with flying colors. Now instead making a mess in my apartment while I'm at work my dog has lots of regular playmates that he looks forward to seeing. He actually recognizes the area a few blocks a way and will get so excited to go there, he also gets upset if we passing by the neighborhood and he doesn't get to go!! Great service at a great price, we bought a package to save some $, and actually get daycare all day for less than the cost of a dog walker to come to the house 2x a day!!

Dirty, Smelly. Dogs are abused. Not fed.they use the cheapest dog food. Staff are always quiting. Noisy & scarey for your dog. Prices are too high. No emergency Vet, No Groomer. Previous groomer was so bad.
The staff don't know what they are doing. They always loose your dog items.
If you need a boarding or day care go some where else before your dog gets sick or dies.
One dog already died there.
This place is not safe your dog.
They will go out of business soon, they have a bad reputation.

Bark and Play ' is a PET STORE that breeds and sells puppies under the guise of " Doggy day care." They are kept in filthy cages lying in their own feces and urine. I don't even want to think about what happens to the puppies that aren't sold.

B&P Is not a safe haven as dogs can easily slip out, run into the street.

So not recommended!

Bark & Play are the best doggy day care. I have a golden retriever name Ginger who is very active.
When anyone from Bark & Play comes to my home to pick up Ginger she's all over them. My Ginger loves all of them. Jerimy is so nice. I also like the rest of the workers there. They take good care of your dog.
I had my dog boarded there many times. Bark & Play are there for you when you are in need.
I highly recommend Bark & Play.

I have used Bark and Play for several months now. I have been to other doggie daycare facilities and I must say this is by far the largest and the cleanest. I was sending my dog to another daycare, but upon my investigation, I was shocked to find out that my dog was in a crate most of the day and was only allowed to play for an hour. My dog was in a crate for 11 out of the 12 hours!! I realized that this doggie daycare was not the right environment for my pet and went in search of another daycare that could suit my dog's needs, while making my pet feel right at home I worked near Bark and Play and randomly would show up and look inside through the gate and see my dog playing and not in a crate!! If you want a relaxed and enjoyable environnment for your pup, I highly recommend this place.

My boyfriend and I have the classic problem that other dog owners have in New York... no convenient place for the dogs to run free and get exercise. We recommend Bark and Play to EVERY dog owner we pass on the street in conversation. We may as well do publicity for them! We came across this business when we had to leave town, and weren't comfortable taking them back to the boarding facility we had taken them to previously. We wanted to feel like the place cared for our babies as much as we do. I talked to Liz on the phone for almost a half hour, with her answering any questions, telling me about her dogs, and general conversation. The staff here is so genuine, and so welcoming, we not only would never use any other facility, but now we invest in doggie daycare which allows our two dogs to run free and play with other dogs for 24 hours. Liz or Patrick (two of the nicest people you will ever meet) pick up our dogs on Saturday at 10am and drop them off Sunday at 3pm. When they ring the bell, our dogs forget we exist. They love these people so much! Bark and play has given us a night of freedom (all parents need it!) and the dogs a chance to play and socialize in a large, clean space and they come home EXHAUSTED! We have a pit that is 2 (Argos) and was attacked when a puppy, so had a hard time with other dogs. Jeremy took Argos and worked with him for an hour, and now Argos wants to play with all dogs, big and little. We also have a puppy that has a medical condition and has special feeding needs, which they accommodate happily. We know, dropping them off, that they are going to a place that they are loved the way they are at home. We trust the Bark and Play staff totally, and are so grateful for providing a condition free, reasonably priced service, that would make anyone who loves their dogs as much as we do comfortable. Everyone should look into this facility before wasting your time and money on any other place.

I recently had my Wheaten Terrier groomed at Bark and Play, and the results were absolutely horrific. I told the groomer to give her a " typical terrier cut," and he ended up SHAVING her from head to toe. She looked like a concentration camp victim. In addition, he did not even cut her nails. How is it possible to charge someone $85 for a grooming, and the dog's nails aren't even cut. The grooming facility was smelly and dirty as well. Please heed my advice and do not waste your time or money on this terrible place.

Bark and Play may be well at providing dog related services, but they are lousy at fitting into a community and addressing neighborhood concerns. They are located on 20th St. which is one of the nosiest streets in the area, because it is open to two way commercial traffic. I mention this because I live directly across from this business which is located on the street level. It has an "open" facade, so whenever a pedestrian passes, the dogs bark with reckless abandon. Many times they are teased or tormented by outsiders reacting to their barking. They also bark when new dogs are brought in and then just bark because they are dogs. Well I love dogs, but their barking goes on at all hours of the day and night. It also appears to me that they are contained in overcrowded conditions. One day I actually saw a dog run away from his handler and disappear around the block. Although their Queens location might have an outside space, their location at 20th St. in Brooklyn has no visible yard and I have yet to witness the dogs being walked. The owner (Jerimy) seems unresponsive to the situation. My only hope of doing something is to convince potential clients not to use their services

Our dog has been going to Bark and Play since it opened. It's been a godsend, since we can't always give him the exercise he needs/wants. The place is clean and spacious, but even more important, the staff are wonderful and really love dogs. Jerimy, the owner, is a great guy and very knowledgeable. The staff are great too--you should see how excited our pooch gets when they show up to pick him up! This is really a first-class operation.

I recently rescued a Pomeranian from the city shelter. While he's a great dog, he's serverely under socialized and can be loud and agressive around other dogs. As a first time dog owner this was a little intimidating for me and so I decided to try and find a doggie day care where he could go and get used to being around other dogs. I called a few places and most wanted to interview my dog, especially after I described his temperment. Most warned that he didn't sound like the type of dog they would "accept." I happened upon Bark & Play accidentally driving home form work one day. I called and spoke with the Jerimy, the owner. He told me to bring my dog in, because he never turned a dog away and could successfully integrate any dog into the pack. I took my dog in and never looked back. My dog has been going for a month and is doing so much better than he was before. The staff always give me reports about how my dog is doing and they're all so nice. You can tell they love animals too which makes such a difference. I feel totally comfortable leaving my dog with them and just to see him in a room with other dogs makes me happy. The facility is very clean and large and I would highly recommend it. I am very happy with the quality of thier service and I find it very reasonably priced, as well.

Pros: Clean, Reasonably Priced, Great Staff!

Cons: None!
