This is definitely one of the best shops near town. The selections of bicycles are amazing and you can find what you are looking for in terms of custom parts.

What a lovely place this is. They will try to make you feel at ease by their talks and stories about cycling. The people in here are really great advocates of bikes.

I called in advance to ask how fast they could change/fix my flat tire because I had an appointment and had to go immediately. The guy on the line (Mike) said they weren't too busy at the moment and could probably do it in 15 minutes.

Seriously Sids, 3+ days late without a phone call or slightest apology.

As if interacting with bike shop guys is not painful enough (i could go on for pages on the unnecessary machismo and superiority complex of those who fancy themselves part of the serious bike community).

Background, I am a happy-go-lucky bike around for fun on the weekends kinda chick. So my bike was of course messed up when the fools in my apartment building moved it around this winter. I took it over to Sids on THURSDAY to get repaired. The man who filled out the info was pleasant enough and said that he couldn't get it ready that day but SATURDAY it would be done. Great fine thanks. MONDAY rolls around and I still have not received a call. So I call over to check and make sure it is ready to be picked up. Ummm... the had NOT STARTED on it yet.

UNACCEPTABLE. You run a service business, and 3 days later have not had the courtesy to call and tell me it was not ready yet. Plus who knows when it would have gotten done if I had not called.

So sorry my bike is from target and is not a hollow aluminum custom made blinged out two wheeler.

GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER.

Cons: bad late service

I'm legally blind and have recently been able to enjoy cycling by riding on a Tandem Bike ---thanks to the New York Chapter of The Achilles Club Tandem Program (which began in 2008). Through this program, volunteer-expert-cyclists ride on the front of a Tandem bike while legally blind participants ride on the back. The program initially met every other week on Saturdays in Central Park. During these meet-ups we were only able to do one or two laps because there were more riders than bikes and we had to take turns. Fortunately, my initial captain owned her own Tandem and I have been able to ride longer distances with her. She has also loaned me her Tandem bike to use with other captains for which I am very grateful. I have now ridden in a variety of circumstances (group rides at night, group rides at day, all over the boroughs and in all kinds of seasons and weather). Proper gear (apparel and accessories) is important as avid cyclists know. But for beginners procuring this can be a bit frustrating. Two bike shops in the Upper West Side were staffed with people who seemed to think it was beneath them to answer questions and even got disgusted at my lack of knowledge as if one is born knowing all there is to know about cycling. I continued to try and seek out what I needed and through a recommendation by Paragon (a helpful place) I came upon SIDS located at 151 West Nineteenth Street. It was there that I met the sales associate, Delissa Santos who was very helpful---discussing the pros and cons of different brands. She was even enthusiastic as she shared her cycling experiences with me. Ultimately, she assisted me in finding the suitable equipment and apparel which has allowed me to enjoy Tandem riding more fully.

In 2007, I decided to launch my cycling career at 40 years old by training for a 3-day charity bike ride (Braking the Cycle). The first ting I had to do was buy a bike. I visited 5 bike shops, tried 8 bikes. Larry at Sid's (19th st) was the best sales guy in the best bike shop. He was a joy to work with, incredibly thoughtful and encouraging. He and the rest of the staff worked very hard to get me on the right bike with the right modifications and the right accessories. I just my fished my second year of cycling and I am still huge fans of Sid?s. Larry found me some great rain gear, in my size, at the last moment and the shop has always gone the extra mile to keep me up and running. For the record, I love my Orbea Onix and my Cannondale bright orange rain jacket. I also think my Specialized titanium cycling sun-glasses were a great investment.

Pros: Great selection (for Manhattan), enthusiastic, talented sales and service

Cons: mid and high end selection

My wife and I recently purchased two new mountain bikes from Sid?s Bikes on 19th street in NYC. I was not familiar with the shop and was given the contact through the manufacturer, Ventana Mountain Bikes USA. My phone call was answered by Larry Wallach who helped me become more familiar with the brand I was considering and deciding the needs for our new bikes. Much time was spent selecting components and discussing options; Larry saw this process through with complete attention to every detail and delivered a superb result. Both Larry and his shop team, Mickey and Darius, were knowledgeable and professional. I highly recommend giving Larry, and Sid?s, a call when in the market for a new bike and certainly if considering a Ventana frame.

If you want a bike shop with all the knowledge and none of the attitude, Sid's in Chelsea is the place to go. I had them custom build a high end mountain bike (an extravagant 40th b-day present to myself) and it is the best bike I've ever had, and I have owned and ridden many. As soon as I am done with this review, I will get on it and go! I'm already planning my next project for these guys. Wether you ride a lot, or a little, know a ton about cycling, or just want to cruise around, Larry, and the rest of the crew at this clean, organized, cool shop, will get you excited to ride a bike. Their selection is the best, from super high end road and mountain bikes, to affordable around town and commuter bikes, you will find what you need. Helpful, handy and down right happy. Yeah Sid's! Do NOT go to Sid's if you want to be abused or feel small.

Ah Sids,,

I think I'm the typical New Yorker, bought a bike at the local shop, kept it in the basement of the building, got a flat, never rode it again..

But when you visit Sids you feel a bit different about biking. The store is clean, well deigned, bike are accessible, they look like works of art. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and engaging. Over the past year I've ended up with a number of bikes (mountain and road) from Sids. I highly recommend their shop, I believe its on 19th just off Seventh Avenue in Chelsea. I've worked primarily with Larry. Ask for Larry, not the other nice guys/gals that work there. Please note, this is not to imply that Larry is not nice because he really is!

Enjoy your new bike!
Michael

Choosing Sid's bikes was the best decision I made when deciding to purchase a bike. The staff was super friendly and really nice. When I initially called to check on whether or not they had the bike I wanted in stock the sales person talked to me on the phone for almost 15 minutes and didn't try to rush me off the phone. Later when I came in and wound up changing my mind and asking a lot of questions they all stuck with me until I made a choice. No one tried to rush or pressure me at all. I'd tried other bike shops before and always felt pressured to buy the one bike I was being shown and not ask questions about any others, or even worse just outright ignored when I didn't come in knowing exactly what I wanted. Sid's is bringing customer service back in the bike shop world.

they (all the staff) couldn't be nicer. i found what i needed and ended up buying more because they answered my questions and didn't pressure me. first bike store in manhattan i've been to (after 5 others) that didn't make me want to run away and buy everything on the internet, where there are no salespeople to ignore, overwhelm or pressure you.

In the market to purchase my first road bike, I recently checked out several bike stores in NYC. I found the staff at Sid's to be the most patient and knowledgeable. The selection of bikes is great and I was able to find something in a price range I was comfortable with (and I also found something out of my price range that I can dream about!) I have heard good things about Sid's from a couple friends of mine and I am happy to pass along the recommendation.

After using Sid's to build up my first bike, I figured they would be perfect to swap out parts with my new frame. I went to the new store in Chelsea assuming I would get the same high quality service as the one on 34th. Famous last words. They first tried to add an additional fee to remove the parts ($80) then another charge to build the parts on my new frame ($200). After I balked, the mechanic made a phone call to the other store and suddenly found the cost of removing the old parts was included in the new build price. Mind you, he's been at Sid's for quite a while so this shouldn't be something he simply didn't know about. The mechanic promised me the bike would be ready in a week. A week later, I returned to find.. you guessed it, nothing was done. Again, I got some lame excuse and a lukewarm promise to build the frame that day. After making a quick call to Toga to confirm they could take me in, I told Sid's that I was canceling the order. The sales rep seemed unconcerned and simply let me walk out without even trying to keep a long term customer. I had been going to Sid's for a while and have thrown quite a bit of money their way in an attempt to build a good relationship with a local bike shop. I really wanted Sids to be the one but I've had it with their bad attitude, high prices and no real interest in keeping a loyal customer. In NYC, there's plenty of good LBS worth patronizing, just don't use Sid's.

I recently purchased a custom built bike from Sid's. I've been working with a bunch of fantastic, knowledgeable people at the 19th street location. The staff, Delissa, Jay, Larry, Darius, Albert, Colby all know a lot about bikes. I've seen them in action with other customers. And whether you're buying a $5000 bike or a $500 bike, you'll get treated with respect and ride away happy.

There are a lot bike shops in town and I will go out of my way to work with the Sid's team for service and support. If you care about your investment in the equipment and the sport, look no further.

I had an issue with my bike not being ready on time. I eventually spoke to the manager and got store credit, so they DO listen to customer complaints and respond. I'm retracting my earlier posting and upping my rating with them.

These guys are great. They carry a great selection of bikes, and they
know what they're talking about. I bought a Cannondale road bike
from them. My friends told me to see them after I went around town
to other shops. I was upgrading a 10 year old heavy bike. They
asked me lots of questions about the kind of riding I wanted to do.
Then they gave me a few choices to test ride. The Cannondale was
the nicest bike I tested. So I bought it. Then they did a fitting session
for me. I'm really happy with this shop's professionalism. Highly
recommend.
