Message from Gus' Place

Located on Bleecker Street, just east of 6th Avenue, Gus' Place brings the Village unique Greek food with a Mediterranean flare. The light and flavorful Greek-accented cooking has an emphasis on fresh seafood. Starters include a mezedes for the table which includes grilled lamb, lamb sausage, shrimp, dolmades, tomato, cucumber and feta cheese. Mussels steamed with cilantro, champagne and dijon mustard; crispy calamari with spicy tomato sauce, and a Beet Salad with dodoni feta cheese and toasted pine nuts with citrus chive vinaigrette. Among main courses are a Grilled black Angus steak with red wine sauce, garlic mashed potatoes and spinach; sizzling fish rainbow trout with couscous; braised lamb shank with lazanaki noodles and cinnamon tomato sauce. Gus' Place has been serving up authentic Greek cuisine for over 20 years becoming a Village staple.

The Scene
When Gus Theodoro closed his restaurant in 2004, the West Village lost a beloved spot for homey Greek cooking. His new place, a few blocks from the old location, piles on taverna trimmings of stucco walls, brick-lined arched doorways and black-and-white family photos. The warm service and chatty crowd of regulars have resurfaced, too.

The Food

Dishes at Gus' bask in an earthy glow, starting with garlicky tzatziki and fluffy whole wheat pita. Though an octopus salad suffers from slightly tough tentacles, beet salad triumphs with toasted pine nuts and citrus chive vinaigrette. However, it's a daily special of fragrant lamb sausage wrapped in phyllo that rules the appetizer roost. Saffron and fennel subtly uplift a salmon, mussels and scallop stew; and clay pot chicken is transformed by plump figs, apricots and feta-enhanced polenta into a rustic salve. If you're too full for flaky baklava, a glass of apricot-tinged Muscat makes a sweet substitute.

Key Points

  • Family staple for years
  • Homemade Greek specialties
  • Outdoor European dining

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - When available, a kickier-than-usual Boutari retsina ($32 a bottle) stands up to some of the lighter meat dishes as well as the seafood.
  2. Brunch - Dishes like buckwheat pancakes, Greek yogurt with homemade granola and eggs Benedict made with smoked salmon are available, and Gus' wife bakes the scones, breads and muffins at their home around the corner.
  3. The Extras - Many dishes can be made gluten-free for those with allergies.

this place is basically family style italian food. The portions are HUGE! Definalely too much food for just 2 people, but you can take home the rest.

Best Greek food in the city

by sbnyy21

This was my first time in Gus' and it was a quaint place, it has all the makings of a cute little place. There was excellent service and I had a waitress who took the time to explain different dishes. For starters they gave a whole wheat pita bread with a butter and feta cheese spread which is absolutely delicious. The appetizers were excellent and I highly recommend the zucchini fritters and spinach pie. Also, my girlfriend really wanted stuffed grape leaves (dolmas) and we asked for a plate of them even though it wasn't on the menu they still put a plate together for us. If you're interested in wine they have a very large selection of greek wines in addition to some australian wines. Many of the wines are very fruity and smooth tasting. For dinner my girlfriend had Gus' Greek salad which had such great seasoning and fresh feta, it was amazing. I ordered the mousaka and was amazed by the great taste of it. It was so good I wanted to eat it slow and savor it. My girlfriend doesn't like lamb, yet she liked the mousaka. Dessert was excellent. We had chocolate baclava which was out of this world delicious. I highly recommend this place to anyone.

Best Greek Food in the City

by darrich

I was delighted to return to Gus's Place and have honestly missed the authentic and amazingly delicious food-Aveglomena soup is the best! My friends and I ordered numerous small plates and of course the soup. We savored each one of them-the salmon in phyllo melted in our mouths, the spanokopita (spinach pie) was feta-licious, the dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) were served warm and surrounded by a luscious sauce and the warm goat cheese salad was wholesome and scumptous. The waitress was knowledgeable, personable and allowed my friends and I the privacy we needed to enjoy our pre-theatre dinner. We topped it all off with a piece of ravini-almond cake and left the restaurant vowing to return and return to continue sampling new dishes and repeating the small dishes we ate tonight--( the soup is the best anywhere!) Welcome back Gus and Sheran- you were sorely missed!

I was in here recently and had an excellent dining expierence. The atmotsphere was very relaxing and enjoyable. The feta was very fresh along with with great selection of wine that was offered. The fish was very fresh as well. I will be back in the summer when the weather gets warmer so i can sit outside.

Best Greek in the city

by carolkay

Its like walking into Greece. The people are extremely nice and seating is cozy. I went one of the first days the restaurant opened and the service was great as well as the food. The only dish i don't recommend is the fried calamari it wasn't my favorite, but the Greak salad was the best I've ever had. I've been to a lot of Greek places this was far the best price and food wise.
