Experiencing Diadem
by Greenie
Bottom line: Diadem is like anything else in life. Whatever and however you plan for a experience is usually your guaranteed outcome.
I came to learn about Diadem through a friend who was referred by another friend. Nevertheless, I visited the salon during my friends appointment to have the opportunity to scope the location, parking availability, atmosphere and the like. I also wanted to talk to the recommended stylist, explore the use of hair products, price list, wait time and process of scheduling. I also had a discussion about the (then) current status of my hair, past chemical use, any health issues that may have an effect on the condition of my scalp or hair, and what I was looking for within the services of the salon. That was in December 2008, and I remain a satisfied customer as of this writing. Since then, I have had the opportunity to experience a very intimate level of professional hair care and treatment from a degree of expertise that I have truly appreciated. The professional yet friendly and relaxing atmosphere lends itself to the quality customer services and personalized attention, which has exceeded my satisfaction. As for the wait time, please note that quality care takes time, and the same time it takes for the person ahead of me is the same if not more time that is spent in caring for my hair and meeting my needs to expectations. Another perk that I appreciate about Diadem is the flexibility extended around the salon hours and my work schedule. It's been great to be able to go to a early church service on Sunday, grab a snack and run to the salon to have my hair fresh for the upcoming work week. Being a observant person, I really like how the staff at Diadem train and treat each other, especially the students who prepare the customers for the stylist chair. I have seen them use the time of error as a teachable moment versus a time of scolding. That matters to me because vendors treat their customers the same way they treat each other. A wonderful thing that happened to me at Diadem. A previous customer left a blessing for the 8th customer on Friday March 13, 2009, and that person was me. I received a special message from the "Word" and a $25.00 gift certificate. What a surprise and blessing. Lastly, I could go on and on, but don't just take my word alone, plan your own experience.
Pros: Professional Hair Care and Treatment
Cons: Variable Wait Time

Ignorning the facts...
by ldybug13
Everybody has something to say about where the salon is located, parking, pricing but it seems like people are ignoring the big picture, their products. The most important ingredients to make your hair healthy is kept a secret at this salon. As a customer, I should have the right to know what exactly is used in my hair. High quality products right? Which one? Nobody knows for sure what their putting in your hair because their always behind close doors mixing your color or deep conditioner. And if you ask what to use for your hair in between your next appointment, they give you a generic answer and a product that you can find at Rite Aid. Why? If were all trying to achieve the same goal, healthy hair then why are we so secretive about sharing information like what types of products to use regardless of how expensive they may be and different hair regimens. Wake up people and really analyze your surroundings. You would want to know what ingredients are in your food right? Same principal applies to our hair. If your going to spend $100-$200 on your hair at least know what they use for your perms, hair color, deep conditioner, shampoo and styling products. If this information is kept from you then you should probably questioned their integrity...
Pros: Beautiful hair...
Cons: Never know what type of products their using...

Diadem Is The Salon For Me!!!!!!!!
by CSMobileUser2
Hello readers! I wanted to share with you my hair experience with Diadem. I remember my first appointment..I thought the salon was beautiful and most importantly the service was beyond my expectations. Im extremely picky but I had total trust in my stylist to cut my hair on my 1st visit!!! Everyone is very polite and you can tell that they all love and respect each other. My hair has never felt as good or looked as good as it did when I left that day. Sure I paid a little more than I would usually pay but that didn't matter to me because my hair has been so healthy every since. I love the products, the atmosphere is great and like other natural salons, you are going to wait. I've work in salons for years and I loved Diadem so much that I wanted to join the team. They truly care about YOUR hair and the products that use guarentee results. I recommend that you experience for yourself the benefits of a Diadem wash and curl. That's all it took for me to see that Diadem is the Salon for me:)

I tried Diadem for myself..,,
by CSMobileUser
I came across the salon when riding through the neighborhood. Went online and found a lot of negative reviews. I decided to see to ahead and see what they had to offer. WOW! I must admit that the prices are a little steep but the beauty and healthiness of my hair causes me to overlook it. I have had plenty of stylist who were able to make my hair look beautiful but it was not necessarily healthy. They have really good products. The way that the stylists trim hair in that salon... It is remarkable. I look to myself as being somewhat picky- I really must say that they are good. As far as the prices are concerned, at this point, I don't know of any place cheaper with the SAME results as Diadem. As far as the attitudes that some reviewers spoke about, I have not experienced any negativity

It is time for change!!!
by DSST
I have been a faithful customer of Diadem for a at least 4 years maybe longer than that. Healthy hair is important and you feel great when your hair is fabulous. Nevertheless, I have a problem with the pricing!!!
The prices keeps changing!! I can count on a number of times when I was charged a different price for something simple. My hair is healthy and it looks nice but I feel like I am being robbed! I agree with the other reviews there should be a list of prices visible for everyone to see. Where is the integrity? I remeber my friend came with me to get her hair done and for a basic cut & style she was charged $100.00 and her hair was cut shorter than normal (so she could keep coming back) luckly, her hair grows fast so she had not returned back since then. The stylist are ok for the most part but I tend to think they follow the owner behavior when it comes to changing prices. If Diadem does not change the way they do business they will not have a sucessful long lasting business. Why ask for customer feed back when you don't plan on making any real changes.
Pros: great hair products, hair care
Cons: prices inconsistant, lack of integrity
Pros: hair care, great products
Cons: inconsistant prices, lack of integrity

Diadem is the Truth!
by jep1208
I highly recommend this hair salon! I have been a faithful customer for years. The negative reviews concerning Diadem are coming from negative people. I have not been to one black hair salon that I did not wait for at lease 3 hrs or more. Did we for get that our hair is a process (coloring, perming, blowing drying those kinks)? What in the world do you want, this takes time. Most black hair is truly work! The motto of the Diadem is "healtly hair is our priority". So if your hair is not a priority don't go to Diadem, and the truth will set you free!

Reality check
by honestlyspeaking2U
I am a long time customer of DIADEM and as I sat down to read some of the reviews that were left i got angry." ENOUGH is ENOUGH "
This is what is wrong with our people and our society as it is!
When we see something doing good we hate on it ! and try to DESTROY IT!
But WHY!
There is more than enough to go around , and more than enough salons in the city that you can go to to get your hair done.
But REALLY PEOPLE this has gotten out of hand.
You have PEOPLE leaving petty comments , that have absolutly nothing to do with hair
AND people trying to use them for advertisement?!!!!! THAT's RIDICULOUS!!
What this is supposed to be about is the Hair!
DIADEM IS A HAIR SALON!!!!!!!!
They do hair exceptionally well and thats because they are dedicated to what they do. My stylist works hard, and so does her co workers. They are a great team who love each other, their clients and their Profession.
I DON"T MIND PAYING THEM BECAUSE I'M ALWAYS SATISFIED. (and you get what you pay for)
I've been to many salons in this city in my life time and have been unhappy with the service and or results and guess what?
I would never go back to those places.
I am loyal to my stylist and my salon and i appreciate what they do for my HAIR . Because thats what matters. NOT WHAT THEY WEAR, NOT WHERE THEY SHOP, NOT WHAT THEY NOTHING!!!!! NONE OF THAT JUST MY HAIR! because thats what they DO.
Diadem you have a beautiful establishment, full to Professional , Pleasant, and Talented Stylists!
Keep doing what you do!!!!!!
Pros: Professional , friendly , and talented stylists
Cons: None ( may be complimentary water or refreshments sometimes)

Observations
by semisatisfied
Lisa has been my stylist for quite some time and I'm happy with her. As for the salon, it is very nice, clean and comfortable. Everyone seems to be nice and I haven't noticed any laughing at clients but i tend not to pay attention other people. I'm usually in and out in a reasonable time. However, I have noticed people sitting for hours with damp heads. . Everyone in there is a good stylist. I think some of the comments lose some validity when you "hate" on Dez and her $300 jeans. What does that have to do with the service? Nada!
I can't put my finger on why it takes peopele so long to get out of there. At my old salon, the assistants could do a lot more (spot touch-up, semi-perm color). This way you didn't have to wait for your stylist to finish up a client before she starts on you. This is just a theory since I've never managed a salon but I do create workflows/processess for a living so I think someone needs to take a look at their areas of oppurtunities. Every business has things they can improve upon. Do you have to be nasty about it? NO. Do you have to continue to patronize an establishment that you aren't happy with? By all means, NO.
Since the wait times are a recurring theme, why not take that as an action item and make an attempt to remedy the situation. In this economic climate, some people may not be to afford to come as often as they used to or get the services they once did . So when they do come, they want to feel welcome and they want to feel like you value their time. There are many good/great stylist in the Phila metro area. How can Diadem differentiate themselves from the others? Service. Diadem could invest in a consultant that could observe and make some recommendations on how they can improve and be the best salon they can be. Diadem is on the cusp of being a magnificant salon. I wish you well and much success.
Pros: Hair Care
Cons: Wait Time

customer svc is more than just smiles
by jahma
yes, yes, yes, staff is so friendly and courteous (most of the time, start questioning them about prices..). I was a client for several years. The wait time was always frustrating so I would alternate salons depending on my schedule. After awhile I began to really pay attention to the source of conversation of the staff and the whispering back and forth (w/o going into detail I will say they are immature and get a kick out of laughing at others) I also noticed staff would get upset if you were late for your appt. but they can start your appt. three hours later! There has been no efforts to improve the time scheduling issue (ie: high end salons do not have you waiting for hours and there is a grace period for late customers b4 rescheduling). I convinced myself to leave this establishment, felt as if i was giving my time and money to a place that was all smiles with no regard and respect to the customers.
Pros: nice place, music & smiles
Cons: indirect disrespect

avoid if you have somewhere else go
by carcal
Not a good experience and I attempted 3x to give a sister a break b/c there are some days where it can be hectic. However, i realized that it was the norm to wait over 4 hours to get a blowout & curl. Then pay upscale prices for gheto service(what!!!????) How Ridiculous!!! -- I could have drove downtown to a reputable salon, got my hair done, met friends for dinner & a drink and still be home before they even attempted to wash my hair at Diadem. Now, if you do not have a good salon to treat your hair right -- I guess you will be stuck with this place & praising....
Pros: upscale hair products
Cons: appt time problems

not for me
by mjmusic
All i can say is ... never again. I was encouraged to write a review. My hair felt soft & bouncy, however, i wasted my whole evening for a blowout & curl (did not get home until 10:30 and my appt was at 4!). I actually left my job early when i shouldn't have. I beleive the staff thought I was younger, once my hair was washed and there was some evidence of gray, the attitude and persona changed. The ad indicates that this is an upscale salon -not by my standards. I can get the same services elsewhere w/o the sillyness and disrespectful wait time.
Pros: quality products
Cons: several- wait time #1

Review from the heart...
by fashionfrwd
I have been going to Dez since I was 12, and even then, my hair has always looked fabulous. Now as I have grown older, I still continue to use her services. I have recommended quite a few people to the salon, from classmates to random women of Philadephia, who give me compliments on not only the quality of my hair but the extremely detailed haircuts. From long black, to short black, to extremely short blonde, I have stuck with Dez, and I would never switch. I read "reviews" that say that she is materialistic, but how can one judge someone negatively based on their great success? She has been doing this since she was a teenager, this is something that she has a great passion for, combine that with a strong drive, and you have a young, beautiful, successful, black entrepreneur. Granted, you will be waiting a bit, buuuuut it definitely depends on what day and the time you schedule, because I've been there all day one saturday, and in and out the next. Personally, I've never had a problem with any of my styles; but honestly if you want something done, SPEAK UP. If you don't wanna walk out looking like an old hag, then say something. The stylists are not mind readers, and are definitely not obligated to do what THEY want, it's your hair. I agree with another reviewer, go to Ang' for lengthy styles and bouncy curls; go to Dez for funky asymmetrical cuts, and bone straight hair. Overall, I don't plan on leaving Diadem anytime soon! TRAP...=)
Pros: One of a kind haircuts, Healthy Hair, Positive Atmosphere
Cons: Wait Time

My hair is fabulous
by qtpie514
I couldn't have asked for anything more in a salon. Everyone was welcoming, patient and I received great service. I felt the focus was on me from the moment I went in the door to the moment I left. I even was educated in what to do with my hair and provided options. When you have natural hair it's hard to find a place that will make your hair look straight and not burn your scalp. My stylist was not only conscious about burning me but I feel it is just as straight as when I had a perm. Needless to say I'm definitely satisfied!
Pros: nice and educated stylists, great outcomes
Cons: it's best to be first so you don't have to wait

not for those with a calendar
by class501
OMG! I used to frequent Diadem and a friend of mine told me that all the reasons why I stopped going were on these reviews, so i had to view them first hand. What i do not understand is why haven't they changed??? Dont we all strive to improve our business? We want to support our people but if they do not care....... oh well. I cant beleive the staff is still snickering at people behind thier back; Older women are still being treated differently and referred to a Ms. while the younger women are on first name basis ( i thought we were all adults) and it seems like the wait time has gotten worse!! leaving Diadem was the best thing for me b/c i no longer could waste my time and pay $$. i get better service downtown w/ ammenities and maybe a 15 minute wait.
Pros: products
Cons: highlighting not great; awful wait time

I had found a salon that could take care of my type of hair, but at what price?? my entire evening and pocketbook!! Desi thinks her salon is the be all end all. She has a horrible attitude , very gossipy and materialistic. We are paying for the $300 jeans she wears to work. Well guess what- I found a salon that does a better job , professional and takes my appt on time. For those ladies that are worshipping this place because you are afraid of the unknown - WAKE UP - no one is better than you and your time is just as precious as anyone else.Stop being taken for granted
Pros: none for the value
Cons: unprofessional wait time

Fabulosity! I'm here 2 stay!
by itnaf
I have been a client at Diadem for 4years and I can honestly say that the salon has evolved. Success is a journey and through the years I feel like I have taken the journey with them. From the moment you arrive you are treated with nothing but respect. Ms. Carol has completely mastered the art of customer service you are drawn in from her initial greeting. Each stylist exudes great energy which makes them easy to approach and a delight to talk to. The talent in the salon is very consistent so you can feel comfortable in anyone's chair. My personal stylist is Desi whom I have a great amount of respect for because she is a young entrepreneur, a beautiful person a FABULOUS stylist. I leave my healthy hair in her hands and cannot count the number of compliments I receive on my many cuts, colors and styles. Now as for the wait time, I can't say that I was in and out during my lunchbreak but I can say that I am in by 2pm and out by 5-5:30pm and am completely satisfied with my results. I do realize that with some processes ie. color there will be a longer wait time and that is communicated when I make my appointments. The atmosphere is comfortable and I can even get connected thru the available wireless web that they offer. How many salons offer wireless connection? About the neighborhood.. no its not center city but if it was you would be complaining about the cost of parking now wouldn't you. I am highly recommending Diadem salon for anyone who is looking for healthy, stylish hair. Schedule your appointment in advance and not during your lunch period ( because thats not realistic) and I guarantee you too will have a great experience.

Pros: talent, creativity, wireless web

An upscale salon..Diadem
by 5457
Diadem..an upsale salon where professionalism and friendliness is commonplace from all the stylists. I remember my first time at Diadem. I was greeted with geniune smiles... welcoming my presence. My stylist Ang gives me the same time and attention as the person who was before me. If you do not mind the wait you will be more than satisfied with how your hair looks and feels.
Pros: friendliness, professionalism, geniune, ambience
Cons: the wait time

Dont bother!
by Rel090
Where to begin. I have ALWAYS like the end result., absolutely beautiful hair but I couldnt take the wait anymore. I had been going to Diadem for a few years and decided that my time was way too precious to spend all evening there, so I left. I was ALWAYS punctual for my appts. but ALWAYS waited a minimum of 4 hours to get serviced. There were times when they were still at Main St that I was left upstairs and forgotten about once Carol would leave for the evening. There was a time that Desi was doing a weave when I arrived. Now, tell me this if you know that it takes a minimum of 3hours to do a full sewn-in weave, then WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU SCHEDULE THE NEXT APPT 45 MINS AFTER THE WEAVE APPT?!?!?! I sat there for 5 hours while she put in that weave. MY TIME IS PRECIOUS TOO DESI!!!! During one of my appts I witnessed another customer get fed up and decided to leave after she had been there for 4 hours, Desi had the nerve to get an attitude when the customer left. HOW DARE YOU GET UPSET THAT SOMEONE DECIDED TO LEAVE AFTER YOU HAD THEM WAITING THERE OVER 4 HOURS. I understand that there will be some wait time and I dont mind that but when it starts approaching 4,5,6 hours after I just got finished having a long and stressful day at work, thats when it becomes problematic. The last thing I want to do is spend 6-8 hours in a salon after leaving work. Desi, you need to STOP taking your customers time for granted. Do I need to get into the inconsistent prices?? As some others have written it was ALWAYS a guessing game. I had been going there for a few years so because of the price I was quoted during my initial visits I would always have that amount ready for subsequent visits but to my surprise I would end up being quoted more than I had paid previously for the same exact services. Then i still had to tip you and the shampoo girl. A friend of mine stopped tipping her altogether. If you value your time, go somewhere else, it is NOT worth it.
Pros: Healthy, Shiny Hair
Cons: Long Wait, Pay upscale salon prices for sub-standard services

Fabulous Hair...LONG WAIT, HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE & OVER-PRICED
by MonLis
Diadem's stylists are very good at what they do but prepared to wait a long time for service. If the owner Dezi does your hair she will have you waiting FOREVER; sad part is she never offers any kind of apology for the delay. You would think at a place where they charge so much $$ for their services you'd receive superior customer service; which would include at the very least an apology but I was NEVER given one. She schedules too many people close together (because she's more concerned about how much $$ she can make in a day as oppose to providing superior customer service) not allowing enough time in between each person so you end up waiting and waiting and waiting!!!! I have waited anywhere from 4-6 hours just to sit in her chair, which is absolutely RIDICULOUS. She has an attitude of her time is more precious than yours. I had never dreaded going to the salon until i started going there but they kept me there for awhile because my hair ALWAYS looked beautiful. Dezi exhibits poor customer service, which she really needs to work on. As someone else wrote the prices were NEVER the same. I had gotten the same service every single time and the price was ALWAYS different. The price would fluctuate between $55 & $75 for the service I received. It would be nice if there was a price list sheet on the counter that clients could take with them, but they will never make something like that available to clients. The way it is now she can charge whatever she feels like. If she wants to charge $55 today she can, if she wants to charge $75 your next visit, she can and you can't even challenge her on it. I have been to upscale salons; you are offered coffee, tea, water and pastries and are made to feel welcomed...NOT HERE!!They are a hood salon with high prices, thats all!!! They are charging the same high prices they charged when they were on Main Street but now u need to be concerned about your safety when walking to your cars. That salon is completely OVER-RATED!!!!
Pros: Extremely Healthy Looking Hair
Cons: EXTREMELY LONG WAIT & POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE

After reading the reviews on this salon I decided to give it a try. As a young professional woman who moved to this area about a year ago i have spent a lot of time in and out of Philly salons. Getting an appointment was challenging but that was quite comforting just knowing these folk are working and in demand. I also got an estimate on the cost of my services when I booked, MY MY when i walked in the salon I was really dazzeled its a beautiful salon and a comfortable environment. I was thinking can they deliver? All of the staff seemed to enjoy what they were doing. My stylist was quite knowledgeable, very straight and honest, with great suggestions. Desi took the time to show me where my hair needs were and gave me great ideas. My services were so worth the cost and my Cut is Sensational. Thanks Desi Thanks diadem.
Pros: Talented and Creative
Cons: must schedule in advance

No One is Perfect
by basicbeauty
To me being a hairstylist myself finding someone who cares about your hair and can manage it well is hard to find. Ladies as you know it is very hard to find a stylist who truly care about hair care, I have seen it all, I have walk into places and turned right back around because yes I might get in and out, but what will my hair look like. Desiree is able to look at your hair and start you on your journey for everything it needs. Her love for what she does shows in your hair. Depending on where you are in your journey with your hair will allow you to determine what is important to you. Because once you have been to enough places that have you in and out and later to find out your hair have been more damaged because the stylist haven't been taking the time that was needed you'll see the value. If you have been going to Diadem for enough time you have been seeing a true growth in every area and every business has more room to grow, no business is completely perfect, but you can best believe that any owner that cares which I know she does is to have the best in every area for her business. Back to my services, Yes I waited a little, but it was steady and I didn't mind because for me it was worth is to know I could trust Desiree in my hair. Diadem's Goal is excellence and it doesn't happen overnight, but it is happening, the truth is evident, treat yourself the healty hair and feel the difference. I felt it in my hair so I know you'll feel it in yours. Plan your day accordingly , but don't miss the oppurtunity of your hair looking as wonderful as you feel on the inside.
God Bless
much love

Up to you!
by pwgs
I agree with a previous poster--"women with money don't have time to wait". I am very busy and if I am paying high prices of a boutique salon, I expect boutique treatment. My longest wait was 8 hours. I was never offered a beverage, etc. Also, prices are arbitrary. Everytime I go there, I am baffled at what I am paying for. Prices change for the same do! I just don't get it. Upscale salons don't only provide an upscale look. They also provide upscale services....hand massages, drinks, cookies, websites with prices, uniformity of attire, and impeccable customer service.
As far as the hair--I like it! But, it is not good enough to justify the wait. Perhaps people who have not been exposed in life expect to wait for a nice hairstyle. But that is not the case. My styles have always been very basic. Nothing really stands out. But I will say that healthy hair is definitely a priority. You cannot knock that.
The owner--nice girl. I admire her ambition to do this at her age. However, she needs to set a standard in her salon. She participates and initiates gossip. As a customer, I don't need to see your drama. All of the whispering is totally immature. She also does not accept criticism well. Instead of reading these reviews and making positive changes, she looks at them as if we are all crazy.
The location is very sketchy. I am always looking out the window at my car and praying that no one steals it.
All in all, I say it is up to you. If you do not value your time, expect to pay random prices, enjoy visiting unsafe environments, and witnessing a bunch of gossip Diadem is the place for you. However, if you would rather spend that money on a salon that is worth it, find another salon. I rated them average. They have good and bad points. Their formula totally needs tweaking. This is not a 5 star salon.....but it can be! But it isn't a 1 star salon either. The 5 star reviewers are faithful customers who are brainwashed.
Pros: Healthy hair
Cons: The wait, the gossip, pricing

A Better choice for better Hair
by KaseyLett
Oe of my coworkers had recommended diadem to me after months of me complimenting her hair . Her hair dresser had cut off all the dead weight and her hair began growing back , fast , healthy , and without a PERM. I have only went to Domincans and had not went to a black hair dresser in years. After one visit my roomate and I were more then satisfied with Lisas's service and decided we had finally found a salon home and became regualr customers. Lisa as well as the other stylist are more into haircare which is impossible to find in a stylist these days. My roomate and I were amazed while waiting for our appointment on how straight and ready to go the hair looked when the stylist had simply completed blowdrying the other customers hair. When we tell our friends about our hairdresser compared to theirs we always say "When lisa simply blowdrys my hair it looks like it did at other salons when it blowdryed, straightend and curled". I am more then satisfied by the service , the down to earth stylist , and the pleasant meangaement at diadems. I am more then sure anyone who is looking for helathy hair that is easy to manage would be more then satisfied if they gave Diadem a try!!

My first ecnounter with Dezi was when she was a stylist working at Saks Fifth Avenue. I have followed her for the past 10 years. I have never had someone to be this interested in the state of my hair. Dezi convinced me that after to many years to count, to stop getting a perm. I truly enjoy my experince at Diadem, when I step through the doors, I feel like I'm at home. The service is very professional and very relaxing. I would, and have recommended Diadem to everyone. This is a shop of young entrpreneurs, who care about their work and their reputation. I respect their time, and they in turn respect mind.
Keep up the good work.....

So happy I found this salon
by Candydiva04
After a long string of hair stylists who were more concerned about pushing clients in and out of their doors than taking the time to actually care for their clients hair, my hair was in such bad shape that I was on the verge of getting a perm, when my friend told me to try to Diadem. And I am so happy she did, I've been going regularly since December 2007 and have never looked back!! The staff at Diadem, actually knows how to care for natural hair and is really concerned about improving and maintaining health of your hair with great style. The wait on occasion can be a little long, but lets be realistic how many people have never waited to get their hair done? Besides in my opinion the quality of the treatments is well worth the wait. My stylist is Angeline, and she always does a great job on my hair. When I leave my hair is shiny, bouncy, and full of life. I get tons of compliments on my hair, and her presses LAST!! Ang took great pains to bring my hair back to life, and I couldn't be happier with her or the salon. Ms. Carol and the rest of the staff are always friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this salon!!
Pros: healthy hair, friendly service

why the big deal?
by nospac
Ms Carol is a gem and has mastered customer service. The actual hairstylists are immature and have no respect for your time. This salon is just like many others in the 'hood. If you have nothing else to do for 6 hours this is the place 4 u. If you are a busy working girl I would not recommend, apparently the staff thinks you have nothing else to do but wait on them. Ironic, because the prices are above average - women with money do not have time for this...
Pros: quality products- shiny hair
Cons: poor time management, no amenities

Got fed up & quit!
by vmtj
I was a client w/ Desi for several years and just got fed up. Granted, my hair was in good condition, however, never really recieved a 'head turning' style or anything fabulous. Upon reading the reviews I would agree as a woman over forty I was treated as if I had no style - and that is how i walked out of the salon ( shiny curled hair with a nondescrip style). As the years went by I grew more and more impatient and dissatisfied with the wait time and boring haircut &style. By the way Desi likes to cut (I actually overheard Desi state that 'older women should not have long hair and she wants her Mom to cut her hair'). The other stylists Ang, would be a good recommendation if you want to keep some length. My time spent in the salon was negatively impacting my lifestyle and I just had to go. Also would like to inform that the prices are inconsistent. I felt as if I was being cheated!! Why should i have to pay high prices and wait several hours for a vanilla hair style?
FYI don't beleive the hype - There are other salons in Philly that will do your hair right and you do not have to wait all day. I'm just mad at myself for waiting so long b/c im VERY happy with my hair now.
Pros: condition of hair
Cons: ridiculous wait, boring styles

I highly recommend Diadem if you like to wait for over 5 hours. Also if you enjoy spending a lot of money on a regular hairstyle. Angie was rude. My experience was the worst.

THE BEST SALON IN THE CITY!!!
by candynshuz
Diadem is undeniably the best salon in the city. The staff is warm and friendly and the atmosphere is uncomparable. The technique they use to straighten your hair is like no other and the products they use are fabulous. Although I am a "plain jane" the cuts and colors always look great on each client and the styling is like no other. Out of all of the salons in Philly, no one has done a more remarkable job than Diadem (and I have gotten my hair done by the so-called best). I tend to travel between NY and Philly so when I come to town my first stop is Diadem to look fabulous!
Pros: The overall experience is fantastic with superb end results
Cons: No one else in the city is comparable

how do u value ur time and $$?
by bkvj
Reading these reviews in amazement. Wow, sisters we continue to settle for less than what we are worth. I was going to Diadem for 4-5 years and as a New Years resolution I decided to get rid of anything in my life that caused aggravation. Unfortunately, Diadem was one of them.... I could no longer abuse my precious time and $$ and I may be over 40 but I did not want to look corny anymore. Those other reviewers that indicated that you SHOULD wait for good service are fooling themselves and I wonder how it will take for them to wake and understand you do not have to settle for any disservice in life.. Agree- I have never been there when my appt started on time (i was a regular customer). agree- they do treat older women differently & do laugh at customers on occassion (immaturity??). agree- they do need some more experience in color/highlighting. agree, they do not provide upscale services. It took some searching but i did find an upscale salon where appts start on time and provide sharp & chic styles (at any age).
Pros: hair maintainence
Cons: value for ur time & money

The Best Thing on Germatown Avenue!!!!!!!!
by Joyful27
I have been a client at Diadem since August 2005 and I cannot imagine spending my money at any other salon in Philadelphia. The professional, friendly, atmosphere is superb, especially in comparison to other salons that I have attended in the past.
Angie has been my stylist since I first started attending and she was recommended to me. I always receiv compliments on my hair color and my cuts. Angie is a phenomenal stylist and that is proven every time I get my hair done and people give me compliments or ask who does my hair!
As I continue to receive compliments, I will continue to recommend the staff at Diadem because it is definitely the best thing on Germantown Ave!
Pros: Ms. Carols welcoming attitude. The professional and talented staff!!!!!
Cons: None for me!

Good investment
by DH730
I started going to Diadem in October 2007 and am glad that I made that decision. My stylist is Angie and I must say since I have been going there, my hair has a new flare. I have fairly fine hair but when I leave Diadem, my hair has body, bounce and shine. I will admit the first time I went there, the wait was a little longer than I anticipated, but they have made up for that. If I were to go off of my initial impression and didn't give them another chance, I would be missing out on the healthy, vibrant hair that I have been longing for. I also like the fact that they specialize in natural hair (I have been growing out my perm) so you are going to pay a little more for that (I have friends that go other places and spend a lot more than I do). They do give perms, if that is your preference. The atmosphere is chic, the music is just right and Ms Carol is probably the nicest receptionist I have ever met. People complain about wait time (which I can understand to a certain extent) but how many salons don't have a wait? I went to a lady who worked from her home and I still waited. Needless to say, I am happy that I made the decision to stick it out with Diadem.
Pros: The end result, Atmosphere

Overrated
by phillyQT
I'll be the first to say thatI have not been a faithful customer, due to some of the same things some of the previous ladies have shared. I began going to Diadem in the summer of 2005. I initally started with Des, who appeared to be knowledgeable, however her attitude left alot to be desired. My hair was OK, she definitely can cut , that is her strong point. I then was transitioned to Angie, whose strong point is curling, not cutting. The rest of them are questionable. I agree that for the prices charged appointments should be timely. I also agree that the new location does not match the prices at all. What happened to the light that shined when on Main St?(Jesus) Although the location is new, I wasn't impressed. Unfortunately 'm still searching.
Pros: Mrs. Carol
Cons: Location, Prices, styles, attitudes, opinions

average skill calls for average prices
by SoTrue4U
Some of these reveiws are true, some aren't. From my experiences they do not treat older women disrespectful, they do not talk bad about their clients. However they are over priced for the neighborhood. They have upscale prices and do not offer upscale service. In other words Main line prices in the projects. Prices vary, check out time becomes a guessing game due to no prices advertised. In closing I hope that Diadem reads customers concerns and makes some necessary changes using one of the three options, lower prices, offer specials, or just move to a upscale area. With out your customers where would you be?............Nowhere
SO STOP TAKING US FOR GRANTED!
pros: interior is swank loft like
great products
great with unrelaxed hair
cons: unsafe location (if you have a evening appt)
professional color classes needed for entire salon
updo hair styles are questionable
hair cuts instead of trims

Disregard the previous...PLEASE!
by MissKris21
Well firstly, I must say that Diadem is a gem in itself. Diadem's staff is an even greater gem. All the Diadem staff are highly professional. I must disagree with the previous complaintaints; There's talent, style, energy, and genuine concern for each and every client who walks through the door. Believe me, Diadem is not overrated, I have very good reason to believe that Diadem is at the top, and Des along with her staff knows what it takes to be, and remain number one. No else can win with them around! Everything they do, it's done with sincereity.. Whether it be a trim, they trim with precision, A cut; they cut and make a statement. If they make a simple suggestion... it's for your benefit. I've been going to this salon long enough to know that this is no suspicious business, if anything this a successful young black woman's business, who handles her business well. If you've been to any other upscale salons, please take notice that they don't have prices listed either, at most upscale salon's the patrons there really need not to inqure the prices, however if you want to know just ask. That's what I do and get the same prices every time. Reading the other reviewers statements... I would suggest if Saturday is a day where the wait is too long, maybe try another day. But if you sit out on Diadem, you're jipping yourself. I would say my only complaint is the wait as well but it takes time for fabulousness! Treat yourself dont cheat yourself girls. Ms. Carol would be glad to welcome any new comers and will fit you in the first available spot.
Comparing apples to oranges just dosent work, with that said, Diadem is the apple and everyplace prior i've been to just seems like oranges! Diadem is not your typical "around the way salon"; no gossip, no soliciting/booster buying, no cursing etc.
Pros: Skill, confidence, atmosphere, parking, staff
Cons: Some wait time

Wanna be high class salon in the hood
by tootruthful
Now Now where do I start..... Lets see at the top Dezi(The Owner) Her hairdos are ok they are not sharp!!!! She acts as if she is the be all to end all when it comes to providing service but its ok. Next is Angie I believe her name is, she does the same dos and some times she appears to be clueless on what to do on her clients as well as the newest girl. The new girl does Grandmom hairdos and I don't mean a Jazzy Grandmom either. I have observed on several occasions a Gordon Phillip Class being held right while the client is in the chair! Now upscale places hire upscale stylist who don't need training! and once the training is over they charge the client up and for what!
Now I can understand prices being a certain amount given the area but Diadem is no longer on Main Street so tell me why their prices are still the same in the Hood! The area doesn warrant the prices they give out.; It just doesn't make since!
Carol is a very nice woman:)
I read a lot of the other reviews and it seems a lot of them say the same things and if Diadem is a smart and business savvy establishment as they say, they will take what people are saying and use it wisely. Good Luck.
Pros: Atmosphere
Cons: Pricing and skill level of stylist

Diadem, one of a kind
by peacefulearthmom
I am very surprised at the negative reviews! I have been a client at Diadem Salon since January 2006. When I started there I had a relaxer and damaged hair. Since that time my hair is natural (and pressed as straight as a relaxer). My stylist, Meeka, always listens to my ideas about my hair and offers advice and suggestions. I usually want a simple, no fuss style and she always gives me options. As with any business there are always growing pains and improvements that can be made. However, Diadem is one of the closest examples that "we" have to an upscale salon, that cares about your hair health and not just the latest trends. It seems that we give allowances to salons who put horrible chemicals in our hair, or just don't do the hair of women of color. But when it comes to a salon created and maintained by a young woman of color we seem to expect perfection, when we have never received perfection from any other salon. I value Diadem for believing (even when I didn't) that I didn't have to fry my hair with chemicals for it to be beautiful. And although the standard of beauty in America is straight hair, Diadem taught me that I could maintain that standard and have my own standard of beauty that is just as good, if not better. Diadem is one of a kind. I'm sure some things can be improved and the staff is probably working on it, but, Let us not "hate" or be jealous. Let's just be thankful that we have it and support it.
Pros: everything
Cons: Staurday wait time

Great Salon
by ladybug44
I have been a patron of Diadem's since Dec 2008 after my stylist Lisa starting working there. Lisa has been doing my hair for every week for the past seven years so I have no qualms with her knowledge and skill as a sylist. Diadem is a hip, stylish salon. The music and atmosphere are superb. It is always clean and neat which I can't say for many black salons in Philly. The staff is very friendly. There are no nasty looks when you walk in (you all know what I'm talking about) just smiles and a warm hello.
All of the stylist are good and have their own areas of expertise which they share with one another. It is refreshing to see professionals share their knowledge.
I've seen several comments about the wait time. Will you wait? Well it depends. If you go during a peak time yes you may be in the salon a little longer. Complaining about wait times on Saturday is ridiculous. It is like going to the gym at 530p and complaining that you can't get a treadmill. DUH!!!
For someone who gets their hair done every week, I have no issues with the wait time. Yes some weeks are busier so there is no way you can give any validity to an opinion with a sample size of 1 visit.
Keep up the good work!!! Diadem Rules! (LOL)
Pros: Atmosphere, Stylist Skill Set, Security
Cons: none

Truly it was extraordinary
by stable
I read the reviews and as a young professional woman I knew this was a place I needed to check out.
Truly it was extraordinary. Dez and her team have created an ambiance which takes the salon experience into an entirely new dimension of well being, far beyond your typical salon of color. The level of service and professionalism is unparallel to any other salon that I have visited over the past 10 years in various places and in Philly. For cut and color, I highly recommend Dez. I was extremely impressed by her depth of knowledge, education, professionalism as well as her intuitive sense regarding the client's needs. In my personal opinion, Dez and Diadem are at the top in the greater Philadelphia region. I highly recommend this salon.
Pros: forward-thinking, continually expanding their talents

Suspicious business!!
by wtf08
The salon in nice, neat and clean, But for the prices of the services and the lack of time management makes it a bad salon. The reason I labeled my review "suspicious business" is because a business that do not list their prices are the ones that often mislead, decieve and overcharge their clients/consumers. Ladies that go to this salon should go to the Pennsylvania Attorney General's website and or call and they will tell you that it is illegal for businesses in PA not to list their prices for services and or goods!!! I was given 4 different prices for services at Diadem and given hair care advice from a negative and very opinionated view. Everybody is not the same and don't want the same for the hair, I found that out after me and my friend visited on different days and seen each other with the same hairstyle for the price of $105.00 for a wash blowdry and curl( no our hair did not have diamonds in it) not only that but we talked about the salon and the long wait 61/2 hours to be exact we endured and we also found out we were told the same thing go natural relaxers are bad for your hair. It makes me angry to see Black salon/sbusinesses that are not as good as the non black businesses. I have been to dominican, italian and white salons and have been treated better and given the best services not only that I have never had to play the guessing game when it came time to pay. Diadem's staff need to change or they will continue to loose good people as their client due to below standard service not upscale. Go if you have time to waste, money to throw away and you don't mind opinionated thoughts about YOUR HAIR!! I'm off and searching for the next salon or stylist that meet my standards.
Pros: Nice loft syle salon, clean and neat.
Cons: Too many for the price and time wasted.

time is money and i was paying a fortune!
by luvjoh
I was a patron for 4 years, my hair was healthy & manageable - then one day my boyfriend said to me 'why do you keep going? you complain appts never start on time, prices are inconsistent & expensive and you always change the style of your hair when you get home because they just curl it up. Don't you know time is money too!!" I would waste all day Saturday sitting in the salon or my evening without dinner and seeing my kids ( they would be in bed by the time i got home. Sometimes i would leave work early thinking i would get out earlier (sometimes that strategy did work) Its like I was in a relationship that was better than the last one but I still was not happy and scared to get out. I finally saw the light and quit going & found a better salon relationship ( just like life- just takes courage). Diadem is suppossed to be an upscale salon and they do use quality products, however For those of you that have never been to an upscale salon, you have nothing to compare it to. Believe me the way Diadem operates is not upscale. An upscale salon, takes your appt on time, $ services are consistent, serve beverages, consult/suggest and the staff does not talk about or laugh at customers. Sometime patrons come in and not sure of the style/cut they want;upscale salons offer videos w/your face to view different styles. Go figure, at this place they just laugh at you or 'curl it up'
Pros: lofty decor, music, hair maintainence
Cons: not cutting edge; time scheduling issues like the 'round the way' salon

I tried but i am too busy & will not be insulted
by peanut51
The end result is above average BUT is it worth it? Loved it my first visit even though my appt did not start on time my wait was about an hour. All 4 other visits after that was absolutely ridciulous-- you wait wait and wait and think about what else you could have been doing (why do they even make appts!!) you watch the stylists giggiling (probably talking about other people), there is no place to go to obtain a snack or drink, you have no idea what you will pay. I presented a picture to the stylist ( Desi) and she eluded to the fact that I was too old for that style -which really surprised me b/c my friends & family loved the picture and thought it would look great. I decided not to get a haircut that day. Went somewhere else, got the cut i wanted and still getting alot of compliments &attention. Desi needs to get over herself and not think she is the only hip thing out there. There are other salons out there ladies that will respect your time & sexiness...
Pros: shiny hair
Cons: staff attitude/prof, unacceptable wait time for price

Diadem....Wears the crown well
by KizzyDub520
Firstly, Diadem is the epitome of talent. All the stylists are talented and very customer oriented. Professionalism is at the top of the ranks. I was such a salon hopper (6-7 at the least), fed up with substandard service, styles, and typical salon environment. The aura is welcoming from the time you set foot in the door. All eyes are on you with smiles and genuine greetings. The salon is a beautiful loft nicely and comfortably decorated. The stylists consist of five dynamic professionals that come together to make one great team. Desiree, Ange, Meka, Lisa, and Ron. I've gone to Ron as well as Des. I recently got a short cut and it was the best hair experience I've had...EVER...hands down. I walked out the salon with a new found ego... that's how fierce it was! Gaurenteed head turner when you leave this place. Des is very attentive and will tell you honestly what will work and has your hair's best interest at heart. The prices are above average than typical salon's but you get what you pay for. This salon is very adament about natural hair, however they do relaxers, but it wont be necessary. Straightening technique is uncomparible to the others. I've been going to this salon for only 11 months on a weekly basis, but I can definately see myself being a loyal and long lasting client of diadem. Ladies of all ages and all levels come to Diadem, and Diadem welcomes them all. Lastly, they do offer incentives for clients; birthday's and client referral. I would recommend Diadem to anyone and all the stylists are awesome. This place is well deserved of all its praises and recognition!
Pros: Parking, Attentive, Talent, Environment, Staff...Need I say more??
Cons: Sometimes long waiting, Certain stylists can be hard to get an appointment

Amazingly Healthy Hair
by jordan180
Yo i have thin hair that is curly at the roots and will not hold curls. I thought all hope was lost until i was recommended to Diadem and i went i was skeptical but i was told the truth that i had unhealthy hair. My stylist was Dez who kept a wonderful conversation even though i am alot younger. When i left my hair was so bouncy and healthy i had healthy hair for ONce!!!!! My hair began to grow and it stayed straight for TWO WEEKS!! WHEN my hair couldnt even last for one day. I love that hair salon andi would recommend to anyone, they can do anyone's hair if they can do mine.
Pros: they know what they are doing
Cons: there is a wait but to me its worth it and im impatient.Think about that

The Best Service and Atmosphere Ever!!
by jblackheath
My experiences at Diadem have always been great. The atmosphere is warm and the hair stylists and receptionist are always friendly and inviting. For the past 3years I have had all natural hair and my success is because of the great time and care Desiree takes with my hair. I always get compliments and no on believe that my hair has not been treated with any chemicals. The thing I love about Desiree is her exceptionally high level of skill and technique and the fact that I have endless possibilities with my hair. She gives me straight hair one week and curly hair the next. But her weaves are hands down the best in the city and I'm pretty sure on the entire east coast. No amount is too much or wait-time too long for a head full of healthy, shiny and bouncy hair, that only the ladies at Diadem can give to you.
Pros: Their mission for healthy hair
Cons: None

Burned at diadem Part II
by Anonymousalways
I actually called the salon and left a message about the burn mark and In the businesses response they write, please make any remarks while you are at the salon, unfortunately the burn mark did not materialize until the next day. For all reviewers, this is not hate it's just an awful experience at a salon I expected so much from.

Classy, Relaxed and Amazing!
by chantee23
Diadem has the best atmosphere a salon can offer! It's super clean, neat and relaxing. My stylist is Lisa and she works miracles on my hair! I often receive compliments on my hair! Lisa encouraged me to go natural during my first few visits and I couldn't really see myself going natural...and easily managing my hair on a daily basis. I workout often and don't really like to spend too much time on my hair before work in the morning. After weeks of seeing so many other women in the salon with gorgeous, natural hair, I decided to try it. I am extremley excited about my decision! I don't think I could have imagined a better outcome! My hair is growing stronger and healthier than it ever has! And it's easy to manage! Diadem is a great salon - everyone that works there is very friendly and will make sure that you leave with healthy, shining hair!

Best Place for Color, Cut, & Hair Care
by LadyDee2604
I have been going to Diadem since it open and have been going to Dez since she was at Saks Fifth Avenue's Elizabeth Arden's Red Door Salon (WOW!!!). She has always displayed nothing but superior service and professionalism ever since. If you are looking for someone that can cut your hair really well, Diadem is the place to go. If you are looking for someone to color your without making it look dry and brittle, DAIDEM is the place to go. Last but not least but most important, if you are looking for a place to go where your hair will be properly treated, restored and maintained, DIADEM IS THE PLACE TO GO!!!
Pros: Everything

Diadem, an amazing experience!!
by Cara21
I have been a client of Lisa's for the last 6 or 7 years. Healthy hair has ALWAYS been her priority, and she makes sure that you are satisfied with her service. So without a question I followed her to her new place of business, wonderfully known as Diadem. I remember the first time I walked in, I was greeted by Ms. Carol (Dez's mom, who is always so sweet) and everyone else I saw gave me a big smile along with a greeting, as if they knew me forever. The salon's environment is relaxing; from the furniture to the music that is played. This is NOT your typical salon; the catfights, gossip, silly stares, lazy stylists, etc., don't exist at this place of business!!! And while most may say that the prices are high, I'd rather pay more for quality and be satisfied, than be cheap and sad with damaged hair.
