We wanted something different to do for our anniversary. We read a lot of poor reviews but decided to go anyway. We're glad we did. The drinks were great. Had the passion fruit mojito and a Merlot. I generally don't drink wine, or merlot, but it was good.

Tried the drunken fruit and the assorted bon-bons. The wait staff was very friendly, the bartender was knowledgeable and friendly.

It was a Saturday night and we had no wait. Sat at the bar. Got drinks within minutes and the food followed shortly thereafter. Maybe the rain scared the crowds away. Most seats were taken, and everyone was getting served.

We're glad we went despite the haters. :)

This place has gone waaay down!! They shouldn't even call themselves the chocolate bar anymore since there are more flatbreads and panini's on the menu than chocolate desserts! I came to thiss place to get a chocolate fix but to no avail. because there barely ANY chocolates in the display case. The waitress convinced me to try a BBQ chicken flatbread and a little dessert called ""a pot de creme"". Lets just say, my waitress was the only good thing in front of me! The flatbread was hard with overcooked chicken and HUGE slices of onions ontop of a not so fresh flatbread! Then the disgrace of a chocolate dessert felt like I was chewing grains of salt because of its gritty texture. She said it was a custard but I've never had custard that was gritty.....I really did like this place for its great truffles but now it's just a waste of space. I wonder what happened to Chef Aaron and the previous owner. Maybe they can teach them a thing or two!

I visited Chocolate Bar for the first time on Friday. It was freezing outside and I really wanted a hot dessert after dinner. So, we left our dinner restaurant and headed to Chocolate Bar. We were really pleased to find it open so late (11:30pm).\r
\r
Our server was pleasant and attentive. The first thing my friends noticed were the prices. All of the desserts were $7.00+. With prices that high, I was expecting a bang up job.\r
\r
The server recommended the Pot de Creme. It sounded good to me. I asked if it was like fondue, and she said, ""yes, it is kind of like a pudding"". I assumed that meant warm like fondue and creamy like pudding. It was $7.00 which was a bummer, but I'd been meaning to try the place out so I figured, ""what the hell?"" My friends ordered a slice of apple pie to share. At $8.00 a slice, it should be pretty healthy. They were excited too.\r
\r
As the server passed, I asked if it was warm, because you know what they say about assumptions. She said no, but she would ask the cook if it could be warmed.\r
\r
Our order arrived pretty quickly. First I looked at the sad, teeny, slice of pie my friends had recieved. It look cold and small and heavily decorated with caramel. I then looked at my Pot De Creme, the server had forewarned me that it would be ""gritty"" due to the vanilla bean texture. That wasn't a problem, I just love chocolate.\r
\r
I tasted the wafer, it was really one of the worst things I've eaten this year. It was about the size of a quarter and so hard that for a moment I wondered if it was only intended for decoration. It numbed my tongue and when I dipped it in the chocolate as it was intended it was still really not great. \r
\r
The Pot de Creme was meh. Basically a pudding cup for grown-ups. Online it shows as $5.00 which is a much more reasonable price.\r
\r
My friends were bummed about their teeny pie portion. If it was going to be that tiny, the should definitely dish out some vanilla sorbet on the side.\r
\r
Basically, it was really meh. Pricey, whatever-tasting, and with a good server. \r
\r
My friend said about 15mins. after entering, ""this place is going to go out of business"". I can't say I doubt that. \r
\r
Take the reigns, management! You have a runaway horse!\r

Im so embarrased that I planned an informal gathering here. My friends and I were the only people in the establishment on a Tuesday night, yet the waitress sat at the bar and watched TV rather than taking our order. It took more than 30 minutes for our orders to arrive, and some of us had to get up and go to the bar in order to place an order. MANAGEMENT: IS THIS HOW YOU TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS??

I purchased several groupons for chocolate lover family members. Went several times and it was closed even though according to the hours posted online and on the door they were suppossed to be open. Today I got there around 3:00 pm and found out that they open at 4:00 pm. I waited until 4:00 just to find out that they only wanted to serve dine inn only. The lady was very rude and told me to come back at 5:30 and I told her that the sign on the door only said that they open at 4:00 and I just wanted to get some desserts for my New Years party. She said that they had no boxes or containers and wanted everybody with groupons to leave. I was not the only one there waiting and when we got mad they said they could only get a few pieces in a paper bag for our $25.00 groupon. I counted 11 people in line and we were not happy. I spent $40.00 and was supposed to get $100.00 worth. The desserts were smashed in the bags and as far as I am concern I didn't even get $10.00 worth. When I checked the price on line they overcharged me. She gave 4 pieces of cake for a $25.00 certificate. I am calling American Express since I used them for payment.

Don't buy a Groupon for this place! Terrible service! Music was so loud that they couldn't even hear you to take your order! I had $25 to spend and asked for 12 Truffles to go and when I got home they didn't even give me all Truffles! There were other kinds of chocolates in the box.....I should have checked but wanted out of there so bad. They also state on their website that they open at 3pm on Sat. but never opened until 4:15pm knowing people were waiting outside. Waste of time and Groupon money!

Two years ago, the Chocolate Bar was superb, the flavors sublime, the attention to detail remarkable. Today, not so much. The evening started on an off note, and then got worse. First, noticed that the rose on the table was sitting in cloudy, obviously old water. We were finally given two different menus with different prices for some of the same things.

Initially ordered the pot de creme. The wafer on top tasted like bug spray a very chemical flavor that kept on coming in waves and which made my tongue numb. The chocolate beneath had taken on some of that flavor and lacked the silky-smooth, luscious flavor of the past. Okay, maybe it was an isolated problem. Ordered a cheese plate. Took 20 minutes, and when it arrived, it was so sparse it was almost comical. The walnut bread was stiff and hard and the cheese wedge was very small. Two strikes. So, surely the chocolate martini would still be delicious, right? It was okay, but in a chocolate milk kind of way no discernable liquor.

Summary prices up, quality down, portions smaller. How sad.

What happened? Is this place on its way out of business, a victim of a bad economy? Did the ownership change? I want the old Chocolate Bar back!

After dining at a local restaurant in Decatur, we thought we could stop for dessert at the CB. The first thing was the paper menus that were woren or in need or re-printing. Next was the cakes. I know my desserts and noted that these were Southern Sweets Cakes. Nancy would be too disappointed to know that her cake are being served with out the fresh quality that she is known to bake.\r
\r
I had one slice of the Golden chocolate layer cake. It was old or poorly kepted. That was all I would order. I noted the bar was full of employees are was that the owner behind the bar whispering to one of the bar keepers? Not sure, but the business did not appear professionally ran. The last thing that got me was the note on the menu about parties of 6 or more. Not good. That kind on negative message is not good for business. You are still new. Try improving first before demanding.

My husband and I took two out of town guests to the Chocolate Bar. I had heard really good things about this place from the reviews in various papers. As a resident of Atlanta for 10 years I have been trying very hard to find more than a handful of consistantly good places to eat. OTP/ITP, I don't care; Atlanta just doesn't live up to other cities I've lived in (including San Fransico, Washington and even Cleveland). Bouyed by the great reviews, we took this couple out for drinks and deserts. Fifty dollars later for 4 almost nonalcholic drinks and one very small souffle with a spoonful of ice cream I found myself disappointed again. The poor overworked waitress tried hard and she did a very good job but she was the only one there making drinks, food and serving. In the hour we were there we counted over seven groups leaving without being served. Only one of the drinks even romotely tasted alcholic. Why would the owner put only one person there during the Decatur Book Fair? And how did the owner think he could get away with charging outrageous prices for so little?

We went. We drank. We ate. We wont be going back. Ill explain below.\r
\r
We had high hopes for this establishment as their specialty was chocolate (hence the name). For one we got the coupons from Group on: Pay $10 and get $25. Great deal right?? Nah. We couldnt use the coupons for alcohol (although not stipulated during the purchase). One of the main reasons we bought them. So I we had to pay for our drinks out of pocket. $10 bucks for one drink. Ouch.\r
\r
The Drinks\r
I had the Mississippi Sidehand martini: This was an absolutely great drink. The best Ive had in quite a while. Now Im sorry to say it all goes down hill from here. My wife ordered the Tiramisu martini. This drink does not measure up to its name. No tiramisu resemblance at all. Tasted more like chilled unsweet hot chocolate but with a smooth vodka. \r
\r
Preparedness\r
Now after advertising your business on Groupon, one would think your business would be prepared for customers. Our waitress advised us of all the menu items they did not have available at the time. My wife wanted to indulge in the Oreos and Milk dessert. Not available. There were about 5 other menu items not available on the already limited menu. Talk about starting off on the wrong foot.\r
\r
The Food\r
I ordered the bbq chicken flat bread which came with salad. Tasted ok but the bread was mushy and came out luke warm. Not how I want my pizzaish flatbread. Now my wife ordered the vegetarian flatbread. Basically it was the flatbread topped with the same salad from my plate without the dressing. A very bland dish to say the least.\r
\r
Desserts\r
Now this being a chocolatier place, you would think the desserts were awesomely incredible. Sorry to say. Nah. My wife ordered the brownie ala mode. Brownies are made with chocolate (hummmThe Chocolate Bar) and it had to be the most tasteless brownie Ive ever had. It really taste like it was sugar-free for diabetics. Topped with really bland again sugar-free tasting vanilla ice cream. Its as if their bakers/chocolatiers were on vacation during my visit. Now I ordered the passion fruit crme brulee. Now this wasnt too bad. A very interesting dish. Unfortunately, it was not enough to warrant my return to invest my money into establishment again.\r
\r
Conclusion\r
My overall conclusion is if your establishments main appeal is based on chocolate or desserts, at least make sure those above everything else is the best you can offer each and every time. One thing about consumers is if we have something great the first time, we are going to come back for more. On the flip side, if we have something not good the first time we will not come back. As a restaurants main consumers are from repeat customers and from word of mouth from those same repeat customers friends, there is only a downward slope if a customers visit is not even close to their expectations. Unfortunately, I had high expectations from The Chocolate Bar. But like Clevelands hopes on retaining Lebron James, I was extremely let down enough to write this. \r
\r
Cost\r
After spending $20 for $50 worth of goodies, and finding out that alcohol was not part of the deal. I really spent $42 plus gratuity out of pocket for two and received about an additional $45 in discounts with my Groupon savings. Had I not had my Groupon saving, I would have spent almost $95 for this evening out. Definitely not worth the expense. \r

Pros: Mississippi Sidehand Martini

Cons: Everything Else

.

I just moved to Decatur, and this is the perfect spot to go after dinner for dessert/wine/cocktails.....We got a couple glasses of great cab, a chocolate martini- yum! and truffles to pair.

The service was fine? Not exceptional but it's a pretty intimate atmosphere so no worries for us....

Highly recommend for fun spot after dinner or for light apps before...Will be back!

The drinks are good but menu very limited and does not appear to be fresh

Thought the showcase should be more appealing with fresh candy, so go for drinks, avoid food

This place has really gone downhill. I went a few years ago on a date and it was lovely... bistro like ambiance, a bit overpriced but overall a good experience.

Went a few nights ago. Service was probably the worst I've experienced in Atlanta, and I live in L5P (that's saying something). Staff knew NOTHING about the wines, foods, or anything else, and overall seemed clueless and pretentious...which was pretty funny, because there was absolutely nothing to be pretentious about.

Ordered the 2 cheese app. It was literally a wedge of stilton and some 'goat cheese' (it was NOT goat cheese) served COLD (uh, no) with 4 tiny rounds of raisin bread. I'm talking smaller than cracker sized bread rounds. For 2 wedges of cheese? They should take a page from Ecco and do antipasti correctly.

We received no forks. Just knives. I'm not sure if we were supposed to eat cold cheese sliced with the knives or what. I asked for some crostini, crackers, or bread, and was told they had none by an almost gleeful waitress.

We also ordered the salami app. This was even better. Something akin to spam (seriously, CHEAP quality salami sliced up in weird rounds, think pepperoni rejects from pizza only thicker), dumped into a glass bowl with some awful soy sauce/sweet sauce concoction and sesame seeds on top. Basically, a bowl of meat with, no joke, plastic toothpicks on the side. I finally gave up and attempted to stab the 'salami' rounds with a small slice of cheese. Still wasn't very good.

Anyway. Since our mostly absent waitress had no other bread, crackers, crostini, or other carbs in the restaurant, apparently, my somewhat daring friend asked if we could have a box for our cold cheese wedges to take home (by then they'd be an edible room temp!!). The waitress acted again put off, and 10 minutes later threw 2 round plastic containers on the table.. (tossed is perhaps more accurate) saying they also didn't have 'to go' boxes. Interesting!

So, in a nutshell: maybe they have good chocolate martinis. But uh, so do a lot of places in Atlanta, and you can get them for higher quality with real service and food that isn't being served straight out of amateur hour. If, however, you'd like some rock hard cold cheese, a bowl of meat drenched in watery soy, and toothpicks to eat it with for about twenty dollars, stop on by!

I think the chocolate bar is a great experience. What gets me the most is their martinis-hands down some of the best I've ever had. The mix drink list is amazing-I've tried a good variety of them and I haven't been disappointed yet. The drinks are mid-high price but worth every cent!

The desserts and drinks are excellent. The wine selection is good but a little overpriced. Some people might be put off by the small portions but it totally works for me.

We went here several times when it first opened. The desserts are good but seem to actually have lost some of their inventiveness over time. They also narrowed the menu which I didn't care for. The cocktails are good.

We went there with my mom for an after dinner dessert for her birthday. We stood around waiting for someone to seat us and finally just sat ourselves. My mom had the Mexican coffee which was delicious...everything after that was a disappointment. We ordered the brownie but didn't realize it had beer ice cream on it. We told the waiter we didn't like it at all and he just laughed and walked away. We also had ordered the death by chocolate and all it was too tiny blobs of chocolate - hardly the ""large"" dessert we had expected from the menu.

I was very excited to try out the Chocolate Bar. Unfortunately, the food was strange and overpriced. There is a teeny, tiny menu, including a few savory snacks, then a few ?inventive? yet overpriced desserts. $9 to 10 for a dessert is way too much money. The sausage was extremely dry and as salty as a salt lick. Several people had a bite and were grossed out. A one inch square piece of chocolate costs several dollars, and the taste was no better than Alon?s or Godiva. The desserts were not as one would imagine from the menu descriptions. A piece of cake sounds normal enough, but what if it is enclosed in a bell cloche scented with a sprig of lavender, and you have to pour a shot glass of strangely infused liqueur over it? The cloche had the heat trapped and the cake was so hot it burnt the tongue, and got soggy. Puddings were weird, as well. I am an adventurous eater and have a master?s (and many years of experience) in the hospitality field; however, this place was just too ?out there? (even for NYC, much less for Decatur). It may be good for a glass of wine or a chocolate martini, but save the weirdo desserts for the Jetsons.

You won't find anything like the Chocolate Bar. They offer a variety of wonderful desserts that can be paired with their extensive wine collection. It's a great spot to go to after a play, movie or concert. Or you could just skip dinner all together and go.

My boyfriend and I went here to end our anniversary date night out. It was on a Monday night so there weren't a lot of people there which was perfect for us. The waiter was really nice, knowledgable, and quick. I had the pumpkin pie martini and he had the chocolate bar martini. Both martinis were great-nice blend of alcohol and flavor. He had the Oreo bar dessert and I think I had some fruity dessert which was AWESOME! The truffles were great to take home. However, I was extremely surprised at the price. Our bill was more than $50 for just 2 drinks and 2 2nd course desserts! It was a nice place, but I wouldn't go there often. I need more variety for desserts, but I have stopped by to buy some more truffles!

The name alone should be enough to attract most chocolate fanatics, but this place lives up to its name. There is chocolate galore, but also enough non-chocolate items that you won't feel completely sick (unless you want to).

After hearing so many great things about this place, I was thoroughly disappointed with my first visit. Definitely not worth the hype the local papers have been giving it since it opened. As mentioned in the other reviews, the wait staff was uninterested and inattentive, starting the evening off on a bad note. You wouldn?t expect this sort of service in any restaurant in downtown Decatur! The deserts were not all that they have been cracked up to be, and I left there feeling that I would have rather had a piece of the chocolate cake at Watershed down the street instead!

It was wonderful to see downtown Decatur graced with such an original concept. Unfortuantely, the owner seems to be unable to have pulled it off. What started as a brilliant idea to serve unique, and sometimes bizarre, dessert items has morphed beyond the realm of the mundane. Friends have raved about the martinis here, yet when I tried one I immediately became sick to my stomach from the copious quantities of flavored simple syrup that had been added to the drink. It was enough that I left Chocolate Bar to trudge up the hill to Sage to have the friendly blonde woman with the great smile (can't think of her name--Michelle?--and I don't think she's there anymore) mix me a true craft cocktail. My times at Chocolate Bar have been characterized by long waits, indifferent service and mediocre ""treats."" It was a wonderful concept that truly failed in its application and I can't help but think that it was simply the wrong person at the helm. After all, whatever happened to the wonderful chefs who helped open the place? For as much as this joint touts its earliest reviews, those reviews were all about them.

I have been waiting for something like this to come around for so long. The Chocolate Bar offers a much needed alternative to the ordinary slices of cake, brownie, or cheesecake. This revolutionary concept is new to the small town of Decatur but i think we all have a lot to learn. At The Chocolate Bar it wasn't simply about what you are getting for your money. it is the elegance and art to the dessert. The warm inviting environment creates a perfect spot for date night or girls night out. The staff, even when completely overwhelmed, still managed to be hardworking and knowledgeable about the food. I think that the small, local environment creates a feeling of true southern hospitality within the staff of the Chocolate Bar. Overall, it was a great experience!

My husband and I had drinks and dessert here on Wednesday night - The Chocolate Bar and Espresso martini are some of the best I've ever had. We sat outside and it was a good crowd. The server was very attentive. The best part was the guy behind the bar - he was soooo helpful and enthusiastic. We had trouble deciding on which truffles to get and he gave us some great opinions on which he loved. (We had the ones with grand marnier, tequila, caramel, and some others - they were all great and FRESH!)\r
\r
The owner was running around helping people and very hands on, which I liked. All in all, I will plan to come back here and tell all my fellow Agnes Scott alums to be sure to stop by when they're around campus as well!

I have eaten at the Chocolate Bar 3 times now.

I love the atmosphere! The colors are great as well as the benches and seating are comfortable.

Try their curry popcorn! You can't beat it for the price. If it is your first time going, try the chocolate martini. After once, go for the wine!

It can get a little pricey on the desserts and they are small but rich in flavor. Save some money and split a sweet.

The impressive chocolate drinks at Chocolate Bar were so sippable and the passion fruit gummies turned me as extatic as Precious Pup, but the FOOD has changed my life! I've had dinner at ALL the great restaurants inside the Atlanta perimeter and all over Europe as well, and nothing comes close to the INTENSE flavors of the Chocolate Bar's Valentine's Day three courses and bonbon special. The chef is a genius, the staff is good-looking, fast and cordial, the clientele is just beautiful, and the atmosphere is 'chocolatier' still with Ed playing classic guitar on Wednsday night. --CCR

Pros: Easy Parking, Mind boggling dishes, Superior wine

Cons: Decatur is a long ways off for me

I've been to che Chocolate Bar numerous times now, since I live nearby, and I have several favorite items like the hot chocolate and the oreo dessert. However, on valentines my husband and I went for the prix fix menu and that's where I really learned how to enjoy the best of the Chocolate Bar - you've got to try several courses together. \r
\r
The desserts are not high in calories and aren't terribly filling, so it makes for a truly enjoyable experience for your palate AND your brain (trying to pick out the layers of subtle flavors). The dessert prices are quite low as well, so it doesn't break the bank if you have more than one course at a time. \r
\r
I feel like I've had a palate education every time I go there and try something new!

We went last Sunday night. The staff had ZIP for personality- they were socializing with each other as if we were interrupting their party. The place looked like it was going out of business to be honest, she said they' d had a busy weekend? Still, y'all ever heard of restocking the wine cubbies? We were very excited about going here, had read the review in Atlanta magazine, but were more disappointed than we had been in a long time with a place in Decatur. Maybe this was an off-night or they had the B-team staff in, who knows? Nonetheless, it left a bad taste in our mouth, and we won't be recommending The Chocolate Bar or going back anytime soon. By the way, the food didn't make up for the chilly service. What a shame. Don't waste your time or money, definitely no Southern hospitality here.....

I was excited to go to this bar. When my friend and I arrived we were greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere. The service we received, however, was disgraceful . Our server got our order and did not return for 20 mins, we waited as the hostess and another server walked by us and chatted with friends, Finally we alerted the hostess that we were being ignored, and she let our server know. This place has great potentional but the staff is rude and annoying, not worth the effort.

I was very disappointed in my recent experience at the Chocolate Bar. I went with a bunch of friends and, despite the fact we were buying drinks and chocolate, the owner/manager came over to our table and told us how much money they were losing from our big table taking up so much space ($700 to be exact despite the fact there were empty tables). Every few minutes they asked us if we were ready to go and refused to bring us water. Aside from that fact that they were rude, the chocolate was not anything special. The drinks were not very good, I felt sick after my chocolate martini. I also ordered another signature item - the Oreo - which was very sweet but not very chocolaty. You would be better off spending 2.99 on a bag of real oreos and get more chocolate and less rudeness.

I must recant my previous compliments from before. I went back to the Chocolate Bar to indugle in a bottle of wine and several chocolates and was ASKED TO MOVE TO ANOTHER TABLE!!!! I was livid.. I have never been so insulted and been asked to move in the middle of my dining experience. On top of that shortly after I moved the two table next to me became free which is what I was told was the reason I had to move in the first place. I was not pleased. My waiter was again wonderful but I could not get over what happend. I fully intend on not going there anymore and seeing to it that the owner knows about their management. Because they will no longer get my money!

I have never posted a review about a restaurant in Atlanta before, but my past experiences at The Chocolate Bar in Decatur have been bad enough to warn other people not to go. I live in downtown Decatur, and I was thrilled when I found out a dessert/wine/cocktail bar was coming last summer. The first time I went, I wasn't completely disappointed, but I also wasn't impressed. The dessert menu is very limited and the portions are tiny. The cocktails are good, no question, but you can go to several other places in Decatur with better service, better prices and equally as nice atmospheres. Though underwhelmed, I decided to give it another try a few months later. I left with the same ""ehh"" feeling, this time with a little more annoyance due to the fact that the waitress was hitting shamelessly on my boyfriend (when it was just me and him dining...). This past Sunday, we decided to give it a final go. It was around 9 pm, and while there were other patrons, it was by no means busy. Someone sat us at a table, and then we waited. And waited. And waited. Several servers passed by our table but didn't give us a second look. After 15 minutes, we got up and went to Carpe Diem for our dessert and drinks instead. I've heard similar experiences from other friends (""bad service,"" ""too small menu""), so I know it's not only me. \r
\r
If I were in the Decatur area and wanted dessert, I would recommend Carpe Diem. Or, if you are in the market for fun martinis, head up to Birdi's on the square. Don't settle for the bad service in an uptight setting at The Chocolate Bar...it's definitely not worth it.

Being from NYC it takes a lot for me to say I like a place. My friend and I stop in on a Wed. night. We def. fell for this lil place, loving the decor and the staff, was all so nice.. Our drinks..of course having to do with chocolate were all so yummy. The chocolate martini is def. worth getting. Though, the place is charming its kinda hard to have a convo without feeling like the people next to you can get into it, So if you can sit outside and enjoy the scene. Great place to go to start the night or maybe to end the night after having a nice lil dinner.

The desserts are small and the prices are high. The service was great, but the experience wasn't worth it.

The Chocolate bar as been getting a lot of hype in the Atlanta restaurant scene. After a very nice meal in another part of Atlanta my husband and I decided to give the Chocolate bar a try on our way home. Our experience that night was not at all in line with all of the hype. The decor was not as chic as advertised and the stark little cafe style tables did not encourage one to linger over dessert and a glass of wine. We were disappointed that an establishment which served so much chocolate only had one port option on the menu. What goes better than port and chocolate? The chocolate bonbons we selected ranged from OK to excellent. The service was mediocre at best. They seemed a little stretched thin that night and the stress was showing on everyone's face. All in all it was just OK, nothing really to write home about. I will probably only return to purchase chocolate boxes as gifts, but wouldn't eat in again. Just was not the welcoming experience I had hoped for.
