Heard about this place from a couple who got the train from where I attend school. Always been in the area to drink at Flying Saucer and never knew an Indian resturant existed.

Wine was gawdful (very acidic) & the waiter claim it was "okay" (Are you out of your mind?!). The appetizer was so-so. I forgot what they were called but small pies with yogart (very bland).

Enree: Prawns were AMAZING! Chicken vindiloo wasn't spicy/bland compared to other Indian resturants I've been too.

The entire resturant had an off setting!! The light fixture were tooo bright; as if the resturant was cheap. There was not much music. The setting wasn't intimate and there's wasn't too much people for the evening. The place seemed too empty & bright for a Friday night dinner =/

The manager didn't even tell us bye. He socialized at a table with his friends. Rude!

Pros: I've had better like the one in Sugarland

Cons: Bland appetizers, chicken vindoloo, wine, restroom, lighting

I am a Brit living in Texas and have had difficulty in finding a truely good curry until I visited Yatra with 9 of my girlfriends recently. The currys were without doubt the best I have tasted here and I cannot rave enough about them. Just try it, you wont be disappointed. We were from all over the world, Australia, Canada, America, Serbia, Asia (you get the picture) and every one of us enjoyed the food which was demonstrated by all of our empty plates returning to the kitchen !!!! The staff were also a treat, attentive without being overbearing, courteous and sometime flirtatious which all added to the wonderful evening we had. Although the restaurant is not local to where I live I shall be returning with my 'scottish' husband for another Indian treat soon.

Pros: Authentic & delicious

Cons: Its downtown

Great food, good service. It's definitely worth a try. Nice facility as well. Order the non-veggie combo.

I finally found this place. Their kitchen exhaust comes out around the corner and I could always smell it but could not find it.

The food and service were excellent. However, I'll likely not be back. I don't understand paying $12 for a lunch plate and then being charged $2 for naan (some of the best I've ever had). I've never paid extra for bread with such a meal. It's sort of like the Chinese restaurant that charges extra for won-ton soup on their lunch menu - won't go back or the salad place that charges $.25 for crackers! I'll go back there because the garlic bread is free - go figure. What do you think the response would be if Cafe Express started charging for their condiments? Also, haven't restaurants woken up to the fact that instead of paying $2 for a glass of iced tea people are just getting water? Maybe it's just me, but I won't stand for the nickle and diming.

We took our friend and her husband to Yatra's for her birthday and the food was just spectacular! We had the lamb empanadas and simosas for appetizers and not a drop of the sauce or crumb of bread was left behind. For dinner we split the chicken masala, goan curry, and saag w/ lamb...just delightful. We were somewhat reluctant to dine here given we are fans of Madras and Khyber, but this is now going to be one of favs and can't wait to take more friends.

Regarding price -- for six of us the tab (w/ tip) came to $250. That included 9 beers, two appetizers, and 6 dinners. I don't think it's cheap, but it's not outrageous for 6 people.

Goat biryani and goat curry I had was excellent. The goat meat is very fresh and cooked properly. True Indian biryani and curry taste.

I was disappointed to see that the previous comments on this restaurant were less than favourable.

I have not eaten at the restaurant but I have had take out from here a few times. I found the staff to be very nice on the phone when I called in my order. The food was ready when they said it would be ready. I have never been disappointed with the quality or taste of the food. I am going there for lunch today and will write about that experience afterwards.

They need to start doing delivery through.

I love Indian food and I work downtown so I was very excited when Yatra opened. My first couple of trips were good - good food and substantial portions but a bit pricey. But now that its gotten popular, the service is EXTREMELY slow and the portions are shrinking so the value isn't there. I paid $6 for a basket of garlic naan! On a lunch special, I would think bread would come with the entree anyway but to charge over $1 per piece of bread is ridiculous. And at a downtown spot you'd expect fast lunch service (surely they can't be cooking to order) - but each of the last 2 trips I made it took over 90 minutes to get Chicken Tikka Masala and Spinach and Pea Soup. I really enjoy the food but I can't afford to go back - I don't have 2 hours to devote to lunch and its definitely not worth a $20 lunch.

I had a early dinner at Yatra's ( 6ish ). Service was average as well as the food. The meal was average, however after I received the bill it was apparent that I was charged for things that normally are included with the meal. For example, some Basmati rice was charged to my bill ( about $11 ). Though I specified that didn't want bread they gave it to me anyway and charged me for it. A simple meal cost me $50 ( without alcohol ).

We ate here on a Saturday night at about 8ish. Cons--We were extremely disappointed in how slow everything was from bringing our drinks, taking our order, and bringing/taking our checks. Our staff was not friendly and were riding on borderline rude. For so little people in the restaurant, we should have received exceptional service. Food was okay. Pros---They have a great atmosphere, not crowded, nice and quiet.

A group of my girlfriends and I went to dinner at Yatra last night and it was fabulous! I have been before, but not since they changed the decor and "image". Our scene is normally Ibiza or Benjy's but this hidden, hot little downtown destination is definetly a group favorite now! The dramatic red walls and sophisticated bar made me feel like I was at a super-swanky Manhattan restaurant right here in the 713. The food was excellent as well....very cultured and a wonderful presentation. We even stayed for martinis afterwards! I had the Mango martini and it was delicious! In all of our opinions....Yatra is the perfect place for anyone... both the young, sassy movers and shakers and the romanitc love birds! We will be regulars.

I also went last night (with the group below) and I am a huge fan now as well. It was my first time to try Indian food and I really enjoyed Yatra's dishes. I highly recommend the spicy calamari as an appetizer and the Chicken Tikkamasala as an entree. As a group we ordered Saag Panir (cooked cheese)...its was amazing with wine! Overall....quaint, warm venue, outstanding menu, and a lovely dinner experience.

** I also enjoyed parking a little ways away and walking to take in downtown ( I never get out that way). A good date night would be walking to Yatra then stopping for coffee at Cafe Express or Timpano.

I used to be a regular for lunch at Yatra, the past two weeks the portions have gotten progressively smaller. The food is still good. I've met and spoken with he owner on a couple of different occassions,he's rude, and not very personalble.

On the other hand their Butterfly Lounge is great. Good music, smoking hot bartenders and nice choice of liquors.

We went to Butterfly High, the same as this restaurant and had a horrible experience. First, we were the only ones in the restaurant on a Saturday night. Scary sign, but we stayed for dinner and drinks. The food was fine, not outstanding by any means. I could get the exact same for less cost with better service from a million other places in Houston. But more than the mediocrity of the food, the service was absolutely horrible. It was slow, unresponsive and inconsistent. The most ridiculous part is because of our service problems, the manager comped our meal. Sounds great, but a charge still showed up on my credit card - the card I first gave them for drinks at the bar before dinner. Once I contacted the restaurant regarding the mistake, I got passed to four different managers then finally the owner who denied the situation and refused to reconcile it. I would not recommend this restaurant and bar to anyone.

As I am in Houston on business from the UK for the next six weeks, I decided last night to introduce some American friends of mine to the tastes of Indian cuisine as they had never experienced it before. We kicked-off our meal with vegetable samosa's which were delightfully delicious in their taste, followed by our main course where we took the advice of our waiter and opted for the Chef's Platter which is a combination of chicken tandoori, kofta (spicy minced lamb type sausage), Goan shrimp, chicken tikka masala, lamb rojan gohst, lentils, sag aloo, pilau rice and naan bread. As my American colleagues had never sampled Indian food before, they were very pleasantly suprised by the various different flavours that their taste buds were experiencing and thoroughly enjoyed their introduction to Indian food especially the chicken tikka masala, lamb rojan gohst and the sag aloo which they raved about. The meal was completed with a bottle Californian - Merlot which complemented the taste of the dishes we were savouring. So if you are looking for excellent food / wine at reasonable prices along with good service and set in a friendly relaxed atmosphere, then that is what you will find when you dine out at the Yatra Brasserie

Yatra Brassiere is probably one of the finest Indian Restaurants I have ever eaten in. The service is impeccable, the staff are friendly and prices are very affordable. The consistency of food served at Yatra goes to show that the kitchen staff consist of professional chefs and produce mouth watering food. For lunch I have their Lamb Roganjosh with rice and for dinner their Lamb chops and Tandoori prawns are out of this world. The Nan bread is probably the best I have ever in my life. My wife goes crazy over the yellow dall and she keeps trying to extract the recipe from the owner but with very little success.

Their recently opened lounge bar, Butterfly High, is a great way of finishing off fine meal. One can have nightcap after dinner listening to some great music. It?s about time that we had such an establishment in down town Houston.

Ok, so the last reviews are completely inaccurate. I have been to Yatra many times, as well as the Butterfly lounge next door (owned and run by the same people) and I have never had anything but wonderful service and have never been less than impressed by the quality and flavor of the food! I have tried many of the other Indian restaurants in Houston, but this one is the closest to my house and by far the best one. I?ve had lunch and dinner there and both were great. The ambiance is really good and I have to disagree with the ratings; I think it is a really good place for groups as well. The staff is very happy to accommodate as many people as I bring with me. My favorite dish for lunch is the curry chicken?it is more than enough food for the price (I think it is $12) and its very traditional (not what you would find in your local Chinese restaurant or something). I?ve had several dishes at dinner and they have all been great. I am glad to see this place thriving (lunches are very busy now, and the last time I was in for dinner it was almost full). Its just an overall good place. Its ?pretty?, the staff is friendly, the food is fresh and delicious, and the wine list is good as well! Try it out, you will see what I mean!

Cons: parking can be difficult, but its not too bad if you are familiar with the area

.

The place has 2 sections, a dining and a lounge area. The food is BAD. The samosa chaat (appetizer) is the only nice tasting dish on the menu. The main course, be it vegetarian or non-vegetarian is really bad, and extremely over priced. I do not recommend it.

However, the lounge area is trendy and probably will be a good place for a quiet date, or even a private party. But I would check the prices first!!

Also, be prepared to have gratuity of 20% included in your check.
I would not recommend it at all.

Based on the other reviews, I ate at Yatra's last night. Very disappointing. There are a number of better Indian restaurants in this town that have good service and a decent selection of beer & wines. The sag paneer tasted of commercial curry powder and too much of it at that. The flavor of the korma, usually a reliable choice, was average and not worth ordering again. Our waiter forgot to bring us our appetizers and when made aware of his mistake, he wanted to bring them after our meal! No adjustments to the bill were made to make up for his oversight and give us a reason to return. Yatra's has a week selection of beers (Bud or Bud Light) and was out of Indian beers the night we were there which is hard to fathom. I'm left to wonder if the other reviewers on this site have ever had really good Indian food or good service. I won't be going back to Yatra's.

Pros: One of the few places Downtown offering Indian food

Cons: Not very good and too expensive for what you get

.

"Two thumbs enthusiastically way up" for Yatra! Great menu and tasty dishes! And finally an Indian restaurant downtown!! Not even a different Midtown Indian restaurant lasted long, so glad to have a place to go in the area!

I went for dinner on a Saturday night....made reservations but did not need them in the early evening (around 7pm). The restaurant is modern in decor and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

We started with the Keema Empanadas for only $ 5. Wonderful filled with lamb and spices.....included three empanadas and two wonderful sauces. Came out hot and tasty! If you're really hungy, I would recommend ordering 2 appetizers for 2 people.

I tried a really good Indian beer that I had never tried. I can't recall the name, but it started with a "D". Very good....had a citrus taste, but not overpowering. Many people were having wine at the restaurant. There was a small wine menu that was brought out with the dinner menu.

For entrees, we had the Rogan Josh for $ 14 and a chicken dish which was called Chicken C****. Unforntunately I cannot remember the name, but it had a coconut sauce that was out of this world!! Not overpowering......and perfectly spiced! The Rogan Josh had wonderful flavors with it's onion gravy, tender lamb....perfect!

We got naan and rice which were a small extra charge...Probably needed slightly more rice than what was given....but it worked out ok with both the naan and rice together.

The rest of the menu looked wonderful! Can't wait to go try lunch (unfortunately only open for lunch on weekdays). There are some Indian wraps which sounded wonderful and very reasonably priced!!

My only small complaint was that service could've been slightly better. After getting the entrees, I would expect the waiter to come by at least once to check up and see if anything else was needed. Otherwise, I would highly recommend this restaurant! Different and great....one of my top 3 in town for sure!!

I?ve been to Yatra three times. The menu has now expanded and does not disappoint. I have had: Sag Paneer (very creamy with large chunks of paneer) Chicken Korma (the sauce was out of this world) Goan Shrimp, Navratan Korma (very thick and creamy with lots of beans) and Daal (nice spices). I?ve had the bread basket but would recommend ordering a specific naan unless you want to try the variety. The service was good and atmosphere buzzy during the lunch hour. I would advise booking a table at lunch time and/or allowing for a little longer than a quick in and out lunch. The prices are consistent with other Indian restaurants but far too expensive for lunch when you add rice and naan. Salad and rice may or may not be included, it?s been inconsistent. Overall, a much needed and welcome addition to downtown Houston.

I agree with all the reviews, food tastes great, but I think its too expensive. Unless you are going for team lunches paid for by employer.
Be prepared to shell out $15 for a simple lunch.

Be prepared to shell out $15 for a simple lunch.

Good location near Downtown Theatre District, so it's a very good option for pre/post-Theatre dinner. Decor is modern and comfortable. Menu is not too extensive, but caters for all tastes ( btw good Vegetarian options). Service was good and attentive( without being overly so). Lamb in the Rogan Josh was superb - possibly best I've had in Houston.

Fantastic food and a funky atmosphere. This place is a nice addition to the downtown restaurants. It'll be even better when they get some of the service kinks worked out.

Pros: Great food

Cons: Somewhat slow service at lunch

The food here is delightful! Most of the dishes are interesting 'fusion' dishes and taste great. I came during lunchtime and was in and out within an hour (which is great for a sitdown place in downtown during lunchtime). The staff was attentive as well and kept checking up on us to see if everything was okay.

Ok, let me start this by saying that I am not a fan of Indian food. I got talked in to going to this restaurant by one of my co-workers. I have to say that my opinions have now changed. This place is absolutely fabulous. I now realize that I should not have based my opinion on the fact that I didn't like the food at the one Indian restaurant that I had ever tried. I don't really know how to describe it but the food at Yatra had the best flavor and was just great. Thank you Yatra for opening my eyes and showing me what REAL indian food tastes like!!! Will definitely be going back!

As the Concierge of a upscale boutique hotel in Downtown Houston you tend to eat at a lot of restaurants. I came across this jewel by walking on Main Street, and happen to stop in. I have never seen an Indian Restaurant in downtown, so I thought what a great thing to make Houston even more diverse.

As I entered something was different about the place, it was not your traditional Indian restaurant. It was chic, new and happening. They had up-beat music a great atmosphere and a very cool theme inside the restaurant. I really liked what they have done with the restaurant. I call Yatra, ?Indian Fusion? because of its menu. They have your traditional Indian dishes and they also mix Mexican food with Indian food. You may think it may not taste good, but you are mistaken. It is delightful! My favorite dish is Butter Chicken in any Indian place but they did not have it on the menu. I asked the manager he said the chef would make it for me. It was the Best Butter Chicken I have ever had! He also made me fresh cut fries!

I would definitely try there Samosa Chaat, its not be missed. There Seekh Keebab Burritos are excellent. They have Jumbo Prawns which are delicious and you can never go wrong with a curry.

Overall, I believe Yatra Brasserie combines excellent food and impeccable customer service.
