I've visited Coffee Groundz a number of times over the past year and get mixed results every time. Their lattes are basic and usually aren't worth commenting over. I'd say they are about on an even playing field with Starbucks. However, it's always better to stick with your local coffee shop rather going corporate. When I went by this last evening I went with just a basic cup of coffee and was very pleased. It was definitely better than Starbucks. It had a good rich roasty taste.
Apart from the coffee I have always been treated well by the employees, though, I've never gotten a smile out of anyone. Like KitchenINC says in her review the recent renovations have done the place a disservice. Im not sure what they were going for but they seemed to have sterilized the shop from being comfy or a hangout. I wouldn't mind driving through for a cup but I wouldn't be inclined to hang out there anymore.

Pros: Good basic cup of coffee

Cons: Not attractive

I still remember my first visit to Coffee Groundz. On a business trip from NYC, I needed a place to kill time between a meeting downtown and dinner with a friend. He suggested I check out Specs Midtown and somehow I found myself at the newly opened CG due to my keen ability to sniff out a good local coffee shop. I was immediately impressed: locally owned and sourced caf with excellent gelato that ALSO served beer and wine, open late ?? wow! When I moved to Houston later that year I chose a midtown apartment partially because I liked what Coffee Groundz stood for and thought the trend was spreading in the neighborhood.
During my first year in Houston I spent a good amount of time there. I sampled every Trentino gelato, read many a Houston Press and got quite a bit of work done. Of course, at the time, midtown was changing from the urban community I had moved into to THE nightlife hotspot and the frat party that my sidewalks became scared me off. I moved to the Heights and settled in at places like Antidote and Catalina.
This past Thursday, passing through midtown after a happy hour, I decided to stop at CG to satisfy a sweet tooth with the peanut butter cake ball Robb Walsh had recently touted in his List of 100 Best Houston Foods. I??d heard they??d undergone some renovations but was a bit taken aback by the changes. Gone were all the intimate corners of comfy booths where you could get lost in latte and laptop. New and unimproved CG stared at me with a cold and uninviting emptiness. The Thursday evening crowds that had once scared me off were long gone save for a few giggling students (so annoying I wanted to beat them) and sparse but ever faithful geeks (the caf is a mecca for the local tech community).
Service was friendly as usual and coffee was fine, although my cake ball turned out to be more of a fail ball; not much actual peanut butter flavor but more Reese??s like peanuty sweetness enrobed in lackluster chocolate. Why, Robb? Why the fail ball? Alas, that is another story.
More disheartening was sitting back and observing the gutted Coffee Groundz. The space genuinely seemed to be telling me that it didn??t want me there. In gutting its walls, CG seemed to have gutted a bit of its soul.
As CG continues to host community events such as the Noah??s Kitchen fundraiser, I hope that they can retain a bit of that neighborhood caf vibe that initially drew me to midtown.

I had a gift card to the Coffe Groundz and after finally finding it my boyfriend and I ordered hot chocolate, coffee and 2 paninis. The chocolate i got right away; the coffee had to be asked for again.
We then sat and waited for our sandwhiches...for 30 minutes! There wasn't a line and the drive through was empty. When i went up to check they had just forgotten all about it. Needless to say i asked for my money back, which they did...i gave my gift card to someone sitting there since i have no plans to be back.

Great coffee place and has drivethru. You can order breakfast food, lunch, alocholic drinks and coffee etc. They also serve soy and sugar free syrups for those with special dietary needs. I like the soy sugar free toffee latte and the panini.

Instead of going to the clubs and bars around the area I met up with friends at this place. The location is great and pretty much int he middle of the night life, but thieir prices are great. I think they had $2 beers which is very odd for that area. Prepare to be shocked, but they have a parking lot and it's free! Amazing! I guess on weekends they also close the drive through and turn it into an outdoor patio so it's a great people watching spot...The service IS a little strange like others have described because I placed my order and the girl proceeded to help the others and then went back to get them, but forgot mine. I know they're the anti-starbucks, but they should take a book out of their page and have team work....there is no I in T E A M guys ;) After that, they were actually pretty good, coming to clean off tables, extra bottles, etc. Their food is good too oh, and free wifi but i have a feeling they may not like it if you sit there without ordering lol.

I've been going to the Coffee Groundz now for about a month, at least once a day for coffee. About half the time I use the drive-through window, which apparently gets priority for service. Reason being, it often takes quite some time to get your coffee when going inside. There always seems to be two or three people working, but inevitably there's only one doing all the serving. I'm not sure if they have a major team work problem or that's just the way the management wants them to do things. At any rate, because I'm a regular, the employees know what I want, and the brewed coffee is excellent with a good variety. If you go here, use the drive-through and you'll be served quicker.

I went to this store for the first time a few weeks ago and I really liked it. I wish they had more locations. I liked them better than starbucks. If I was closer to them they would be my place of choice

I received a coupon in the mail for this place, so I thought, hey, I am getting so tired of Starbuck's. I spend a lot of time in coffeshops, as I always stop in one every day to check my e-mail, relax, before getting back to work.

So I ordered a large cappuccino and a blueberry muffin. The guy took the order, then took my money, then proceeded to wait on everyone else in line. I stood there, and stood there, and stood there....FINALLY, the same guy who took the order goes over to make my coffee drink. Um, there were 2 other people working there, why weren't they making coffee drinks? So I fix it the way I like it, take a sip, and it was HORRIBLE. So, I have to go back in line to ask the same guy to add milk to it (figured if I just had a bunch of milk, it would be drinkable). So he stands there like I'm speaking Chinese, and finally adds the milk. It was still undrinkable. I thought, I'll just sit and enjoy the atmosphere, which IS very nice. Atmosphere is SO much better than Starbuck's.

Oh, and the blueberry muffin, which the guy heated for me (very nice of him) was AWFUL. I took a few bites and realized it wasn't worth the calories, so I threw it, and the horrible coffee drink, away.

So sorry, I WANTED to like this place so much! But alas, I'm back to Starbuck's...

I can't believe that they have alcohol. I always wanted to own a place like this. My wife and I went there on a Saturday night and she had a glass of wine and I had a cup of coffee with some whiskey, just fantastic. I work in downtown and always pass it by and I decided to go through the drive thru to get some coffee and its way better than Starbucks, thats for damn sure. That morning the friendly barista told me to come back for happy hour and I asked him, "what you serve alcohol as well?" Since then I go 5 times a week in the morning drive thru and at least 3 times a month at night before a play or something else my wife drags me to.
