This is my first review because I have never felt the need to give one until now. I have been a customer of Affordable Tire and Brake for approximately 8 years and have done thousands of dollars of business with them. This is my recent experience.

Back in July 2012 I took my vehicle to Affordable Tire and Brake to be inspected regarding some startup issues I was having with my vehicle. Everytime I left my vehicle over night it would have difficulty starting, frequently requiring a jump start. Once it was started, it would run all day with no issues and then the following morning would have the same problem. My battery is not old, they replaced it in 2010. When I went to Affordable Tire and Brake they told me that they didn't see a problem and that maybe something was being left on all night that was draining the battery down.

Fast forward to a few days ago, I take my car in for an oil change and when they are working on it they notice difficulty starting my car. They change the battery on warranty and send me on my way. The next day I am driving and my car shuts off while on SR-522 in a 60mph stretch in the left lane, blocking traffic. I take my jump pack out of the trunk, which most people don't just have lying around, connect it and it starts and runs for a couple minutes and then dies. By this time, state patrol is on the scene and helps push my vehicle to the side. We jump start my vehicle with a DOT vehicle that arrives and it fails to run for more than a few minutes. Mind you, before it would jump start and run all day fine, meaning they made the problem even worse. I end up being stranded there miles away from Affordable Tire and Brake for over 3 hours. I am forced to pay to have my car towed to them. They inspect my car and call me later and say I need a new alternator and serpentine belt, the cost was $645 without tax. The cost of the alternator alone was $455. I am forced to pay it because I have no other option at this point since my car doesn't even run. After paying, I felt like they charged me more than they should have. I started calling the other Affordable Tire and Brake locations to get quotes on the same service. The price I was quoted at the Ballard location for the same service was $324 without tax. That's half the price of the University District location. I then called the Rainier location and they quoted me $557 without tax. I informed Corey of the price I was quoted at only the Ballard location and he said he would call me back in 5 minutes. I can only assume he called the Ballard location to find out what was said. He called back and said that the reason I was charged double the price was because the Ballard Manager had quoted me for a 120 amp alternator, when they had installed a 90 amp alternator on my vehicle. Apparently according to him, the 90 amp alternator costs double the price of the 120 amp alternator, which is why it cost double. I searched online, the 90 amp alternator they installed on my vehicle is priced at $172.95. They charged me a minimum of $282 more for the alternator than it costs. God knows what extra discount they get when purchasing parts because they are a mechanic shop. When I complained about the price to Corey he said, "Look we aren't charging you much for labor just $140. The expense here is the $455 alternator and we can't do anything about that, it's the price it's sold at." It seems like they charge a normal price for labor and then overcharge for parts to avoid suspicion because people are more likely to argue over labor costs than part costs. Oh yea, they also took out the brand new battery they installed a couple days ago and re-installed the original battery I had from 2010, they failed to mention that when they returned me my car. I am no mechanic but the constant jump starting I have been doing can't be good on a battery. I assume my battery would be in better condition if they had diagnosed the problem back in July, saving me from having to jump start my car once every few days. Just my two cents, take it for what it's worth. I will never return to Affordable Tire and Brake. When I told me friends that go to Affordable Tire and Brake what happened, they told me of similar problems they experienced with them overcharging. We agreed to never return and will be giving our business to a shop that we can trust. Why go to a place if you have any doubts about them? Car repair is all about trust. If you can't trust your mechanic, you shouldn't use them--otherwise you can be overcharged over and over again or pay for services and repairs you didn't need--without even knowing it.

I got jacked for $710 for an, at the very most , $300 repair & then they tried to con me with smooth talk that I wasn't being jacked.

I recently bought a used Toyota Corolla wagon that had a front end hum that likely was due to a bearing. Since my regular mechanic of nearly 20 years no longer has a shop and does only mobile tune up repairs I went on line and sought out front end shops. After having read several good reviews for this place on line I decided to take it to them. I gulped when I they quoted me the $710 but trusting that was what it would take to do the work I said 'yes'. When I heard back from my regular mechanic she said she was shocked that they were charging that much and that a while ago her niece had been similarly overcharged by so called "Affordable" Tire & Brake in the U Dist in addition to being told that her struts need to be replaced when her aunt, the mechanic, had just replaced them!!

They replaced the whole left front axle & CV joint and the bearing. While the bearing was obviously worn it was not evident aside from a torn boot that the whole axle needed to be replaced. They tried to justify it based on some VERY light surface rust I could wipe off with my finger.

To add to the insult I now have to pay for a $48 parking ticket they incurred since they have to park the vehicles they are repairing on the street. They made a big deal out of deducting the cost of the ticket from my bill when CLEARLY I am paying for the ticket and almost twice what I should have paid for the repair. I was told they get several tickets like that a day. Obviously this cost gets folded into the inflated prices they charge.

They are excruciatingly polite and have a very clean shop but they are dishonest. Don't patronize them and don't be like me, in a rush to get the work done. Shop around, find a small independent mechanic to do your work!

I took my car up the street to a national chain advertising brakes for $179 and by the time the brakes were done it cost $740 and the car took 12 hrs longer than it was supposed to. I won't go in to the inconvinience trying to find a ride to work at the last minute and taking a bus back to pick up my car the next day. They didn't even tell me until I was picking up my car and my ride had already left. They didn't even seem to care.

The very next day my brakes started making this terrible screeching noise when ever I stepped on the brakes. I took it to Affordable Tire and Brake. First of all the place was clean bright and seemed much better organized and professional. They checked out my brakes and showed me what was wrong. Turned out to be a clip thing not put on in the right spot making this noise. You could tell the guy didn't want to say anything bad about the other place but I sure did. They fixed it in 5 minutes and then the part I couldn't believe they refused to let me pay them ANYTHING! For sure I have found a new repair shop.

Great prices and great service!.
First time I came here was about a year ago they sold me some good tires at a surprisingly good price. I was pleasantly impressed that they put them on and got me out of there earlier than they promised by about 15 mins. About 6 mos. later I had a flat. I called they said they'd fix it free and I was pleased that they actually fixed it free and surprisingly fast. A few days ago my brakes started making noise my budget is really tight right now so I went to a place that has a reputation for cheap repairs and they gave me a price of $400 to fix my brakes. Way more than I expected and I did not have the money. I called my Dad to borrow some and he suggested I take it to Affordable Tire. I forgot they did brakes and I was very satisfied with my tires so I paid the $40 the other shop charged for the inspection and took it to these guys.

They fixed my brakes for $140 with tax, no hassle no drama, car was done when it was supposed to be and works great! I won't forget they do all kinds of repairs next time. I didn't even have to borrow money from my Dad.

I was looking for the phone number online and I saw some trashy reviews. I have been here a couple times and I have always been happy with the service I got including the new tires I got 2 days ago. Best price in town and good pleasant people to deal with.

I have gotten tires here several times unlike most tire stores I have been to in the past they have never tried to push me into anything. Some times my car needs some other work. They always take me out and show me and don't talk down to me because I am a woman.

The people who work here are genuinely nice, friendly guys.

Well, as much as you can love spending money on your car. I have been going here over 10 years and have recommended lots of freinds and relatives. We have always been very pleased with the work and especially the prices.

I live in the U-district, so this shop is close by. Every time I took my car in for a light bulb or to get a flat tire fixed they never wanted to charge me. They are always busy but seem genuinely happy to help me out.

A couple weeks ago my brake light came on while I was going to work. There is a shop next to my job so I asked them to check my brakes. They charged me $40 to tell me I needed to spend $600 more to fix my brakes. Being a single mom I just don't have that kind of extra money in the budget. We had a vacation planned and I couldn't take an unsafe car or afford to fix it. They told me my car wasn't safe to drive and really all but demanded I fix my brakes right then.

I just wasn't convinced they were being truthful. I called the guys at Affordable and Tony said he could get me in tomorrow.

Tony (the owner) suggested that I hang around and take a look at what the car needed. Sure enough I did need a new brake cylinder but I didn't need all of the other things the other shop had tried to force me to fix. It cost me $200 and I went on vacation. And they didn't even charge to inspect my brakes.

You can bet that this is my car repair shop.

I have been going to this shop since I was going to the U of WA in 1999. Now I live in Lake Stevens and I still go there. I have never been dissatisfied with the service or products they sell. It seems like they always do a little extra, Fix a burned out bulb or a nail in a tire while its there and don't charge. Their prices are always the lowest around and they have always fixed my problem on the first visit. I was recommended to them by a friend and have recommended them to many others and I have never heard anything bad about them.

This shop has a classic "used car dealer" measure of integrity. First, they "lost" my chrome wheel hubs when I bought new tires there, and would not admit it, then only offered to pay for half the price of replacing them. And in the process of getting new tires and wheels, they did not use the right kind of lug bolts, which it turns out only had room for the bolts turning 2-3 threads, very unsafe. And, when my brake cylinders pooped out and started leaking after a year, they would not refund the original work, only offered a store "credit" which really is of no value if you dont want to go back there again. It turns out from taking the brake repair job to a VW shop, that the rear brakes were installed improperly and basically weren't even working for the past year, which explains the loose mushy feeling in the brakes ever since installation.
I cant complain about buying tires here, but dont take your VW there, and dont expect them to stand up to their work or be honest about it.
