Church isn't what it used to be - at least at the small church of St. Cuthbert's Episcopal Church in the Oakland Hills. This congregation is small but very lively and progressive led by the novelist and poet, the Rev. Pamela Cranston. For one, they have a weekly Christian-Zen Contemplative Mass every Sunday at 8 a.m. with body prayer, chanting, and 20 minutes of silent meditation combined with Holy Communion. Their regularly service, at 10 a.m. is lively and inclusive, with all sorts of music from traditional hymns, Gregorian Chant, contemporary music to Gospel. The people are welcoming and diverse - where nearly a third of the congregation is LBGT and a third multi-ethnic. It feels like a warm family when you're there and the open worship space exudes a deep sense of peace. The Spirit is alive and well in this place. It's worth checking out.
