Yes the Carrie MUrray NAture Center could use some extra funding, but hey its Baltimore City. I love the center, its free and fun and they have great activities there. There bug fest is so wonderful and free. This is a wonderful resource for kids and their parents, a nature center in Baltimore City is a great thing. I am having my sons second birthday party there. So if you want to complain write them a check or go and volunteer.

BTY I have been going to Leakin Park and Gywnn Falls for years, almost every weekend, and LOVE IT. The people i meet are friendly and its like having a park to yourself. It is not a dumping ground for bodies, but a wonderful resource for the city residents. I encourage you to check it out yourself and draw your own conclusions.

I'm going tonight for a VIP tour and I'll give the real scoop.
Hal CS, OMG, you sound negative from the git.
Move the animals closer to the highway?
r u nuts?
they are animals, not people, you'd prob. have them dress in clothes too and drink coffee, along with the noise and pollution you're trying to get them closer to.
Dumping ground for murderers????
Are you just reading too many Hannibal Lector books or do you actually have basis in what you're writing about?!
As I said, I will go tonight, and give the scoop this weekend.
Hal CS.... jeez! get a clue.
I know people who speak highly of the place... so I 'll give it 4stars to start on word of mouth, I'll put my rating down this weekened.
Ok; Edit update:
I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
The staff was super nice, helpful and informative.
Animals smell is to be expected, they help injured animals, birds especially, and wow, what raptors they have.
THE biggest Raven I've ever seen, and I live by Loch Raven, all the birds of prey were awesome. The chipmunks were sleeping though, so I'll have to pay a visit again to see one of my fav. animals.
I may write more later after another visit, but the point is, I would definitely visit there again.

I read Hal C S..' review of the nature center and really disagree. I recently visited the Carrie Murray Nature Center and hiked on the trails. Yes, some of the trails are a little rough, but winter has just ended and they were actively working on the trails while I was there hiking. The building inside did have a slight smell, however it is also full of animals so it is to be expected. The animals are very well taken care of. They are all rescued and abandoned animals from owners that just couldn't or wouldn't take care of them. Who else is going to take care of them and attend to their special needs? When visiting the Nature Center, I never once felt uncomfortable around any of the birds and snakes inside the building. All the animals were in cages that were locked or secure. The only way they could get out is if they were taken out. The Center also has a beautiful array of birds of prey in an outdoor display/caging area. I inquired about the condition of the driveway. The Nature Center is waiting for the city to repave it. The city is in the process, but seems to be taking its time (like cities usually do!). As to there not being any gates, I noted a gate at the top of their driveway, and another at the top of a road off their parking lot.I hike the trails around the Nature Center all the time. I have never run into any one or thing that has made me uncomfortable. The only people I have run into were other hikers and the Trail Police that patrol the trails to keep them safe. This center and park is the closest thing to "the great outdoors" that a lot of city folk get. I am familiar with the woods and people who work hard to keep the animals healthy and the woods clean. If you see something in need of repair or upkeep, try volunteering some time or making a donation.

The Carrie Murray Nature Center clearly needs some funds and hands-on labor to restore its polish. It's a diamond in the rough. Though the grounds were overgrown and the building dusty and a little messy, our visit this week was fantastic. There's a love for and investment in the resident creatures, and that really shines.

My children were enthralled with their up-close experience with the animals in the main building and the outdoor-housed birds of prey were fantastic. We went during a weekday in the early afternoon and had the entire place to ourselves.

The gentleman caring for the animals (resident manager?) took time to share with us about the animals and allowed us to closely observe him trimming the beak and claws of two birds.

We'll be back once their insect collection is ready for the public.

The last time I attend the center I felt uneasy with all the birds and snakes about. The over all smell didn't please me, So I decided to take a walk on one of their many nature trails. Little did I know it would turn into a nightmare. The trails where not well maintain and due to the past thunderstorms, heavy rains had fell many trees onto some parts of the trails blocking paths and destroying some bridges. The main road entering the nature center is very deplorable and could use some major repairs. Over all, I would say tear everything down and start over. The whole area needs to be rethunk and moved closer to the main highway. Because the lack of parking and space, the nature center doesn't get many visitors. Updated: Jan 21st 09, The past few weeks, the woods around the center have become a "duping ground" for murders. There is no protection and no gated areas.. thus creating a prime location for these murders. I would not recommend this location for any reason.
