went here twice and left disappointed each time. The first time, I went for a cut. The cut was fine (though it seemed to take FOREVER) but I hated the way she styled my hair. I don't like leaving a salon feeling like I look ugly - aren't they supposed to make you look BETTER? The reason for the disappointment is that I THOROUGHLY explained how I wanted my hair styled - and that I DIDN'T want the typical uber-silky round-brushed to death look. I have baby fine hair, and I do NOT like my hair styled that way. I am sure other fine-haired ladies would agree: the last thing we want is the flat-to-the-head style, and when baby fine hair is styled to look silky, that is what it does. I explained that I wanted my hair styled haphazardly, to NOT use a round brush or any brush until it's almost dry, because my hair looks better that way. Well, within seconds of turning on the blow-dryer, she had the brush going over my hair aiming for that damn silky look. I just sighed and sat there fuming until she finished. Surprise, surprise, I hated the outcome. The cut was okay, but I hated that she did not listen to a thing I said when it came to styling my hair. And to any hairstylist, take note: Hair that is already fine and silky does NOT want to be styled that way. WHY is this such a difficult concept for hairstylists to understand? It's frustrating. I am not a hairstylist, and yet I can style my hair with volume and texture - you would think it'd be a piece of cake for hairstylists. Anyway, this was strike #1.

The second time I went (I decided to give her another chance and go for highlights), while she was doing my hair, she was recommending products for this or for that. She was also apparently appraising my skin, and suggested some products for this problem or that problem. I felt like saying, "Anything else? Are you going to suggest I drop a few pounds, too?" Corrct me if I am wrong, but I go to salons and spas to feel BETTER about myself, not to have someone tell me I basically look like a troll. At the end of the visit, silky hair and all (yes, again), she charged me $50 more than what I had been quoted beforehand. This was the dealbreaker. Don't tell me it's going to be one price and then charge me another.

I haven't been back since.

I went to Maureen for the brazilian Blowout and I was very nervous about the whole thing. When I got there (she has a really cute and professional salon) she talked to me for about a half hour about my hair color to make sure we got the right one for me before we started. The haircolor was perfect and it is very conditioning to your hair. The brazilian blowout was way more than I had expected it did not make my hair flat at all and it looked amazing!! After having very Italian curly frizzy hair for so long I couldn't imagine it could ever look like this. Maureen is a unique stylist because she will tell you exactly what she thinks about your hair and why and it really makes sense....I was trying to grow out my hair and I let her cut it about 3 inches because it was just looking thin and frazzly...now it looks great!! She was explaining to me that some people have a longer hair life than others and told me that there are things I can do to take care of y hair so it doesn't look like that again. The information she knows about hair is very refreshing, my mother is a hair stylist so I thought I knew everything about it when I got in the chair and it turned out I was lost. All of her products are sulfate free and very good for your hair, they don't strip the color. She really takes the time out to explain to you what you need to know, and won't tell you what you want to hear she'll tell you what you need to hear. When you leave her ace your color and salon, you will leave with the best look for YOU, for your face your color and length. She does a great job and is very kind and personable, it is nice to have a stylist ho actually cares about you and your look and doesn't just tell you what you want to hear. Maureen has a passion for what she does and it really shows in her work.

I went to Maureen for the Brazilian Blowout. I had lots of reservations and questions about the process and also going to a new hairdresser. She was very patient and accomodating.
I have ethnic hair and haven't had a relaxer in 3 years. I would recommend the Brazilian Blowout for anyone, but if you are a woman of color who likes straight hair but doesn't want chemicals-- this is a great alternative. Maureen did an awesome job. I went on a trip after the treatment where the temperature was 93 and very humid. My hair remained soft and did not get as poofy or unmanageable like it normally would have. I went on water rides and while it was wet the ends were a little wavy but straightened when it air dried. I went to the gym and the steam room and did not have to do much to my hair at all afterwards. This treatment is exactly what I've been looking for. Thanks Maureen!

I will not trust my hair with anyone else. I drive 40 minutes just to have Maureen cut my hair. I have always hated my thin fine hair, and Maureen has made my hair more than bearable. I still hate my hair, but I love my cut and stylist.

I really like how Maureen doesnt BS and gets straight to the point, about what ur hair needs and what others might tell you, that is totally not true about your hair. I was able to get a really good consultation , and talked to her for 10 min about what i had in mind over the phone. I dont think any salon or person in that business, ever talked to me more than 30 seconds on the phone. That was enough for me to refer her, and I cant wait for my friends to go see HER!!!!

I love the idea of supporting a woman-owned business, esp. a Mom-owned business. More women should feel as comfortable as Maureen to arrange their work in such a way that they can spend time with their children.
She is very very knowledgeable in dealing with damaged hair. I completely trust her experience. She does not use same old tired routine for chemical processing and has lots of helpful hints and ideas. It is also clear to me that she is looking beyond the "day at the salon" experience. Maureen talked to me in detail about our plans for my mane as far as a year in advance (i.e. how to colour, condition and perm, how frequently, in what order, how to prevent problems). I drive to see her from North side Chicago, and it is worth the trip! I would (and did) recommend her in a heartbeat.

Maureen is amazing! She told me things about my hair that no one has ever told me about...and she was RIGHT ON! She took the time to give me a through consultation, unlike anything I've ever had at ANY salon (and I've been to A LOT of salons) before. She initially was offering a FREE HAIRCUT...NO STRINGS ATTACHED, which I found a little too good to be true--especially for someone who's supposedly been doing hair for 18 years. So, I checked out her site to find out more, which was a simple MySpace page. After checking out her credentials (as I wouldn't let just ANYONE work on my hair, regardless of the price)...and then seeing all the COMMENTS that others had left, I called her. When I inquired about the "FREE CUT & STYLE," She said that she had moved south (after selling her Salon & Spa in Crystal Lake, called Distinction Salon Spa), and that she needed to rebuild her clientele. I thought, "Wow, this person must really be confident about her abilities." That was more than enough for me to give her a try. I am so glad I did!

Another thing I liked about her salon is that she has a children's play area, so I was able to bring my little girl, and there was more than enough stuff for her to do while I was getting my hair done. Of course, I loved that fact that I was able to watch her the whole time.

I ended up making another appointment for color, as I found out that she was a color EDUCATOR, so I knew she knew her stuff. Once again, she did not let me down. She was awesome!

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Maureen and her salon, Shears2U for anyone who is looking for another stylist, whether you're looking for a different "do" or just someone who really knows hair. You will NOT be disappointed!
