Ratings_icons Magnificent ambience and Fantastic curry

I must admit, this was my first time trying real Indian cuisine. Feeling adventurous, and highly recommended by my co workers I indulged in a fun and pleasurable exploration of taste at Royal India an Exquisite Indian cuisine and cocktails in the Gaslamp area of San Diego located at 329 Market street, a place that definitely lived up to its name Royal. The Curry was not Americanized but authentic which is unique which makes the taste and quality really good. Large restaurant was about half full when we arrived there on thursday night. We parked on 2nd avenue parking lot which is just two blocks and walking distance from Royal India and paid $5 parking fee. We were greeted and seated by hostess and immediately server filled up our glass of water. Server was attentive and came to us in couple of minutes and we asked her about her favorite food and she told us that she eat Chicken tikka masala at Royal India every time she work. She said grills take bit longer because they are roasted in the clay oven fresh and not pre cooked meats just reheated. Since restaurants are all about food we did not mind if it took longer for our food because we wanted fresh and the best.
The last time I had curry was with disastrous results. I had decided to swear off it. Many years later, I decided to cast fate to the wind and tried the most popular item at Royal India Chicken Tikka Masala with Garlic Nan and my friend ordered Lamb kabab and that was fantastic and well worth it for us to try the most delicious Indian food, as they are prepared with much care and time at Royal India as per the server . The curry was fresh and not too overwhelming in flavor, the chicken was tender Im glad I decided to open my taste buds again to this wondrous treat as Im sure many curry lovers (or newcomers) would attest! Royal India gave friendly service, beautiful palace like atmosphere yet the prices are modest.
Rice pudding that leaves a great, satisfying sensation after a hearty, spicy meal. Keep an open mind and palate, and be ready for an evening of great, exotic food at Royal India! We will be back.

Ratings_icons No jokes! Royal India's food, gosh it taste really good. but its not only about food the atmosphere is great too.

adianakehret

No jokes! Royal India restaurant is the best around here when it comes to indian cuisine I know because I have eaten in all of them. If you talk only about food, gosh it taste really good. but too bad this isn't only about food the atmosphere is great, it is large restaurant with three halls so you don't find yourself in the middle of the noise. the decoration are just gorgeous, the price is good also, and most of all the service is really great. the waiter will be always nice, at your service and ready to give you some advice. To make it short a good place to go with your friends, or girlfriend if you want to enjoy the taste of THE INDIAN FOOD!

Pros: We love it, Three cheers for Royal India hip hip hurrey ... .... .... ..... .... .....!

Cons: Not at Royal so far

I am delighted to have found Royal India during our show in San Diego! The food is exquisite, the staff is very affable, and the ambience is perfect for romance. It's not over crowded and there is a comfortable amount of lighting. I was very pleased with this restaurant. Being health conscious I ordered Chicken Garlic Kabab and my business associate Ron ordered Lamb Kabab. It was the best Indian food we have ever had. The Flavor and the freshness and quality of meat say it all. I would recommend Royal India to anybody who appreciates good food and great service.

Pros: Best Indian food ever

Cons: What Cons?

Ratings_icons Visiting San Diego from New York we Step into Royal India and explored the fine cuisine of India with Gracious service.

Visiting San Diego from New York we Step into Royal India and explored the fine cuisine of India. The pleasantly designed, gracious Indian decor is a perfect accompaniment to the fine cuisine. Gracious service and elegance in decor made feel special, we admired the large portraits, waterfall, wooden bar , custom arches and unique stone work. fresh, fragrant foods tempt the senses. The knowledgeable server asked which curries we wanted mild, medium or spicy because all entrees are made-to-order. We ordered Chicken Garlic kabab and Butter chicken curry with Nan bread and it was an excellent value. It was a perfect meal for two at Royal India in Gaslamp.

Pros: Even Indian restaurants in New York are not as good as Royal India. Gracious service and elegance in decor made feel special

Ratings_icons "Royal India A Great looking restaurant with decicious food and courteous service"

We went to Royal India in a group of 17 for womens night out. Upon entering we all looked at each other and it was WOW a very classy upscale large restaurant and we prefered to be seated on a large booth. Very comfortable seating and tables looked beautiful with fresh flowers in the middle of every table with a beautiful candle on everytable. Royal India has large variety of Vegetarian, seafood, Chicken and Lamb curries and kababs and really good drinks that compliment Indian food. We ordered different items so we all could share. The items we ordered were Chicken lettuce wrap and Veggi samosas for appetizers and Indian Mojitos and Mango Lassi as drinks and the appetizers were mind blowing and drinks perfect. for main course we ordered 2 dishes each of Bengan Bharta an eggplant dish, Lobster korma, Lamb Rogan josh, Chicken Garlic Kabab, Tandoori Shrimps, lamb biryani a rice speciality with bread basket the real opinion coming out of all of us is fantastic. The taste in each dish was very authentic and we just cannot pick any one item. It was all awesome. We have had Indian food before but what a presentation and service and FANTASTIC food. I think there is not match to Royal India. We had a great evening. Royal India is on top of the list for Indian food for our parties now.

Pros: Mind blowing , fantastic, excellent

Cons: aint any

Ratings_icons A memorable evening at Royal India in the Gaslamp

If you like good Indian food and are with a great company then take my personal advise to go to Royal India in the Gaslamp on 4th and market. My personal experience at Royal India was superb and unforgettable. I met Sony during her visit from UK to San Diego who is here for an internship in Nephrology in UCSD. During our Lunch on in UCSD lunch was delivered by Royal India and Sony loved the food so I wanted to surprise her by taking her to Royal India's fine dinning. Upon arriving we valet our parking right in front of the restaurant and walked inside. We were amazed at the decor. On the left side there is large waterfall with Indian Brass large statues sitting inside beautiful stone work and then there is a large wall that has arch shape and very beautiful stone work done on it we landed in the lounge room that has a beautiful hand carved wooden bar and right side of the restaurant has very unique and beautiful stonework wall. On the whole it is very elegantly designed restaurant which you do not get to see often. We ordered Mango Soup and chicken lettuce wrap as starters and for main course we had Karahi Chicken and Lamb kabab with Garlic nan and basmati rice came with it. Mango soup was really delicious with cumin and corriander taste in it and Lettuce wrap was made with chicken tikka kabab sliced and sauted with curry and served on top of lettuce leaves. Our main course Karahi chicken was flavourful tender chicken cooked with bell peppers and sliced onions and tomatoes and Lamb Kabab marinated in yogurt and spices just melts in your mouth it was awsome and Garlic Nan bread was just lip smacking. On the whole it was the greatest Indian meal we have had. Sony said the food was even better then Indian food in UK and for ambience Royal India is the best Indian restaurant she has ever been to. We look forward to going back to Royal Indian again.

Pros: Beautiful ambience, peaceful atmosphere and lot of artistic collections to look around while you are dinning.

Cons: I can not go to Royal India every day. But I wish I could.

The best part about Royal India is that t there is so much to the ambience that you can easily admire the decor and large Royal Portraits, stone work and handcarved bar and arches with italian stone, servers in beautiful outfit that it was perfect place to celebrate in one of the three banquet halls, go for a date in an elegant Indian restaurant or go to enjoy good Indian food in San Diego.
I order Bengan Bharta an eggplant roasted in clay oven and cooked in pulp made with garlic ginger and spices, my dad ordered Chicken chilli ginger masala which was made with fresh chillies, sliced ginger and spices, my husband love mild and seafood he ordered mango pineapple lobster, my mom ordered Lamb Korma which is lamb cooked in mild coconut curry. My brother ordered Chicken Garlic Kabab which is Chicken marinated in yogurt and fresh garlic and spices and roasted in clay oven with garlic nan and nan.
When the food arrived it looked fresh like from the garden and the flavor and taste so authentic and good as in moms kitchen. The curries looked fantastic and taste very delicious and kabab was served on a sizzling sizzler on vegetable bed and looked beautiful and healthy. The nans were really fresh and soft that you can eat the nans bread itself as your meal. We all agree with the server that it was fresh and it was worth a wait. We wanted good food and we got the best Of Indian food at Royal India.
We all loved our food in Royal India and my dad who is real critic when it come to Indian Food said "I thought my wife cooks the best Indian food in the world, Royal India's food is as good as my wifes, I can eat it everyday"
Since it was my dads birthday and we had made reservation anf mentioned it was for my dads birthday the dessert was served on the house by Royal India. We loved the beautifully designed decor which added to am elegant ambience, and professional service made my dads birthday perfect and we will be back.

Ratings_icons Royal India a quite handsome restaurant with an eye-catching decor

dnelson329

I found a quite handsome restaurant called Royal India located on Market street in down town San Diego, and in addition to an eye-catching decor that includes a gently flowing water sculpture and other attractions, the Indian food served at Royal India takes diners on a nice tour of the Indian Kitchen. So I decided to take my wife on our anniversary to Royal India.
Choice of appetizer which include Paneer Pakora, Onion Bhaji and Chicken lettuce wrap set the mood with Indian Mojito and Mango Martini which are made fresh to order and are superb.
Freshly baked breads are simply fluffy- textured Nan which are absolutly essential to an Indian meal, are offered at Royal India with profusion, along with numerous house curry specialties, familiar curry preparations and assorted meats and seafood cooked in a mesquite charcoal-heated tandoor.
Cooking Chicken Tikka Masala can be a tricky process and Royal India's Executive chefs and owners Sandeep Kambo (Sam) and Jagdeep Kambo (Jag) make it the best with Chicken marinated in Yogurt and spices then cooked with tomato and curry with touch of cream and the seasoning which Kambo Brothers mix and blend themselves is key to it and that flavour is the one that brought me back, the same curry can be cooked with Paneer (Homemade farmers cheese mixed with spices) the curry at Royal India can be mild or volcanic according to taste just let your server know your choice.
Other pleasures that issue from the oven include the spicy lemon-chili kabab which also is flavoured with pungent fresh ginger and a garlic kabab with fresh cilantro and other herbs. Lamb Kabab is so tender that it melts in your mouth.
We ended our meal with Pistacho Ice cream and my wife had Mango Mousse. What a lovely treat. Thank you Royal India.

Ratings_icons Bad service, Great Food

nicholeelisabeth

We had a 7:30PM reservation and were promptly seated by a nice hostess. That was the end of the good service.

We didn't get our first drink (bud lights) until about 8PM. When it came to getting a refill on the drinks we had to go to the bar ourselves, where the bartender was helpful, but not appologetic. Our server was nice, but did NOT attend to the table, we didn't have the kind of fine dining experiance we were expecting for $25 a plate. I noticed the tables around us were just as frusterated as we were.

The food itself was great. I loved my dish , but very anti-climatic when it came an hour and a half after we were seated. By this time we were starving and a cadboard box would have tasted nice.

Our entire meal ended at about 9:45. The restaurant was busy with the normal convention crowds that you find in the gaslamp on a weeknight. I would not recommend this restaurant to my friends. Instead, I'd say they can get just as good food down the street at Monsoon, and much better service there as well.

Pros: Good food

Cons: Bad service
