The worst part about these guys is that they come off so well on first impression. Rick is a likable guy who seems like he has his act together, but don't be fooled. We hired them to remodel a bathroom and construct a dormer on our roof. The bathroom came out fine, not great, but passable. Only problem was that we told them we needed it done by July 1 and it wasn't finnished until mid-September. Also, the only way to get these guys to pay attention to detail is to constantly nag and harass. Rick actually came over to fix some of the tile grout they put in and cracked, and then left without completing the job! Every issue that seemed like a no brainer had to be explicitly laid out over and over. To top it off, one Friday I came home from work only to find they had left my backdoor wide open and left a turd in my toilet!! I was disgusted. As for the dormer, Rick assured me (in August) he had submitted all the necessary permitting papers and kept me going for months by saying the permitting board was just slow. Eventually I wised up (in December) and called the board--no papers had been filed and we will now have to start the process over with a new contractor. I have been calling Rick for weeks trying to get our deposit back without any response. We are now commencing litigation to get our money back. Don't trust these guys or you are inviting headaches.

Business Response:

No Over Bill 2 months after finishing we were contacted by customer claiming he over paid us. ( not over billed) He is an accountant. We met and compared ledgers. He had a number of checks that did not match up with my records. I asked to see cancelled checks. Still have not. At this meeting we discussed another project, finishing attick space into 2 bed rooms and bath room. I agreed that if he had overpaid, we would credit to future work. He agreed. Still no canceled checks. After job began, we realized the home owner had not secured the permits and that he was doing wiring himself. I decided to not proceed, fearing problems with the Town such as Assessors office, Building and wiring, conservation and health seeing that his septic system was designed for 3 bed rooms he was now adding 2 more, could be a violation of Title 5. If I did such a poor job why hire me for more work. My last comunication with him was that when all issues were sorted out, I would be happy to work with him and finish the project. Also, not only did we clean up, we moved his furnitue in to the addition for him. Russell Design &Construction is not in bankruptcy and never has been.

We had fiber cement siding done for us by Russell Construction last spring, along with some construction. While Rick and his crew did the construction part well, and he was patient when we caused delay, at the end Rick did not keep his promises.

The day we paid in full (our mistake) Rick said he'd complete a punch list (of about 10 items) which we had made that day with him. He returned to install an area of missing sheathing (!) and returned to fix a door they had installed which pulled out from the frame, but little else.

The undone punchlist included important items: example - the caulking on the siding was incomplete, cracking in places, and nails were uncaulked and overdriven in the Hardi board. (Few nails should show at all with this type of siding, and caulking is key.)There are two bowed boards. We don't recommend Russell Construction for fiber cement siding.

Another example: the raking and end point of the roof on the side of our sunroom was never finished. Our brother in law did it in 90 minutes. We are fixing all the other problems at our expense. Rick hasn't returned our emails or calls for over a month.

The main tip: These guys are very pleasant but Do NOT make a final payment until ALL the work is done and look it over carefully.

Business Response:

Punch List We did come back and complete punch list, left list with checked off items as we finished them. job was done with many delays on custmoers part and we were in rainy part of spring causing even more delays. we raked to best of ability, the house was bought in foreclosure and the yard was completley over grown.. Caulking was done twice. This was a primed product and not a finished product we installed. Final caulking or "prep" would be done by painting contractor. We paint and seal cut edges with caulk to protect Hardy Plank only. These are very nice people, and I am sorry that this ended up this way, but I think being their first home expectations were un reasonable.

I'm suspicious of the first review posted here. Is the author, "Rick R", Rick Russell (owner of Russell Design & Construction)?

I had a terrible experience with this contractor. They missed their deadline by 4 weeks, shoddy work, and no attention to detail. They began a small bathroom renovation (they said it would be a four day job) a month before we were scheduled to move into our apartment, yet still managed to leave us without a toilet or shower for the first week we were there. We honestly had to pee in a bucket. When the work was finally done, it was substandard. They had to redo their floor work (subfloor & tiling) three times! And that they thought they were finished when they left a big hole in a corroded sink pipe we'd asked them to replace. They dinged up our walls, never cleaned up their tools or their trash, & generally were careless about both their work and our space.

There is not one other positive review of this company on the internet (search for yourself).

Business Response:

Shoddy? In response to the awful posting. We were hired to re do bath room and fix rotted floor around toilet. After floor was finished, Home owner found a problem with softness. Called me on a friday after noon, I was at the home the following morning 8 am to fix. As for delays, the house is over 120 years old. When fixtures and floor were stripped more work and time was required. NO EXTRA CHARGE Plumber was not able to do his end of job on scedhule.( he went on vacation) Job got delayed. 1 week. As for hole in pipe. changing pipes or plumbing not part of contract and was not discovered untill after job was finished and PAID for. NOTE: I went back cut tile floor apart and changed rotted pipe. pipe was rotted from inside and not evident. Re-tiled and grouted floor. AT NO CHARGE! I guess that is not enough for this homeowner. Job took 2 weeks with plumbers delay. Home owner not living in house at time. I am sorry this customer is not happy, I think I went above and beyond what was required in this case. 30 years I have been doing this work. I can make mistakes, but will always fix them. Feel free to contact me. Rick Russell rkrussell56@yahoo.com

I spoke to Russell Construction at the Boston Home Show, called him up about a month or so later when we were ready to go ahead with the project and he never returned the call. Times must be good after all, construction booming when work is turned away.
