I was charged $2,788.49 for the installation of 31 joist hangers (by my count 17 of the nails fixing the hangers are bent and 6 nails are missing) and a 6.5ft stud wall below a sistered Joist. The first attempt at the wall was approx. 2 inches out of plumb (8/24/07). I was charged $520.51 to have this rebuilt (subsequently discounted to $300). After the wall was re-built (8/25/07) I got Tiger Home Insp. to look at it (another $200) (9/6/07). They said "The installation was not performed in a good workman like manner - studs do not line up with top plate, over nailing and split studs that appear to have been re-used, wall is slightly out of plumb."

Other issues, a hot water pipe was damaged (fixed after 4 days), overnailing has split blocking for hangers and one stud significantly (the number of nails securing the studs to the top plate varies between 1 and 6), three of the joists which were supposed to be jacked up flush have now been secured with hangers in a non-flush position (original invoice states "#3 Jack up and repair any sags in framing"),two four inch nails go straight through a Joist into nothing on the other side (two occurences of this), 13 nails were used in an attempt to secure one joist to another (at right angles) all this did was trash the bottom four inches of the joist which the contractor attempted to cover up with some kind of resin.

I paid 50% of the contract up front. On 9/1/07 the contractor left 2 invoices at my house, one for the balance of the contract ($1,243.49) dated 8/24/07 and the other relating to the re-building of the stud wall dated 8/30/07. Just over 2 weeks later I received a letter dated 9/19/07 from an attourney stating that unless I paid the amounts "due immediately" he would "take such action as is necessary to collect the aforesaid balances".

I registered a complaint with the BBB and they closed the case as UNRESOLVED, which created an UNSATISFACTORY report on the company. In his reply to my complaint he made the following statements (amongst others)

"I lowered the price when I sent it to him because I felt badly that my helper (Greg) did not call before moving forward with something he did not know how to do correctly. I also lowered the figure because the State of CT says we can bill up to $350 without a signed contract." + "I read the inspector's report and as best I can tell he did not cover a single item that needed to be replaced due to the fact it was done wrong. He stated that the work was done in an unworkmanlike manner but did not say anywhere that the work needed to be replaced."

Click on my name for a photo to see why I am so happy about having parted with the best part of $3k.
