I loved the atmosphere in this place. It was recommended by a frined and I was very pleased with the ambience and the food.

Only been here once, but I really liked it. Friends of ours said we had to it. The food was not only good, but the presentation was wonderful. I would go back.

If I had to eat at only one restaurant in Brookline it would be Lineage. The menu changes from time to time, with different versions of their excellent scallops, roast hen, etc. The cocktails are perfectly prepared, but they are a little small. Servers are always knowledgeable and helpful. The staff provides a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere. It can get busy during dinner, so it's good to call ahead. Sitting and eating at the bar is a nice alternative on busy nights. We've been to Lineage an uncountable number of times, and it has never been anything but excellent.

Friends and I went here for the first time recently because of reviews. Not sure how long ago those were written because what we found was completely opposite. The decor was tacky, and the menu was WAY overpriced! The experience was horrible from the minute we walked in the door when we had to wait 10 minutes for a staff member to even look at us. We were then taken to a cramped table by the annoying and uncomfortably fake owner. The food wasn't bad, but some of our meals were luke warm or even cold like it had been premade or sitting out for a while.

Oh and our server smelled of body odor so bad that we wanted to leave before our food came.

Save yourself the trouble and go to the Fireplace for half the price.

You can't NOT have a good time when you go to Lineage. Just to show you how popular they are there's always a line of people waiting to eat during dinner. Their menu changes frequently and their seafood is always super-fresh. If you like seafood this is the place to be. Try the fish dishes but I recommend the lobster (since the owner's cousin supplies them with only the best catches). I also recommend the chicken, tuna tare-tare, and crab cakes. Their staff is friendly and accomodating, the place is nicely decorated and painted a nice and cheerful yellow, the food from beginning appetizer to the last spoonful of dessert is wonderful. Make sure to save room for dessert because the butterscotch pudding and their blood-orange float is the type of dessert you dream of after you leave the restaurant. Also their interesting historical ties to Brookline adds one extra layer of intruige. So what's not to like?

I brought my mother-in-law who is extra-picky about food quality, taste, and cleanliness (on top of the fact that she's a super-healthy eater) and the restaurant passed with her stamp of approval which says a lot.

Also check out their website for more info: www.lineagerestaurant(dot)com

Pros: consistently satisfying from appetizer to dessert

Cons: metered parking only

I consider myself a foodie, so am regulalry disappointed when visiting "fancy" restaurants where the food is unimaginative. Lineage definitely does not disappoint. After my first visit there two weeks ago, I haven't had the desire to try another restaurant. I find myself ordering a lot more than usual just to taste everything! Also great great service. Servers are super friendly. We tried the "tasting menu" this time; it was just correctly proportioned to leave a little room for dessert. BEST CRABCAKE EVER!

Pros: Simple and elegant setting

Cons: Great if you live on the greenline (not I)

I've eaten here twice, the atmosphere is pleasant, the staff is nice, and the rolls are delicious with kosher salt baked on the top and cooked right before they're served. But the entrees are overpriced for an unmemorable meal. I just didn't like the food that much. With a place so expensive and formal, I expect more. The bathrooms are very clean and pretty.

I travel and always stay in the area, Lineage has won me over. Great people, great space and really great food! This is a hidden gem that the everyone should experience. I can eat cheap at the bar with a few appitizers or go big, I love it. The wine list is smart and easy. Great neighborhood place that should be in every neighborhood!

Lineage is my "must go to" restaurant when I visit the Brookline area. The staff is warm, friendly and efficent. They represent the wonderful restaurant owned by Jeremy. Jeremy is the chef as well and does an incredable job with the quality of food, the variety of menu and hiring the most wonderful people who make you feel like you are "home" when there. Tammy is an exceptional example of this as the manager. I don't remember everyone's name but Andy, the bartender is a great guy, as was Josh, Joanna...etc, etc. They immediately become "family" and you want to return! This is a very special restaurant and a prime example is the way they took care of 26 people who were staying at a local hotel for a wedding on a snowy evening who called just minutes before to ask if they could come for dinner. The restaurant had fewer waitstaff as they didn't expect many people due to cancellations because of the weather. The people arrived, the orders were taken, the food prepared in a timely manner and served beautifully. The owner allowed the people to remain as they talked after dinner as many hadn't seen each other in some time. The staff remained after the normal closing hours and were still smiling when we left. Yes, that is it...you go to Lineage and you leave smiling!

Whenever we get into town, my husband and I never miss dinner and brunch at The Lineage. Besides the food being cooked to perfection, the staff is always so warm and friendly. What a great feeling we get when the manager and her staff even remember our names. It's so nice to see the same faces everytime! I recommend this kind of dining to all ages.

I have been dining at Lineage regularly since it's opening one year ago (Happy Anniversary!) and although I often recommend it my close friends and clients, I now feel as I should share it with the world- or at least the Brookline side of the world. Anyway, every time I walk in the door, it's like coming home. I usually see the same smiling faces and if not, I see new smiling faces. I always feel like the staff is truly happy to see me and genuinely happy to be there themselves. I love the menu. It totally reflects the chef's committment to "farm fresh, seasonal fish and produce" or what they call 'modern American.' I love to see certain favorites available like the Maine crab cake (which really is mostly ALL CRAB MEAT!) as well as the seasonal items like sweet Maine shrimp risotto with bloodorange sauce. No matter what I order it is always cooked to perfection. I eat so much that I always hope to skip dessert but never can - whether it's the decadent chocolate cake (aptly named) or the house favorite butterscotch pudding..I can never resist. I never regret visiting Lineage and the staff always makes me feel like family. I don't hesitate to bring anyone I know there whether it be my elderly very finicky parents (who are always accommodated with a smile) or my children (who are just as bad but always eat something that makes them happy) because I know we'll all be glad we came. Oh, and my mother especially appreciates the clean restrooms (she'd be hurt if I didn't mention that). Ok, after all this, my point is: Go there! It's great. Oh, and try the butterscotch - trust me.

Made a reservation for restaruant week. Arrived and place was pretty empty.
Table was nice, up in front. Decor is pretty cool as well. Then things started to go wrong.
Drink order error - took 15 mins to get my beer
Screwed up appetizer order, soup instead of shrimp
Screwed up steak, said rare came medium
Waitress was a bumbling mess. Apparently they have the C team working wait staff on Monday nights.

I've been to Lineage twice now. The first time was when the restaurant first opened. The second time was just a few weeks ago, and oh my, they certainly worked their 'kinks' out. I promptly greeted at the door, coat checked, and sat at the bar. Friendly and knowledgeable bartender, nice cocktail list and great wines selection. I was amazed how much different, especially the menu, was since the last time I dined there.
Home-made terrines, pates, bacon, sausage and tasso hams! Along with the typical seafood as you would expect, all reasonably priced. I ended up with the Charcuterie plate. Headcheese, country pate and winter sausage. No need to travel into Boston for things like this! Perfectly bablanced with crunchy bread, mustard and pickled veggies. Entree, haddock. perfectly cooked, juicy and crispy skin. brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes and homemade bacon. Great balance of the fresh sprouts, sweentess of the potatoes and crunchy smokey house cured bacon. Ending with the Butterscotch pudding..I give it an A. However, I wish there was a TV next to the beautiful wood-burning oven for the bar crowd.

For $130 for dinner for two, go downtown instead. The food is very mediocre; Lineage does not compete with the more upscale restaurants downtown in the same price range. Make your reservations elsewhere!

New Restaurant Needs to Iron Out Kinks- Not Recommended

For the prices they charge, I normally expect more creativity from the menu. Specifically- the lobster bisque was watery, and the pork consisted of a large layer of fat. The crab cake was delicious as was the rib eye. Very inconsistent! The service was adequate but not friendly. The decor was bland. I would give them another chance six months later since they are a new restaurant, but not until then.

We dined at Lineage and had an outstanding meal. We tried the cod cheeks -interesting use of the wood fire stove. Delicious scallops and steak. Excellent service. Nice selection of wines. The Butterscotch Pudding was suggested for dessert and it was out of this world.

First time I went to Lineage it was great. They had first opened and it was a good all around experience.

Second time was a couple of weeks ago. A friend of mine and I went online to find restaurant hours because we wanted a late dinner. I live about 3 blocks away. By the time we got there is was a good half-hour before posted hours said the kitchen was closing. Upon walking in, the bartender informs us from across the room that "we are closing early tonight. Sorry!" with a stupid grin on her face that could only be construed as "Yes! I can't wait to get out of here!". This was a THURSDAY night. Now, why are you closing early? I own restaurant in town and can only pray the owner sees this and the proper people can be disposed of. I'm sure he doesn't want his business run this way. STAY OPEN UNTIL YOUR POSTED TIMES. Especially a THURSDAY! Especially if you want to be SUCCESSFUL.

So, my first experience was so good that I decided to give it another shot. Last night (1/24/07) a friend mine and I had a EXCELLENT dinner at the bar. Service was good. We were asked to see a dessert menu and said sure. We still had glasses of wine. The bartender then asked us if we wanted dessert and we said no. We were about to either order a bottle of wine or more drinks because I hadn't seen my friend for a while and we were planning on staying to chat. Not even an offer for more drinks, just a check thrust into our face. I didn't even ask for it. This was about 8:30. I could see a bartender trying to get out at closing time, but now, he just lost a sale for himself and the restaurant. Stupid. We got up and went to Fugakyu and had a few more rounds that COULD have been at Lineage.

Please, do yourselves a favor and train people correctly or stop hiring dumbs**ts. Its ruining your restaurant. I'm never going back and it's a shame because the food is great.

I arrived at about 5:10 on a Tuesday, with no reservation. There was one couple at a table, and another couple arrived at the same time as I. I was greeted with "Are you here for dinner?" which I thought was a bit strange. Ambiance was attempting "stark modern," but lacked lighting, color, seating design or anything else to give it the drama "stark" needs. On the other hand, I went for the food, and it was excellent... starting with a perfect vodka martini ("Lineage Martini") with a curly twist. $9.50 The half dozen oysters were $14, and were opened and served perfectly... no bits of shell, oyster liquor was retained in the shells, chilled exactly right, and fresh, plump and sweet. I could have made a meal of appetizers alone... so many with descriptions that made them very appealing. I settled on the "white" pizza. Delicate crust with just the right amount of toppings. I ordered salmon, and Jason (knowledgeable and attentive server) asked how I wanted it cooked. I asked that it be cooked to chef's preference. It arrived hot, and slightly crusty on the exterior and the interior was just on the cooked side of rare... perfect, again. It had a wonderful smokey aroma, lightly salted and succulent. (I don't remember the accompanying vegetables, but my plate was absolutely clean when I finished.) For dessert, I had pear upside down cake... good, but not rave-worthy... and rooibus tea. By 6:15, I was ready to go, and the place was packed, with people waiting near the door. It looked like it was getting hectic. Glad I went early.

My husband and I went there for a romantic dinner, and were not disappointed! We were seated almost immediately (with a reservation) and got great service all night. The appetizers were divine. We tried the lobster and sausage plate (sounds strange, but this is no ordinary sausage. I *loved* it.) and the oyster plate (best I've ever had). My scallop entree was quite good, maybe a little too hearty for the warm night we visited. The highlight of the night, though was the ending - the butterscotch pudding and the pumpkin cheese cake. I know they're celebrated for the pudding, but the cheesecake was what won my heart.

My friends and I are frequent diners at Lineage and our visits to this restaurant are never less than fabulous so I decided to show them some support. Their food is absolutely amazing and the service is impeccable, everytime! The food and wine is upscale and delicious, but with unexpectedly low prices. Also, the servers are different than the servers at most restaurants because they are not snobby, but instead are friendly and informative. Futhermore, their menu changes daily so we always have variety. Last night I had the Bay Scallops from Nantucket for an appetizer and the New York Steak for my entree and both were amazing as always. Definitely try the butterscotch pudding!!!!

The night started off poorly when we were not seated for over 40 minutes after our reservation, and the hostess seemed to take exception to our inquiries regarding when we would be seated. The bread looked fantastic, but our waiter forgot to bring us any until we requested it well after our appetizers had reached the table. Although we were seated by 8:30, they were already out of several menu items. Three orders of fish (halibut, swordfish, and scallops) were all overcooked and the pumpkin risotto might have been Kraft Easy Mac and Cheese. A very expensive mistake. Do yourself a favor and go to Red Lobster.

My fiance and I went to Lineage after reading some rave reviews in various Boston publications and the food lived up to my expectations! I had an excellent corn soup with really tasty "beignets"; a nice juxtaposition of sweet (corn) and salty (beignets) food. The roasted chicken was fantastic, both tender and flavorful. Contrary to some of the reviews on Citysearch, the service that night was good. Our waitress was very friendly and everything arrived according to what we ordered. The only downside was that the dining room was extremely warm, even though it was a chilly night outside. They had the doors open, but did not seem to have central air. Also, the inside dining room is very sparsely decorated, but for the prices on the menu, the food was excellent!

The only downside was that the dining room was extremely warm, even though it was a chilly night outside. They had the doors open, but did not seem to have central air. Also, the inside dining room is very sparsely decorated, but for the prices on the menu, the food was excellent!

My husband and I had dinner at Lineage last night. We had made reservations and were seated promptly. We both ordered appetizers which we really enjoyed but both of our entrees were terrible. I ordered the Cod, it had no taste, and neither did the risotto or vegetables that accompanied it. My husbands chicken was not cooked all the way through and was also flavorless.
The waitress apologized and a manager came by to offer us a desert on the house. With so many wonderful restaurants in Brookline we will definitely not return to Lineage.

Pros: Great location

Cons: Food

The food was very good to excellent in a nice-looking if austere restaurant. But the service was so bad that we may not go back. The problems:

1. We were practically shooed out of our seats at the bar so they could seat diners there. And there was no offer to transfer our tab from the bar to the table.

2. We were served a glass, and then a whole bottle, of champagne, that was warm. No apologies for the glass, although it was replaced, and then we were assured that the bottle had been "in the chiller all day." If that was true, the chiller is not working.

3. We were not served bread until after the appetizers had arrived.

4. Staff was aloof and generally unfriendly. A little smile goes a long way.

5. Friends of ours who happened to be there at the same time were not seated within 40 minutes of their reservation, and left the restauarant. The staff did not apologize, offer drinks or hors d'oeuvres, or do any of the things that a good service restaurant should do when it has such a situation (with a party of six no less).

That being said, the pizza appetizer was excellent.

Pros: the food

Cons: the service; cramped table for four

Lineage amazingly had a table for two during a busy Thursday evening at peak hours and offered an inspired menu of both incredibly tasty appetizers (try the warm figs with blue cheese which would better be served as a dessert choice!) and the best tuna tartare ever. However as I was enjoying the priciest entree on the menu ( three tender sea scallops on mushroom risotto at $27), I noticed that at the two ajoining tables where patrons had ordered the very same dish, they had four scallops on their plates. With such a pricey entree, order sizes should be consistent since I felt cheated though felt ridiculous mentioning this to the wait person after the fact. If I ever order scallops or shrimp here ever again, I will certainly ask "how many." Desserts were yummy and worth the price and calories. Avoid on the weekends however when reservations run late.

Pros: inspired menu, delicious preparation, good wine list

Cons: inconsistent serving sizes, crowded, uninspired room

I dined there last night. The food and service were excellent. The menu changes daily -- seafood items are a highlight. I had the scallops. My friend had steak. We shared the butterscotch pudding - which was devine. Can't wait to try it out for brunch. It was a busy night and there were no tables available so we happily ate at the bar. Next time we'll make reservation.

The coffee was excellent, the food was in just the right portion sizes to be filling and the service was prompt but unobtrusive. I had the Lineage burger, which was cooked to perfection with a side of french fries that had a distinctive smoky salty flavor. I tasted my partner's salmon hash with poached eggs and found it equally good.

Pros: Prompt service, perfect portion sizes, beautifully prepared dishes

Cons: A bit warm seated by the windows on a sunny day

.

No ambience, poor seating (could not get into my seat without asking someone to get out of their seat) uninspired food (my pea soup was a rough pea puree, my pork chop was thin & dry, although I requested medium, the dessert was excellent), at average pricing. Service was fine. Poor wine selection. My wife enjoyed her salad, but felt her crab was different, but not above average. None in our party of six felt they would return.

First time at lineage;clean lines of the restaurant reflect the food to come. Went at the begining of May and happily the menu featured the fresh ingradients you are looking for after the comfort food of winter. Somewhat pricey.

My first experience at Lineage resteraunt definitly wont be my last. It was great food, with a menu that offers something for everyone. The duck canaloni appetizer was mouth watering and the salmon with orzo, perfectly pan seared and fresh. Dessert was amazing as well. The vanilla frap and butterscotch pudding are must orders! I look forward to spreading the word about this new resteraunt.
