Arguably one the best restaurants in the city. Beautifully prepared plates of food. Impeccable and attentive service. Delicately balanced flavors that will satisfy both sophisticated palates and novices. Unparalleled selection of fantastic wines.I will definitely come back again.

5 stars to the ambiance. This place really is a surprise after you pass the entry. This is a definite romantic little spot.

3.5 stars for the food. It had good presentation and tasted alright, but was somewhat over priced for the quality. I've definitely tasted better for the same price. Also, our appetizer and main course were barely luke warm.

I've been to this place a few times and each time was out of necessity. Too hungry, rain, don't feel like looking around, etc.

And each and every time, the consistent factor has been hateful staff. Where do they find these people?

Food is sub-par and forgetable.

Pere Pinard is one of those restaurants that you're excited to go to no matter what the weather. If it's rainy, then the place feels cozy and comforting. If it's sunny, then the open-air garden is a perfect accompaniment to the tasty food. The one HUGE eyesore though - and it appears as if this is a common complaint now - is that the service is really quite AWFUL. Although I love the food, I now find myself hesitating to make a reservation because I don't want to put up with the rudeness. As a 4-year veteran hostess, I understand that it's tough to work in the service business, and I'm not expecting smiles and rainbows - I just want adequate, cordial, service. Not service like the time I ordered a glass of champagne and it came in a dirty glass. I asked for a new glass, and the waitress glared at me and said, "really? it's not that noticeable."

Based on the comments from another reviewer I decided to make a reservation. I arrived with time to spare, and much like the gentleman who commented on 1/15, was dressed well. There were many open tables, but I was offered a choice of sitting at the corner of the bar, near the door; or sitting in a cramped corner (also by the door) between two couples who had already used what would have been my seat for their coats and shopping bags. I asked if there was any way of sitting in the dining room or at one of the 2 tops in the bar section, but I was brusquely told they were spoken for. So, I chose the bar. I hadn't even sat down before the bartender was demanding my drink order. I told him I'd need a few moments and he shot me a look as if I had said something rude about his mother. After that I knew it was time to go. Very disappointing as the menu, while typical, had still piqued my interest. Now, I wish I could give them a half star instead of a full star.

The morale of the story... If you are dining solo be prepared to be demoted to the bar at Le Pere Pinard regardless of whether you have a reservation; and regardless of how many open 2 tops you see. My suggestion... Go somewhere where you'll be treated with respect instead!

I have been coming to this restaurant for YEARS, but a new maitre'd seems to have taken over and is beyond rude. We arrived at 7:45 on Sat night looking for a table for two and were told that there was absolutely no way that we could be accomodated at all that night. Last I checked, this restaurant did not take reservations at all, and there were various empty tables throughout the restaurant. We certainly would not have been turned away because of the way we were dressed (stylish gay couple - if I do say so myself)...so I don't know what it was. The prior host was always super friendly and accomodating...

Le Pere Pinard has consistently been one of my favorite spots to bring friends/visitors. I've had dinner there many times and never had a bad experience. French menu is eclectic - enough of a continental assortment to please various tastes - and the food is delicious (especially the whole fish, which shows up occasionally on the specials menu, and the mussels). I always appreciate the well-chosen wine list, as well. Rustic atmosphere is cozy - very warm in winter (almost too hot in summer) and a bit smoky from the kitchen, which has never bothered me. Service has been great each time I've been, even despite the presence of large parties/big tables. I highly recommend for a fun lower east experience!

The setting is cool but the food was bad. My girlfriend and I had dinner at Le Pere Pinard a few weeks ago and both of our entrees were not good. She could not stomach to finish her steak and the duck confit was barely edible. If you want a cool place to chill for a drink on the LES, this is a good place. Just don't order dinner :-)

Snippy comments - unacceptable. $15.99 Pre-Theatre Menu in exchange of service - a foodish disaster! This is perfectly disappointing considering that we (meaning our group of 25) all came in good spirits for a birthday celebration. Mind you - nobody was there yet except for another group of 4. How could it be that there is not enough plates not unless the staff does not want to wash additional dishes?! What a bummer since a number of us has eaten there before and had no trouble with the place. Good cheap food is great but at the end enjoying the ambiance and service is what makes dining out worthwhile.

A FRENCH restaurant with no bread plates - give me a break!

i love the cozy romantic atmosphere, maybe because my date was a sweet romantic Frenchman. Tthe host greeted us in French and promptly showed us to a secluded corner table where the candles where lit. The wait staff was attentive. For appetizers the blue cheese and goat cheese were very flavorful. I had the hangar steak, it was very tasty and cooked the way I asked. My date sat beside me with the other table and the waiter was sensitive enough to put his plate in front of him instead of across from me so we could sit beside each other, actually we used two tables instead of one! We had to hunt down the waitress later for the water and bill because it became busy later and it was hard to catch her eye because there were too many people standing in blocking the view, but she was very attentive during the rest of the evening. Overall, I had a wonderful experience, the atmosphere was definitely romantic, the food was excellent, I would come back again (maybe on an anniversary). I'm regretful at the bad reviews because I had an amazing experience, it was probably the company I kept that contributed to this experience too (meaning my incredibly romantic swashbuckling date) I would highly recommend it for dates or group outings. Although my date said the decor wasn't typical of a French Bistro, I still liked it, he said the food was excellent so it must have been good coming from a Frenchman. I give it five stars.

I was hungry and wanted somewhere to go where I could eat, relax, sip wine and read a book. I was staying in the neighborhood and I actually found this place on citysearch. When I got there the place was empty except for a couple drinking wine at the bar. I was seated promptly and ordered from the prix fixe menu. Steamed mussels were brough out with a nice hunk of French bread. They were out of the white wine I asked for but the waitress asked the bartender for a reasonable facsimilie and it was just fine. For my entree I had the hanger steak and it was cooked medium rare, the way I like it and I had no complaints. I was the only dining customer as it was early, roughly 5pm and sat in the window with a nice breeze coming in. When the check came I handed her my credit card and was told they only accept American Express. The waitress was very kind and let me have her hold my ID while I walked down the street to where I was staying to get some cash, and when I came back all was well. I had a good experience there, but I always tend to when I dine alone in off-peak hours. Try it then.

Horrible is the word. We went for a birthday party, had to breathe the SMOKE that their non existing airing system cannot handle (seriously, people at the table were rubbing eyes and stuff)
having been seated right in front of the open kitchen, and across from the only fan in the room that airs the smoke right back at you! Get this, they have to keep the garden door open since it's their only source of ventilation, but won't let you out there when you pass out from the smoke and need the oxygen, since they've been ticketed for God knows what. The food is no-no, (they could only bring out 70% of the food ordered in 3hrs) and God knows what type of rodents live in that kitchen next to your fish.

The manager, and the waitresses are rude by no measure. But I guess if there's anything worse than being a customer there, it's to be a waitress... Don't go, stay away, this place should be closed down by sanitization department. You will never have such a bad experience in anywhere in the world.

I made a reservation for a big dinner party on Saturday night for 10PM. I called three times that weekend to confirm and they said "Of course you are confirmed. When we arrived there was a party already sitting there. At 10:45PM I ask the arrogant host politely when we would be seated and he replied.."Do you have somewhere better to be." No apologies were given just complete attitude. I've lived in the East Village for 8 years and never received this sort of treatment. If you want good French food without the arrogance try Casimir on B and 6th. I regret not going there.

I went to this place last night at athe urging of a friend. Although a cute atmosphere, that's about all it had to offer. We got our entrees 50 minutes after ordering. They didn't clear our appetizer plates until before the entrees came (so we sat there w/dirty empty plates before us for like 1/2 hour). I asked for my steak to be medium well, saying specifically that I wanted it pink inside. The thing was mooing. I didn't bother sending it back because it had taken so long just to get the thing in the first place. So, I spent $20 on a dish I barely ate. The service was HORRIBLE. My friends got their drinks about 15 minutes after ordering. Two of them got the drinks AFTER already finishing the entree. When we asked for the drinks, our waiter said "Our bartender is busy." No apology, just an excuse. Anyway, when we left, we noticed one of the waitresses at the bar drinking wine. And she was definitely still on her shift. If you want subpar French food (there are WAY better French restaurants in NYC), poor service and a bad attitude, by all means, eat here. Otherwise, save your money.

I was so sad to read the bad reviews this place got! I've been several times and am totally smitten. The waiters are sweet, the food is tasty and the bill is never too large. It is sometimes a little cramped, and can get a little warm, but hello, it's NYC! They also have a back garden open in the summer - cute and French with outdoor seating - what more could you ask for?

Le Pere Pinard has a $15 pre-theater menu that is outstanding. Fresh, authentic, french cuisine in substantial portions. Three courses - choices include excellent mussels, puff pastry goat cheese and salad with a delicious dressing, and a hanger steak au poivre that is out of this world. Their wines by the glass are a great accompaniment and you can eat like a king with wine for under $30. Not a small feat for good french food in the area. It's easy to get a table for a large group and you don't get hustled out. Get there before 7pm.

Good French restaurant in an area devoid of decent restaurants unless you're into eating 4 pound pastrami sandwiches at Katz' Deli, or Mexican food which is supplied by capable restaurants. Nice ambiance, nice little bar, good bartender, Francois, and good service. Bill a little high, but worth it. Would definitely visit again. Recommended.

For people who like yummy food and big portions. They just got a new chef and the food is EXCELLENT. I keep coming back here for dinner and tried brunch the other week- really tasty and original. For people who like Bloody Marys this is a must! On the weekend its a great party place but I like to come here during the week nights. A nice neighborhood crowd, chilled out vibe. Great place for either appetizers and drinks at the bar, a romantic dinner or late night partying. Not many places like this left in the neighborhood. Two thumbs up.

First went here to enjoy their garden terrace. The food was amazing, and the service was prompt and helpful, but not over-bearing or rushed. The Steak Tartare is a great bet, they fix it for you at the table. Admittedly some nights inside the restaurant were rather warm, but the open kitchen is part of the charm. Great wine selection, Gigondas is worth the price, and the house champagne is a great value. It may be a bit packed on weekends, but the vibe is good and it is the best French food you will find in the area. Have recommended the place to friends, always gets good response.

Had a reservation for 3 friends on Sat. night. We were seated promptly by friendly host and place was packed. It was also at least 100 degrees in the restaurant (despite fact that it was 30 degrees outside) and even stripped down to tank tops, everyone was perspiring. Ridiculously bad ventilation. Our waitress was probably the rudest server I have had in 5 years in NYC. Goat cheese salad was the worst I've had and my salmon was so tasteless and dry that I didn't finish half of it. My friend's trout was equally poorly prepared. Our friend's steak was decent. With so many great places in the neighborhood we will definitely not be back. Too bad, b/c this place has potential if it wasn't for the poor service and food.

This restaurant used to be good not long ago. I got engaged back in December and called them to make a last minute reservation. It became my worst nightmare. Of course, all the members of my group came as they could, since it was not organized. Every time each of my friends came, the host will give them a hard time. Plus he came to inform me that I needed to leave without finishing the wine. We did consume a lot. At least the host should have been polite. None of that. There are other places with better manners.

The service at this restaurant is HORRIBLE. The restaurant business is a service industry and when a customer requests a drink, you make it. When I requested a drink, the bartender replied, "make it simple, no college drinks." Well you know what, you're a bartender and you're job is to make me a drink whatever it may be. I was extremely offended and feel that this was completely unacceptable. I would not recommend this place to anyone, unless you feel like spending money to be treated poorly.

I went here for a birthday dinner with my family & we loved it despite that this is not a "family restaurant." The food is excellent - interesting crowd of people. The bar was crowded but not obnoxiously loud. Seating is cramped and service could be better but is by no means a reason to not go. Kitchen is in the dining area so it gets very hot! The chocolate mini cake is excellent and so is their creme brulee, pates, shepherd's pie and multiple seafood entrees. As far as prices: 5 people (2 teenage boys included ) ate 5, appetizers, 5 entrees, 4 desserts, 1 bottle of wine, 4 beers and 5 coffees all for a little over $200 not including tip.

Oh my God, it was so crowded when I went there last Friday... Definitely the place to be, mixed with all different kind of people. If you want to start some international friendship, you should go there.
The early night looks more like a traditional restaurant, I am addicted to their basil mussels and their chocolate dessert which I forgot the name. Like a puffed pastry overfilled with dark liquid chocolate.

I never ate there but I went there a few times on late saturday nights for some beers. The guy at the door is very friendly, the bartender is pretty cool too, and some of the waitresses are really cute. They have DJ's mixing some worldly house on saturday nights. The atmosphere is pretty laid back and very french. I heard from people I know that the food isn't all that, but if you go there to have a few drinks , you'll most likely have a good time unless if you're a dumb anti-french american !

Being a French bistro, this place does not have the best service, but I wouldn't call it rude. The food is really good. Try the goat cheese puffs and that chocolaty, fudgy dessert. Hmmm. The wine list is good too, in addition to some Belgian beers. The atmosphere is cozy. You can come with a date, or celebrate your birthday with 6 friends. Later in the evening, especially on weekends, this place turns into a crowded bar scene with a lot of Europeans and other foreigners. The music is good, and it's fun.

Went on a friday night 9:30, got a table for three right away (like in 2 minutes we were seated). Waiter had corny french accent but he served us fine, relatively prompt, kept our beer glasses full. Had the muscles (solid), garden salad (greens tasted very fresh, priced right at $5 bucks) to start. Had the monkfosh special (which the waiter said was "superb" ~ i was slightly underwhelmed), with some lame mashed potatoes. My boys had the the flank steak and angus steak, which i tried and thought were also average. They play funky music which i like. Beers are like 8 oz and small, at $6 a pop add up quickly. Total bill with 20% gratuity for 3 was like $150. But we each had 3-4 drinks. Not bad, but not great. If I went there and had to wait for a table I would not go back.

I arrived with a friend and was told the wait would be 10min. While waiting we asked the bartender for at glass of red wine which he not only forgot to serve but when we asked him again 10min later he poured us white wine. In addition he decided himself to keep the $2 change as a tip (how rude!!). We finally got seated 40min later. During dinner we were not able to get any service from the waiter (ie water refill, more bread, coffee) and had to get up and find the waiter ourselves to get the check. I have never written a review before however I feel future customers deserve to be warned of the total lack of service in this place.

Before 7pm, there is this great deal where you get a three course meal for $13.99. I had the most amazing mussels for an app, then a steak for the entree. Very quaint and funky, with fantastic food.

Good french on the LES. Despite other reviews, wait service was excellent, even though they were busy. The Angus steak, the muscles (a tiny bit sandy), the potato leak soup, and the bread were all fabulous. Tarte tatin was mediocre, but mostly becuase they poured to much liquor on it before flambe.

Great place, with its wooden tables, very good wine list and reasonably priced, good food (there is even a vegetarian option). The only drawback is that you can really smell the kitchen, especially when the chef is frying food. Good place to meet friends and for dates too.

just highly unorganized and screwed up. food is ok--french & heavy--nothing special. but the service and management is obviously not in tune to their customer's needs. they need to pop their filled up heads a bit and realize that they are JUST WAITERS and there is no need to treat customers poorly.

I came for dinner with a group of 10 friends and was extremely happy with the overall experience. The food & wine were fantastic and it was agreed that the dessert alone was worth a trip back. We visited on a Friday night, so it was pretty crowded and although we'd made reservations we still needed to wait about 1/2 an hour before our party was seated. If you can score a table in the back room, you'll be subject to a little less noise and have more space. The tables in the bar area are tiny and VERY close together.

This was the absolute worst service I experienced in the city. We felt totally rushed and hurried through our meal. The waiter was miffed when we decided to order dessert (and I must say we were eating the courses as they arrived, no lingering). The second they brought the bill they told us we could finish our conversation at the bar because they needed the table. Plenty of other GOOD French restaurants in city...don't waste your money here.

One of the best meals that I have ever had in New York. The food was excellent! We ordered the specials off of the chalk board-clamari, ginger soup and tuna steak. Great atmosphere and vibe. The kitchen staff and food runners work very hard. The wait staff left something to be desired, you had to track them down a bit. The food made up for it and overall it was a great experience.

RUDE RUDE RUDE! The owner of this restaurant needs to learn how to treat his patrons. The service and attitude were TERRIBLE! We paid a lot of money to this restaurant to celebrate our friend's birthday and we were thoroughly disrespected and mistreated. AVOID this restaurant.

I would rather starve than give these jerks another nickel of my money, and I can't encourage you strongly enough to AVOID this restaurant. The food is subpar, the restaurant is uncomfortable, the waitstaff is rude and smelly. But the real problem was the ownership who refused to let us have dessert, a birthday cake we had brought, because one of his friends was waiting for our table. These people are trash, and they treated us like dirt.

I am still in shock over how the manager of Le Pere Pinard treated our group! We were celebrating a friend's birthday and they booked another party right after ours, and would not let us finish our meal! This was the worse dining experience I have ever had. If you are looking for a place to have a dinner party, you should not even consider this place.

I went with some friends and had a fantastic time. The host, Fifi (his real name), is charming and flirty; we didn't have reservations, but he came by every now and then to chat and reassure us we would have a table. The wines are amazing--the bartender was knowledgeable and speedy. The shepherd's pie is delicious--steaming, crusty mashed potatoes covering beef and vegetables. The flank steak was tender and flavorful. The DJ played some great music as well. Note: Everyone was smoking and it was really loud--you may not like it if you want to hear well or keep your lungs clear. But if you don't mind that, you'll love it.
