It's all about the Butterfish at Roy's. Very attentive and friendly service. Misoyaki butterfish is awesome. Everything else is good to very good. Decent atmosphere but at 2nd and mission it's kind of a dead area in the evening. With so many great original or one of a kind restaurants in San Francisco it's hard to go here over them. If you're in this neighborhood go a few more blocks down the street to Town Hall.

I went to Roy's for lunch recently and ordered what I thought was the "lunch" size (i.e., smaller) portion of scallops -- and even that, at around $18, seemed quite expensive. When the bill came, I found that because I had not specified the smaller portion, I had been served the "large" portion -- about five medium-size, but by no means large, scallops -- at a cost of almost $30!! I paid the bill, but called the restaurant when I got back to my office because I thought I had been overcharged -- that I had been charged the "dinner" price for the "lunch" serving. The manager was quite nice (he did, in fact, offer me a refund, but I didn't feel comfortable accepting it since I had supposedly been served the $30 portion), and he explained that they charge by weight, not by number of scallops. This may be explained somewhere on the menu, but I don't recall seeing it, and neither did the waiter ask me when I ordered whether I wanted the small or large serving. Also, even if they do charge by weight, and even though I realize scallops are expensive, I find it very difficult to believe that that amount of seafood (along with about a half dozen of what looked like green beans and a couple of pieces of white-rice-and-nori-only sushi) is worth almost $30. SO, IN SUMMARY: good food, but be careful to specify serving size, and ask how much food you'll be getting for those fancy prices.

The food was great, good wine but the most exceptional part was the wait staff. We had the sweetest, most attentive waiter ever. We ordered the Boat appetizer, Maui Waui Salad, shrimp entree and cod entree (which was amazing). The waiter felt that the appetizers took too long although we didn't notice and we were not charged for the boat appetizer. That's good service.

This restaurant is very classy. The food is well presented. All of their food in the menu are so flavorful that you can over indulge. My husband and I have been there aboiut 10 times, and each time we order different dishes to try everything in the menu. So far we enjoy Roy's classic Macadamia Crusted Nut White Fish with Butter Sauce and Fire Grilled Filet Mignon. We also like Family Style Canoe Appetizer and the Chocolate Souffle for dessert.

PROS: Great place, great food and alcoholic mixed drinks
CONS: It can get very expensive and may need advanced reservations.

I will NEVER eat here again. Service was just slow and the food was terrible. It seemed like the chef's had an arrogant vibe to them, maybe they could act that way if their food tasted good but it lacked flavor, presentation etc. I have eatin at a lot of restaurants in San Francisco and this is the first time I have ever taken the time to write a bad review, so that should tell you something.

I made reservations ahead of time for my girlfriend's birthday. We were greeted and seated right away at a table near the door. The tables in that area were kind of close together but cozy. We started with the calamari appetizer, which was VERY good. The sauce it was served with was very tasty but wasn't enough, we ended up having to ask for more. Our server was attentive and friendly. She ordered the fillet mignon , very good and I had something I can't remember the name of, but still good. Hers was better. I have to agree with the other reviews about the small portions. But because of the appetizer we were full before we completely full. We had enough room for dessert though. I highly recommend the pineapple upside down cake and molten chocolate cake. Seriously good! Our server brought out a special dessert that had "happy birthday anne" written in chocolate on the plate. The main meal did not stand out to me but I would return because of the appetizers and dessert. The meals were kind of expensive but the experience and service were worth it.

Roy's was recommended by my hotel concierge and it was the absolute BEST recommendation ever. The food was out of this world. I tried things i never had before and was pleasantly surprised...what a treat while visiting this city! The staff was professional, knowledgeable and friendly. This was by far one of the best meals i've ever had. You'll get a taste of the culture of San Fran at a price that seems high for an NC girl like my but is totally worth it!

my boyfriend and i had made last minute reservations on our anniversary to eat at roys.. they were able to seat us immediately when we arrived and even asked what the occasion was.. It got a little bit loud because of the bar area, but it was beautiful inside.. The food was delicious EXCEPT for my macademia mahi mahi.. It had a strange taste to it that I couldn't even finish my plate even though the portions are so small!! My boyfriend however, loved his entree.. The best part I would have to say was dessert. They came out with the dessert we ordered and even an extra complimentary cake with "happy anniversary" written on the plate with chocolate syrup. The overall service, and food was great [again, except for my mahimahi].. The portions however were too small.. we were still a little hungry leaving.. and the bill came out to over $200 so its extremely pricey... I would probably go back again, but only for a very special occasion like this was.

oh goodness...i love this place. the first time i visited was for a graduation dinner so i got to try almost everything and it was DELICIOUS. if you are eating with friends be sure to order different items so you can taste them all. if you are really in a bind as to what to order, you will never go wrong with the misoyaki fish.

I love the chocolate scouffle and the food I ordered however I didn't like being so close to the next table. I didn't feel like being so intimate to the couple in the next table and hearing their whole conversation. Overall I like Roy's but they should have better seating and table arrangements.

We took some clients there for dinner last night and weren't thoroughly impressed (5 in our party). We started out with drinks which were fine---No problems there. We also got 2 bottles of wine which were very good. The Seghesio Zin was the better of the two. Then we started with apps which unfortunately were the best part of our eveneing. we shared the shrimp, spare ribs, and crab cakes were phenominal however it went downhill when our salads arrived. two of us got the chicken salad and the other got the mixed greens. neither were very good. they were very earthy tasting and didn't have enough dressing. Then for entrees 3 had the macadamia mahi mahi which was "just ok" according to all. the presentation was better than the actual taste. one person had the filet mignon which was above par--probably the best dinner out of the group and the last person had the ono which was a bit undercooked. I would not come back for dinner, however i would definitely sit at the bar and have a few drinks and appetizers. the total bill came to about $90 per person which was a little high given the quality of the entrees. the service was very good and attentive without being annoying. that's my $0.02

I agree with one of the review. Very mediocre food for high price. Service was bad. Our waitress acted like she was annoyed all the time, totally ignored our table. We had to ask other waitress to fill our glasses and such. I have ordered some blend shrimp on a stick, the sauce could have easily been ketchup mixed with wasabi. My Ahi Tuna (28$) was really blend and small. My friend ordered a filet mignon which wasn't exactly was she was hoping for. She got a more less delicate piece of meat, thinly cut. That wasn't a filet (37$). The food came really slowly. We were there at lunch time and our appetizers arrived 40 minutes after we ordered them. Over an hour for our entree which were totally mediocre. I had dessert to go because it was too late and I had to order it with a different waitress because ours totally forgot that we were existing. I am sure the other waitress were much better. To bad that this one was hired in such a trendy restaurant. Great ambiance, bad noise, very muc. Ask for the upstairs room with your reservation.

I've been to the one in Austin, S.F., and L.A. and the food was pretty consistent and delicious. Their prix fixe menu is such a bargain too. Appetizer, entree and dessert for about $30. You can't beat it. Plus I really enjoyed the atmosphere/ambiance in all three.

Oh, and it is a bit romantic - or at least I think so. Dim lighting and delicious food.

I went to Roy's for my anniversary and it was a fabulous evening. Seated promptly for our reservation. The ambience was great, service was fantastic. I ordered a drink that ended up being too sweet for me and they replaced it with a different one at no charge. The manager came around and talked to us and was very friendly. The food was fantastic and I believe our bill came to less than $100 and I found it to be a great value. Highly recommended. I'm looking forward to visiting the Maui restaurant.

I was very excited to dine at Roy's, however, the food & service were horrible!! I ordered the most expensive item on their menu, the "lobster", yet the lobster came to me overcooked with no flavor & ravioli's were too buttery. In overall, not satisfied at all. The manager was surprised of my comments, but didn't seem to concern her.
As a customer, I was not taken care of, which is my main concern for this restaurant. Additionally, as te lobster was market price, I paid a hefty price to be completely unsatisfied. I'm very disappointed!!

I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone nor would I go there again!!

This was consistently one of my favorite restaurants, but the service (or lack thereof) that I experienced on my last visit makes me wonder if I will ever return. Without a doubt the worst service I have experienced. Our waiter essentially ignored us, no dirty plates removed from our table, next course servied with dirty plates still on the table causing them to return the food while the table was cleaned. One molten cake was ordered at the start of the order by me, but my wife was never offered dessert. Just terrible. I should have called for the manager early. He acknowledged that we were mistreated, and comped 50% of the bill, a nice gesture, but our evening was ruined.

Again, the food (and service) here has been consistently good, but use caution if you plan to visit for business or an important evening. Things may be changing here.

i'm not big on fusion, but Roys has won me over. we went during the dine about town promo (1/2005) and i've been back four times since. one of those times was with 2 children (1&2 years old). the staff is always attentive and nice, they are very accomodating to your needs. it is a bit pricey but worth the service and food. the bread rolls are to die for, the ribs are delicious and the molten cake is a best seller! i am truly impressed with the lengths they will go to meet your needs. they had an adorable children's dessert tray too, decorated with flowers!

Love this place for Pan-Asian! The appetizer "boats" offered up a nice variety (the crab cakes and spareribs were tasty). Their blackened ahi was a good entree choice, although the wasabi sauce was all my sinuses could bear (thank goodness the wine kept flowing), it was still very satisfying. The chocolate souffle was heavenly. I've been to Roy's Kahana Grill in Maui and enjoyed the food there much better than the atmosphere, but this one hits it on both food and atmosphere. I went with a group, but it would make a great date restaurant.

You don't have to trek to Hawaii to enjoy a true Japanese-Hawaiian fusion. The food is delish and is an artwork, however prices are quite high. Although the company paid for it...

The place is very pretty, and lighting is fabulous - very important!!! Although it can really be loud espcially during lunch.

Service is awesome, very attentive, professional and knowledgeable - worth the 20% tip.

The food is consistently good (although I wasn't pleased with their Valentine's day gimmick - where they told us we'd be able to order from the normal menu and instead were forced to order from a fairly unappealing list of specials). Mostly fish, some of which will need to be explained to you.

The place is pretty and large.

The servers are a mixed bag - some have been the best I've had at any restaurant, some have been extremely overattentive, and some have been complete slackers. Usually, however, they are on the good side.

This place has become one of my favorite places to eat. It's one of those restaurants that you always want to bring people to, especially if they've never been there before or are out of town. Everytime I've gone, the staff is very attentive. My friend who I took for a girls' night out even said she's never been to a place that the staff was so attentive to all our needs. And the food is fabulous! Not over priced for the quality. I haven't had anything I didn't like yet! Becuase everything is so tastey, you end up ordering alot yet at the end of the meal, you don't feel weighed down.

I have never experienced such bad service from a restaurant before. Both the manager and the waitress were unattentive and rude. We waited an extra half an hour after our reservation time to be seated. The waitress completely forgot a side dish and didn't even apologize for the mistake. There were many more bad incidents. Even though the food was great, the horrible service just ruined the whole experience.

I've eaten here for both lunch and dinner, and found the service at lunch to be superb. Everyone was extremely nice and knowledgeable, from the hostess and the food runner, up to the waiter and the manager. Service at dinner was a bit inconsistent; the waiter seemed confused at times and had to be reminded about our glass of wine. The food has been good overall, particularly the shrimp and pork siu mai in a lemongrass coconut broth. The "Yama Mama" meatloaf was a healthy tasty portion. For dessert, I adore their haupia napoleon. Decor is tropical, without being too kitschy. Love the old black and white photos, and the vibrant paintings in the main dining room.

We recently went to Roy's during the Dine about Town promotion. Not only was the food excellent, but the service was incredible! I haven't had a dining experience in quite a while that was so enjoyable -- definitely how you want to feel after going out to a nice dinner!

Good service overall, I was late for my reservation for half hour and they were able to find me a seat promotly even the placce is pack. The portion of the food is kind of small. Desert is well made.

Had dinner last night at this SOMA restaurant, fourth time over the last several years. Started off with a mixed appetizer of fennel/poke, shrimp/wasabi sauce and cabbage/pork roll. All were very tasty, a good start. Entree was a macadamia nut mahi mahi with butter sauce, good but not great. Dessert was a chocolate souffle in raspberry sauce. Served right out of the oven, the soft molten center was delish and it dissappeared quickly beneath our forks. Decor was quite muted and service decent as usual. I've had better meals at Roy's so I'm hoping that they get back on the ball next time!

I had my birthday celebration here and it was wonderful!! The manager and staff was so helpful and kind-we made reservations ahead of time. It was a week night so it was not so busy. They had a special table reserved for us and gave me free drinks and desert on the house for my birthday. The halibut was delicious and the crab cakes were great too. I would highly reccommend this restaurant to small parties and couples!

Being from Hawaii, Roy's is a nice slice of home. The entrees are a good blend of old local island recipes with new culinary style and flair. Meals are relatively pricey, but well worth the money. The service is excellent, and the ambience ranges from intimate and quaint to busy and loud. Overall, Roy's offers an excellent dining experience and is definitely my favorite restaurant in the City.

And don't forget to try the chocolate souffle, it's ono (Hawaiian for delicious)!

Roy's is our favorite restaurant for Asian-fusion cuisine and reminds us of our great Hawaiian dining experiences.

They serve great fresh fish and you will experience flavors like no other restaurant.

This is a great restaurant for business diners as well. We took a group of 10 from out of town and they loved it! It's equally fun for a romantic "date night."

Go on a weeknight to enjoy the friendly and personable service! You won't get attitude here! Avoid Roy's on special occasions like Valentine's Day in which the restaurant can be a total zoo.
