Lindy was our midwife for the birth of our first child in April 2011, and we recommend her highly. We thought she did a fantastic job, and we credit her for helping us have a wonderful birth experience. I transferred to Lindy from my OB, who I really like a lot, but had an on call group of about 9 other OBs-I wanted to make sure I knew the person who would be delivering my baby. Lindy's bedside manner was very personable, she was great in answering both mine and my husband's questions. Her visits were much less rushed than my OBs had been, and we talked about a wide range of things, such as motherhood, parenting, healthy eating during pregnancy, and labor and parenting practices around the world.

I ended up having an all natural birth at Alta Bates, Lindy was amazing throughout. I never felt institutionalized, it actually was a very empowering experience. I labored at home, and Lindy met us at the hospital once I was very dilated (8cm! didnt mean to go that long without going to the hospital, but I ended up having a rather short labor despite it being my first child). Lindy talked with us on the phone constantly while I labored at home with my husband and mother, until finally I said I wanted to go to the hospital. I was surprised (elated actually) to be so dilated once I got to the hospital. In retrospect, perhaps I should have gotten there earlier. In any event, Lindy encouraged me to go to the hospital whenever I wanted to, I just chose to stay at home to labor longer. It ended up working out wonderfully.

In subsequent postpartum visits, Lindy has been wonderful. When I came in for a 6 week follow up, Lindy spent 2.5hours (!!!) with me as I cried about being sleep deprived and not sure what to do with baby in terms of encouraging sleep habits, and other baby related stresses etc etc. She gave me wonderful advice which we've since implemented, and really made me feel 100% better. She said I could continue to ask for her advice until baby was 18!! :) She is fantastic!!

We recommend Lindy for women with low risk pregnancies who want to try to have a natural birth.

DO NOT USE LINDY JOHNSON.....After reporting several problems during the pregancy, her standard response was "It is okay,; Don't worry, it is normal". I almost lost my daugther and grand-daugther to her inept attitude and care. My daugther was in ICU for over 6 days and hospitalized for over three weeks. My granddaugther survived and was in NICU for over 2.5 months. My daugther is still fighting complications. If not for the great doctors at Alta Bates, they would not be here today. LINDY JOHNSON SHOULD HAVE REFERRED MY DAUGTHER TO AN OBGYN, SHE DID NOT...as a mother, I have to warn other women, PLEASE DO NOT USE LINDY JOHNSON...No one should have to go through the fear of losing a family member because the midwife refuses to acknowledge her limitations or d onot wish to refer a patient to an OB-GYN due to her lost of revenue. Also, be note the other similar reviews and make a smart choice.. CHOSE ANYONE BUT LINDY JOHNSON

Our experience with this midwife was not positive. She has an excellent bedside manner, but as the pregnancy became more high risk her medical advice became questionable. Standard hospital procedures to minimize the risk weren't followed and our newborn a ended up in NICU. She was late arriving at the hospital and seldom around. Thankfully the hospital staff filled in the gap of the missing midwife. Next time we will recommend staying with an OB/GYN. Even if her bedside manner isn't the best, it's the doctors training, experience and medical knowledge that maybe needed. This was a hard learned lesson.

I would HIGHLY recommend Lindy Johnson. Lindy delivered my first baby and we were so pleased with her support, insight and care that I knew she was the only one that I would want to deliver our second. Our second was born this past week and once again Lindy showed that she is not only an incredibly competent clinician but also a caring midwife who keeps the interests of her patients first (not her career as some have stated). I had a fairly routine delivery but the placenta wouldn't come properly and I started to hemorrhage. She got everyone involved as appropriate and since my husband couldn't be with me in the O.R. she stayed with me, holding my hand and explaining everything that was happening. She was even advocating for me to get specific kind of anesthesia that she knew would be more comfortable for me. I saw her interact with both the OB attending, anesthesia and many RN's- all of which was professional and correct. As a family nurse practitioner myself who does alot of prenatal care, I only wish I could give the kind of support and care to all of my patients that she has given to me and my family.

I switched to Lindy mid-way through my pregnancy as my OB was not very encouraging about my prospects for a VBAC (I had a c-section with my first). Lindy was instantly supportive, helpful and encouraging. I managed to have the drug-free birth I had hoped for, and I don't think that would have happened without her. She also gave us some much appreciated advice about coming home with the baby, how to handle the first few days and weeks with our older child, the role of my husband, etc. I just found her to be incredibly wise, warm and caring. Definitely would recommend her.

I had a very similar experience as Cinzia H. Lindy delivered my son 6 years ago. We had a very unusual and distressful birth that we later found out could have ended terribly for both of us. With the exception of a breech birth and the emergency c-section (I was able to deliver vaginally), my experience was absolutely identical to the other reviewer - to a T.

To make matters worst, I had a terrible recovery and she refused to let me see a doctor. After three excrutiatingly painful weeks my parents finally took matters into their own hands and inisisted I see a doctor. Within 30 seconds, he was able to identify the problem and corrected it.

It seems to me normal births are her thing, but as soon as there is anything in the least bit unusual, she turns into a monster. cold. agressive. hurtful. unprofessional. reckless. and most of all, with a big chip on her shoulder.

I later found out that she has a very poor reputation among delivery professionals, including nurses and midwives.

In contrast, my second birth with a doula (friend) and Kaiser nurses was beautiful.

I wouldn't wish Lindy on my worst enemy.

Lindy delivered our daughter in August 2008, and I couldn't have asked for a better person to guide my family and I through the experience.

Friends and family thought we were nuts for using someone in the East Bay when we live in San Francisco. But after a few phone conversations with Lindy, I felt like I'd found the person I wanted to deliver our child.

She is very knowledgeable, calm and caring, and has been delivering babies at Alta Bates for 22 years, I believe. She's very kind -- but doesn't hesitate to tell it like it is, either, which was important to me. She also treated me like an intelligent adult -- which is a trait I've often found woefully lacking in many health professionals.

I had a rough labor (at least it seemed that way to me, but then that isn't so surprising I'd imagine), and Lindy and Miriam (our amazing Alta Bates nurse) supported me and helped to draw out strength and resolve I didn't even know I'd had.

I don't doubt that I owe having had a birth that, despite ultimately needing induction with Pitocin 30 hours after my water had broken, involved *no* drugs for pain relief -- in very large part to them. When I was waffling and felt like I was going downhill due to exhaustion (it ended up being a 43 hour labor) and the intensity of the contractions -- they did not falter in their support. Seeing how certain they were that I could do it made me believe that perhaps I actually could.

They helped me -- one contraction and one push at a time -- deliver our healthy, beautiful baby girl into the world.

Should my husband and I be blessed with a second child at some point, I will not think twice about crossing the bridge again during labor -- during rush hour, if I must -- to have her deliver them as well.

I was an older first-time mom at 33.
Lindy was calm, warm, and helped me through a long, difficult natural delivery (in hospital) without rushing me to the C-section that I feel would have been inevitable with a less committed professional. She made the right calls at the right time and I found this site because I was googling her contact info to recommend her to a friend who is newly pregnant for the first time.
I feel like my daughter and I were both lucky in finding Lindy.

We delivered our daughter in the fall of 2007 with midwife Lindy Johnson. We had a fantastic experience with Lindy throughout the prenatal care and delivery experience. Lindy was calm, compassionate, and caring. I highly recommend Lindy to anyone who wants a midwife who approaches birth with a down-to-earth, mama-centered philosophy.

I'm very sorry to hear about the previous experience listed but that was so different from our experience with Lindy. She was a wonderful support throughout our pregnancy. We had a wonderful delivery - also in January of 2007. We are currently pregnant again and will be using her a second time. She is very supportive, encouraging and helpful. We also used a doula - Erin Crowe.

Lindy's support was great in that she encouraged my husband to be fully involved in the process which I believe has helped him to be the super involved dad that he is.We did end up delivering naturally with minimal interventions and Lindy was appropriately supportive the entire time.

I DO NOT recommend Lindy Johnson, CNM. She was my midwife in January 2007 and I would not wish her on anyone. Despite my concerns that my baby was breech, on the basis of an inconclusive vaginal exam (where she herself admitted she didn't actually feel my babies head), she maintained that my baby was head down and never suggested an ultrasound even as my pregnancy became more and more uncomfortable (because my baby was breech!). I went into labor and was progressing fast. On the phone Lindy Johnson assumed since it was my first child that I would have a long labor. When I started pushing in my bathtub after 2 hours we raced to the hospital. I was 91/2 cm and my baby was breech. I ended up with an emergency c-section. Lindy Johnson behaved horribly during the C-section. Rather than explain to us what would happen in the operating room, something we were unprepared for, she was embarrassed that she had messed up, had a chip on her shoulder even coping attitude to the doctors and made the whole experience even more traumatizing than it had to be. Her follow-up care in the hospital was insensitive, hurtful, and unprofessional. When we told her we no longer wanted to see her, her only concern was her money! Do NOT use Linda Johnson, CNM as your midwife. She gave me fake hugs starting the first day we met her but she proved to be more concerned with her "career" than the physical health of myself and my daughter, more concerned about her money than doing the right thing, and absolutely oblivious to the emotional damage she caused. I think it is time for Lindy to retire. There are many wonderful midwives to choose from in the Bay Area. Don??t risk your health and emotional wellbeing by hiring Lindy.
