Message from Brother Jimmy's BBQ

Brother Jimmy's brings good times and North Carolina style 'cue to the Upper East Side. All the Barbecue is slow smoked in-house over hickory wood. The ribs come in three varieties: Northern (sweet), Southern (spicy) and dry rub. Pulled Pork, Smoked Brisket, BBQ Chicken, hush puppies and frickles are a few of the signature items they serve. A fun line of specialty cocktails and a very active bar scene make Brother Jimmy's more then just another BBQ restaurant.

Editorial by Citysearch

In Short
Opened by Duke and UNC alumni, this barbecue joint and sports bar gives nostalgic college grads a little Southern comfort, especially on game days. Diners seeking ribs, sliced-beef sandwiches, and popcorn shrimp sit at red-and-white-checked tables in the small front area, while drinkers congregate further back amid university paraphernalia and 17 TVs. Loud rock and country make conversation a challenge, but guests stuffing themselves with brisket, burgers, fried pickles and baked beans hardly seem concerned.

O Brother

by Kenny S. | insider Insider | Rank: 23,412

Brother Jimmy's is a great spot to get some drinks after a hard day of work. Love the atmosphere and people. BBQ food is out of this world, steak tips and wings are great.

delicious

by Cassie M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,600

I went here and the food was great. The service was a little slow, but since i was with several people, i guess i could see why. there was an upstairs for more seating, and there was a bar and a few tables downstairs. Food was great.

lets get some bbq

by rey m. | insider Insider | Rank: 29,388

Bbq at its best. You'll have a greasy good time at Jimmy's. The food is great and sticky and you'll have plenty to look at. The atmosphere provides a perfect social setting. Go on a weekend and have a blast!

its just FUN

by TimtotheO

I have been going here for years...this is a straightforward place. Cold beers, great music, and outstanding food. Oh - and it is THE place to watch the Yanks and Gmen.

Pros: Best BBQ and Cold Beers

Cons: This isn't take your girl on a romantic date place

poor excuse for BBQ and food in general

by Jeddy

sliders were hockey pucks, mac and cheeese was dry,and curdled, pulled pork tasted days old, ribs, not sure how they are cooked, but tasted like they were steamed, brisket was a poor excuse for BBQ. overall food was terrible, none in the party was happy.. as we are staying in NY for the next week, we'll deifnately look elsewhere to eat BBQ

Pros: decent service

Cons: it's not barbecue

Terrible

by lizzyred8

This place is terrible. I've eaten in numerous times, as well as ordered take-out. The food has no taste, and for bbq thats just ridiculous. Luckily, they provide marinades on the table for you to apply at your leisure. I have been consistently disappointed here, and have gotten to the point where I will eat nearly anywhere else. O, and the free fishbowl, despite being free, is not worth it - its pretty gross.

Pros: Cheap Drinks

Cons: Food, Drink Quality

Bad Service

by maribel1081

Went to this location on friday and had no service at all. A friend and I arrived around 830p and were told there was a short wait to be seated. We had no problem waiting since it was a little crowded. We waited about 10 min and were excited to be seated so quickly. Everything went downhill from there! We waited 15 min as waitresses passed our table to serve other customers. I tried to be patient but after a table of 5 that was seated after us was served I got up and spoke to the Hostess who apologized and told me she would get someone to us. Waited another 10 min and then left without anyone even taking our drink order after 30min! Thankfully we then went to the 92nd & 3rd Brother Jimmy's Bait Shack and the service & food was Great. I recommend skipping this location and going to 92nd, even though its a little far you won't regret it.

Ugh...

by FBeck

I know how much most people have food snobs who bash their favorite restaurants, but the food here is a disgrace to Southern cooking. Given the poverty and lack of industrialization of much of the South's history - the cuisine tends to emphasize cheap ingredients cooked very simply. Fried chicken, bbq, mashed potatoes, deviled eggs, etc. - nothing fancy or expensive here.

Given such a low hurdle to jump over, Jimmy's BBQ fails abysmally. Crunchy food comes out soggy, hot food comes out cold, and everything tastes awful. I'll give two stars since the service was ok, they make some effort in providing an atmosphere (as tacky as it is), and other people seem to enjoy it.

Go to Great Jones cafe if you want good Southern food in the city. Or...anywhere else.

Great BBQ!

by uesgirlie

The food is amazing, the BBQ is amazing, anything you order will be good. Also good for watching games and having a beer. After 9pm or so though, this turns into an immediately-post-college scene, so watch out for drunk kids.

Pros: great food

Cons: young, immature crowd

Inept bouncer and Barbie

by grrrster

It was my first time at Brother Jimmy's, and I was meeting a group of new people there. When asking the bouncer if anyone from the group was here, he brushed me off and told me to ask around in the back (where it was obviously not the type of group I was referring to). When I returned, he brushed me off to look in the other direction and was very unhelpful and unfriendly. The blond woman working there was even more unhelpful and unprofessional. She was snippy and mentioned that they get people in there all the time. If she were a good "hostess", she would be observant, and if someone had mentioned that they were part of a group and that others were coming, then (as at other restaurants) she could point the people arriving to the group. She even snipped, "This isn't that big of a place. Just look around!". When I finally found my group, I told the bouncer and Barbie that if anyone else comes in asking for the group that we were over at a certain part of the bar. The bouncer quipped, "Oh, because certainly THEY look like touch football players" (the group). The bartender was friendly and helpful, though. For being in a "service" industry, I was not impressed with Brother Jimmy's at all. Definitely not Southern hospitality.

Cons: Unfriendly, unintelligent, and unprofessional front staff

The Disneyland of BBQ

by emcelvain

If you've ever eaten real barbeque, ever been to an authentic dive, or spent any time outside of a large urban area, you will be horribly disappointed. Fake southern accents, chicken wire around the bar, below average food at best...the whole package is really fake and even more lame.

Pros: um...we got a table fast? the waitress was nice

Cons: pretty much everything else

One word: Frickles

by veggie2001

That's all. Fried pickles: Try em, you'll come back craving more. Oh and they have skeeball, that's pretty sweet.

Pros: FRICKLES!

Cons: recent college grad hangout

Really good food/drinks but they were very rude!

by denny1

Have been a big fan of brother jimmy's for a long time, but was there the other night and was very offended. There was a group of us there and literally 2 minutes after paying a $400 bill they had the nerve to comment that they wanted our table for other people. Plus, a few of us were drinking the swampwater (a $17 dollar drink) and one of the guys working there tried to take it off the table when we weren't even finished! I told him that we were still drinking it and he said that there was only a little left anyway and that he needed it for other tables! I say take the $400 we just handed over and go buy yourselves some more fishbowls! I couldn't believe how rude they were!

I love Brother Jimmy's

by hdueitt

We live right around the corner and either go in or order out at least once a week. Always a fun time with cheap drinks, good food and good music. For all the southerners...they have southern appreciation night with 25% food on Wednesdays! This Sunday even Ashley Olsen and some of her friends were there. Great place to watch games and bring friends visiting from out of town.

Pros: food, drinks, crowd

Best Place, Best Bartenders

by mattdmd

My guy friends and I went last night to just hang out and drink a few beers, and we hung out at the very crowded bar. The gorgeous blonde bartender, who's name I wish I knew, made us feel like we were her only customers and cracked jokes with us all night. The food was great, the music was good, all in all a solid time. I would go back any saturday!

Pros: great bartender

Cons: crowded

Brother Jimmy's rocks!

by southerngirl22

I went to Brother Jimmy's on Second Ave. with a group of girlfriends from home. We're from North Carolina and we had the best time! Our server was southern and downhome nice. The ribs had a lot of flavor, I would recommend getting the combo ribs and trying them all. Plan on a lot of eating and then lots drinking at the bar afterwards. The bartenders are cute and fun to talk to- the music is also good an even mix of country and rock and some hip hop thrown in there. We were having the most fun singing along, just a fun fun night , we can't wait to go back. Ya'll should definitey check out Brother Jimmys esp. you southerns who need a quick fix of home.

Brother, Oh brother!

by vandybbq

The food seems to have gone south for eternity. Lots of competition and I don't think they can keep up. The place is still great to watch a game, and be a frat boy again, but so are so many others! The waitresses are nice, but seem to have been there too long, and are not interested unless you are their regular and tipping big and filling their ego. They know who they want to serve and who they don't. Good luck if you choose to go, it can be hit or miss, more often miss. BBQ has gotten big in the city and they can't compete, oh, and I think they raised their prices, again!

Pros: College Sports

Cons: Service, Food

Just like sweet home carolina...

by jennylee1

As a native of North Carolina, I had a heck of a time findin' REAL bbq. Brother Jimmy's pulled pork bbq is the most authentic in the city. Now I don't have to travel all the way back to Carolina to get my pig fix.

Pros: Fun, party crowd, ACC games always on

Everyone was extremely friendly and went out of there way to make sure my friends and co-workers were satisfied. one more thing, you have to get the mac & cheese!
