As a very involved, borderline spazzy parent I spent a great deal of time observing the directors, staff and classroom management practices. Here is what I observed:
*The Directors*
Although another review has said that the directors are in the classrooms due to absentee employees I have observed them in the classrooms everyday because they want to be. This is very refreshing to me as I want the director/owner of my child's daycare to WANT to be around and educate my child! They seem to be very involved and love the students.
*The Facility*
+ As a parent safety is very important to me. I absolutely love that in order to enter the facility you must either A) have an electric key to unlock the door or B) ring the doorbell in order to gain entrance.
+Each classroom is stocked full of fun and educational toys and learning embellishments.
+The classroom walls are adorned with children's art which supports the fact that arts and crafts are apart of their curriculum.
+when picking up my child during naptime I have observed employees sanitizing the children's toys and nap mats.
+ The outside play area is also full of fun toys. Slides, teeter totter, many bikes and scooters, balls, sandbox with tons of dump trucks and shovels, balance beams etc.
+ Most classrooms have "pets" like a turtle, hermit crabs and fish. I love that they have incorporated nature and the kids seem to love watching the animals eat, walk etc.
-Although the children's toys and nap mats are clean, the floors and common areas, such as halls and classroom countertops, are cluttery and unclean.
*The Staff*
+ Although the directors may not always be available in the front office, I have always been greeted by a staff member with a cheerful hello and a genuine smile!
+ Almost everyday the class has a full roster of students. They keep the teacher-child ratio way under the 1-12 state ratio. Often times there will be a 1-6 ratio! Awesome!
+Most of the staff use positive redirection and always use kind and encouraging words with the kids (even if the child has been defiant or uncooperative).
+ They encourage the children "to use their words". They empower the students who may otherwise identify as "victims" to advocate for themselves, while the "perpetrators" are encouraged to express with words what they want or need instead of using their hands.
+ Because of the lower teacher-child ratio the teachers are able to sit with the child during "job times" and really talk to, and teach the children. ("job time" is a period of time during the day where each child picks what educational embellishment they would like to engage in).
*The Curriculum*
+ Although a good portion of the day the child is able to choose their activity, there are times of the day that are mandatory for each child to participate such as circle time. They practice letters, read stories and sing songs. During this time of the year the children are practicing their Christmas songs for their holiday recital where they sing for their families.
Overall We are quite pleased with this facility. I hope this helps! :-)

I just wanted to clear a better picture for parents looking to child care, then the negative comments that have been written. By reading these reviews, they obviously have been written by ex employees who can't move on, or people with hate filled in their heart. My husband and I have been bring our child since portside opened up in june of last year. We have seen a huge change in our child, and really hope parents that are interested into signing up their child give portside a chance, please don't believe all you read. LIke the review below me is more hatred then facts. My child works with the teacher that this is person is accusing of being abusive, and it isn't true, the children all like him, and he works so well with them, it saddens me that some one would be so cold, and write something so ugly and untrue. Portside cares for the children, They are always open and always ready to help. If their is a complain, something parents don't like they quickly fix the issue.

We have two children enrolled at Portside and are now entering our second year there. As we transitioned from another Montessori school in the region, I can tell you that the Portside rates are scaled lower than other Montessori schools. Those that complain about the tuition fees are probably comparing Portside rates to rates of in-home daycare. Maryhill, Phoenix and other Montessori schools are all in the same ballpark and several are more expensive actually. I really enjoy the fact that Portside offers my kids a school that was built brand new, as opposed to some of the alternatives that we considered that frankly were a little rundown.

To those that complain about Portside's internal fairness or small pay raises, your frustration is obvious but you also probably do not know the full story on some of the situations. Personally, I took a 5% pay cut this year due to the economy and about 50 people in my building were laid off as well. I would count my blessings that you and your co-workers are continuing to receive incremental raises (albeit small) and that you are still employed in an region that is currently posting 12% unemployment.

For me the proof that Portside is a quality school is with my kids smiles and their genuine affection for the teachers there (which I think is mutual). We also have received numerous compliments regarding our children and their well developed life skills and vocabulary. I give much of that credit to Portside.

It is true that the directors of the school are new to the business end of running a school but there is a plus to that. Other schools have directors that are entrenched in their ways and unwilling to change or improve their practices. With time, Portside will find their groove on the HR end of the business. Just keep providing the feedback. In the meantime, I would like to compliment the directors on their accessibility to the parents like me and their willingness to receive feedback from us both "the good" and "the bad". I am very satisfied and look forward to several more fun years at Portside.

we really like the school. The teachers are friendly and my 4 year old daughter loves it. I wish they did more teaching, but our number one concern is lack of shade outside and they don't cover the sand box at night. That said we really do like the school and staff.

I've been looking for a preschool center to take my four year old son. I've noticed a lot of centers do weekly cost which seems cheaper, but doing the math comes out to be the same as Portside Montessori. I'm glad I signed him up, he loves his teachers, and his vocabulary has improved. Everyday he comes home and shows me something new he's learned. They really do a good job preparing children for Kindergarten. If your looking for a place that will give your children a fun, educational experience please look in to Portside.

This preschool is the best. I have two children (infant & Preschool), they both love it here. My preschool son comes home with something new he learned everyday. My Infant gets so much attention from the staff. There is no price limit for your child's care. You pay for what you get. I think it is very worth it.

I agree this center is a bit pricey, especially for infant care, but I think it is a great center. The people are nice and caring and my child seems to like going here. If you are looking for cheaper care I would definitely shop around for a different montessori center.

I feel this school is a bit pricey but I think that my child receives great care! :) If anyone is looking for cheaper care this would not be the place. If you are looking for caring people I would recommend this center.

My 3yr old son loves Portside! The teachers are great, nice, calm, aware of the classroom activities. They teach manners and praise accomplishments, among everything else. I think Portside is a great start for preschool--my son has learned so much from it so far, his slow communication skills developed at such a fast pace: he went from a handful of words at 2.5 to speaking in full sentences at 3.
It is a bit pricey but it's worth every penny. If you are looking for a cheap childcare in someone's backyard, this is not it. If you are looking to expand your child's mind and capabilities while you are working, then this is definitely the place for you. It is a secured building, helps keep all students and staff safe from potential harm.

I do not think this child care center met my needs. Staff here does not seem sincere, and child care is extremely expensive. I hope you are paying your workers benefits because you should be able to afford it with the rates that you are charging everyone!
