My 10-year-old son went to Camp Campbell last summer and it was a highlight of his summer (which says a lot since he went to many fun day camps plus had a great vacation). We were all a bit nervous about him being away for 5 nights, but he had a GREAT time. These people know how to run a camp! The counselors were wonderful, and the children had many fabulous activities in a beautiful outdoor setting. Our child knew no one going and this was not a problem. About half the kids come sans buddy, but all leave with new friends! The setting is the summer camp of lore...Small cabins set in the redwoods with a dining hall, campfire center, etc. Oozing with charm from the rock arch entrance on. Not "state of the art" but so what! This is part of the appeal. Camp Campbell offers archery, crafts, swimming, evening campfires, capture the flag games, etc, etc. The "swamp monster" (a dressed up camp counselor) even "visited" one night. My kid had a BALL and we felt better knowing he was only 45 minutes away from our San Jose home in case of illness or injury. The camps are co-ed, (separate cabins for boys and girls, natch) and run most of the summer. The price is reasonable and price tiers are offered based on the honor system. Camps are offered for children entering 3rd grade and up.
