My husband took me to Vermilion for my 30th birthday. We arrived for our 8:45p reservation on time and were seated within 15 minutes, not too bad especially since it is restaurant week in Chicago. Our waitress came over after about 15

U could not have asked for a more flavorful experience. I doubt I will ever taste food more fantastic or have better service! Maybe if I opened my own place I would be treated better but I doubt it. Whatever they are doing here they should keep it going and spread it everywhere!

Extremely disappointing. Most food was served tepid; flavors on many dishes bland. Fell very short from the interesting descriptions on the menu. Service was awkward. Took 20 minutes to get 3 drinks--which were weak and missing a key ingredient (the chili pepper). The Lobster (their signature dish) was the worst of all. It was overcooked and the bland sauce was starting to congeal over by the time it was served to us. The restaurant was half empty at 7 pm on a Saturday--should have tipped us off that this was no longer the hot spot all the reviews from a couple of years ago indicated. Way overpriced for the quality.

One recommendation to the owners of Vermillion, as a Indian food connosieur, I recommend you buy round trip tickets to Swagath Restaurant in Defense Colony, New Delhi. This is Indian cuisine executed at its finest.... It is only then that you will see how far you fall short of brilliance.. Come back, and realize that experimentation with discernment is bound to lead to less that stellar results- which is what Vermillion typifies. Indian cuisine can truly be masterful, but it simply is not at Vermillion.

Best wishes.

Could not recommend this place more! The Indian-Latin spice combination was excellent and unique. It might be a little strong for those who don't like heat, but for me it was perfect. I really enjoyed the scallop appetizer which was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. The steak was the perfect temperature, tender and well spiced and the crab konkani really brought together the best of Latin and Indian spice. Our server was also very attentive and went out of her way to make my birthday special. Throughout the night, the service was great and anticipated our needs without being intrusive. At the end of the night without prompting (she checked our ids for the spiced white sangria) she brought us a mango torte with birthday wishes written in chocolate in an elegant script. The care that went into the food, the atmosphere and the service really impressed me and I hope to return soon.

Cons: a bit pricy

We were so disappointed with this place. The food was below average, so was the service and the price was outrageous for the food we got. The Konkani crab wasn't very Konkani at all and had the distinct taste of raw red chillies -not appetizing. We ordered a chicken curry which evidently came with naan. Well, the naan wasn't ready so the server brought the curry with rice and then stuck us with a bill for it. That was not classy at all, considering we didn't really order the rice at all. We were charged for extra servings of rice and naan with a thali which was terrible considering the small portions they serve out. The chocolate cake for dessert was pretty good. The chicken curry and other Indian veggies were average but not extraordinary. Overall do not waste your money on this place.

The ambience is good, and the art decor is very pleasing to the eye. This, along with the layout of the restaurant, lends to a cozy or relaxing atmosphere. The ginger lychee and ginger pomegranate martinis are out of this world. The appetizers are "almost" cooked - sort of like "medium" steak - still partially raw inside, or not marinated completely, as the case may be. The daikon salad was good. Overall, the creativity of eclectic recipes is above average, and the presentations are very appealing, and that's where it ends; the food taste is nothing out of the ordinary, and for the price you pay for the food, you are guaranteed to feed 2 or 3 times as many people in several of the great restaurants this town has to offer. In fact, if you go to India-town or Chinatowan, you'll be able to feed 4 times as many people, and have an enjoyable meal. Unless you have extremely large amounts of disposable income, don't bother to spend your money here - and don't mistake this restaurant for the namesake in London - they are not connected. Even on an expense account, I'd rather take my guests to a restaurant where they'll enjoy the meal.

Cons: Price for value

We were looking for a good restaurant around downtown area. After a lot of searching, we decided to try something new. After trying it, I don?t think that there was anything new about this restaurant. The place looks like a spa and it is very loud. The food sounds better on the menu than on your table. The only thing Indian is their sauces and by the way I had better for a lot cheaper at a real Indian restaurant on Devon. I don?t consider the food to be South American. I tried lots of South American dishes and they are nothing like them. It takes more than meat, cilantro and lime to make a South American dish. The portions are very small and unless you are used to eat small portion, eat something before going. The food takes forever to cook (we waited 1 hour for a steak!!!!). The only thing good about this restaurant is the service, but what should your response be when your waiter comes at your table every 15 minutes and you don?t have any food on your table?

I really like Indian food and I really like Latin food but something about the fusion here just didn't work. I didn't find any of the dishes to be flavorful, plain and simple.

I have only been here twice but Vermilion has already made it into my top 5 favorite restaurants in Chicago. The food is creative and bursting with intriguing flavor. The restaurant is gorgeous and the service impeccable. I picked Vermilion out of countless options to spend New Years because of my previous positive experience and was actually blown away. The 7-course meal with champagne pairings was phenomenal! The vegetarian equivalents to the "regular" courses were very well thought-out and executed (e.g. the hearts of palm prepared and dressed in the same way as the scallops). The accompanying champagne concoctions were outstanding and beautiful to look at (my favorite one was something paired with either habanero or jalapeno although the pear was also fantastic) - some with fresh flowers adorning the glass. Anyone I have recommended Vermilion to also loves it and I have never heard anything negative about it firsthand.

Pros: Perfect trifecta: fantastic food, service and ambience

Cons: None

I took one of my clients here for a nice dinner, and I have to say it was the most I have ever paid in Chicago for a comparable place (never been to Charlie Trotters'). The overall experience was quite pleasant and we ended up staying for more than 2 hours, service was quite good and no one rushed us. But I wish we had a better table, we ere seated right next to another table with 3 other gentlemen who kept bumping into us. This was strange considering how empty the restaurant was on Wednesday evening.

We started out with 3 different Tapas among the 2 of us (quite small portions) and there were quite expensive (between $10-$15 each), all of them had an Indian component like Chick-pea Vadas or Cilantro Chutney, mixed with something Brazilian like tamarind or Chocolate sauce. Fish Ceviche with Avacados was the best of the lot.

Similarly entrees' were also on the smaller side but filling after all the appetizers. My guest had a Fillet Mignon (Brazilian style with a few good Indian chutneys) , he was less than thrilled about the meat, but overall happy with his selection.

I had a SriLankan style barbecued fish, which was surprisingly spicy. It was a whole Tilapia (I think)- bones and all, soaked in a Rasam (spicy gravy) served with a side order of Basmati rice. Fish was prepared well with lots of flavors, while it was some work to pick through the bones quite well worth it. I couldn't finish my meal as it was a bit on the spicy side (and I am an Indian).

Finally, we shared a dessert tray with Mango Flan, Chocolate decadence (with fresh berries) and Shahi Tukda (Royal Delight), a typical Indian dessert. All good but portions were too small to try a 2nd taste even among the two of us.

On the whole, I would certainly recommend this place for someone on an expense account, who wants to try out a high-end eclectic restaurant in Chicago. It would have to be really special occasion before I go back.

I was so excited to try this new place with some friends. The ambiance was great and the wait staff was very friendly. We ordered a wonderful chili mussel appetizer with some naan. But everything after that was a bit disappointing. This was a really fun place and we wanted to like it so much, but the food was a bit lackluster and the desserts were actually almost inedible.

One word....Flavor!

I ended up at Vermilion with a bunch of work buddies. Typically, I am not a spicy food guy, but I was along for the ride and I said I will give it a shot.

Really very good food with an interesting mixture of spices. I went with the chicken with the cilantro and mint flavors for my dinner. I would highly recommend it. I did taste the lamb, and even though I wouldn't order lamb for myself, if you are into that dish I would highly recommend it as well. Vermilion also has a tapas menu that I am going to try on my next go round.

Other thing I really liked about the restaurant was the ambience. Modern, clean lines with interesting black and white photos throughout. I didn't get the stuffy feeling, but this is certainly not a place that I would come in jeans and a sweatshirt. You need to look sharp to match the feel of the bar area and restaurant.

I had a great time and I will be back.

My experience Friday night at Vermilion so disappointing I had a a friend visiting from out of town and decided the fusion of latin American and Indian cuisine would make for some fun drinks and unique entrees. We did not make a reservation, but planning on going about 9pm and were perfectly content having a few drinks at the bar (maybe even an appetizer) while waiting for a table. The bar service was terrible. We waited at least 15 minutes before our drink order was even taken and the bar was not at full headcount. After we finally got our first round of drinks we took them to a bar table to relax while we waited. No one ever came to ask if we needed round, so we had to keep going up to the bar. After each round, we were asked to cash out in case out table came up. Out table was taking a bit longer then we hoped so we decided to order a few aps and a bottle of wine to hold us over. The aps took 40 minutes to come out. Just as we started eating the aps the table finally freed up. We asked if the food could get brought to the table which we were told it would. Then another server suggested it would "just be easier" if we ate our appetizers at the bar and then moved. When we finally settled into our table, we were looking forward to a great meal as we had waited a very long time and hungry. When our food finally arrived, once again an unacceptable delay time, I received the wrong dish and my friend's steak came out grey when it was ordered medium rare. What a shame. We asked to speak to the manager who did apologize but didn't offer to do anything, other then get me the right meal. They did end up giving us a dessert, but honestly, none of the group are dessert eaters so the gesture, though recognized, was not really in par with the errors. I was embarrassed because here it was Saturday night and I was trying to show my out of town guest an amazing time. Chicago has so many great restaurants. I would pick a better one then Vermilion.

Excellent Fusion Food!!! My date and I went there on a busy Friday night, and by the end of the meal we both walked out quite impressed. Our meal started out with an excellent bottle of wine recommended by our server, and two appetizers, lamb chops and the ceviche, both were excellent and paired nicely with the wine. Our entrees followed shortly after, I had the fillet, and my date had the fish stew. The fillet was cooked to temperature and tasted great but half way through I was more interested in the stew. Desserts fell on par with the entire meal, and overall a great dining experience.

I love spicier food, I love Latin food, and Indian food as well. This place was really a dream come true for me. The server came over but notices we where catching up and did not want to interrupt us. I thought wow, considerate already. We saw a spicy list of cocktails on the drink list. I knew I had to try one. It was a jalapeno peach drink. I loved it. I started off with some scallops, rich and smokey. I stole one of my friends lamb chops and was only a tad jealous because they had more heat. We ordered a bottle of viognier, later I would come to realize it was a perfect selection our meal. I let the server know to take may food up a few notches with the heat. We went on to a sea food stew as a soup coarse. Gorgeous dish, heat rounded out with the cooling coconut milk. I had the special, a little lobster tail with the fillet my friend had the veal. I wanted to stop but everything was so delectable I had to see what dessert was all about. We shared a molten chocolate cake that was heaven. I would absolutely be back. Next time I will just let the server order for me and just go along for the ride.

so, i had reservations at a different restaurant last weekend, i won't name any names, and when we showed up, it took someone over 15 min to approach us. my partner and I decided to leave and find something else in the area. we went into vermilion and immediately fell in love. the decor, the music just jived perfectly. we were sat with no problem and quickly greeted with a "unique" drink list. i had the pear, lime and chili drink while my partner had the lychee ginger martini..two words..aawwwee-ssoommee. i did not understand how the fusion of indian and latin american worked until i was walked thhrough the menu. we tried the blue corn scallops and the lamb chops to begin with, and then the signature special the server recommended as well as the whole fish. we ended with a half bottle of rose that was rare. it was an anniversary dinner, and it's one that WE WILL remember. we are from new york and we were blown away by the whole experience and cannot wait to come back to chicago just to visit vermilion!

What a great dining experiance. my boyfriend was in from out of town and i called to make a reservation and let them know that it was a special occasion, when we got to there we got sat at the table right on time and they had taken the time to put an extra candle and beautiful rose petals on the table. i hadnt even asked for any of that, it was lovely.
the server was a sweetheart, he made a point to welcome my boyfriend in from out of town, i can only assume that they made a note of that in my reservation which i thought was really considerate. he was greatly attentive but not hanging around the table too much. we asked him about the menu and answerd all of our questions without making us feel stupid or that we were taking up too much of his time. The food was outstanding, everything came to the table hot and the presentation was great. we took most of the servers reccomndations and they were spot on. definitley start off with some tapas (the scallops and the mussels were to die for) and the lobster and the filet that we got were perfect. we didnt feel rushed whcih we were a litle worried about. it really was a great experiance. the prices were spot on i totally feel that it was worth every penny. they also have a great wine list for anyone and their price range, and it was really cool to see wines that i wasnt familiar with by the glass to try something new. i would dine here again and would ask for that same server, they really made our night.

I ate here with my mom on a Monday night...we were in Chicago on business at the same time, and I was looking forward to eating with her and to trying an interesting fusion concept. We sat outside with two other tables, and there were maybe four tables inside and one large group of about 9. Our evening started out well...our server was charismatic, and we splurged on a highly recommended $100 bottle of wine. It was great. The menu looked wonderful, and I was ready for a nice evening. Then everything went downhill.
We tried two tapas, the lamb and artichokes. The lamb was an interesting mix of flavors, but the artichokes (which our waiter forgot and hence arrived 5 minutes after the lamb) did not deliver. The spicy coconut sauce was not spicy in the least, and I began to wonder if everything might be a little overhyped. My mom ordered a seafood stew (I can't remember the name), and I went with the lone special, a surf and turf that combined the two most popular meals at the restaurant. Two meals were brought out sometime later. However, mine was not what I ordered, and I had to convince the person bringing our food that he was mistaken. He later carried them to a nearby table.
When my meal arrived, my medium steak was well done. I sent it back and told my mom to eat because she was starving. Her stew featured two shrimp and a few mussels. When it arrived, my meal was alright, the lobster was not tender at all, and the beef was nothing to write home about. Both sat atop spicy pastes that basically seemed to be surf and turf with generic Indian overtones.
Our waiter's charisma seemed to turn to shtick as numerous mistakes, none of which would destroy a meal, began to add up for an expensive and unsatisfactory dining experience. My special was $50, something the waiter neglected to mention while the menu tops out at $32. Getting comped a $7 dry desert doesn't do much for a $220 bill.
It's overpriced, the service isn't good, a shame since the idea is interesting.

Cons: poor execution of potential

We've been to Vermillion several times and found the food and drinks to be interesting. The ribs and mussels are great and the Vermillion hedonism is to die for. They also serve some great drinks - the tamarind margharita is worth trying! But we will never go again, our last experience was beyond awful.

Our server was rude and another one dropped hot soup on my husband which left him with a bad burn. The restaurant was apologetic and offered an ice pack but it took forever to come and when it did, was basically ice wrapped in a napkin. There was a 7-11 across the street and it would have been normal courtesy for someone go out and get a real one. We'd been there several times and thought it was just a one-time bad experience. But it got even worse. A friend of ours who was also with us ordered a fillet mignon - the server never asked how done she wanted it. It first came out rare, then when she asked for it to be well done, it took them two more tries and was still medium rare in the end. We were so sick of the server's rudeness that we decided it wasn't worth trying anymore. My own food was over-spiced with red chillies.

Finally, our check came - approx $300, with no discount. We paid it with tip but my husband wanted to let the manager know that we had had a terrible experience. The best the manager could do was offer a nightcap. After the miserable experience, we didn't want to be there anymore. He then sent out a couple of cards with his name on it, and asked us to take him up on his offer on our next visit. After all that we had been through, it would have been common courtesy for him to come in person.

What was ironic was that the food critics were around 2 tables away from us and we could see the staff fawning all over them. It was really disgusting to see the double standards on full display.

We'll definitely never go back - we were disappointed on every level - the food, the service, and the attitude when things were not working well.

Pros: Food, drinks (selectively)

Cons: Service

The food here is fantastic. I grew up eating Indian food and the blend of spices and tastes at Vermilion is wonderful, especially the inclusion of coconut milk in some of the spicy dishes. The tapas menu is a refreshing option if you're not in the mood for a heavy meal (though you can certainly leave full if you go that route as well). Be sure to try the mussels which are amongst the best I've had in the city. I'm not usually a fan of specialty drinks, but the cardamom champagne cocktails and the saffron vodka liqueur are not to be missed! The tandoori skirt steak is my favorite dish on the menu. I had heard that the lobster was great, and the flavor was wonderful, but it was overcooked and a bit dry. This might have been because it was the smaller surf and turf portion, so I may have to try the big one next time. I'd recommend getting a few extra appetizers or tapas and skimping on the dessert or ending with one of the drinks recommended above.

Pros: Great food, wonderful space, nice service.

Cons: None!

Came here for a private party and was pleasantly surprised - great drinks, and excellent food. Service was attentive and friendly, and the environment trendy. Would highly recommend to anyone.

Pros: Food, service, environment

The chef/owner of this Restaurant will create a great menu for private functions. The food is outstanding and very affordable. The environment is very hip, private space is only private with curtain, but works for the location. Restaurant is a little dark. Great option for any dinner out.

As soon as you walk in the place is amazing, the smells are wonderful. As soon as we sat down the service was perfect and the food and drinks were wonderful. If your sick of the usual tapas go to Vermilion. Try the lecchy martini or the ginger pom martini both a party for your palet

I would say this is the most disappointing restaurant that I have been to in years. I love Indian. I love Latin. The combo at this restaurant does not work. The flavors were way off - either too bland or overly spicy without any taste. The dishes were not well cooked. The service was very poor. The décor was average - and it is so noisy for no good reason that it is impossible to have a decent conversation. At any price, this restaurant is bad. At this price, it was absolutely terrible. I would absolutely never go... I can't imagine it will be open in a couple of years.

Cons: Everything - taste, decor, service

An interesting mix of Spanish with an Indian touch. I would try this place once, but it's not somewhere I would go regularly. If you don't like seafood-type dishes, I wouldn't go. It is worth a try just for the interesting drinks

Pros: Good Drinks

Went for an early dinner. The atmosphere is nice, and the service was exceptionally friendly, but unfortunately the food often left leagues to be desired. The appetizers were ok overall, with some, like the tuna tartare actually being good, but the main courses were dramatically over-seasoned (to the point of being bitter in some cases), and the specialty drinks were sludglike and terrible.

This is an overrated clip joint for young urbies who don't know any better. We had nine people and the average tab was $62/person for mediocre food and very little to drink.
Don't understand what makes it fusion, besides referencing the names to something Latin. This is an Indian restaurant and a bad one at that....suggest you go to Devon Ave for the real thing

The place is quite trendy, the food is awesome. Go with the tapas and do have the off-menu leechi-martini. It does get crowded though and is quite noisy so go in expecting that.

This restaurant came highly recommended. When I saw just how close it was to everything, I decided that we had to go. I'm so glad! We managed to go for lunch, which was a great value: We had delicious food, and the total bill for two of us was about $35.

But let me tell you about the fare.

During our entire stay in Chicago, this was the only restaurant that moved us to actually write down the names (and flavors) of all of the dishes that we tried. The intermingling of spice was amazing -- no exceptions. I will not recommend any specific dish, b/c we were not disappointed by any of them.

There are great "fusion" restaurants all over this country. I have never been to one that so nicely mixes Indian with Latin flavors.

I was planning to take an important client out to lunch and I was trying to find a unique place to take him. I was concerned because he was from Miami and I was afraid that nothing I knew of would impress him. I read about Vermilion in Time Out, and decided to take a chance. The client loved it! Our server was extremely knowledgable and attentive. The food was fabulous! My client still talks about what a great meal we had at Vermilion!

this place is good. seafood stew is incredible. but this place is incredibly expensive.

charging 20+ for seafood stew makes sense, but charging 20+ for an indian meat dish (something like chicken mango) does not.

expensive, but if money isn't a problem, go.

After trying to persuade my girlfriend to try Vermillion( b/c of all the press it had in my foodie mags) it wasnt until she read about it in Oprah's magazine did she agree. We were both blown away, our waiter knew we were first time customers and was able to explain and encourage us with the menu. After learning all about the fusion of latin and Indian cuisines, we went with all the servers recomendations. Our tapas(mussels, scallops and ceviche) were full of flavors. We shared our entrees, I had the skirt steak which was great but mydates entree the seafood stew was to die for. By the end of the meal we were practically licking our plates. I drank an Indian Beer forFirst time my girlfriend loved her sangria and know craves Naan (Indian Bread) We are hooked, already made reservations with friends to show off our new find.

I've been to vermilion twice. Both times the food blew me away. The flavor combinations were so unique. I love seafood and was happy that there's a lot of seafood options on the menu. I had the moqueca ( a seafood) stew that was fantastic. Our server recommended the tapas sampler as a starter. It was a lot of food but we managed to fit in the desserts too.

The second time I went was a friday. There was a house dj there spinning. Great for atmosphere but be warn that it does get loud.

I brought my parents here when they visited the city. They seated us at a great table and the waitress talked us through all our questions on a menu that had a lot of interesting items. The meal started out with an "amuse" that was a little treat the chef sent out to customers. The tapas were unlike anything you can get elsewhere and the entrees we ordered, paneer simolaf (unsure of the spelling), was great. Finally, the deserts were elaborate and as much about beautiful presentation as they were about great taste. In terms of ambience they have really cool photography throughout a pretty sleek overall interior design.

First impressions are very important to me, so as my date and myself entered Vermilion we were very surprised. The attentiveness displayed from beginning to end was excellent. First, the server's recommendations on tapas and wine was right on the mark. The small plates were appealing and very tasty. Everyone would benefit from a order of NAAN, once you start eating this bread you cannot stop !!! Entress were fantastic Skirt Steak, Brazilian Fish Stew. Desserts really completed our evening = Flan.

My first visit to Vermilion was amazing and certainly not the last. The ambience is hip and trendy and so is the food. The food is flavorul and bold. We were a group of 10 people and we ordered a variety of tapas, each and every one was as good as the next. The desserts are all spectacular. too I can't wait to go back there.
