We always stop off at this park when returning from Big Sur. It is located 3 miles south of Carmel off of Highway 1. It costs $8 to park and get a map of the park. Once you park, there is a picnic area and bathroom. Snack here first since you cannot eat on the beaches that you'll arrive at that are a short hike from the parking area. You'll walk up a steadily climbing path and meander around spectacular cliffs boasting a an amazing view of the ocean and rocky coves below. By the way, I would not recommend this hike for children under age 7 unless you have them in a carrier or are watching them at all times as the drop off is quite significant. Dogs are not permitted. Hike about a half mile and descend to China Beach, a beautiful oasis where kids can swim in a secluded cove. You can go back to the trail and hike further to view islands covered with thousands of birds, then loop back to the beach and finally to the parking area. Highly recommended, better than a postcard!
