Sol's Nieto Mexican Grill is pitiful

What a fiasco. We went with two other families because of coupons from our kid's schools. Oops! Only one coupon per table. Oops! Forgot to tell us there is a $1.75 sharing charge (even with a 2 year old). Oops! Despite a split check, hidden 18% tip included because more than 5 in our total party (but big BOLD letters about calculating tips before coupon discounts). Waitress recommended meals - fajitas or quesadillas (not exactly cuisine). Beef fajitas flavorless. Cheese enchiladas smothered in tomato paste. Chicken enchiladas bland. 20 minutes to get a refund after realizing we had double tipped. My suggestion - Zuzu's across the parking lot is better, cleaner, cheaper.

Totally unacceptable. Employees didn't care and smarted back.In addition, the Migas I had for breakfast were uneatable. I will never go back. The employees were very unfriendly and didn't;t care.

Great, fresh food
by Nancy H.
I don't know why I waited to so long to try this place, but I'm so glad I finally did! I was thrilled that they offer so many veggie versions of popular dishes (the veggie fajitas are amazing). My friend ordered the fish tacos and they were better than anyplace else. The pico de gallo is fresh & spicy; guacamole has a lot of flavor; and the borracho beans were equally tasty. TRY THE QUESO FLAMEADO!
Very affordable, nice waitstaff, abundant parking, too. I don't know why this place doesn't get more press. Heads & shoulders above Cantina Laredo, that's for sure, which serves cheese sauce for queso, instead of real cheese, and has no options for vegetarians (the cheese & onion enchiladas come drenched in a meat sauce)

Sol's is a very relaxed place to eat and so easy to get to at Mockingbird and Abrams. The chips and salsa are great to munch while you read the menu but save room for the wonderful meals. I've eaten breakfast, lunch and dinner at Sol's and can't decide which I like best...I think it's all of them. The food comes out fresh and hot...the servings are large and the quality of the ingredients is excellent. The service is sometimes a bit slow but is never bad! There's an outside patio which is open during good weather but it's been taken over by cigarette smokers...the inside is smoke free though. It's a very friendly family place and great for dates too. You can cozy up together in one of the booths or sit at a table. There are TV's so you can watch sporting events if that's what you want, but the restaurant seems to draw lots of folk who like to chat who linger long after their meals are over...it's very comfy so you feel at home. I typically eat the authentic Mexican dishes, the house specials and leave the Tex Mex to those who like it but I've enjoyed every meal I've eaten there. The bar can mix up pretty much anything you want and there is a great selection of cold beers along with the non-adult beverages if that's your choice. Try the desserts too...they're great!

This is a family oriented Tex-Mex restaurant, with TV visible from every table. They have great fajitas, tamales and other stuff. They have a small bar area, and the layout is very open. It is primarily families, and not much of a date restaurant. The food and service is good, and the prices are reasonable at $10 per plate or less.

Poorly treated by management
by TDub2001
My wife and I have been here a few times, and it is never really great. The food is okay, and the service is less than stellar. I keep thinking it is because the waiters and waitresses are really busy, but I hardly see any business in this restaurant. in the times we have been We went again with some friends, and our waitress seemingly forgot about us on the patio, and we had a coupon, and the couple we were with had a coupon as well. The waitress never came back, and so my friends had to go to the bar to pay their check, and when the waitress finally came to pick up our check, she refused our coupon, saying "1 per table". Well, for one, this could have been avoided if she had bothered to come out and give us our checks, and two, the manager on duty would not hear anything I had to say. No where on the coupon does it say "one per table" and he kept pointing at a rinky dink sign that looked like a permit on the window when you walk in, saying that it explains everything I need to know. Very rude, and in fact, I had to take my coupon out of his hands, because apparently he wasn't even going to give it back!
If you want to eat here, really go somewhere else. There are much better mexican restaurants around with much better service. I would love to describe some redeeming qualities that this restaurant has, but I really can't.
Pros: Feeding the birds on the patio was fun.
Cons: Management was extremely rude.

okay - may or may not return

We tired Sol's for the first time this weekend because we got a gift certificate off of a website, which I am apparently not allowed to type in this review. Great deal, but as a condition of the certificate we had to spend $35, so we got more than usual for just 2 of us. We sat on the patio... not a great patio, but it was perfect weather, so that was nice. The waitress was fine, not terrible, not outstanding. Alcohol was included with our certificate, so I had a margarita and my husband had a beer. Beer was fine, margarita was terrible. If we eat here again, I will definitely not have the margarita. ($5.50). For dinner we had beef fajitas and sol's pechuga. The fajitas were good (although I could have used more sour cream and guac) ($12.95). Sol's pechuga sounded better on the menu. The chicken didn't seem to have much flavor ($11.95). We also had a bowl of queso. We took a lot of food home and had it for lunch today. Not bad as leftovers.
Overall, not a bad experience, but nothing compeling to make me want to come back. I'd have the fajita's again, but not sol's pechuga. Most dinners were between $8.50 and $14.
Pros: fajitas
Cons: Margarita, ambience

I give up
by EvelynOyster
I keep trying to give this restaurant another chance because I love Mexican food and it's so close to my house, but after last night, I finally give up. It's not out-of-the-ordinary for service to be slow (to the point of lazy), but it was so bad that I left a less than 10% tip. I can't recall the last time I left less than 20% for anyone, even when I've gotten bad service. The food took a full 30+ mins. to get to our table and when it arrived, it was cold. We were so hungry that we ate it anyway. My husband had the tamale plate which was not only cold, but the taste was so bad that it was inedible. I ordered a beef taco salad, which had a tiny portion of ground beef and was topped with caked, cold queso. Our kids had fajitas and these were at least edible, although my youngest son got shrimp fajitas, and the whole plate had a total of only 6 shrimp.
I finally give up! My husband and I keep going because we want it to be like our early days of eating at Sol's Taco Lounge in Deep Ellum, but it doesn't come close, and even worse, there is no chance of making a new memory at this spin-off. Gross, cold, slow, disgusting- and a waste of $50- that's my review.
Pros: we were able to use a coupon
Cons: nothing will ever entice us to go back

AMAZING FOOD GREAT MARGARITAS
by stevectx
After reading the bad review i thought hmm... let's try this anyway. One bad experience doesnt make everything bad especially when it comes to drinks. So off we went.
Imagine my surprise to find out this place is related to one of my other favorite spots in Dallas. Sol's Taco Lounge in Deep Ellum once again i felt like home. This place serves up some AMAZING FOOD, from Enchiladas to Tacos and Chalupas. To my favorites yea!!! Guiso de Res and Fajitas!! Now let me tell u a lil secret!!! On WEEKENDS at 8am you can find one of the most AMAZING MEXICAN BREAKFAST as well as PANCAKES for the traditional. What a great place to have a mimosa bloody mary or even a frozen rita on the Patio!
Sol's is very family friendly sometimes too much so but you have to realize the neighborhood feel of things. So time it right or get stuck in kiddie land which i must say the staff handles well. Sol's is a place everyone should try. Remember the bad review complained of the drink not the food. ILL RATE THE FOOD 5 STAR as for the Drinks... JUST AS GREAT!
Pros: Everything about the FOOD
Cons: alot of kids sometimes...
