Most likely the grimiest bar/ club I have ever been too. Left after few minutes of getting inside the tiny overcrowded and mainly underage room.

Wow. I heard such good things about this place. Never again. Watered down overpriced drinks. I like crowds but the space it too crammed. Staff is rude. Music barely ok. Do yourself a favor and find another club.

Retreat is the best! I go here all the time and the bouncers are always nice to me. I always have AccessGotham set me up a list, which is a definite plus. My friends and I always do a big walk in of 15 to 20 people.

RETREAT was one of the most horrible places that I have ever been too. The bouncers were the ONLY good thing going on at that location. The drinks sucked, the ambience sucked, the bathroom is located down the longest flight of stairs,

This place is a filthy, low-class shithole. Bouncers are rude as hell. Don't be surprised if they resort to squeezing your private parts upon passing the security check. No female security on duty which makes it even worse if you come with

We went to the Retreat Lounge for a New Yr eve celebration and well.... in the 26 yrs of my life, they provided me with the worst beginning to a New Year.

Me and a group of friends arrived before 11 PM for the party and were made to wait outside for more than 10 minutes in the rain even with a valid ticket. We literally had to create a scene to let ourselves in but little did we realize that things are going to be even worse.

Let alone get a place to sit/drink or dance, there wasnt any to even stand. We somehow shoved and pushed around to get to the Coat hangers but the lady would not accept our Coats as she said its already full. There was no way we could find the staff among all this mayhem and we went back to the pushing and shoving with our Winter coats on, by the time we could think of what to do next one of my female friends fainted and we all came out of the place with a New Yr spoiled, a sick friend and $100 lighter in the pocket.

Obviously, the organizers oversold the event to make a quick buck.

I havent been to this place on a normal day so cannot comment on that but this is what happened on New Yrs eve. So you guys know this place has to be avoided on such occasions.

Jam packed local trains in Mumbai (India)... that is the only place I can compare this place with. If you count the number of people per sq feet in America in a room on new yr eve... this place will top the rankings. You would not have get a place neither to move your ass nor even to breadth.
Horrible experience. Please do not even think of visiting this place.
Thanks,
Vinod

This place is doesn??t have the excitement of a club or the ambience of a lounge so lets call it a dressed up bar. I was not the least bit impressed with the venue or its staff. The staff members are very pretentious and write you off if you do not buy bottles. If you look at the misleading pictures you will notice that there are couches throughout the entire bar and a tiny dance floor in the middle, do not be fooled into thinking there is more to this place because there isn??t. Also if you are in fact looking for a small and intimate setting, do not for one moment think you can sit on the coaches and enjoy a drink or two with friends because they will kick you right out of your seat for posers who are getting bottle service no matter how much you spend on drinks. They don't respect the average Joe customer that is just trying to have a good time and a few drinks. When I do pop bottles it would be a place worth poppin bottles at, this certainly wasn't and I base 80% of that on the staff's horrible way of handling the public

The staff belittles you if you are not buying bottles. If I want to be in a stuffy club with pretentious posers I will go to the meat packing district not this wanna be hole in the wall place. By the way the drinks are ridiculous, I paid $14 dollars for a patron shot, outrageous! Don??t waste your time in this dump.

I went to Retreat for the first time on Christmas Eve, which is usually a big party night in NYC. I got to this club at 2:30 am and there were less than 50 people inside. The staff was very friendly but there was hardly anyone to be friendly to. The few people in there knew how to party and were dancing and the music was nice as well. Drinks were reasonably priced at $9-$11. The decor is nice as well. I just hoped for a bigger crowd, especially since I arrived so late.

Cons: Club was half empty.

I love Retreat. The bouncers are so sweet and know who I am by now because I'm a bit of a regular. The ambiance inside is really laid-back, and even if the place is packed you'll find a place to dance. I really like to bring all of my friends here and just sort of set them loose - everyone will have a good time. The decor is phenomenal, sort of like an Alice in Wonderland acid trip. I've never not had fun here. As the night warms up, the crowd gets more and more fun and attractive.

Cons: a bit pricey, people do smoke inside so it gets smelly

The other reviews kind of confuse me. I had an amazing time. The bouncers were friendlier to me. Ex. at one point when I was trying to tip the bouncer, he thought i was trying to give him a pound and pounded me back before noticing that I was trying to tip him. Considering that I'm a guy I'm not used to such friendliness from bouncers. The bartender was nice and I got my service right away. The people there were really friendly to me too and it was filled with girls.

It did get really crowded later on I must admit.

I was EXTREMELY disappointed with the way their staff treated my friends and I last night. I will never go back to Retreat again and will be telling everyone I know never to return. Specifically, the female girl standing outside of the door was unbelieveably rude. My friend who was wearing dress shorts that were showing about 2 inches of ankle, she told him he could not enter. Then, not 2 minutes later she let a guy with cargo shorts and holes in them in the door and claimed he was allowed in since he was buying bottle service. What kind of discrimination is this? If you have a dress code, it should be for everyone and not just applied to those who may or may not be spending enormous amounts of money. She did not know what our intentions were on bottle service and was extremely unprofessional. SHE THEN ADDED THAT HE NEEDED A TREADMILL! Who are these people working here Do they have no class or morals? Not surprisingly, she did not want to state the name of the establishment or her name since, as she should be, I hope she was mortified. Unfortunately, I do not know her name, but I truly hope that she is fired. I have never been treated at any bar or club the way she treated us last night. It was disgraceful.

first we got there at 12:00 and my friend was supposed to have a party and get comps on a bottle which was a lie, they made everyone wait outside they only let 4 ppl in from thr 20 ppl she brought, they said we have to wait for more ppl to leave, and after 15 ppl walked out, they said no , that no one left, meanwhile they walked out right in front of my face. The reason for not letting anyone in they said was because the fire marshall said its at capacity. BULLS*** I doubt the fire marshall gave them a phone call and asked how many people are inside and then said not to let anyone in, common we are a lot smarter then the two blonde bimbos that stand there letting people in. Went back because we felt bad for my friend at 1:30 finally got in, after the bouncer claimed my bf's id was fake which it isnt, and then after 10 minutes and his stupid black light, he let us in, becuase he realized he is a moron. At about 2:30 my bf was smoking outside and they wouldnt let him back in, because they claimed he was too wasted. HE WASNT EVEN DRUNK, BARELY EVEN TIPSY. So he told them his gf was inside so the stupid fat bouncer (the one with the nasty growth next to his ear) walked him in and we pretty much got kicked out. I swear, I have never cursed anyone out like i did that night. This place is a disgrace to nyc, and they make it out to be like some hot s**t, which it isnt even close. Union bar one block up is so much better and there r no problems. The bouncers probably act like this because they are used to mad 18 year old's trying to sneak so they treat everyone like we're peasants because they know they are stupid and they dont have the brain capacity to get a better job, so they give us problems because they are haters. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME

This is my first CitySearch review and my first time going to Retreat, but I had to write a "review". Fisrt the positives-to be nice. The place has a sort of cool set up, its a forrest outdoor theme which is catchy. The door guy was actually cool to me and my friends, we had only 3 girls and 5 guys yet the door guy wasn't like other NYC clubs that would have made the guys stay outside. The DJ was probably one of the best i've heard in a long time (Stacey Style-I think), it was a nice combo of dance and hip hop and not a lot of top 40. NOW the negatives, the wait staff is RUDE-RUDE-RUDE, took a half hour to get drinks, they all had a snotty attitude for no reason. They water down the drinks, are totally overpiced-but expected in nyc i guess and lastly, the crowd is a joke. Its 22 year old wanna-be's all from Jersey and Long Island. Not a typical NYC crowd more like a frat bar. They need promoters big time. We came in the first place because another friend was having a party and already inside, if their table wasn't there, the crowd would consist of 200 little boys.

For a place that has a good space and nice set up, it's unfortunate that yet again the downfall of this place will be due to a rude bouncer. He yells at people who are already paying customers and are inside! I came to the place a little early to scope it out. It was dead (at like 10:15pm) and the bouncer, said it would not be a problem if six of my other friends came later - he said 'just tell them to ask for [him]'. That doesn't work. Then he'll tell you he can't do anything about it and yell to stay inside and move out of the way. Oddly enough, a girl who works there told us to have our friends pay him $20 so they can get in. She works there!! - I wonder if the manager knows she's telling people that. We just decided to leave and go to 230 Fifth, which is better.

This place is HOPPIN on a thursday! Its great if you like being packed SO tight you cant walk OR dance. Which is too bad since the music is great. Plus, whats with the camera guy with the bright light filming people on the dance floor? It was like trying to dance during last call. Bright search lights REALLY add to the ambiance of se xy club dancing....... What really repulsed me was the smoking, it was RAMPANT there. NO attempts by the staff to control it. So if you like being packed in like sardines, lost in a cloud of smoke, listening to great music, and watching short fat girls butt bumping eachother....this is the place for you.

Arrived with my boyfriend for a friend's bday party here at around midnight on a Friday night. Place was packed....in a large part due to my friend's bday party and the 30+ people that showed up (girl's popular, what can I say?). You'd think with a large party like that and table service you'd get the royal treatment. WRONG! The bouncer& promoter that night were the biggest jerks I have ever encountered during all my years out in the city. He wasn't actually rude to me but, I saw him SCREAM at the top of his lungs at a group of the birthday girl's that all males were to "Forget about coming in," and all females with said males "Were to stop leaving the bar to accompany more males in." Then he proceeded to snap the velvet rope back into place whereby his ego-tripped world apparently returned to normal and all the bulging veins in his cherry red face seemed to subside. I'm not even joking. His face was about the shade of pasta sauce.....this is how angry a group of people, who were there to celebrate a girl's bday made him. After that little dramatic scene I was so disgusted I promptly got into a cab and hightailed it to where people are civil.

After reading the reviews and even visiting the place beforehand, my friend and I decided to host a holiday party at Retreat. The owner assured me that my guests (anywhere from 50-75) people would be able to get into the club. However, that was not the case. She didn't inform me that there were four other parties going on there. The door staff was extremely rude and only allowed 25 of my guest to come in. Other guests were either turned away or made to wait for a long time in the cold. The place was overpacked. People were smoking (even though it was against NYC law) and throwing up in the club. The security did not do anything to stop the smoking since the owners allow this to take place. The staff took a long time to clean up the messes taking place all over the place (especially in the ladies' bath room...disgusting and dirty, with no toilet paper in the stalls...with a host who could have cared less.) The coatcheck girl wasn't the brightest person on the planet when she decided to randomly house coats instead of placing them in some kind of order. People had to wait at least 45 minutes to get their coats. Overall, the owners need to first not overbook parties during a single night. Second, they need to hire better staff. Its unfortunate since the place is beautifully decorated and the music was great. The overcrowding was a major turnoff.

Like the previous comments, the asian doorman is EXTREMELY RUDE and WILL RUIN YOUR NIGHT! I had planned my birthday party weeks in advance and was told to leave my name with the bouncer so my friends would have no problem getting in. The A** at the door would not let me guy friend in because he showed up with two others guys and even though it was early in the night and the place was practically empty they would not let them in. I had bottle service and it was demanded that unless I get another bottle right away, my friends are not getting in and my guest list will be closed. They have no repect for people!

I went to Retreat on Saturday, Nov. 17th. The entire staff was incredibly rude. My first drink was from the female bartender. I paid her in cash and she yelled "If you're not going to leave me a tip then you shouldn't bother coming back to this bar" and walked away. I went to the other male bartender and he waved me off until my friend was able to order drinks for us. At the end of the night as I was walking out I heard a man talking to the bouncer trying to get in. I was so annoyed at this venue that I just said "Don't even bother trying to get in, it's not worth it". After which the bouncer said, "Why don't you just walk your fat a** home". This bar is very "Bridge & Tunnel" and there is absolutely no diversity there. I think the only good part about this bar is that there was no cover, but it's because their drinks are at least $12-13 instead of the average NYC price of $10 a drink.

Pros: Music was good.

Cons: Incredibly rude staff, including the bouncer. Very "Bridge and Tunnel" with no diversity. Same type of girls and guys.

.

I was having a birthday party there. The ratio was about 30 girls and 20 guys. The doorman was extremely unfriendly even after I had planned the party for a month. People were told to wait in line even though many people were not inside. The music was not that good. Many of my friends ended up leaving after waiting for too long. The guy acted like the place was marquee or tenjune. 5 girls and 2 guys were waiting over 20 mins in line at 1 AM even though they were the only people in line and eventually I told everyone to leave. Terrible experience. I specifically went to a place like retreat so that there would not be a problem getting everyone in like a trendy NY club, but the plan back fired big time. Don't go.

Place is great, been a few times, was just there for the playboy party... insane! if you can get in invite to any of the private parties definitely go. You dont have to get a table, but definitely, definitely recommend it, its way more fun. All the tables are around the dance floor and if you have one you can dance on the couches... The tables on the left are the best. The place is still new so the crowd isnt lame (yet). definitely is a LATE night place, midnight things are just getting started. They are tough on groups of guys, so unless you are rolling with girls you may have to wait or get a table. Good thing is reservations and guest list are actually honored, none of that bs like at other places. waitresses are HOT, music good, they play a good mix.

I wish I could rate this place zero stars. They clearly try and be something they aren't even close to...an exclusive lounge. The asian triad doorman, whom others have complained about, is an absolute joke. That's the best description of him...extremely rude and condescending to my party, not to mention plenty of others out front. He totally defamed my partys character with his little smirky face, comments, and attitude. But hey...his life goal is to be a doorman, so I guess he's got a lot going for him. Good thing there are no battery laws in NY, because one day, someone's gonna let him have it. With the number of places to go in NYC, especially ones that know what they are, wasting your time at retreat would be a huge mistake.

Just celebrated my bday at Retreat this past Friday. I have to say it was the best bday party I ever had. My friends and I go out a few nights a week and we heard such great things about Retreat. We called the lounge and they could not have been more accomodating. The music and crowd were great and we closed the place down. Great night out I would highly recommend.

It was my birthday on saturday night. I contacted the owner 2 weeks in advance about a birthday celebration with lots of people coming especially since it was more than one of our birthdays. The owner told me to send over a list for the open bar (10-11), I sent over a list of over 70 names with a paragraph on top stating more were invited and will show up these were just the definites. The door staff had my friend come get me from my own birthday to tell me to CHOOSE 3 people from a line of atleast 15 outside that I wanted to come in. There was apparently an unspoken limit. Then atleast another 30 on top of that were rejected because the door staff was so RUDE and even told me they would kick me out of my own birthday if I walked outside again to say hi to my friends that came. The manager was discustingly rude telling me to basically pay more cause he couldn't care less if we were there or not. DO NOT GO HERE.

it was 3 peoples birthdays sat night so they sent the owner a list of over 100 people. the owner said that would be no problem and we can have the open bar from 10-11. what they didnt tell us was that for the open bar they ONLY let in 30 people so all of our friends were waiting in the cold and the OBNOXIOUS complete loser doorman wouldnt let anyone else in, meanwhile the 30 of us in there took up about 1/8 of teh whole bar. so rude, were not accommodating, and the place sucked anyway. dont go there, they lie.

I went there for a friend's bday on saturday and encountered the worst door staff ever! The guy at the door was extremely rude and condescending. We left and brought our business to the Park with no problems.

I'm sure the only reason why the door guy let littlekim and her friends in was because he lost 30+ people earlier with his nasty attitude.

Stay away! unless you like having your night ruined.

I went to Retreat for my best friend's birthday party last night and the door guy totally ruined our time! To the management: I don't know why you would want to hire someone who is so rude and actually drives people away. And in case you are wondering who I am writing about...its the short Asian guy with the bad haircut. Our entire group left Retreat all because of him...hmm....must not be good for business. Also, I saw only 2 bartenders working at the bar (it was a Saturday night)....you have got to be kidding me. I would not set foot in this place again even if you paid me.

I've been twice and trust me, you don't want to waste your time. They let in teenagers that barely look like they're 13 and the door staff is so offensive and rude--I wish I had taped the encounter.s Don't bother going. It's practically empty and they try to rip you off like they're a high-end club. Music is a constant repetition of YMCA, Loveshack, and other cheezy 80s songs. Absolutely worthless!

What a beautiful place! Was out on a dinner date at BLT fish. We wanted to go out after dinner and were told to go to Retreat down the block. The doorman was super friendly and let us in even though we weren't on the guest list. Music was great, the DJ played a mix of 80's, Hip Hop, and Rock. The bartenders were cool and we stayed there until 3. Perfect date would highly recommend.
