Project Basho is really cool.

by Melvina H.

I have taken two classes at Project Basho (one this summer and one this fall). Both classes were awesome and I especially enjoyed the teaching styles of each instructor. They were very approachable and gave excellent feedback. I took a film class and a digital class. I feel like I have become a part of a great new community. I would highly recommend them to a friend.

Project Basho is a hidden gem for artists!

by Christie T.

I recently took their Photshop for Photographers I with Hilda, and loved it! There was only one one other student in the whole class, so we got very personal attention and answers to all our questions. When Hilda didn't know the answer, we researched it together. Photoshop was complicated but she broke it down into manageable pieces and the class was a lot of fun. I would highly recommend this class and the studio. Its in a quiet section of Northern Liberties with EASY, FREE PARKING! WHOA! I am more interested in Photoshop than photography, but I think people that like photography would get even more out of the class and out of Project Basho in general. I love the loft space we worked in too.

Rick Wright is a great teacher!

by Sherry M.

I took the Photoshop for Photographers class at Project Basho with Rick Wright a few months ago. Rick was very knowledgeable and patient. Few people can take a complex subject like Photoshop, and deliver it to students at all different skill levels - Rick delivered! I look forward to attending more of Rick's classes! I also want o say that Project Basho is a wonderful place for growing photographers and Tsuyoshi (the owner) is a gift! I only wish I lived closer so I could go to the darkroom more often.
Thanks again Rick and Tsuyoshi!

Great Learning Opportunity...

by Scott D. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,532

The large format workshop (25-26 April) provided a great introduction for me, someone with experience in smaller formats but none for view cameras. I benefited greatly from the having a number of cameras/formats to try, and I'm glad to have had a hand in processing our film. I'm fascinated by the qualities of large negatives! Only wanted more film and more time!

Project Basho

by Cynthia L. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,811

This darkroom and gallery space in Northern Liberties is awesome! The owner, Tsuyoshi Ito, started teaching photography classes out of his Old City apartment ~ 6 years ago. He renovated the current space and created a darkroom and gallery. This is a fantastic photographic community to get involved with in the city. There are classes, trips, critiques, movie nights, etc. The members are enthusiastic and passionate about photography; it's contagious! Don't miss 2nd Thursdays!

Got to love it here

by Gina G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 8,608

The vibe you get once you step into the door is relaxing, not an uptight gallery, full of friendly talkative people. The work displayed on the walls are utterly amazing , the space is nice, and there is always from event going on to get people involved in the gallery.

Philadelphia Needs Project Basho!

by Brenna M.

Project Basho offers fairly priced photography classes, workshops, and darkroom rental in a city that is lacking a strong photographic community. Tsuyoshi Ito, Basho's founder, is passionate about his work and is doing a great job creating amazing facilities and holding events for those interested in the world of photography. Everyone I have met through Basho is friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to learn more. If you are a photographer looking for an artistic community in Philadelphia, Project Basho is definitely worth exploring.

a grassroots effort, but pro-quality darkroom.

by Jacob H.

Project Basho is undoubtedly a gem on the north-of-Girard stretch of Germantown Avenue. Practically unidentifiable from the street, this small commercial building has been rehabbed into a darkroom rental over the last 4 years by one dedicated guy and the help of a lot of photography-community folks.

Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for you, the darkroom is rarely booked, so for a modest $10/hour, you often have the facility entirely to yourself. I enjoy circling the double-height gallery in the back while waiting for my color prints to process.

(And the color process is lightening fast -- somewhere in the 3 minute range; half of the time I'm used to on Colex machines.)

A Wonderful Resource for Philadelphia Photographers.

by Anonymous

I have been taking photography classes at Project Basho for 2 years, and my experience continues to get better each time.

The darkrooms and work space are wonderful and the teachers are beyond expectation. Project Basho becomes a photographers retreat, where creativity flows in a comfortable and supportive atmosphere.

In addition, Project Basho specializes in historical processes, has the only color facility in Philadelphia and continues to expand their curriculum and opportunities.

I would recommend this facility to anyone interested in photography, from a beginner to a skilled professional.

great place

by Tiffany S.

I took my first black and white photo class at Basho though I have been taking photos for years. It was a great experience and well worth the cost. I learned a lot and met several great people. I will definitely be taking more classes at Project Basho. If you are seriously interested in photography, this is the best place in the city to learn and create! Tsyoshi is an awesome teacher!
