The Basho folks take teaching photography very seriously. I took intermediate level courses in form and content, and low light photography. I learned a ton of stuff, the critiques were supportive and helpful, and the local trips to shoot at night were a blast.
I will be taking additional courses at Basho in the future, and would recommend these two courses to students who want to stretch their creativity and expand their knowledge with the help of very professional instructors. You have to be comfortable with all the camera basics, and for the form & content it is best to have some pictures already to submit to the critique.

I made the big trek to philly from where I live in Canada for a workshop on creating digital negatives with Clay Harmon, and I'm very glad I did.
The workshop was fantastic and exactly what I needed to give me a kick start into the somewhat intimidating world of digital negs for alternative processes.
Project Basho has this relaxed vibe and you immediately feel at home and comfortable just being there. For this reason, it's very easy to just dive in completely to what's happening: it basically makes for an optimum situation for learning.
I'm envious of those who live in philly. If I did, I know I'd be hanging out here often and taking lot's of workshops.
Thanks to Tsuyoshi and his staff for creating such a funky and inspiring centre for creativity and learning to blossom.

I was at the SLR class 12/4/2010. The instructor was extremely knowledgeable, pleasant and very helpful. The only part I can comment on is the brochure. When the brochure states 9-5, it should be 9-5. If students don't show up at 9:00 AM the class should still start. Waiting 20-30 minutes for some, takes the time from others that are there. Lunch was to be ordered by one of your instructors but apparently the order was not placed. That was another 30 minutes of our instructional time we did not get. Then we were told, during the class, the instructions sometime ends at 4-4:30. This takes more time from the learning period. I think a little more content would be appropriate.

I took Photoshop I and Photoshop II during the past few months
with Rick Wright who I found to be one of the most patient, nicest,
brightest teacher I have ever encountered. It takes someone very smart to explain difficult concepts clearly and simply. And RIck
has a delightful sense of humor as well!

I attended classes at Project Basho, Photographic Vision Digital I
The studio is really nice and the staff is awesome. They really exceeded my expectations!
The classes opened a window of possibilities and also guided me to find my own way through photography.
I feel more confident and now I just want to learn more and more.
I'm also enrolled for Photographic Vision Digital II.
I've already recommended Project Basho to all my friends.

I'm an amateur picture taker and I took an introduction class on using a digital SL-R camera. I was most impressed! The class was most helpful in understanding a not so easy topic. I definitely learned from this one day class and hope to take other classes in the future. High recommended!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Project Basho, and its founder Tsuyoshi Ito. You will not find someone who eats, sleeps and breathes photography more so than he does. I began taking b&w printing classes at PB over 5 yrs ago. PB's teaching methods are thorough, old school, and will make you a fabulous photographer and printer, both with respect to technical skills in the darkroom, and as an artist with respect to the composition of your photos. You will be challenged and encouraged to try new things, to grow, to make new discoveries, all in a fun, non-pressured atmosphere. PB also fosters a great community through group shooting trips, gallery trips, shows, critiques, and even bowling!

I just took Creative Color photography, which was taught by Rick Wright. It was an excellent course, which opened my mind to a new way of looking at photographic images. Rick has a lot of energy and is very patient. He explains concepts very nicely, is gentle and respectful with his corrective comments and works very hard to make the course a great experience. I plan to take more courses at Project Basho.

Been to Basho twice for exhibits and now completed my first weekend workshop (Fine Gelatin Silver Printing with Chuck Kelton) and was very pleased with the experience. Basho's a pretty unique place for the area - creative image making, whether digital, film or alternative process, is emphasized. It's not a sleek, big and deep-pocketed facility but an earnest, honest and down-to-earth center.

I want to thank Project Basho for the Friends of PB show (continuing to show in the gallery until July 30) allowing me to show some of my work for the first time. It was great to see the work of friends and colleagues in the simple yet striking gallery space. The reception was warm and intimate as per usual. I recommend stopping by the space to check out the work of our community that is developing there.

I recently took my second weekend workshop at Project Basho. My most recent workshop (Fine Gelatin Silver Printing) was conducted by Chuck Felton of Chuck Felton Labs. NY. Chuck is a master commercial printer who has worked with the greats and who has conducted numerous workshops and classes. The workshop was a wonderful experience and I would encourage everyone who is fascinated by this thing called photography to spend some time at Project Basho with Tsuyoshi Ito, Project Basho's founder and inspiration. Congratulations Tsuyoshi. I look forward to a return visit. John

I attended PB's Fine Gelatin Silver Workshop given by Chuck Kelton. He filled two very fast days with more information, tips, and demonstrations than I thought possible. Outstanding workshop with a helpful instructor. The folks at PB asked if we were interested in a reprise next year and the class unanimously agreed.

I have taken two classes at Project Basho (one this summer and one this fall). Both classes were awesome and I especially enjoyed the teaching styles of each instructor. They were very approachable and gave excellent feedback. I took a film class and a digital class. I feel like I have become a part of a great new community. I would highly recommend them to a friend.

I recently took their Photshop for Photographers I with Hilda, and loved it! There was only one one other student in the whole class, so we got very personal attention and answers to all our questions. When Hilda didn't know the answer, we researched it together. Photoshop was complicated but she broke it down into manageable pieces and the class was a lot of fun. I would highly recommend this class and the studio. Its in a quiet section of Northern Liberties with EASY, FREE PARKING! WHOA! I am more interested in Photoshop than photography, but I think people that like photography would get even more out of the class and out of Project Basho in general. I love the loft space we worked in too.

I took the Photoshop for Photographers class at Project Basho with Rick Wright a few months ago. Rick was very knowledgeable and patient. Few people can take a complex subject like Photoshop, and deliver it to students at all different skill levels - Rick delivered! I look forward to attending more of Rick's classes! I also want o say that Project Basho is a wonderful place for growing photographers and Tsuyoshi (the owner) is a gift! I only wish I lived closer so I could go to the darkroom more often.
Thanks again Rick and Tsuyoshi!

The large format workshop (25-26 April) provided a great introduction for me, someone with experience in smaller formats but none for view cameras. I benefited greatly from the having a number of cameras/formats to try, and I'm glad to have had a hand in processing our film. I'm fascinated by the qualities of large negatives! Only wanted more film and more time!

This darkroom and gallery space in Northern Liberties is awesome! The owner, Tsuyoshi Ito, started teaching photography classes out of his Old City apartment ~ 6 years ago. He renovated the current space and created a darkroom and gallery. This is a fantastic photographic community to get involved with in the city. There are classes, trips, critiques, movie nights, etc. The members are enthusiastic and passionate about photography; it's contagious! Don't miss 2nd Thursdays!

The vibe you get once you step into the door is relaxing, not an uptight gallery, full of friendly talkative people. The work displayed on the walls are utterly amazing , the space is nice, and there is always from event going on to get people involved in the gallery.

Project Basho offers fairly priced photography classes, workshops, and darkroom rental in a city that is lacking a strong photographic community. Tsuyoshi Ito, Basho's founder, is passionate about his work and is doing a great job creating amazing facilities and holding events for those interested in the world of photography. Everyone I have met through Basho is friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to learn more. If you are a photographer looking for an artistic community in Philadelphia, Project Basho is definitely worth exploring.

Project Basho is undoubtedly a gem on the north-of-Girard stretch of Germantown Avenue. Practically unidentifiable from the street, this small commercial building has been rehabbed into a darkroom rental over the last 4 years by one dedicated guy and the help of a lot of photography-community folks.

Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for you, the darkroom is rarely booked, so for a modest $10/hour, you often have the facility entirely to yourself. I enjoy circling the double-height gallery in the back while waiting for my color prints to process.

(And the color process is lightening fast -- somewhere in the 3 minute range; half of the time I'm used to on Colex machines.)

I have been taking photography classes at Project Basho for 2 years, and my experience continues to get better each time.

The darkrooms and work space are wonderful and the teachers are beyond expectation. Project Basho becomes a photographers retreat, where creativity flows in a comfortable and supportive atmosphere.

In addition, Project Basho specializes in historical processes, has the only color facility in Philadelphia and continues to expand their curriculum and opportunities.

I would recommend this facility to anyone interested in photography, from a beginner to a skilled professional.
