We use Trader Joe's for just a few things, wine, coffee beans, nuts, a few frozen things, goat cheese, and recently, salad greens. Everything we buy is a good value. I couldn't use it as an all-purpose grocer like Safeway, but it is a useful and welcome addition to the area. The staff at the cash registers are pleasant; floor staff can be variable because they are usually on a mission. TJ wines are cheap; lately the TJ labeled wines with Reserve or Grower's Reserve on the label are a good value. Buy a bottle; if you like it, go back soon and buy a few bottles.

I'm love Trader Joe's because they have great food at prices better than I can find at Safeway or anywhere else. I care about what I eat, but I'm also a student and don't have a ton of money to spend on groceries at places like Whole Foods and Berkeley Bowl. At Trader Joe's, I can trust that they use quality ingredients in their foods and that their prices are very reasonable, both for ingredients and prepared foods. Their prices for staples like milk, eggs, and bread are especially cheap compared to other stores, but there is no sacrifice of quality.

I have mixed feelings about Trader Joes. On the one hand it's a nice and easy way to get pretty good prepared or easy to make food at a reasonable price. On the other hand it kind of ruins the flavor of Rockridge. It's a big chain store that has it's own culture around it. It makes an already congested area even more congested. Zachary's is already nearly impossible to park at let alone when Trader Joes is open.

Their wine is suspiciously cheap. Everything is over-packaged. In environmentally conscious Rockridge and Berkeley, Trader Joes is ideologically a bit out of step.
