I joined two friends for dinner on Tuesday, October 12th. We were informed we'd need to wait for our party to be complete in order to be seated. I understand this on a weekend or busy time but the place was wide open. After being seated, I noticed my appetizer plate had evidence of food on it and I requested a replacement. Our server went into a diatribe about the plates just look that way because they scratch each other when stacked. I understood there was some scratching on the plate but there was food! in addition to that. I didn't feel I needed an explaination - I just wanted a clean plate and got a curt lesson. We ordered our food and the server never checked back with us. We had requested chop sticks and never got them. We were left to our own defenses save for the two high school age hostesses that were having a colorful conversation not necessarily meant to be overheard by the diners. After our service, we got the bill. Our server never offered separate tickets or to split it out but, that is only secondary to the poor level of service. We saw nothing indicating the payment options so two of use wrote out checks. Our server came over to notify us that they were not accepted and it was right on the bill. Upon closer examination, it was not on the bill nor was it visible anywhere else. She did recant and indicate that is ' used ' to be on there and if we HAD to use a check, we could but she was quite put out by the whole thing. The food was pretty good but it was very hard to get past the poor service starting with how we were seated to the conversation to the final straw trying to complete payment. People have bad days but, they should stay home if they are in a public service position. I truly hope Heather has better days than what we experienced.

I always go here with my Mom, it's "our" place. We both love the peanut chicken and ginger cocktails. The wait staff is always very friendly and upbeat.

Big Bowl is by far the best in asian food for its freshness, the fried calamari are the best in town ,the batter is very light and has no oily taste and the sauces that go with it are fabulous, overal natural tastes without overdoing on salt , great non alcoholic drinks, original desserts such as the Mochi. I go there as much as I can after work accross from Southdale. The service is pretty good as well. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a quality meal.

Have received consistently good service and food at any of the Big Bowls within the Twin Cities. The potstickers are fabulous and the stir fry bar has always had fresh, quality vegatables.

I'm a vegetarian and spicy-food lover and I go to the Big Bowl when I want to treat myself. Their food is great and fortunately, I've never had the problem the previous reviewer has had! A coworker of mine just went there for the first time and was telling us how much he liked it too. I recommend making your own bowl (at their ingredient bar) - that way there won't be any ingredients in your dish that you don't like. Their hot ginger tea is delicious - fresh ginger and honey. I had a pomegranate ginger cocktail that was delicious albeit expensive ($8). And the mochi dessert with ice cream was unlike any dessert I've ever had. Very fresh ingredients. The service has always been excellent except for one waiter who sneered when I asked for tea to SHARE with my mom. The bathroom could have used a cleaning that day too. Other than that, it's been great every time. Love it. Highly recommend it.

Pros: can pick your own ingredients, ginger tea and homemade ginger ale drinks are great

Cons: drinks at the bar are a little expensive but still worth it

Holy $%^&!!! Literally. They must put laxatives in their food because my girlfriend and I just had the exact same bathroom experience. Not only that but the food had no flavor. It was as if someone just took my tastebuds out of my mouth for one meal (except for the taste of salt). Even the chili peppers were flavorless. All in all I would say go here if you like flavorless food and dirty socks.

Pros: Well designed visually minus the uniforms

I love the potstickers! Cassie who would part time bartend there and serve sometimes is the best server I think I have had in the TC.

She is top notch and I would recomend asking for her if she is working. The hibiscus tea is the best but watch out for the caffene rush

If you are like me, you are always looking for great restaurants with lots of choices for vegetarian dishes, and Big Bowl is best. There are many options in their menu, or you can do the noodle bar, all of which have lots of fresh choices with noodles, vegetables and tofu. I have probably tried all their vegetarian choices and everything has been tasty. If you don't like it spicy, they will certainly do that for you, always willing to accommodate to your taste buds. Also a great place to take kids, with a good children's menu.

For American Chinese food, Big Bowl is one of the best. You can order directly from the menu or pick your vegetables & meat and they will cook it up for you. Very easily have more food to take home afterwards.

This is the probably close to the best asian food I've ever had. ALL their food and appetizers are amazing. A special attraction is their fresh stir fry bar where you get a big bowl [clever eh?] and can select as much frech vegis as you can smush into the bowl. With that you chose a rice type, meat type [or no meat] and sauce type and they make your stir-fry right then. HUGE portions and delicious. FAST and extremely friendly service and excellent management make this a favorite.

I like the food at Big Bowl; a refreshing new take on Eastern cuisine that is far different from the usual mundane Asian restaurant. Very fresh veggies, prepared with some interesting twists. This is fusion food, not the local Chinese or Thai takeout, and should be judged on its own merits. Personally, I think they have the best pad Thai ever, though portion size is smallish for the medium to slightly high prices.

That being said, the service can range from okay to really awful. The problem is more with the so-called hosts / hostesses than the waiters. The twenty-something front staff can be really snotty on busy nights, often acting like it's a great favor for them to find you a table despite having reservations. I don't need this kind of attitude and it has limited my visits to Big Bowl, despite my love of their food.

Pros: Wonderful food, innovative tastes

Cons: lousy service, not the best value

.

Awful place - probably the worst service I have had in years - worst part the host was very rude - they made old people wait to be seated way too long. The food was so Americanized - really banal use of spice!
Don't bother go to another restaurant in the area.

Well, this isn't your hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant, so don't expect a bargain here but do expect unique food! We came for lunch. I had the special real Ginger drink ($2.50 was too much to have it again) with lemon chicken, which I thought was good- not like the Americanized Chinese version. My fiance had the Kung Pao Chicken with noodles. He was disappointed inthe flavor. Overall, it is not a phenomenonal restaurant but it is pretty good fusion of different asian flavors and food. Prices are not cheap and there is no lunch menu.

Overpriced, boring, chain-restaurant food. This place certainly does not deserve the support it gets. Why are so many people willing to pay so much for such mediocre fare? There are many real Asian restaurants around serving much more interesting and economical food than this.

I am normally not that critical, but with the holier than thou service and the fad laden food...I feel I have to comment. I ate there once and only once, the food was tasty except for the overabundance of chunks of chicken fat I found in by kung pao chicken. Gross, Gross, Gross!!!!!!!!!

The Big Bowl is an awesome restraunt. There pad thai is better than anywhere else that I've tried it.

I disagree with the review posted on 5/17 - if I want Asian food, I'm going to go to the place with the best food. I like to try out new restaurants, but I'll only return if the food is truly good. In a city with so many authentic (and more affordable) restaurants, I would certainly never drive out to the suburbs for that again. I found the food bland, only okay, and at least $4 more per entre than my favorite Thai restaurant.

I can't find a bad word about this place. I found the food very fresh and good and the service is outstanding. If you go there at the right time you don't even have to wait to be seated. I'll go back for sure.
