I entered into a contract with Choates in early 2008 to renovate a property I own. They came and work started and seemed to progress reasonably for the first few weeks. Then work slowed down and in spite of that Choates kept coming back and asking for more money for items that should have already been paid for. Ultimately although the work was contracted to be finished within a few months by end of April 2009, over 1 year later, my property was uninhabitable, the roof they "fixed" still leaked, the heating system did not work (2 radiators were leaking), the hot water boiler that was supposed to be new was burnt out and the hot water was never turned on, the toilets were not sealed around the base and the water ran constantly in both tanks, all kitchen cabinets were sloppily installed and none of the doors closed properly, the wooden floor that they supposedly sanded was rough and unfinished and the electricial work that was done was incorrect (regular outlets in kitchen and 1/2 bath instead of GFI outlets) and of course, I am still waiting to have the security locks that I paid for installed on the metal outer doors.

I have subsequently ran into a couple of Choates General Contractors' workers who claimed that they were not being paid by the Choates and they will no longer work for them.

In short, Choates are dishonest, sloppy workers who appear at face value to be nice honest Southern folks. Be warned everyone, these people do not have a conscience. Do not be taken in by them as I was. It has cost me $10,000 and counting to finish the work I paid for that was never done.
